The invention of the telephone has been both blessing and bane to this current generation. Mr. Bell made the world a better, safer

place with his phone, but I sometimes wonder what he would think if he could see how his “creation” has evolved into today’s communica-tion “monster”! I suppose he might say, “Great Scott”, or “Get out-a-here”!

I was born in Newnan and can remember what talking on the phone was like, but before my time, it was quite different. As I understand it, the first telephones in town were assigned a two digit number, starting with the first person to have one. I have heard that my wife’s uncle, Mr.

I. Walker Brooks, was assigned the number 82 for his clothing store, Barnett and St. John. As things progressed, even a four digit number was not sufficient, as we were now connected to Atlanta and other parts. To solve this problem, an additional three numbers, a prefix, was added in the mid 1950’s. It was the opinion, at that time, that the average human mind could surely not remember a seven digit number, so a plan was devised to make it “simple”, and it worked. In Newnan, we were assigned the prefix 253, but was named “Alpine”, then shortened to “AL”. So, as I remember it, our phone number was AL-3-5107. As Coweta grew, we ran out of numbers, yet again, and added other prefixes; 251, 254 and others. Then, because the Atlanta calling area was one of the largest in the country, we added an area code. Now we are expected to remember a ten digit number. I can definitely do it, but I’ll have to forget my social security number first.

The technology of phone equipment has also changed a lot. The early phones I remember had no dial or push buttons. You simply picked up the receiver and heard the phrase, “num-ber please,” by the (human) operator. A very short time later a dial was added and then the push buttons about 1969. This was all before wireless technology.

About the mid 1970s, somebody figured out a way to have a mobile telephone in a car. I think I was the second person in Newnan to have one; the first guy was the phone represen-tative. It was attached under the dash on what we used to call the transmission hump and had a rotary dial. The main component was about the size of a microwave oven and was located in the trunk. The dial must have been for looks, because to make a call, you dialed “O”, then spoke your number to the local “car phone operator”. But it worked! The best part, however, was the status symbol. I could say, “just call me on my car phone”!

The current technology, of course, is now the cell phone/ smart phone/iphone. They will make a photo, text, access the inter-net, open your garage door and probably remotely let the cat out. And sometimes, people even make a phone call. There’s one more piece of equipment which, I believe, is the “invention of the devil”. It’s that darned ear phone! I saw a woman in a parking lot the other day who was shouting, flinging her arms in the air, and jumping up and down. Since there was no one else around, I thought she might be having some sort of “fit” or convulsion. As it turns out, she had a phone hidden in her ear and was in the process of an altercation with some one. What would Mr. Alex G. Bell think of that?

Anyway, I’m happy to be living in the generation where we can use the technology avail-able for convenience, safety and pleasure. But if you come into my office talking on a “hid-den” phone, please place your fist on your ear with you little finger toward your mouth so I wont think you’re “nuts”. And one more thing, always feel free to call our office at:

AL4-1421Thanks for reading the Shopper.

per an interesting and effective advertising medium.

Newnan, GA (July 5, 2011)—The Piedmont Newnan Hospital Outpatient Center has been awarded its third ACR accreditation, a three-year term of accreditation in computed tomog-raphy (CT), as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR). CT scanning—sometimes called CAT scanning—is a noninvasive medical test that helps physi-cians diagnose and tailor treatments for vari-ous medical conditions. Now one step closer to being named a “Center of Excellence” by the ACR, the Piedmont Newnan Outpatient Cen-ter was recently accredited in mammography, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided bi-opsy.

“The Piedmont Outpatient Center is focused on providing the very best in patient care and clinical quality to our patients,” said Rhonda Winkles, Piedmont Outpatient Center coordi-nator. “Our newest accreditations in breast ultrasound, ultrasound-guided biopsy and CT, in addition to our accreditation in mam-mography, further exhibit our commitment to taking excellent care of those who entrust us with their care.”

the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meet-ing ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physi-cists who are experts in the field. Image qual-ity, personnel qualifications, adequacy of fa-cility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Com-mittee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

The ACR is a national professional organiza-tion serving more than 34,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncolo-gists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medi-cal physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

The Piedmont Outpatient Center is located at the Summit Healthplex on Highway 34 East. For more information on the Piedmont Out-patient Center, visit piedmontnewnan.org.

Artery Plugging Can Make Walking Painful

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please explain peripheral vascular disease. I have never heard of it, and neither have people I have asked. -- C.D.

ANSWER: Peripheral vascular disease also goes by the name peripheral artery disease. Have you seen the TV ad where the young boy and his grandmother are walk-ing through a store where there’s a display on peripheral artery disease? The boy asks his grandmother if she has it. It’s extremely common. It’s the leg’s equivalent of heart artery disease. Both have to do with arteries clogged with plaque -- a buildup of cholesterol, fat and other materials.

Pain on walking is the prominent symptom of this illness. The pain occurs because the working leg muscles aren’t getting enough blood. They complain by sending pain signals. Calf pain is common when the obstruction to blood flow is in a thigh artery. Stopping and resting relieves the pain.

High blood pressure, a family history of this condition, a family history of heart disease, smoking, diabetes and increased cholesterol all contribute to it. The most important con-tributor is aging.

The family doctor can detect peripheral artery disease by noting a decreased pulse at the ankle. Greater evidence is obtained by comparing ankle blood pressure to arm blood pres-sure. The two should be equal. If ankle pressure is lower than arm pressure, the reason is a blockage in leg artery blood flow.

Treatment is similar to treatment for obstructed heart arteries. Affected people have to lower their cholesterol, lower their body weight, lower their blood pressure, stop smoking, control blood sugar and stay active by walking to the point of pain, resting and then continu-ing to walk. Doctors usually also must prescribe medicines to lower cholesterol and to facili-tate the passage of blood through narrowed arteries.

Sometimes an operation on the clogged artery is necessary. Often this can be done with a catheter that has a balloon tip. The catheter is threaded to the point of obstruction and inflat-ed to open up the artery. Then a stent -- a metal device -- is placed to keep the artery dilated.

The booklet on peripheral vascular disease gives the details of the illness and its treatments. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 109W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.

***

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Vacant Houses Take Longer to Sell

Statistics show that a vacant home takes twice as long to sell than a furnished home and we all know that in this real estate market, that can be a long time.

Buyers have more homes to choose from now, than ever. If you have a va-cant home on the market or are contemplating selling your vacant home, consider the following reasons why you should never sell a vacant house.

* People Don’t Buy Houses, They Buy Homes.

Buyers purchase homes based on emotions. The number one reason a buyer purchases a home is because it “felt like home”. If the room is va-cant it can feel cold and lonely. Once the home is professionally staged, it becomes warm and inviting. Bringing in just the right amount of furnish-ings and accessories can make the difference. Have you ever heard of an empty room being described as warm and inviting?

* Without Furniture, There Is No Frame of Reference

What is this room? Is it a dining room or home office? How big is this room? Without furniture it can be difficult to tell the scale and size of a room. Empty rooms actually appear smaller than those with furniture. When the buyer does not have the answers to their questions … they walk away. Don’t keep a buyer guessing, it only distracts them from consid-ering your home as a purchase.

* When A Room is Kept Empty, Buyers Focus on Negative Details.

A crack in the wall or the chipped tile on the floor is much more noticeable when there is nothing else to see. If a room is professionally staged, the positive features are highlighted and any flaws are de-emphasized. It’s not an attempt to hide the flaws, because the sellers disclosure statement will mention those, but an effort to show a buyer that once they move in, these things aren’t so noticeable.

* Only 10% of Home Buyers Can Actually Visualize the Potential of a Home.

Most buyers walking into your home have no imagination of the wonder-ful possibilities that it may have to offer them. They aren’t able to visual-ize if there is enough room for their furnishings and accessories. They just can’t picture it. Are you willing to take the risk of losing a sale because there was no furniture and accessories to help a buyer visualize the re-markable potential that your home has to offer?

Buy Confidence, Buy Quality, Buy …

‘Parity’ Is Buzzword

of 2011 Season

In 2010, 13 drivers won Sprint Cup races. David Ragan became 2011’s 12th. The Coke Zero 400 was the 17th race of the season, one shy of the halfway point.

They are Kevin Harvick (3), Kyle Busch (2), Matt Kenseth (2), Jeff Gordon (2), Carl Edwards, Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Ragan, Brad Keselowski, Regan Smith and Trevor Bayne.

Just as surprising are some of the drivers who still haven’t won races: among them Dale Earn-hardt Jr., Clint Bowyer, Ryan Newman, Tony Stewart, Greg Biffle, Juan Pablo Montoya, Mark Martin, Kasey Kahne, Jeff Burton and Jamie McMurray.

To cite one example, Stewart has won at least once in every season of his career, dating all the way back to 1999.

As such, it appears possible that NASCAR’s all-time record for win-ning drivers within a single season will be ex-ceeded. Nineteen driv-ers visited victory lane in 2001, 1961, 1958 and 1956.

Earnhardt, while con-gratulating Ragan, also said of Daytona, “I don’t know. It’s weird rac-ing.

“What kind of move can you make? ... There ain’t no move you can make. You just hold it on the mat and try not to wreck into each oth-er. You see how good we are at that.”

Sure, both Dayto-na victories this year, by Bayne and Ragan, were monumental up-sets, but the trend goes deeper than just restric-tor-plate tracks.

In Harvick’s three victories, he led a com-bined total of nine laps. Victories by drivers who actually dominated rac-es have been few and far between, most notably Kurt Busch’s Infineon Raceway triumph and Kenseth’s win at Texas Motor Speedway.

Track position has be-come exceedingly im-portant at most tracks. Fuel mileage seems at

least as crucial as speed. The ranks of adept road racers has thickened. The past five Sonoma (In-fineon) races have been won by drivers who had never previously won on road courses.

A few weeks back, it seemed as if the season was developing a pattern and that familiar stars were taking control. Perhaps that was the impression that was fleeting.

Coweta Vocal Artist Abby Mortenson

To Perform in NYC

With New York Grand Opera

Thirteen year old Abby Mortenson is a member of the female choral ensemble Zaphyra and a stu-dent of Pia Ugarte, who received her training at the Juilliard School of Music. Ugarte has recently released this information about the great honor about to be bestowed on Mortenson and two other students of her Ugarte Studio in Fayette County. Three selected members of the studio, Keiar-ah Redmond, Camille Edwards, and Abby Mortensen, will be performing as part of one of the most beloved and old summer traditions of New York. They will be joining New York Grand Opera as part of the chorus for the fully staged presentation of Puccini’s “La Boheme” in Central Park’s landmark, the Naumberg Bandshell. The performance will take place on Wednesday, July 20. Additionally to the performance and cor-responding rehearsals, students will be receiving a private master class with Maestro Vincent La Selva, Founder and Artistic Director of NYGO, as well as a bunch of other learning opportunities as will be learning how to navigate Manhattan and what the real life of a student looks like, music unions, etc. More information is available at these websites: www.TheUgarteStudio.com; http://zaphyra.net/Abby.aspx

Local Artists Featured in Senoia Gallery Opening

You don’t have to travel to New York or LA or

even drive to Atlanta to attend an art “opening,”

complete with beautiful art, interesting artists

and an elegant setting – you can find it right here

in Coweta County. Among the many fun and fas-

cinating things going on in historic downtown Se-

noia will be a monthly art opening and reception

at The Veranda Historic B and B Inn.

The last Tuesday of each month from 5:00 to

8:00 p.m., FAACE (Fine Arts and Crafts Entrepre-

neurs) and The Veranda have teamed up to pres-

ent the three or four artists whose work will grace

the walls of Verbena Gallery for the next 30 days.

The exhibits in the gallery will change and differ-

ent artists and fine crafters will be featured each

month, along with smaller works by other FAACE

members. The openings will be an ongoing fund-

raiser for Our Father’s House, a local mentoring

program for children in Senoia. The event is free

and open to the public, and light refreshments

will be served.

After an opening reception the evening of Tues-

day, June 28th, the featured artists for July are:

Michal Taylor-Phillips, a local art teacher who

creates mixed-media portraits and whimsical

scenes, Arlene Sewell, who paints with an empha-

sis on still life and landscapes, and Charles Tryon,

a sculptor who features portraits in clay.

Verbena Gallery is also open by appointment

and on Tuesdays for The Veranda’s “Tea on Tues-

days.” For more information, go to FAACE.org or

contact Laura or Rick Reynolds, Veranda owners,

at 770-599-3905.

Growing HouseplantsGrowing houseplants is a very enjoyable hobby for those who can-

not get outside, have no yard, or lack the time for larger outdoor proj-ects. Plants can help to clean our air of pollutants. They beautify our living spaces and add a sense of peacefulness and nature in the midst of our busy activities.

There are several things to consider when choosing house plants. Think about the height, width, color, texture and light requirements of each plant as they relate to the room and fur-niture where the plant will be grown. Does the plant suit the period of your room and furni-ture? An example would be a palm plant for a Victorian room. Geraniums would look appropriate in a Colonial cottage style room. Succulents might lend themselves to a modern room while Cacti have a southwestern feeling. Choose a size that fits the space without crowding and allow room for the plant to grow.

Light is a very important consideration. Try to match the amount of light the plant would have if growing in its natural setting. Philo-dendron, Sanseveria, and Aspidistra take very low light. Pothos, Peace lilly, and ferns need moderate light. Ivy, African violets, and palms like bright indirect light. Jade plants, Begonias and Caladiums thrive in direct morning sun or slightly back from a south or west window. Cacti, Aloe, Croton and Kalanchoe need full sun.

The usual indoor temperatures of 50º to 80º (best 65º to 75º) will do fine for most indoor plants. Some plants (like ficus) are very sensi-tive to drafts or sudden changes in temperature. Some plants need a certain temperature to set their blooms (such as Orchids). Avoid heat vents, fireplaces, and radiators. Don’t put plants next to window panes in winter or summer.

It’s also very important to know the moisture, humidity, and fer-tilizer and soil type each plant needs to grow well. Read plant labels carefully; ask nursery men or master gardeners; read books on horti-culture. Experience is an excellent teacher. Flowering plants need a fertilizer with a higher middle number — Phosphorus — which pro-

motes blooms and root growth (10-20-10). Foliage plants need a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10. Grasses like a higher first number — Nitrogen — which promotes stem and foliage (or leaf) growth. The last number — Potassium — is needed for overall vitality and health.

Watch for insects and diseas-es and treat accordingly. Clean, dust, and groom houseplants regularly. Do not let roots sit in water — drainage is a must. Re-pot plants with fresh potting

soil into slightly larger containers when roots fill the pots.
