From Marbella to the Arctic Circle

Classics at Lake Viñuela

Halloween on the Costa

As the mist and fog of Hal loween has now dissipated and we are just left with the problem of how to get all that makeup off our collars, we can now forge ahead to the autumnal season and Christmas. Did I say Christmas, well I think am allowed now its November. This year they even had the Trees in the shop along with the bikinis in the summer! In this issue we have some great Halloween photos from the local bars and we bring you the conclusion of the 'Marbella to the Arctic Circle' adventure. We also have had, not one, but two great birthday bashes to celebrate, more inside. Also not forgetting the Thai Moon Festival and its fantastic sky lanterns, which as usual, just adds to the number of UFO sightings over Fuengirola every time. We were going to bring you an update on the road from Fuengirola to Alhuarin and Coin, but just putting "It's just the sodding same" would not really fill a page. We would like to thank Jenna and Holly at Someplace Else on Halloween night for posing for our front cover. Finally don't miss the Lions Christmas Fayre at the Tamisa Golf Hotel on the 29th November when the real Farther Christmas will be in his grotto and I will be sitting on his knee first. So have a nice November while I now start to panic about our bumper Christmas issue.

Loy Kratong Festival The Thai Festival of the Moon

4

Another year later and another fantastic evening of magical ambience and fine cuisine was traditionally delivered by friendly and attentive staff at the Molino del Cura Restaurant. The celebration was Loy

Krathong which is a festival of Thailand annually given on the twelfth lunar month. On arrival to the restaurant the guests were given florally

decorated candles to light, float upon the water, and make a wish. After dining amongst the enchanting surroundings we were delightfully entertained by a

traditional dance sequence beautifully performed by Best, the restaurant manager. We all retired to the large terrace where lanterns were lit and sent off into the moonlit sky, when again a wish should be made for good luck. If the balloon rises far and high, it indicates prosperity and these are a symbol of knowledge and light to guide you through the path of life. Molino del Cura is a highly acclaimed Thai Restaurant which delivers an experience never to be missed.

On the 16th October, Jean and Bev opened their doors of the Phoenix with one aim in mind and that was to raise money for a young boy, Tomas Leighton who is suffering from West Syndrome. The main fund raiser was Wayne Redman who competed in the Great North Run and raised an incredible 1,950.00€. Craig Thomson organised the raffle with prizes donated by: The Tamisa Golf Hotel, Forum Hair and Beauty Salon, Hydro Cleanse in La Cala, Moments Kashmiri Restaurant and of course The Phoenix Lounge. The night was a great success with face painting and entertainment from Dave the Brave with his karaoke disco, but the star of the evening was the little boy himself Tomas Leighton accompanied by his Mum and Dad. Tomas was born with West Syndrome, a form of children's epilepsy, cerebral palsy and totally blind. He couldn't lift his head up as he had no strength in his neck. He also couldn't sit up or

open his hands. Following intensive therapy and wearing calipers on his legs, he now holds his head up, sits unaided and can pick things up with his hands. His speech is improving and he is now able to say a few words. He can walk a few steps with the aid of a walking frame. His parents Jill and Jon Leighton adore the little boy and wouldn't swap him for the world. He is like a shining determined star to them. He enriches the lives of friends and family around him giving endless love and affection to all who know him. Tomas' progress can be seen online at: www.youtube.com and search for TOMAS LEIGHTON.

When the cooler weather is upon us, a bowl full of hearty soup, fills and warms one up. So enjoy an uncomplicated, but wonderfully flavoured fish soup, using a combination of fish and shellfish that you like, but avoid oily fish. Serve with some warm crusty bread for a satisfying meal.

Method

1. Soften the onion, celery, fennel and garlic in 2 - 3 tablespoons oil, over a low heat, without browning (about 15 minutes). 2. Add saffron, bay leaves and thyme, and chilli if using, followed by the tomatoes, stock, white wine and Pernod. Bring to boil and cook briskly for 5 - 10 minutes.3. Add the mussels, clams and prawns, cover and cook for 1 minute.4. Then add the fish chunks and squid. Turn down the heat and cook for a further 4 - 5 minutes. It is important not to overcook or stir the soup now, or the fish may break up too much. (Remove any mussels or clams that don't open)5. Taste and season accordingly.6. Sprinkle parsley into soup and serve up immediately with the warm crusty bread.

1 tablespoon Pernod300 ml dry white whine1 lt fish stock (I made mine from 500 g prawn heads and skins)1 chilli (optional)300 g skinless white fish fillets, cut into chunks500 g selection of live mussels, cleaned and de-bearded, clams, squid, thinly sliced etc300 g cleaned prawnsSalt and freshly ground pepperParsley, finely chopped

2 - 3 tablespoons Olive oil1 onion, finely chopped2 sticks celery, finely chopped1 fennel bulb, finely chopped2 cloves garlic, finely choppedPinch saffron, ground2 Bay leavesSprig Thyme400 g Tomatoes, skinned and seeds removed, finely chopped

You can think what you like and you can like what you think. Great minds think alike. But if you are in two minds about that, you need more food for thought.

The lust in your loins will reach a peek in the middle of the month and this could be a very interesting time to say the least. Or, it could just be a bad case of constipation so always be prepared for both.

Your stars are on the move and you may feel a little unsettled, but this could be due to the meal you ate in bed. Remove the crumbs and you should settle nicely.

So you're starting to think of Christmas already and wanting to know what's in Santa's sack for you. Unfortunately for you it's empty, the actual present is the sack and you get it at Christmas.

When it comes to the zodiac , Leos are well known for their practical thinking, logical minds and only believe only what they can see or touch. So why do you read horoscopes?

Trusting the people around you can be a tricky thing. Just because you have known them for a while doesn't make them trustworthy. I don't even trust myself.

You punch someone on a sailing boat trip when you mishear what they say. The words will actually be "stubborn anchor"

The power of speech is a fantastic thing but you may encounter a problem soon. This will be when you accidently connect your mobile to a loud speaker during phone sex. Be safe, use text!

Next it will be your birthday and then it will be Christmas and you're thinking about what to do for New Year. You become older and whiter, so plan to tan in 2010.

Towards the end of the month you will be so happy as things will come together. You will be like a dog with two tails. Yes, a freak.

You are born to stand out, this will show itself in its true form soon when you are caught in the headlights of a police car, relieving yourself at the side of the road.

Things are not always as transparent as they appear and that's not just your dirty windows. It's your glasses, you can't see the muck.

hen many British people who come to the Costa de Sol and wonder how they are going to keep Wactive, they should join a club, one of the sports

that are very popular is Lawn bowls. It is a good social introduction to life on the coast. There are eight clubs along the western Costa del Sol, so there is bound to be one near to you. The beauty of lawn bowls is that it is not too expensive and it does not matter how old you are. Bowlers are mostly retired people but some are still working. Some have been members of bowls clubs in the UK. Others never bowled till they came here to live. Mijas Bowls Club has undergone a makeover. A new green with a new carpet, there has been a big improvement to the out side of the club house. We have put up a permanent sun shade and a new bench. The car park has been tided up and looks much better. All the out side has been painted and is clean and tidy.

It's now a club for us to be proud of and every one is looking forward to a new season of bowling. There is a good feeling about our future and we look forward to seeing old and new friends. It looks likely that it's going to be a very enjoyable season. The club is open Tuesday and Thursday Mornings 10.00 for 10.30 am, and 1.30 for 2.00 pm also Sunday morning 10.00 for 10.30am.We have a fully qualified coach and our bowling classes for new bowlers will be starting next month. If anyone would like to learn to bowl do phone us,You can contact our club by phone 952 466 038, by our web site www.mijasbowls.org or email or our secretary [email protected] By Sheila Graveling

Charity expedition from Marbella to the Arctic in only 4 days & 21 hours

he expedition that left Marbella on the 21st of September in two old SEAT Marbella to raise Tawareness about EB (Epidermolisis bulosa) across

Europe, reached the Arctic in only 4 days and 21 hours. The Epydermolisis Bulosa, also know as the Butterfly skin condition is a non curable genetic disorder classified as a "rare disease" that causes extremely fragile skin. Unfortunately most of the people and even most of the doctors ignore this condition. Therefore initiatives like this expedition are key to raise awareness and help the DEBRA charities which are the organisations that work for people affected by Epidermolisis Bullosa in different countries.

The expedition has counted on the support of different private and public organisations from different countries, such as the Town Hall of Marbella, where the expedition was inaugurated by Mr. Manuel Cardeña, Marbella´s Social Services Councillor. From there, Ross and his five friends, John Allen, Jon Short, Emilio Tesi, Shaun Dodimead and Jim Wright drove across France, Germany, Denmark, Sweeden and Norway until arriving to Arctic Circle, less than 5 days later. Ross describes the adventure as follows:

"We drove from Marbella to the Arctic, in two twenty year old micro cars in 4 days and 21 hours. We are tired and

To the ARCTIC

are part of the sucess. A difficult part of having an EB sufferer born into a family, or indeed being an EB sufferer, is the lack of public awareness and understanding, which leads to a constant and distressing need to explain to family, friends and strangers, what is wrong with you, your son, daughter, niece, nephew or grandchild. Any publicity we have helped to raise, we hope will go some way to raising the profile of EB, and all the money you have kindly donated to us will help DebRA ease the pain and research treatment for EB sufferers in the UK and worldwide"

You can read the diary of the trip in the expedition's blog in

exhilarated by our experience in the last nine days since leaving Southampton. During our time away, we've met people from all corners of the continent, from Spain right up to Norway along the way who have been affected in some way by Epidermolysis Bullosa. It was our wish to spread awareness of the disorder across the continent as well as raise money for DebRA, and we have acheived both of those aims. At the time of writing you have all helped us raise more than £3500 for DebRA in the UK, and help the DebRA groups in other European contries raise their profile on television, radio and in the news papers with our slightly off the wall charity drive. If EB is new to you and you heard about it through our adventure, then you

clubs lunch. Lake Viñuela is a man-made reservoir formed by a dam built across the Rio Guaro, at full capacity the lake holds around 170 million cubic metres and so provides much needed water to the whole area. Dotted around the lake are some delightful villages to explore; Rio Gordo for example is quite a large village which has changed little over the years. The houses are typical of the area some with interior patios, wells and stables. The town was built by the followers of the Catholic Monarchs after their army had camped there on its way to capture Valez in 1489. Tremendous support from members has already ensured that the 2010 Club Programme is packed full of great motoring days out, two and three day tours, parties and charity events. This month the club has been invited to the fabulous Ascari Race Circuit near Ronda "the most exclusive private racing venue in Europe" a fantastic opportunity for club members to do a few laps, it will be a truly memorable day. Later in the month sees the clubs third gourmet tour taking members along the scenic Costa de la Luz to Jerez and Cadiz. The cost of vehicle tracking has come down to levels where it is not only used widely now for fleet management, tracking delivery vehicles or just for the 'exclusive' high-end cars. Now you too can keep an eye on your kids as a deterrent not to drive fast or after hours, check up on your car when you go off on holiday, or just call up for a location when you forget where you parked next time you visit Malaga! But in todays rough times, it is stressful enough to have to deal with the inevitable stolen vehicle… facing lines of aggrieved victims waiting to file police reports from robbery to abuse, house breaking to domestic violence… and all in a language you don't master… Do you really belong there?

Localizadores Europa S.L. specialize in fast-tracking the whole process, from the moment you lose your vehicle to the moment it is back in your care. We handle the police reports, manage the hunt, chase and recovery in coordination with the civil authorities, as well as the insurance claim process. We will handle renewal or duplication of vehicle documentation and make sure your vehicle meets all local requirements. Don't even think "it will never happen to me"! Spain ranks 2nd in Europe for car theft. Over 480 cars are stolen every single day! Are you sure you are not next? Let Localizadores Europa S.L. bring you piece of mind by installing the latest GPS/GSM/GPRS satellite stealth technology tracking equipment in your car … it costs just €390 Euro + IVA for the device. beautiful area of Lake Viñuela. Situated about an hour's drive northeast of Málaga, the lake takes its name from the adjacent village and is set in the stunning landscape of Axarquia surrounded by the natural reserve of the Sierra de Tejeda mountains.Club Members met for breakfast at Venta La Nueva situated high up on the Montes de Málaga road, a short drive from Málaga city. After the all important event briefing by run organiser Brian Ladd the cars were away. An hour later the coffee stop

was at Venta de Alfarnate the historic 13th century Jailhouse and Coaching Inn on the old Málaga to Granada Road which in the past was prime bandit country! The memory of this time is kept alive by the Inn's museum which includes a well preserved prison cell where many a bandit would spend the night en route to the courts in Malaga. From here the classics wound their way through some truly stunning countryside with the final destination of Hotel Lake Viñuela, set in a perfect location on the edge of the lake an idyllic spot for the

up at God knows what time to make their breakfasts before they went to work. We now know how to fry an egg! We had great fun in the bar on a night it wasn't really like working, but we had a lot of late nights. In the end we took it in turns to get up and do the breakfasts. This didn't always work as sometimes none of us got up and the miners ended up going to work having only had cereal, but they didn't mind.

Stacey and Ash xxx

A couple of weeks later we received a copy of the Australian mining magazine in the mail. Yes, you've guessed: On page five were Stacey and Ashlie, complete with overalls and helmets, down a mine getting ready to blow it up. Along with the magazine was a note that explained how, having

got tickets to see an episode of Neighbours being filmed, they had arrived late and ended up watching it from the green room with the cast not yet required for filming. They had all then gone on to a party taking them with them.

What ever next?

everybody. That is, until somebody else comes in and asks for their usual and ends up with the wrong drink. To show how friendly the locals are, I happened to mention in conversation that we were living with no electricity, to emphasise the point I pulled a small torch, fastened to my key ring, out of my pocket and said, "This is the only light we have." The next thing I knew I was being frog marched out of the bar and across to a house where the owner spent ten minutes looking for a large torch for me to borrow. Word must have travelled fast because everywhere we went we were asked if we had power yet. The brother of the person we bought the house from must have been receiving an ear bashing, even though it wasn't his fault, because one night in the bar he approached me rather sheepishly and offered to run a cable from his house to ours, two hundred meters away.

The workmen arrived the following week to sort out the electricity. It was explained that they needed to dig a trench about twenty feet long and lay some new cable. Watching them was like having a tooth pulled. The digging took four days, and when they had finished the top was delicately cemented over. After they had gone I went out to examine the workmanship. As I said they had cemented the trench and smoothed it over with amazing precision, then in letters six inches high had autographed it: ADRIAN & MANUEL. It looked… different, but we still didn't have any electricity; the electricity company had to fit the meter.

The only light we had indoors was offered by the solar garden lights, and it was to be honest, pretty pathetic. As our budget and livers prevented us from going to the bar every night, it was agreed that we might as well go to bed when it got dark. That was 8 o'clock. So when the clocks were put forward an hour for spring it meant that we could stay up until 9 o'clock, whooppeeeeee!!!! One thing I've realised in Spain is that I am now very easily pleased.

The last e-mail from our daughters explained that they would be out of touch for a month, as they had just been offered a job at a gold mine… No worries there then!

E-MAIL FROM Stacey/AshlieBack in civilisation now, we absolutely loved working out at the gold mine. Most of the blokes were about your age dad, although there were a few younger ones. We had to get

aving arrived at our new house we decided to explore the village, first stop… the bar.H

The local bar was tended by a father and son, both named Fernando, the elder of which I couldn't understand a word he said. His Spanish had such an Andalucian accent it sounded more like Welsh. His wife, Adori, spent the evenings in the kitchen making the tapas. Can you imagine that in an English pub? "I've got an idea love, instead of watching Eastenders, you can spend the night cooking in the kitchen and we will give the food away to the punters." Yer right. I found that each time I went to the bar I had to explain that I wanted a Bacardi with diet Coke and no ice. To save time I explained to the bar staff that in England this drink is called 'a usual'. From then on, I would just go to the bar and ask for "usual, por favor." It made life a lot simpler for

n 1985 data suggested there were 30 million people with diabetes. Fast-forward 15 years and Ithe revised numbers were 150 million. Today -

less than ten years on the figure, according to new data, has risen to a staggering 285 million. The low and middle-income countries are bearing the brunt of this epidemic. Millions of people are still not diagnosed. The International Diabetes Federation is uniting with associations around the world for World Diabetes Day - the primary global awareness campaign. The date - November 14 - marks the birthday of Frederick Banting who, together with Charles Best first conceived the idea which led to the discovery of insulin in 1921. This is now a United Nations Observed Day.As the sun sets hundreds of buildings around the world will be illuminated in blue to mark the day - including monuments like the Empire State Building, castles, shopping precincts and airports…..as beacons of hope for all the diabetics. Not to be outdone, the La Cala de Mijas Lions Diabetic Support Group will be joining in this

campaign. "We have always stressed that education and awareness is a very necessary tool to help sufferers come to terms with the condition," explains Anne Bowles. "We tell our members they must be detectives studying their own bodies. Find out all they can from as many sources as possible. Language barriers with the medical teams give more stress and we are trying to help diabetics through this problem as they increase their awareness. Knowledge is everything!"Parque Miramar in Fuengirola has kindly offered us good space to help us promote this special day and we hope as many people as possible will come along and ask for a free consultation or test. Millions of people have diabetes but are unaware of this fact! We will be there from 10 am until 10 p.m. Saturday 14th November. If you would like to partake in this day - maybe light up one of your buildings or monument, hotel or café please email [email protected] or telephone Anne Bowles on 952 46 41 84 or mobile 607 879 450.

Don't let anyone say the Costa del Sol does not help diabetics!

a Cala Resort hosted the national selection competition for the World Golfers ' LChampionship last weekend. Held on Campo

America, the qualifier was 18-hole strokeplay with the maximum score at any hole limited at double the par. All participants were very enthusiastic as the competition offered a unique opportunity to represent Spain in an international sporting event during Marbella's reign as European City of Sport. The classified players, all coming from different parts of the region, were very excited and looking forward to playing the final in Marbella later this year, where they will have to compete with over 30 teams, each selected in its own country. The youngest player in the team is 16 year old Carlos Peláez Treviño, who combines golf with his studies at high school and is currently holding the number one spot in Andalucía for his category. Another player was La Cala Resort's club member Francisco Cervilla.Severiano Ballesteros is the Honorary Chairman of the event's Advisory Board. He says: "The concept of

the World Golfers' Championship is unique and important for all amateur golfers around the world. They have contributed and supported us professional golfers for decades. We owe them a lot!"The competition is designed to give amateur golfers the thrill and prestige of a playing in a global championship event. The first championship was held in 1995 in Florida, USA and the final has subsequently been played in: The Dominican Republic, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey and South Africa, in addition to different USA locations.

t is obvious that medical tourism out of the UK has been growing over the past few years. One of the most popular Idestinations being Spain, which offers a good

infrastructure of specialist treatment, especially on the Costa del Sol- the southern coast. European residents, retirees and long term vacationers demanded medical services offered in their own language. This international infrastructure, combined with a very good, the cost effective and easily available quality accommodation, the recent developments of NHS services and the advantageous climate. But there is more to it: What happens after an operation in terms of rehabilitation? Who cares for the now retired international residents who moved here early? What options do expatriates have to accommodate their Which alternative is there for seniors to keep travelling, although they may need a certain amount of care? Are there options available for international respite care breaks? These and more questions have been asked over the past yearsAccording to Torsten Lohr, head of the international sales and marketing department, some of the facts underlining the experience, dedication, but also the success of Sanyres are: Turnkey Projecting and construction of senior residencies for foreigners, an example being a Norwegian residence in Valencia. English, German, Dutch, Scandinavian Guest Relation staff. ISO Certified houses.. Over 75% Foreign arrivals in the international residencies. Intensive cooperation with local international Clinics, like the USP or Xanit and local international Associations like Age concern.

Why the success, what led to it?In the opinion of Torsten Lohr this is primarily conceived by client satisfaction and the warm and welcoming way of the staff Doctors and nurses are on site , not just "on call". Together with Physiotherapist, occupational therapist, social worker, Housekeeping and guest relation they form an interdisciplinary team. The international residences and resorts of Sanyres are of recent build (2003, 2006, 2008, 2009), modern and functionally equipped and fully wheelchair accessible up to the pool hoist. Private apartments. There is no need of a livelong lease or buying property, which especially now may seem an interesting option, as real estate prices are going down.Along the Costa del Sol , there is also the international home care service, offered in cooperation with Allianz -insurance.In 2009 Sanyres offers 4 international sites with serviced apartments: Marbella, Benalmadena, Madrid, Huelva. The international Residence and Resort in Puerto Banus might be considered the most prestigious, situated in a prime location, only 500m from the beach, half an hour from the airport.Enquiries and Reservation can be done q directly in the residence, Telephone +34 902 200 065 via the web contact on http://www.sanyres.es [email protected] Contact information:Torsten Lohr International MarketingGrupo SanyresC/ Cronista Rey Diaz14006 CordobaSpain

ow here's a very strange thing! Why is it that whichever country you visit on holiday they all Nappear to have amazingly silly soldiers? They

usually reside at the country's capital city and it appears to me that there is some kind of global competition going on in order to see who can have the silliest soldiers. We don't do too badly ourselves in the silly soldier stakes. We have the Beefeaters and they don't come looking a lot sillier than that. What about the Swiss Guards at the Vatican City in Rome? Phhhhhhooooooaaaaaa, chuckle, chuckle! Brightly coloured stripey girly dress type thingies with brightly coloured stripey stockings holding a long stick with a piece of metal on the end of it. Now; let's just say that some loony terrorist type people wanted to attack the Vatican. Out of a white Transit van they would jump with machine guns, hand grenades, smoke bombs and the lot. Up to the Vatican they would run, bobbing and weaving through the large pillars and porticos until they got to the sentry boxes where they would see their enemy 'The Swiss Guards'. You can just picture it now can't you?

'Ha ha ha ha; pheeeeeeeew, oh my, you're having a laugh aren't you? Heeeeeeee, who the hell are you then?' The terrorists are doubled up laughing now and peeing their knickers. 'Oh Christ; you can't be serious. I can't shoot you because you're a girly. They didn't tell me that I would have to fight a shop window manikin who looks like a stick of rock. Pheeeeeeew, look, I've wet myself now. Oh I can't stand this any more; I'm going home'.

What about the Greek Presidential Guards? Now they really are side slapping funny. They wear a three quarter length frock coat type thingy held tightly around the waist by a black leather belt. They then wear tights (or they could be stockings and suspenders) with a cord around both knees and a tassle hanging off it behind the knees. It's a bit like a ponsy shin pad in reverse-ish! They also have these humungously long shoes, the design of which must come from Charlie Corroley or some such clown. To top the shoes off, they have a big pom pom stuck to the end of the toe; the reason for which I have absolutely no idea. They then have a hat which looks like an upside down milk pan with a tassle hanging from it. How much do these guys get paid? It may just be me, but I would have to be paid an absolute fortune to get dressed up like they do. As if the uniform isn't bad enough; have you seen their walk? They kick their legs out in front of them like they are desperately trying to break wind or something. It's just not right!

Don't send the same terrorist type person to Greece or he will surely finish up in a lunatic asylum. He'll think that his terrorist boss is taking the mickey out of him.

By Stuart Wright

Amazingly Silly Soldiers

Then we have the guard at the Royal Palace in Monte Carlo who looks (a bit) like a British Bobby who can't dress himself properly. He has a fairly standard navy blue Bobby type suit on, Spats over his boots, loads of ribbons on his lapel and then a Bobby type helmet which looks as if he has just got it out of a Christmas cracker - phwoooooaagh, chuckle, chuckle!

Silly soldiers! They're only having a laugh aren't they?

Would they frighten you? I don't think so!
