Greetings Everyone,

The end of summer is near and with it comes the September and October newsletter. I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful days that we had this summer. However, as time goes on so to do the seasons and Fall will soon be with us. A time when the leaves will change and the temperatures will get cooler. Oddly enough September and October, from what I have been told, is the best time to pick apples. It seems this is the time of year in which they have matured enough for us to pick and eat. While I was in New England fall seemed to be a time when you could find many products that had apple in it like apple pie, apple cider, apple butter, and even apple doughnuts. Apples seemed to be quite the thing out East and I imagine they are also well liked around here.

Speaking of apples there is a prayer I remember saying as a kid affiliated with apples which was knows as the Jonny Apple Seed Prayer. I believe it is quite popular with youth groups due to its rhythmic nature and overall appropriateness of this prayer of giving thanks. For those of you who are not familiar it goes like this: “Oh the Lord is good to me and so I thank the Lord for giving me the things I need; the sun and the rain and the apple trees the Lord is sure good to me. Amen. Amen. Amen, Amen, Amen. Amen.”

Overall it recognizes the great things which God gives us and allows us to express our thanks and appreciation. Most often the Jonny Apple Seed Prayer is sung around meal times when many of us gather to say some type of prayer of thanks giving for all the things which God gives us on a daily basis. I myself before dinner will usually do a short and simple prayer that gives thanks. Mine is “God is good, God is great, let us thank him for our food. Amen.” Such a prayer I find along with the Jonny Apple Seed Prayer allows us to express our thanks to God not only for the food we eat but also for all the blessings and gifts which God gives us on a daily basis.

Speaking of eating and prayers; our hymn of the months is Savior, like a Shepherd Lead Us. I say eating and prayers because the lyrics talks of Christ feeding us and hearing us when we pray. The hymn was written by Dorothy A. Thrupp and the music was by William B. Bradbury. Thrupp was an English writer who lived in the late 1700’s to early 1800’s. She wrote a lot of articles for children and youth during her lifetime and was a very modest person. Bradbury was an American composer who lived and worked during the 1800’s. Besides composing the music for Savior, like a Shepherd Lead Us he more famously composed the music for Jesus Loves Me. Besides the aspects of feeding and praying the song Savior, Like a Shepheard Lead Us also tells us of Christ’s love and acceptance. The hymn gives us wonderful imagery of Christ being our ultimate Shepheard tending to us and leading us into a life and relationship with God. Overall it is a wonderful hymn which affords us the chance to sing about how Christ is a part of our lives.

So for the months of September and October let us enjoy the coming change in the season. Hopefully we will find some good apples for which we can give thanks along with all the other blessings that come our way on a daily basis. We can also sing about all the wondrous things which Christ gives and does for us as our Shepherd. May God bless us all this and every month.

Shop in Heaven’s Grocery Store

I was walking down life’s highway a long time ago One day I saw a sign that read Heaven’s Grocery Store

As I got a little closer, the door came open wide, And when I came to myself, I was standing inside.

I saw a host of angels; they were standing everywhere. And one angel said, “My child, shop with care.”

Everything a Christian needed was in that grocery store. And all you couldn’t carry you could come back the next day for

more. First, I got some patience, love was in the same row.

Further down was understanding, you need that everywhere you go. I got a box or two of wisdom, a bag or two of faith.

I just couldn’t miss the Holy Ghost for He was all over the place. I stopped to get some strength and courage to help me run the race.

By then my basket was getting full, but I remembered I needed some grace.

I didn’t forget salvation, for salvation that was free. So, I tried to get enough of that to save you and me. Then I started to the counter to pay my grocery bill.

For I thought I had everything to do my Master’s will. As I went up the aisle, I saw prayer and just had to put that in. For I knew when I stepped outside, I would run right into sin.

Peace and joy were plentiful, they were on the last shelf. Song and praises were hanging near so I just helped myself.

Then, I said, “Now how much do I owe?” He just smiled and said, “Just take them everywhere you go.”

“How much do I really owe?” He smiled and said, “My child, Jesus paid your bill a long time

ago.”

Apple Time

It’s apple time, and under trees Bowed down with globes of red,

The fruit lies crimson as the dawn Upon a green-grass bed.

It’s apple time, and every bite Is crisp and tangy-sweet, A joy to every passerby Who pauses there to eat.

It’s apple time, ripe apple time, And the harvester knows now

What miracles of taste can come From sun and rain and bough.

Autumn Symphony

Marie Daerr

Autumn, too, has its song . . . A deeper note

Than Spring’s; the voice of southward flying birds;

The melody of wind that walks through leaves.

Copper and gold; the quiet, whispered word

Of the first snow, a brief and gentle sound.

Spring’s voice was youth, unfettered, laughing, free.

Now in the autumn I hear sweet content

And wisdom born of rich maturity.

I listen to this song, a medley wrought

Of bird and wind and tree and fruitful sod.

And find in every strain that greets my ears

The music master’s tone, the voice of God.
