By Steve Lansdale

For many, collections evolve from a way to enjoy a subject of interest into a way of celebrating particular people. This certainly is the case for Dennis Dailey.

Growing up in North Platte, Neb., Dailey was friends with Jeff Agler and his sister, Pat. In 1964, when Dailey was about 8, Pat purchased a copy of the Beatles’ I Want to Hold Your Hand, and at the risk of oversimplification, Dailey’s life changed forever.

“The first time I heard that song I was just mesmerized by it,” Dailey says. “I played that thing until I wore it clear out. That was the first piece of Beatles memorabilia I ever purchased … and I still own it. That would be pre-Ed Sullivan Show appearance – seeing them on The Ed Sullivan Show absolutely cemented it for me.”

What began as a one-time hand-me-down from Pat over the years has mushroomed into a trove of all things Beatles-related. He complemented his albums and 45s with photos and sunglasses, jukeboxes and pinball machines, promotional marketing pieces, and lunchboxes. His collection swelled until it filled a room in his house, until he and his wife, Connie, built an addition – largely for the collection. He even recreated the legendary Cavern Club, the Liverpool venue where the band was first seen by Brian Epstein, who later became the group’s manager.

The collection, he says, “just kept growing. We have thousands and thousands of pieces.”

The Beatles share space with State Fair of Texas mascot Big Tex in this 1964 souvenir program.

Whether it is the world’s largest collection of Beatles memorabilia is a matter of debate, but if it isn’t, it definitely is on the short list.

“I know several collectors who have huge Beatles collections, and I always have taken a step beyond what they did, because I included newer stuff,” Dailey says. “The Guinness Book of World Records lists some guy in South America that it claims has the largest collection, but from the pictures I have seen, I didn’t think that collection held a candle, compared to what my wife and I have. Maybe we’re not listed [in Guinness] because we have so many things that really are groups of four, of 10, of 50 items, and we just count them as a single item.”

“What’s amazing about the collection,” adds Garry Shrum, consignment director for Heritage Auctions’ entertainment and music department, “is how thorough it is, how complete it is. Someone else might have a particular Beatles lunchbox, but if it was made in six different colors, this collection has all six. The effort he put into making this complete is unbelievable.”

Dailey was fortunate that his wife already had an appreciation for the Fab Four when they tied the knot.

“Connie always was a fan, and when we met, she was aware that I had a few records,” he says. “I guess I kind of educated her about the culture of the Beatles, and this became a partnership, a joint venture. We have done the same with our children and grandchildren, and really have an atypical Beatles family. They’re all aware of the culture that surrounded the band.”

The Daileys now have decided to downsize – a decision with which they have wrestled for five or six years – and have consigned the collection to Heritage Auctions, which will split it up over several auctions over the next few years, beginning in November 2017. They are keeping their Beatles history – the records, the tapes, the books – but are offering an incredible array of everything else, from concert tickets and programs to Beatles-themed toys.

“I always loved the toy musical instruments – the guitars, the drums,” Dailey says. “Those are some of my favorites, for sure, and it was always extra-special if I could find those pieces in their original packaging. I also always loved the vintage advertising pieces.

While he has come to grips with the idea of auctioning off the collection, Dailey hopes the new owner will have the space and ability to create the presentation he thinks the collection deserves.

“We have spent our lives building this collection, and we are extremely proud of it,” Dailey says. “We have had a lot of people – collectors, friends, family – who are in shock when they see the collection. But there’s that old adage: ‘You’re not going to be able to take it with you.’ That’s how it is with any collectible. Now is the right time.”

89152 Beatles Ink Signatures Obtained in Wales on July 19, 1963, in Framed Display. All four signatures: “Ringo Starr/ xxx”, “Paul McCartney/ xxx”, “John Lennon/ xxx”, and “George Harrison” on a 5.5” x 6” page which appears to be the back of a photo. At the bottom in an unknown hand is written: “July 19th Ritz Rhyl”. This was the first night of two sold-out appearances (two shows each day) at the Ritz Ballroom in Rhyl, Flintshire, North Wales. Interestingly, they stayed at the nearby Westminster Hotel- in the Bridal Suite. Sadly, the Ballroom burned down in 1968 (but the hotel still stands). Elaborately and archivally matted with a period photo and engraved plaque to an overall 16.5” x 32”. Light dampstaining and tape stains on the signature page. Overall Very Fine condition. From the Connie and Dennis Dailey Monumental Beatle Collection.

Starting Bid: $3,500

89153 Beatles Rare Oversize Capitol Records “Your Beatles Headquarters” Promotional Poster (US, Circa 1964-1965). Sight area 28.5” x 56.5” framed and matted under clear acrylic to an overall size of 34” x 63.5” overall. Likely produced in 1964 or possibly early 1965, this nearly 5 foot high retail display would have been hard to ignore! Printed in dark blue/black on a bright orange background, the group is shown in full profile with the proclamation “YOUR BEATLES HEADQUARTERS”. The Capitol logo is boldly placed over their legs. The poster was at one time folded in thirds for shipping and as such displays the resultant creases. The poster exhibits small punctures, scuffs, light scratches/creases to the surface and some toning and scattered staining. There is a small area of loss on the right edge and a small hole at the top center. This poster was obviously used, still a rare display in good condition. The Connie and Dennis Dailey Monumental Beatles Collection.

Starting Bid: $2,500

89154 Beatles - Original Capitol Records Meet the Beatles Moving Heads Store Display (1964). After an extremely successful year in their native UK, the Beatles finally broke big in America. Capitol Records was initially resistant of the group, but the infectious sound of “Yeah Yeah Yeah” caused the company to do a complete turnabout, resulting in a huge promotional campaign for their first US album, a reworked version of the boys second UK LP. Titled Meet the Beatles, the album took off in the early days of 1964, and it promptly knocked everyone on their collective heads, young and old alike. Finding early promo material for Meet the Beatles is tough, especially this incredible piece. Designed as a window display, this large cardboard stand-up features a famous Dezo Hoffman photo of the band in their collarless suits — note the cigarette in Paul’s hand (later airbrushed out for use on a 1984 re-issue picture sleeve). The heads of Paul, Ringo, George, and John were die-cut and sit about a half-inch from the display; a battery-operated mechanical device in the back causes the heads to sway back and forth. It’s easy to imagine a group of teenage girls gathered outside a record store window, swooning to the swaying Mop Top heads! Displays such as this were sent to select radio stations and retail outlets in early February 1964. It measures approximately 30.75” x 25.5” x 6”. These coveted displays rarely survive, as most were ruined by direct exposure to sun, and the few that are still around are usually missing at least one head. This item is complete and in good working order. It will be a standout item in even the most advanced Beatles collection, and is sure to cause some spirited bidding. Don’t hesitate on this; you know you want it! Fine condition, with minor tearing at the bottom center. From the Connie and Dennis Dailey Monumental Beatle Collection.

Starting Bid: $5,000

89155 Beatles Vintage Record Player with Original Box (NEMS, 1964). A wonderful example, this phonograph features both color photos of the group on the top and inside lid intact (many are missing the outside photo). The serial number tag is included, stapled to the outer box, serial number M440168. Only about 5000 of these players were ever produced, and very few of the boxes were kept. The boxes alone often fetch steep prices! Also includes original instruction manual, warranty slip, and accompanying paperwork and tags. In Very Good condition, consistent with age and use and the foam platter mat is crumbling. The player measures 17.5” x 6” x 10”, and the box measures slightly larger. From the Connie and Dennis Daily Monumental Beatles Collection.

89170 Beatles Concert Programs - Empire Theatre, Liverpool (1962) and Princess Theatre, Torquay (1963). Two rare specific-venue programs, as follows.

Empire Theatre, October 28, 1962: Although the Quarrymen had performed at the Empire, this was the Beatles’ first appearance at this important venue. In a NEMS-produced show, the Beatles were one of eight acts with Little Richard as the headliner but they were the only other act to get bios in this program. Their first single “Love Me Do / P.S. I Love You” had just been released. Eight pages, 6.75” x 8.5”. Small tear on back page, tape repair on front cover, Very Good condition.

89171 Beatles - Rare 1963 Royal Command Performance Program (UK, 1963). The Beatles November 4, 1963 performance in front of Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother found the band on the verge of world domination. The program measures 8.25” x 11.5” with the titles on the cover embossed in black with the queen’s royal warrant stamped in gilt. The program is staple-bound with a royal blue cord and tassel ornament. There were 19 acts on the bill that night at the Prince of Wales Theatre in London including Tommy Steele, Marlene Dietrich with Burt Bacarach at the piano, Donald Swann, Wilfrid Brambell and Michael Flanders, but undoubtedly The Beatles were the main attraction. Seventh on the bill, they performed “From Me to You”, “She Loves You”, “Till There Was You” and “Twist and Shout”. It was before their last song that a cheeky John Lennon uttered his now famous line: “For our last number, I’d like to ask your help. Will the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands? And the rest of you, if you’ll just rattle your jewelry...”. In Fine condition, with some light age toning, handling wear, and a smoothed vertical fold. 89185 Beatles Magical Mystery Tour Movie Poster (New Line, Mid-1970s). Originally filmed as a TV special for the BBC, this was the Beatles’ follow-up to their second movie, Help! A black-and-white photograph of the boys in their collarless jackets, mounted under glass, forms the base of the tray. The entire tray sits on four small plastic legs. An interesting little game consisting of two red wooden dowels and two plastic spinners with a repeating printed “Beatles” pattern, inside a sealed 4” x 12” plastic bag with an instruction card bearing images and facsimile signatures of the Beatles. The text repeats on both sides, as does a drawing of a young lad with a Beatle haircut playing the game which the package proclaims “Only You and the Beatles Know How It’s Done.” Excellent condition. From the Connie and Dennis Dailey Monumental Beatle Collection.

89255 Beatles Yellow Submarine Glove Puppets Store Counter Display Box (UK, 1968). As a tie-in to the new Beatles’ animated film, legendary English confectioner Joseph Bellamy & Sons Ltd. issued a line of candies contained in “glove puppets”. These puppets were in the shapes of the four Beatle characters from the film: John contained Jelly Babies; George contained Liquorice Torpedoes; Ringo contained Liquorice Allsorts; and Paul contained Mint Imperials. They were shipped to stores in a colorful two-part display box such as this one. Though this one is empty, it is still a great piece for display and missing in most collections, as it is thought that less than five are known to exist. Light wear and dents, Very Good condition. From the Connie and Dennis Dailey Monumental Beatle Collection.

Starting Bid: $500

89256 Beatles Rare Makeup Compact with Powder and Puff, Lipstick Holder, and Original Presentation Case by Kigu of London (UK, NEMS, 1964). A 3” diameter x 0.5” thick brass compact with a familiar B&W “collarless suits” celluloid-covered group photo on top. Inside the top is a mirror, facial powder (most of the original amount), and a powder puff for application. Together with the compact is a 2.375” x 0.75” diameter brass lipstick holder (empty) with an image of Paul’s Höfner bass and “The Beatles” printed in black. Both are contained in a 5.5” x 4.25” x 1” white textured case imprinted “Kigu of London” inside the lid; a black velvet bag to carry the compact in your purse without scratching it is also included. This is the first of these rare sets we have had the privilege to offer. The compacts are occasionally seen (often with no powder) but the condition, case, and the lipstick holder make this an incredible rarity. Light wear on the bottom of the compact, Near Mint condition. From the Connie and Dennis Dailey Monumental Beatle Collection.

89257 Beatles Magnetic Hair Game Complete with Wand by Merit (NEMS, 1964). This 8” x 10.5” heavyweight card has hairless images of the Beatles inside a hard plastic cover full of black magnetic shavings that can be moved into place using the included “magnetic pencil.” There are matching images nearby of the Beatles on each side apparently so the player will know where to put the hair. The front also exhibits 1964 copyright statements by J & L Randall, Ltd. and NEMS Enterprises Ltd. The text says “It’s Dynamic and Magnetic” and that it “Amuses the Whole Family”. The full instructions are printed on the back. Admittedly, it amused your cataloger just now for a short time. Printing is bright and clear but the card has some waviness to it and just a hint of damp staining at lower right. The magnetic pencil is present but its holder has been opened. Fine condition. From the Connie and Dennis Dailey Monumental Beatle Collection.

89258 Beatles - Revell Models Promotional Merchandising Brochure for Model Kits (1964). An 8.5” x 5.5” four page foldover pamphlet that opens up to reveal a poster inside, worthy of display. This was a piece sent to dealers in the summer of 1964 to entice them to stock up on the Revell Beatle Kits (models) in time to take advantage of the A Hard Day’s Night movie opening in August and the major North American Tour in August/September. The cover shows four artist drawings and the text: “Get Aboard The ‘Beatle’ Bandwagon Now... and Hitch-Hike Your Way to Extra Profits!” Inside, the Revell Sales Promotion Manager gives several handy merchandising tie-in ideas. Opened up, we see B&W images of the models and a list of concert tour dates and movie playdates. This would look great as part of your model display. The first of these Heritage has offered. Very Fine condition. From the Connie and Dennis Dailey Monumental Beatle Collection.

89259 Beatles “Autographed Portraits of The Beatles” Wagon Master Western Beans Rare Promotional Poster (US, 1964). On cardboard measuring 25.25” x 35”. “Your choice 25¢ Each and 2 Labels From Wagon Master Western Beans”. The portraits were painted by Robert S. Thorne, whose rendering was of arguable accuracy. It’s difficult to believe that Beatles management licensed this venture with the Springdale, Arkansas bean company but stranger things happened we suppose. Bumped at the corners with some wear along the edges; tack holes in the corners and edges; some toning/foxing and scuffing to the surface, otherwise in very good shape. The first time we’ve seen or offered this rare poster. From the Connie and Dennis Dailey Monumental Beatles Collection.

89261 Beatles - German Made Decorative Guitar With Beatlesque Tableau (Circa 1964). A 17.5” plaster guitar with bronzed finish featuring four very Beatlesque three-dimensional mop top heads on the body. Made by the German firm Achatit Schirmer in Cologne. Apparently the maker didn’t want to arouse the ire of the Beatles licensing police as the figures are quite indistinct, depicting only a sort of generic mop top. Some slight wear to three of the four Fab Four’s noses with some light wear around the edges and two very small cracks - one between two of the heads, and one on the reverse side, still in Very Good condition. From the Connie and Dennis Dailey Monumental Beatles Collection.

Starting Bid: $1,000

From the Connie and Dennis Dailey Monumental Beatles Collection.

Three examples are for the So Good Potato Chip Co., St. Louis, Mo. and one is an ad sample with “Your Ad Here in 3 Lines”. These were actually licensed by NEMS. All examples are slightly toned, George’s card has some damage to the print below his image and also has a tape remnant just above his head. Generally they are all in very good condition. 89277 Beatles - Rolling Stone First Issue in a Framed Display (1967). Founded in San Francisco in 1967 by Jann Wenner and music critic Ralph J. Gleason with money borrowed from Wenner’s family, Rolling Stone reported on the music and counterculture of the era, but did so by embracing more traditional journalistic standards rather than the radical politics of the underground press. In the process it become a cultural icon and boosted the careers of such writers as Hunter S. Thompson, Lester Bangs, Ben Fong-Torres, Cameron Crowe, Joe Klein, and even MTV’s Kurt Loder. Included here is the landmark first issue, its front page featuring John Lennon in character as Private Gripeweed from Richard Lester’s How I Won the War.
