THE CORRELATION BETWEEN LISTENING ABILITY AND READING

ABILITY OF FOURTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH

DEPARTMENT AT UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG

ABSTRACT

Comprehension and understanding are essential parts in listening and

reading. However, their difference in receiving information from sound on

listening and graphic symbol on reading always become interesting topic to be

discussed. The objective of this study was to know the correlation between

listening ability and reading ability of fourth semester students of English

Department at University of Muhammadiyah Malang.

This research used correlation study to find the relationship between

listening and reading. A quantitative approach was used to analyze the data

collected that calculated using Pearson Product Moment computation.

The sample of this study was class 4G which consisted of 28 students who

were cluster randomly selected from 10 classes of the total population of 284

listening VI students. The instrument of this study consisted of 25 listening test

items and 25 reading test items which were taken representatively from TOEFL

Paper Based Test (PBT).

Based on the result of finding, the mean score of listening test was 57.14

and reading test was 53.29. the statistical method of correlation found that rxy=

0.36. The degree of significance showed that rt 5%= 0.374 and rt 1%= 0.478.

Those result showed that there was no significance positive correlation between

listening ability and reading ability.

Key words: Correlation, Listening Ability, Reading Ability
