T here’s been a lot of talk in the news recently about the forth-
coming end of the world. According to Mr. Harold Camp-
ing, The “Rapture” will take place on May 21st, sometime around
6:00 PM eastern time. If you happen to be reading this article,
one of three things has taken place. (1) Mr. Camping has been
ill-advised or has miscalculated the date, whereas our daily lives
will continue as usual. (2) He is correct and is now, along with
many others, entering the Gates of Heaven while being congratu-
lated on his precise mathematical skills. (3) The train has left the
station without you, as your name was not in The Book. You didn’t have a “Ticket”
did you?
Prior to “The Day”, I was thinking what I may want to do to prepare – just in case I
was found “absent” around here. I could write the head of the Internal Revenue Ser-
vice and state that any further forms or notices will be marked “Return to Sender”.
Then I realized that, although the IRS would probably be doing business as usual,
there may not be a sufficient number of employees at the Post Office to get my letter
out. I also thought I might not pay my current electric bill. But if Mr. Camping was
not correct, I might end up being in the dark instead of being in “The Light”. And,
inasmuch as my wife and family will hopefully be on The Train with me, I may just
let my life insurance lapse. But again, if Camping is correct, it would be just my luck
to step out in front of an oncoming bus, leaving my wife in a state of penury! One
other thing; I’ll have a lot of explaining to convey to my wife’s mother concerning all
of those “Mother-n-law” jokes I thought were so funny at the time. (I still think some
of them were pretty good!)
I have done some pretty stupid things along the way and I continue to make mis-
takes daily. I am in no way qualified to judge others as to their religious views and
practices or of their actions, whether heinous or virtuous. It is my personal opinion,
however, that, in spite of all my wrongdoings, I have my “Ticket” when the train
does leave the station. I did absolutely nothing to earn it, and all the good deeds and
money in the world couldn’t purchase it. I believed in my heart, and confessed with
my mouth that Jesus, The Christ, died on the Cross as a final and ultimate sacrifice
for my sins and yours. So, although I may be close to the top of your list of bad guys,
my “Ticket” is marked “Paid in Full”. Perhaps we will be on that train together when
it leaves the station, whether it be May 21st, October 21st or a thousand years from
now.
As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help
us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effec-
tive advertising medium.
But if Mr. Camping was not correct, I might end up being

Dr. Folk is board certified in cardiology, nuclear cardiology, echocardiography and internal medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology and member of the American College of Physician Executives and the American Medical Association. He has led and participated in several cardiology-related research projects.
Dr. Folk is married to Mary Ann, a former dietitian and active hospital-related philanthropist, with whom he has three children. He is an avid golfer and enjoys attending sporting events. He and Mary Ann enjoy walking, bicycling and traveling. They now reside in Newnan.

Project Cool helps elderly beat the heatCoweta County 911 staff, with assistance from Coweta Fayette EMC Opera-
tion Round Up, is well into 2011 Project Cool. Project Cool assists the elderly
in our community by providing fans to help beat the summer heat. Seniors
are especially vulnerable to heat related injuries and these fans can help.
With a $1,500 grant from Operation Round Up, 911 staff will be distributing
117 fans to eligible seniors in our community. The fans are being distributed
through the Coweta County Senior Centers.

Carla Cook Smith offers her 7th book, “Perspec-tives”, as a fundraiser to the Senoia Area Historical Society (SAHS) ~ until June 30 a portion of the sales of the book will go to the historical society. The 3rd in a series about life in Senoia, Smith’s book features lo-cal history, human interest stories and lots of laughs. Smith’s most recent book highlights Starr’s Mill and its community as well as Morgan’s Mill, the life of Bill Tinsley, whose grandfather “Doc” Tinsley is legend-
ary as “The Character of Senoia.” Farmers Ronnie and Susan Whatley, Paschal Company employee and longtime Senoia resident Martha Gill Clark, prank-ster James Barnette, and Senoia’s good ole boy Bobby Hatchett are also featured. Mary Ann Reese, Beverly Hicks and Martha Gill Clark tell tales from horse and buggy days. The accomplishments of Senoia’s female mayors are noted. Senoia residents share culinary se-crets via recipes that are interspersed throughout the
150 page book along with vintage photos from Senoia’s rich history.
The author notes, “Although my previous books have been around 100 pages, I had to increase the page length to 150 pages for this final book about Senoia which has a wealth of history in its treasure trove of heartwarming and laugh-out-loud stories from small town life. Cover girls on the front of Historical Per-spectives in Senoia have worked faithfully to protect
Senoia’s history for many years. Janet Baggarly has operated the Senoia Buggy Shop Museum in Senoia since her husband Walter passed away. The buggy shop museum was the only museum in town until the Senoia Area Historical Soci-ety opened a museum in their meeting house on Couch Street a few months ago. Nancy Roy and Joanne Utt worked diligently to ensure that the Senoia historic dis-trict was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Retired school teacher Mary Ann Reese was a voice coach for ‘A Christmas Memory’ and gave tips to actors based on her recollec-tions of Senoia’s history. Totsie McKnight worked to help grow the Senoia Library and shares sto-ries from her childhood at Lake Raymond for the book. Martha Gill Clark wrote the history of Senoia Baptist Church where she was a member for over 50 years.”
The book details the life of beloved school teacher Coral Moses Hand, de-picts residents on bi-cycles when they were “one size fits all,” shares the portrait of Starr’s Mill owner Allen Jones as well as publisher of Senoia’s newspaper, The Enter-prise Gazette and de-scribes life with photos of Atlanta Cracker and New York Yankee professional ballplayer Marvin Duke of Senoia.
Books are $15.00 each and benefit the SAHS through June 30th and are available at Scott’s Book Store in Newnan, Gail’s Antiques and The Welcome Center in Se-noia, outlying indepen-dent bookstores and ad-ditional places of business in Senoia.

The detour route will be US 27, Bexton Road, SR 54, Moore Road and Gordon Road. Our hope is to have the project complete and the road open by the beginning of school on August 8, 2011. • Luther Bailey Road will be closed through early November 2011 for demolition and removal of the existing bridge and the construction of a new bridge over Double Branch Creek. The traveling public will be detoured along Luther Bailey Road, Gor-don Road, Eastside School Road and Old Highway 85.• The bridge replacement on Moore Road over White Oak Creek Tribu-tary requires that the road be closed for removal and replacement of the bridge. The road will be reopened by August 7, 2011. Gregory Bridge Company is complet-ing this project and it is funded through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST.) The recommended detour is Gordon Road to Martin Mill Road to Scoggin Road.

Lighten Up - Just like we change our clothes from winter to summer, we can do the same for our homes. Change the throw pillows to a brighter, fresher color. Remove the heavy throw and change the rug from a heavy winter look to a light airy jute or sisal.
Re-arrange Your furniture. Free! Place your sofa on an angle. Cre-ate a reading nook in your bedroom. A dresser can be used in a foyer, dining room or family room. They don’t always have to be in a bedroom.
Bring in Some fresh flowers. You can use Free flowers from your yard or ask your neighbor for a few cuttings of their beautiful hydrangea bush. Rotate Your family Photos. Free! Remove all the family photos and replace with only 1/2 of the collection. Then every 6 months rotate them for the ones that have been in storage. Let your table tops breath for the sum-mer.
Paint. One of the cheapest, (although not always the easiest), ways to give a room a facelift is to change the color with paint. I say not the easiest because, the preping and clean up are always the most dreaded part of paint-ing. However, it is great at the end of the project to look back and enjoy your new look. It’s instant gratification!

Atlanta, GA May 25, 2011-“Thank you so much Chevrolet and Southtowne of
Newnan, GA!!! I am shocked and amazed and cannot wait to get my new 2011
Cruze!!!” These are the words that Kegan Isaac, winner of a 2011 Chevy Cruze,
posted on the “Chevy Drive for Perfection” Facebook fanpage. It doesn’t take very
much imagination to understand what young Kegan from The Heritage School is
feeling after winning a new Chevrolet Cruze from the Southtowne General Motors
Superstore in Newnan. However, it’s Kegan who should be thanking himself for his
dedication towards achieving a very difficult goal.
The Chevy Drive for Perfection is a program developed by Chevrolet and funded
by local Chevrolet Dealerships which rewards high school seniors at the partici-
pating schools who achieve a 98% attendance or better in their senior year. Prizes
included Wiis, flat screen TVs, iPods and gift certificates … and, of course, a 2011
Chevy Cruze for one lucky winner.
In addition to the prizes, Southtowne General Motors Superstore and other local
dealers raised and donated over $35,000 in cash to local area high schools. $7,500
went to 4 Coweta High Schools who snared over 20% of the money out of the 60
High Schools participating in the program. This extra money will go a long way in
procuring additional textbooks, supplies and equipment for the schools.
However, this was more than just free gifts and prizes for these dedicated young
adults. Don’t think for a moment that any of the participants involved took the event
for granted. Sure they had the chance to walk away with some really great prizes and
prize money, but the true meaning of the event was clearly not lost on one winner
who also posted to the “Chevy Drive for Perfection” fan page saying: “Chevy Drive
for Perfection isn’t about giving away cars and fancy prizes, it’s about helping
kids achieve their future goals by keeping them in school and helping them strive
for high attendance. Chevy, thank you again for what you are doing for educa-
tion and the futures of children all across America. This program has truly been a
blessing and impacted my life in ways you could never imagine!”

If you or a family member has been injured on the job, then chances are you would qualify for benefits under the Georgia Workers’ Com-pensation Statute. This statute was developed to insure that employees who are injured or disabled on the job would receive medical treat-ment and medical rehabilitation. The injured employee is also eligible for a portion of weekly wages. The employee who claims the benefits under the workers’ compensation laws cannot sue the employer for the injuries. The public policy behind workers’ com-pensation envisions a bargain between employers and an employee in which the worker gives up the right to sue the employer in exchange for a guarantee of workers’ compensation benefits.
Every employer regularly employing three or more persons shall pro-vide workers’ compensation insurance coverage. In most instances in-dependent contractors are not considered employees, and thus do not count toward the number of employees required for workers’ compensa-tion insurance. Of utmost importance to the employer when considering works’ compensation benefits is whether the incident occurred within the scope of the employee’s employment. Under the Georgia Workers’s Com-pensation Statute the employee is required to seek treatment within a des-ignated list of doctors called a Panel of Physicians. This list must consist of a minimum of six doctors. The employee may choose any one of the six. The panel must include one orthopedic physician.
Employees injured on the job are entitled to weekly income benefits if they are unable to work for more than seven days. They also receive two-thirds of their average weekly wage, but no more than $500.00 per week for any accident. If an employee dies on the job it is usually assumed the death is work-related. The employees’ dependents or beneficiaries are generally entitled to a death benefit.
Though workers’ compensation can be a benefit to the employee, the rules and regulations at times require the involvement of an attorney.

More Cat Condos for CowetaMore cat condos are coming to Coweta County Ani-
mal Control. Thanks to the generosity of the Holland Ware Charitable Foundation another set of cat condos will be added to the facility at Selt Road.
Cat condos sound a little luxurious, but they are more functional than fluff. The condos allow the cats to be separated with walls instead of open wire and to have individual ventilation of their cages (condos.) This significantly reduces the transmission of disease in the cat population at Animal Control.
The Holland Ware Charitable Foundation has do-nated more than $140,000 to Coweta County Animal Control in the last year for various projects, including cat condos and the construction of a new intake facil-ity, which is in the planning phase now.

Summer Salsa
When tomatoes and peppers are ripe and plentiful, folks will wonder what to do with all that produce. Sal-sa is one good option.
How hot the salsa is depends on the kind of pep-pers that are used. Peppers are rated according to their hotness on a scale called the Scoville Organoleptic Test. The hottest variety is habanero, with a rating of 300,000 Scoville Units. The habanero resembles an orange lantern. Typically, the hotter peppers are small-er varieties (1-3 inches at maturity) and are colored ‘green-turning-red.’ When working with hot peppers, be sure to wear gloves to prevent burns. Just cutting a habanero open, for example, can make a person’s eyes water!
Milder peppers tend to be larger (4-10 inches) and are ‘yellow-turning-red.’ Examples of milder peppers include Bell peppers and Sweet Banana peppers, which are rated at 0 Scoville Units, and so are very mild. More in the mid-range would be jalapeño peppers. They are rated at 5,000 Scoville Units and are tapered green or red chilies.
Adjust the spiciness of the salsa by selecting the type of pepper added to the mix. For a very mild salsa, use milder peppers. For a very hot salsa, use a greater pro-portion of hotter peppers to milder ones. Regardless of the product’s spiciness, don’t just add more peppers to make it hotter. The total amount of peppers should be the amount recommended in the procedure. The pro-portions are calculated out so that the recipe will be safely preserved.
It also is a good idea to try out the peppers you plan to use in your salsa by trying half of a hot pepper first, stirring the salsa, letting it sit for a few minutes and tasting for heat. See if the temperature is what you ex-pect and what you prefer. It’s easier to adjust the mix of peppers in the salsa to gradually make it a little hotter by adding more peppers than it is to deal with an exces-sively hot and spicy salsa after it’s prepared. If some-one finds your salsa a bit too hot, you might try serving it with some sour cream or salty chips to help calm that spicy flavor.

You may want to “invite” this easy slow-cooker dish to your family potluck. It just could become the hit of the meal and the start of a new family favorite.
2 cups cooked rice
2 1/2 cups frozen cut cauliflower, thawed
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 (4-ounce) jar sliced mushrooms, drained
1 (10 3/4-ounce) can reduced-fat cream of mush-room soup
1/3 cup no-fat sour cream
1/3 cup water
1 cup frozen peas, thawed
1 1/2 cups shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese
Spray a slow cooker container with butter-flavored 1. cooking spray. In prepared container, combine rice, cauliflower, onion and mushrooms. Stir in mushroom soup, sour cream and water. Add peas and Cheddar cheese. Mix well to combine.
Cover and cook on LOW for 4 to 6 hours. Mix well 2. before serving. Makes 8 (1 cup) servings.

Salsa is a healthy, versatile condiment. Adding fruit to this traditional salsa recipe gives it a boost of addition-al healthy nutrients.
1 large, firm-but-ripe mango, peeled and cubed
1 large, firm-but-ripe peach, peeled and cubed
2 large, firm-but-ripe tomatoes, cored, seeded and coarsely chopped; or 16 grape or cherry tomatoes, cut into quarters
1 cup diced red onion
1 or 2 fresh jalapeños, stemmed and minced
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon honey or agave syrup, optional
1/3 cup finely chopped cilantro
In a large bowl, combine mango, peach, tomatoes, 1. onion, jalapeños, lime juice, chili powder, salt and honey. Stir well to combine.Cover and refrigerate for up to 1 hour, to blend 2. the flavors. Just before serving, stir in the cilantro and adjust the seasoning. Serve with baked torti-lla or pita chips. Makes about 2 cups.
TIP: To reduce the heat of the peppers and retain the flavor, cut the peppers open and remove the seeds and the ribs. Be sure to wear gloves when handling peppers or wash your hands immediately after touching them.

Plants For ArrangingFor those who enjoy bringing in plant materials to arrange, the big-
gest challenge is restraint. So many plants – so little space, or time, or help. A beautiful landscape design may not include all the plants you would like to have for flower arranging. All the plants you want for arranging could end up a mish-mash of one of everything. I leave the resolution of this dilemma to the landscape design experts.
There are some particular plants that are especially and often useful in floral designs.
Trees that have wonderful lines, flowers, and / or leaves are: mag-nolia grandiflora, winged elm, flowering crab apple, willow, dogwood, purple plum, Japanese maple, deodar cedar, blue spruce, cedar, pine, sweet gum, and Harry Lauder’s Walking Stick.
Shrubs that are excellent are: boxwood, leucothoe, elaeagnus, yew, juniper, nandina, gardenia, camellia, trifoliate orange, hollies, pyra-cantha, osmanthus, aucuba, ruscus, sasanqua, Anise, hydrangeas, for-sythia, spiraea, roses, variegated pittosporum, edgeworthia, rhodo-dendron, azaleas, clethra, barberries, mahonia, viburnum, mountain laurel, andromeda, photinia, weigela, and cotoneaster. Many of these shrubs are also available in variegated forms and in slightly differing varieties.
There are a number of good ground covers that add much to ar-rangements. Among them are: ivy, ajuga, pachysandra, liriope, vinca major and vinca minor variegata.
Other good and useful plants to include in floral designs are: bam-boo, chrysanthemums, rosemary, garlic, lamb’s ears, fatsia, yucca, iris (blooms an foliage), aspidistra, various grasses such as miscanthus, pampas, or arundo donax variegata, ferns, hostas, sedum, hellebore, peony.
Vines to add to designs are wisteria, carolina jasmine, confederate jasmine, crossvine, trumpet vine, and clematis.
Berries to include could be holly, pyracantha, callicarpa, nandina, mahonia, viburnum, rose hips.
Nuts, fruits, and vegetables create exciting deigns.

Did you know that June is a per-fect time of year to take cuttings from mature shrubs and trees to propagate new ones? You can learn ‘how- to’ at the Coweta County Master Gardeners’ workshop.
The workshop will be held on June 11 from 9:00am - 11:00am at the Cowe-ta County Extension Greenhouse (located beside the Horse Arena at the Coweta County Fairgrounds). A workshop fee of $15.00 includes instruction by experienced Master Gardeners, all plant materials and supplies, and 12 newly propagated plants to take home. Master Gardeners will also provide one month of aftercare for the plants at the Greenhouse as an option.

Sure enough, my car overheated. Scolding myself for not listening to my father’s instructions, I looked at the engine and saw how well he knew me. The oil cap was labeled Dr Pepper, the transmission stick, Coke, and the empty coolant container, Diet Pep-si. I finished the trip safely.

What a Card! Father’s Day was near when I brought my three-year-old son, Tyler, to the card store. Inside, I showed him the cards for dads and told him to pick one.
When I looked back, Tyler was picking up one card after another, opening them up and quickly shoving them back into slots, every which way. “Tyler, what are you doing?” I asked. “Haven’t you found a nice card for Daddy yet?”

“Kirsten, I’ve been waiting for this ever since you were a little girl,” Dad replied. “Now it’s my turn to sit back here and kick the seat.”

What’s In Your Garage?Meet Allyn Bell
… and his passion for old FordsBack in the days of the “big three” auto makers, boys who liked
cars and trucks had to “choose sides”. You either chose Gen-eral Motors (Chevy or Pontiac), Fords (includings Mercury) or Chrysler products which would probably include Dodge and Plymouth. These choices would sometimes be passed from fa-ther to son and may last a lifetime. Allyn Bell’s dad was a “Ford guy” and must have passed that gene on to his son. Allyn not only likes old Fords, but has a passion for the 1940 model.
“I always hoped to own a 1940 Ford”, says Allyn, “and in 1957, my dream came true when I purchased a two-door sedan from a man in Senoia”. He’s the third owner, and the car looks like it could be sitting in an automobile showroom. It’s beautiful!
Car “Buffs”, being a different breed, are never satisfied with just one “Toy”, so in the late 90’s, Allyn and his wife Brenda be-gan traveling around the country looking for another 40 Ford - this time a coupe. Located in Norfold, Va, they found what seemed to be the car they wanted, a 1940 “Deluxe Coupe” in a beautiful maroon color. Brenda purchased this car as a “gift for her husband”, and they brought it home. (Are you wives listening carefully?) Inasmuch as no self-respecting “Ford Man” can own only two old cars, they continued in search of just “one more”. After “debating” about the price for about a month, Allyn purchased a beautiful green 1940 pick-up truck he found in London, Kentucky. “It’s a favorite of my grand children”, he says. “They really like riding in the back”. ( I think it’s my favorite, too!)
You would think he would hard-ly have time for anything else but maintaining these cars, but Allyn seems to have unlimited energy and a contageous “Zest for Life”. He’s an avid gardener and enjoys sharing his home grown veggies with friends and neighbors. He has served on the Moreland coun-cil several times and was Mayor in 2000.
As this article is being written, Allen and some friends are par-
ticipating in the Bicycle Ride across Georgia (BRAG), this time from Atlanta to Savannah. Four hundred miles on a bike may just be a “walk in the park” for Allyn. In 2000, he and his friend, the late Bob Lore, “peddled” from California to Georgia! (Makes me want to sit down just think-ing about it.) Also, Brenda and Allyn enjoy traveling and have made over 20 trips to Europe and about ten to Hawaii.
Having made a career in the Coweta education system, “Mr. Bell” has been a teacher, guidance counselor, Pupil Services Director and principal. He and Brenda have lived in Moreland for 45 years and have been a asset to Coweta County through church and community service.
Allyn Bell - educator, adventurer, car guy, traveler, community leader. But he’s also a good husband and father and a friend to many.
