I spoke about Correctional Nursing history and professional practice, and Mary Muse’s Proposed Framework for Correctional Nursing Practice. As always happens when I am researching a topic about which I will be speaking, I find something “new;” something I probably have seen in the past many times, but at that moment, was not relevant to me. It is like suddenly “seeing” all the Chevrolet Sparks on the highway once you have purchased one. This time, it was the term “professional nursing practice.” We all use it, but what does it really mean? I went on a search and found many elements of it - like professionalism and the importance of having a framework, but there was not a succinct definition. Many, many organizations included a description of the professional nursing practice in their organization. Many included a model or framework and use of the Nursing Process, which I was very happy to see. All included a reference to the American Nurses Association’s Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice for Nurses (2015) as the foundation for its organization’s professional nursing practice. I have only seen one correctional healthcare organization address correctional nursing professional practice in its policies and procedures, but I am hoping that there are more. Even if your organization does not address correctional nursing practice in its policies and procedures, know that your professional nursing practice as a correctional nurse is based upon the Correctional Nurse: Scope and Standards of Practice, and as such, you are obligated to know what is included in your scope and standards of practice and to always practice within them. Correctional Nursing is the backbone of correctional healthcare, and our patients’ safety relies on our nursing practice. If your organization and/or facility is silent about Correctional Nursing practice, I encourage you to speak up and ask that it be addressed in your policies and procedures. Inclusion will clarify Correctional Nursing practice and acknowledge the importance of Correctional Nursing in your program. Until next month, thank you for what you do, and please, Stay Safe! Newsworthy Notes Currently, the Nursing Advisory Council of the NCCHC Multi-Disciplinary Education Committee is offering a four-part webinar series entitled How to Achieve Success as a Correctional Nurse Manager . Week one has already been presented, but enrollment includes access to the recorded sessions. In addition to four continuing education hours, one per session, a completion exam will be offered which, if successfully passed with an 80%, will award a Certificate of Completion of the series. The American Correctional Association will hold its 151st Congress of Correction on August 11-15, 2021 in Nashville. It will include virtual and in-person activities.
