The Consortium of Santiago and the University of Santiago de Compostela, aware of the importance of the transfer of knowledge and the scientifi c education needs of society, agreed in 2006 to create the ConCiencia program to invite the greatest intellects of the international scientifi c community to transmit their ideas to a city which is a symbol of culture and knowledge.

Under the auspices of the ConCiencia program, the Fonseca Prize of scientifi c popularization was created with the aim of promoting the transfer of this knowledge to the general public. In this task it is compulsory to acknowledge the role of mass media, which are the main instruments for this action.

The Fonseca Prize of scientifi c popularization is called 1. jointly by the Consortium of Santiago and the University of Santiago de Compostela, within the framework of the ConCiencia Programme.

The Fonseca Prize of scientifi c popularization, which 2. will have an international character, has the name of one of the founders of the University of Santiago de Compostela, an important fi gure in the constitution of Santiago de Compostela as a place of great intellectual and scientifi c wealth and as a creativity forum. It intends to acknowledge as an important value the interest and the capacity of showing the society the need and the beauty of knowledge in a simple and attractive way.

The candidates could be all those people having 3. an outstanding course in the fi eld of scientifi c popularization directed to the public in general by means of an effi cient use of the possibilities offering the mass media and/or by means of the development of innovative methods or means of scientifi c popularization. All those people who through their activity be a public reference encouraging the general interest in the knowledge and/or technological development in any fi eld of knowledge could also be acknowledged.

The prize will consist of a supporting diploma, a bronze 4. reproduction of Alfonso III of Fonseca, designed by the sculptor Mr. Ramón Conde, and 6000 1.

The members of the jury will be:5.

The Rector of the University of Santiago de Compostela, who would be the Chairman.The Manager of the Consortium of Santiago. The Coordinator of the ConCiencia Programme. Four people related with the fi eld of scientifi c popularization by proposal of the USC and the Consortium of Santiago.

The candidates will be proposed by groups or 6. recognized institutions, which will submit a report of the proposal, insisting on those aspects of the life and professional activity of the candidate that are related with the object of the prize.

The members of the jury can propose those candidacies 7. which they consider to fulfi l the merits to win the prize.

The jury can ask the proposers all the documentation 8. they consider necessary for the assessment of the merits of the candidate.

The jury will value those personal and professional 9. aspects of the candidates having a direct relation with the aim of the prize, taking into account that it is not a question of valuing exceptional scientifi c developments but exceptional contributions to the scientifi c popularization or to the stimulus of vocations and to the desire of knowledge in general or in specifi c fi elds of knowledge and of scientifi c development.

The presentation of candidacies, with the corresponding 10. documentation in a closed envelope, will take place in the registry offi ces of the university campuses of Santiago or of Lugo before 14:00 of April 15th, 2009, addressing the Chairman of the Jury, the Rector Magnifi cus of the University of Santiago de Compostela, writing clearly in the envelope: ConCiencia PROGRAMME – CANDIDACY TO THE FONSECA PRIZE OF SCIENTIFIC POPULARIZATION.

The prize, which may be withheld at the jury’s 11. discretion, will be awarded in Santiago de Compostela. There is no right of appeal against the jury´s decision, which will be made public before the end of May 2009.

The prize-giving ceremony will be held publicly. In 12. accepting the award, the winner commits him/herself to delivering a lecture of general interest based on his/her fi eld(s) of activity or specialization.

The participation in this call implies the acceptance of 13. these rules.
