REGISTER NOW for the Kansas Occupational

Therapy Association's Annual Conference, which will be

held September 11-13, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency in

Wichita, Kansas!

The theme for our Conference this year is Paving the “Yellow Brick Road” to

the Occupational Therapy Centennial Vision. We will be focusing on and

supporting AOTA’s Occupational

Therapy Centennial Vision: "We

envision that occupational therapy is a

powerful, widely recognized, science-

driven, and evidence-based profession

with a globally connected and diverse

workforce meeting society's occupational

needs." In 2017, just a few short years

away, the profession will turn 100. Our

goal is to join AOTA in celebrating

where we have come from, and consider

how to advance occupational therapy

into the 21st century. Specifically, our

Kansas Conference will be focusing on

what we as occupational therapists can

do to support and advance both our

profession and ourselves professionally

to prepare us for the challenges ahead.

We are excited to bring you some

amazing and inspirational keynote

speakers again this year. Keynotes include Andy Marso, a Kansas quadruple

amputee speaking on his experience with occupational therapy, and Brent

Braveman, who will discuss the opportunities available to occupational therapy

relative to the ACA and health insurance reform.

We are also introducing a new venue this year – Roundtable Discussions. For

90 minutes on Friday evening you will have the opportunity to network with

friends and colleagues regarding a variety of multiple topics and practice

issues. We will even provide munchies and bottles of wine!

Hello fellow OT’s. I hope you all had a safe and happy 4th of July celebration. I would

like to start off by taking a moment to thank those of you that have/are currently

serving in the armed services or who have family that serves this great nation. In

honoring the veterans this year, I realized that I hadn’t ever personally recognized the

OTs that serve our military men and women. SO THANK YOU.

Celebrating Independence also reminds me of our great profession. As occupational therapists

and occupational therapy assistants we utilize our knowledge and skills to help others restore

their independence for a more meaningful life. Independence is important to everyone. Playing a

major roll in helping others obtain independence is what makes our profession great, and

extremely rewarding. Be proud of the impact you have on others and never lose sight of the

importance of your dedication, creativeness, or expertise.

Not much new to report at this time, but I am excited to announce that recently Hawaii OTs

became licensed in their state. This marks the 50th state to fully license OTs. For several years

now, each state becoming licensed has been a priority to both protect the consumers as well as our

profession as a whole. We continue to make strides in the right direction as it relates to protecting

our profession nationally.

I hope you all are planning to attend the upcoming KOTA Conference - September 11-13 at the

Hyatt in downtown Wichita, Kansas. I am looking forward to seeing you all there.

I hope you all have an amazing time enjoying the rest of your summer.

During past years, the Kansas Occupational Therapy Association has recognized

distinguished Kansas colleagues and their important contributions to occupational

therapy in the State of Kansas through our Award for Clinical Excellence, OT/OTA of the

Year and Volunteer of the Year Awards. Last year in 2013, we were proud to recognize Kori

Turney as Kansas Clinician of the Year, and Wendy Hildenbrand as KOTA’s Volunteer of the Year.

It is time again to consider nominating a colleague for these awards at our upcoming Annual

Conference September 11-13, 2014. The deadline for nominations is August 25, 2014. Award

forms are available by clicking on the following links:

Award for Clinical Excellence

OT/OTA of the Year

Volunteer of the Year

The enhanced stature given to someone when they are recognized by their colleagues with an

award at the state level is unsurpassed, and it goes a long way to support excellence and growth in

our profession, as well as to expand appreciation of occupational therapy to our patients and clients

and to the public at large as well.

Please take a moment to identify a deserving colleague and then nominate that person for the

appropriate award. Awards will be presented during lunch at the Annual KOTA Membership

meeting at the Conference on Saturday, September 13, 2014. Thank you for your support of your

colleagues and the occupational therapy profession.

KOTA Call for Awards Nominations By Diane Pickel, OTR/L

Calling all procrastinators! Did you know the end of the CEU Cycle is March 31, 2015?

Yep - that's next March. How many of your required CEU hours do you have completed?

Receive up to 20 CEUs - that's up to half of the CEUs you need for the 2013-2015 CEU cycle … In

a one 2.5-day Conference! All CEUs are pre-approved and accepted by our KOTA CEU Peer Review

Committee.

Meet and greet with fellow OTs and COTAs and visit with our fun vendors, all while advancing

your career and supporting your professional association. Don't put yourself in a position

scrambling for CEUs before the 40-hour-CEU-deadline of March 31, 2015.

Only $225 (early bird, member Conference rate) for 20 CEUs - you can’t afford to miss this

Conference. That's only $11.25 per continuing education hour. Don't think to yourself, ‘Well that

sounds like a great opportunity but…’, because an opportunity like this will not come along again

before the continuing education requirement deadline approaches for this cycle.

As always, we're here at the KOTA Central Office if you have any questions, or if there is anything

we can do to assist you.

KOTA Executive Director’s Report By Amy Dubach

Greeting from Dory Sabata!

I joined the KOTA Board mid-term and was recently re-elected as your

Government Affairs and Reimbursement Officer. In the past term, I

planned the 2014 Legislative Day at the Hill in Topeka, assisted our

lobbyists with legislation regarding expansion of services for people with

autism, and have heard from a few KOTA members about reimbursement

challenges. I look forward to knowing more about OT practitioners across

our great state and helping to advocate for our services.

I earned my OTD in 2002 from Washington University in St. Louis, and

have spent most of my career focused on older adults and aging-in-place.

I also have been involved in providing continuing education. Since

joining the faculty at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2007, I

have been helping to prepare future OTs and develop practicing therapists for innovative practice

and leadership. I engage students through experiential learning ranging from community-based

service learning to primary care interprofessional teamwork.

I reside in Kansas City, Kansas with my husband, daughter, and our black lab (with a neurological

condition resulting in paw drop). I look forward to meeting some of you at the KOTA Conference

this year!
