We will ensure that the 2021 Summer Flower Show is planned and implemented in compliance with UK Government policy and guidance at the time of the Show’s delivery, and in line with localised advice from Cornwall Council who issue our event licence. For further information about the specific measures we will be taking to ensure the safety of Exhibitors, Traders, Volunteers and Visitors, please visit the Covid-19 area of cornwallgardensociety.org.uk/summer-flower-show nearer the time.

2021 CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

I have to confess to having felt buffeted by Covid-19. The cancellation of the 2020 Spring Flower Show was forced on us at a very late stage by the dreaded pestilence; and who would then have thought that we would be in the same position almost a year later with regard to the Show planned for this March? But not to be defeated by the virus, we were determined to hold a show this year.

Coronavirus permitting; and due to the immense efforts of the Show Director, Dickie Trant, and his team, and of the Show Committee chaired by Andrew Leslie, it has become a Summer Show, giving us the opportunity to show that Cornwall is not a one season gardening wonder. We are immensely grateful for the support of the Exhibitors and Traders in embracing the transformation with such enthusiasm. I look forward to welcoming you to the Royal Cornwall Showground, where you can be sure that every precaution will be taken to safeguard Exhibitors, Traders, Visitors and Volunteers alike; and hope that you will enjoy all that Cornwall and its gardens have to offer in high summer.

Sir Robert OwenChairman of the Cornwall Garden Society

ENTERING COMPETITIVE CLASSES

You do not have to be a member of the Cornwall Garden Society to enter.

Read through the Schedule and decide which classes you would like to enter. If you would like advice, contact the Entries Secretary who will put you in touch with the relevant expert.

Take a walk around your garden about a month before the Show and if you decide to exhibit, fill in the Horticultural Classes Entry Form in the centre of the Schedule and return it. We will confirm your entry and provide an Exhibitor’s Number which will give you free entry to the Show.

For Floral Art, Photography and Children’s Classes, please use the separate appropriate Entry Forms in the centre of the Schedule.

If two or more family members would like to enter then please use separate Entry Forms.

Please make sure that your Entry Form is returned on time – read the Timetable and Conditions in the Schedule carefully – we reach full capacity in many of the classes by the closing dates and late entries cannot be accepted due to limited space. There are no fees to enter exhibits in the Competitive Classes.

HORTICULTURAL CLASSIFICATIONS FOR DAHLIAS

The National Dahlia Society (NDS) produces a classified list of cultivars. A cultivar can only be shown in a class in which it is classified. NDS classifications are as follows:

Group 1 – Single-flowered Dahlias Single dahlias have blooms with a single outer ring of florets, which may overlap, the centre forming a disc.

Group 2 – Anemone-flowered Dahlias Anemone-flowered dahlias have blooms with one or more outer rings of generally flattened ray florets surrounding a dense group of tubular florets, and showing no disc. Group 3 – Collerette Dahlias Collerette dahlias have blooms with a single outer ring of generally flat ray florets, which must overlap, with a ring of small florets (the collar) in the centre forming a disc. Group 4 – Waterlily Dahlias Waterlily dahlias have fully double blooms characterised by broad ray florets that are slightly involute along their length (longitudinal axis) giving a saucer shaped appearance to the bloom. The depth should be not more than one third of the diameter of the bloom.

Group 5 – Decorative Dahlias Decorative dahlias have fully double blooms showing no disc. The ray florets are generally broad and flat, and may be involute for no more than 75% of their length (longitudinal axis) or slightly twisted, and usually bluntly pointed.

Group 6 – Ball Dahlias Ball dahlias have fully double blooms, ball shaped or slightly flattened. The ray florets rounded at the tips, with margins spirally arranged and involute for at least 75% of the length of the florets.

Group 7 – Pompon Dahlias Pompon dahlias have fully double spherical blooms of miniature size, with florets largely involute along their length (longitudinal axis).

11

Page 14: The Cornwall Garden Society 2021 SUMMER FLOWER SHOW...and his team, and of the Show Committee chaired by Andrew Leslie, it has become a Summer Show, giving us the opportunity to show

Group 8 – Cactus Dahlias Cactus dahlias have fully double blooms; the ray florets are usually pointed, the majority narrow and revolute for 65% or more of their length (longitudinal axis), and either straight or incurving.

Group 9 – Semi-cactus Dahlias Semi-cactus dahlias have fully double blooms; the ray florets are usually pointed and revolute for more than 25% and less than 65% of their length, and broad at the base and either straight or incurving.

Group 10 – Miscellaneous Dahlias Any dahlias which do not fall into Groups 1 – 9 or Groups 11 – 14 (inclusive) such as Thistle Dahlias, etc. This group includes Dahlia species. Group 11 – Fimbriated Dahlias Fimbriated dahlias have blooms where the tips of the ray florets should be evenly split or notched into two or more divisions, uniformly throughout the bloom to create a fringed overall effect. The petals may be flat, involute, revolute, straight, incurving or twisted.

Group 12 – Star Dahlias Star dahlias have blooms with a single outer ring of florets surrounding the disc. Ray florets are uniformly either involute or revolute.

Group 13 – Double Orchid Dahlias Double orchid dahlias have fully double blooms showing no disc and have triangular centres. Ray florets are narrowly lance shaped and either involute or revolute.

Group 14 – Paeony Dahlias Paeony dahlias have multiple outer rings of ray florets surrounding a disc, ray florets are flat or slightly involute at base and are flat or are to some extent revolute.

The 2015 National Dahlia Society Classified Directory has subdividedGroups 4, 5, 8, 9 and 11 for show purposes as follows:

Giant: More than 250mm in diameter Large: Between 200mm and 250mm in diameterMedium: Between 150mm and 200mm in diameter

Small: Between 100mm and 150mm in diameter Miniature: Not exceeding 100mm in diameter.12
