We sometimes hear the term “work ethic” as it applies to the way a person performs his or her job - good or bad. The

older generation complains it no longer exists, business owners prize it in their employees, caring parents hope to instill it in their children, and “lay-abouts” don’t even know what it is. So what really is the meaning of this phrase, anyway? I would like to describe it as a “willingness to step forward and do what needs to be done, even when no one is looking”. It becomes a habit.

Over the years I have developed a desire to have a good work ethic, although I certainly didn’t start out that way. Like everything else in my life, it had to come the hard way. At age twelve, I had a paper route, delivering about a hundred papers each day after school. If I accidentally missed even one house, that customer would report the offense to the newspaper office. I was then made to ped-dle all the way back to that neighborhood to deliver the missing paper. (Sometimes a dog would run off with it, but I was still held responsible!) At that point in my life I didn’t realize those situations were building my work ethic. A few years later, when working at our family run business, the Tastee Freez, I left a sandwich out of a good customers “to go” bag. When he got home and reported the missing burger, I was made to deliver it to his home, several miles away. (At least I had finally graduated from a bicycle to a car!) It wasn’t that I wanted to do it, but there was no other alter-native if I was to keep my job. I didn’t understand it then, however, these experiences were adding to the building blocks of my character - my work ethic.

By the time I became a business owner, the work ethic was becoming a habit, something I wanted to do. One profound example, which I will always remember, involved a home my company constructed on Pinson street for Miss Willie Boyd, a retired school teacher. It was Christmas eve and I was at home with my wife and our two young daughters when Miss Boyd called me crying. A pipe had burst, flooding her kitchen with about two inches of water, and, at her age and living alone, she was helpless. I guess that work ethic, which had been developing in me over the years, “kicked in”. I drove to her home with towels and bucket, cleaned up the mess, and got home about the time my daughters were going to bed. This willingness to “do the right thing” had now become a part of my character. By the way, a good work ethic will not necessarily make you succeed in business, but it can certainly, in part, make up for some mistakes.

Every day I connect with people in our community involved with the commerce of products and services. Although there are always some exceptions, I believe the majority of this present generation does have the desire to do a good job. I see it everywhere. These people are trying to develop a good work ethic, whether for their own business or for their employer. And yes, “even when no one is looking”!

P.S.: Here’s what my high school teachers used to say about my work ethic. “He is a “model student” - a model of what not to do”! Perhaps I was a “late bloomer”.

As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.

“He is a “model student” - a model of what not to do”!

Local Family In Need~ Fund Established For Family of Burn Victims

Two Meriwether County residents, Jennifer Weaver and Billy Reddock, remain at Grady Memorial Hospi-tal’s burn unit following a grease fire at their Greenville home. Jennifer has third degree burns over 95 percent of her body, according to her sister Connie Thompson. Billy Reddock reportedly suffered burns over 25-30 percent of his body.

Thompson, with the help of her friend Shannon Mc-Daniel, has started a fund in Weaver’s name to help with medical expenses and to provide for her three children, who are 5, 7 and 12 years old. According to Thompson, Weaver owned her own business and was the sole source of income for her family. Donations are being accepted at United Bank in Newnan, located at 61 Bullsboro Drive. Donations can be made in person at the counter, in the night drop or by mail. An account has been opened in the name, “Connie Thompson for the benefit of Jennifer Weaver.” All proceeds will ben-efit Weaver or her immediate family.

A website has been designed to allow you to follow their progress and to make donations.www.a-sisterslove.blogspot.com

The Frigid Frog of Georgia is in Sharpsburg …

Being from Texas, getting a shaved ice snow cone was a treat that our family enjoyed often. Since we ar-rived in Coweta county in 2008, we have been unable to find that affordable sweet treat that we loved so much. We decided that the great folks of Coweta county de-served to experience that same delicious treat in the hot summer months. We offer 36 flavors and several “fun” flavors such as Barbie, Cactus Juice, Cinderella, Shrek, and Nemo.

We look forward to meeting everyone and putting smiles on the faces of children and adults when they taste the fluffy goodness of a shaved ice snow cone. We are located in Sharpsburg just North of the light at Hwy 54/154 (beside the BP gas station). Look for the red trailer with the colorful frog and snow cone decals. Hours are daily 2 to 8.

What’s In Your Garage?Meet Allyn Bell

… and his passion for old FordsBack in the days of the “big three” auto makers, boys who liked

cars and trucks had to “choose sides”. You either chose Gen-eral Motors (Chevy or Pontiac), Fords (includings Mercury) or Chrysler products which would probably include Dodge and Plymouth. These choices would sometimes be passed from fa-ther to son and may last a lifetime. Allyn Bell’s dad was a “Ford guy” and must have passed that gene on to his son. Allyn not only likes old Fords, but has a passion for the 1940 model.

“I always hoped to own a 1940 Ford”, says Allyn, “and in 1957, my dream came true when I purchased a two-door sedan from a man in Senoia”. He’s the third owner, and the car looks like it could be sitting in an automobile showroom. It’s beautiful!

Car “Buffs”, being a different breed, are never satisfied with just one “Toy”, so in the late 90’s, Allyn and his wife Brenda began traveling around the country looking for another 40 Ford - this time a coupe. Located in Norfold, Va, they found what seemed to be the car they wanted, a 1940 “Deluxe Coupe” in a beautiful maroon color. Brenda purchased this car as a “gift for her husband”, and they brought it home. (Are you wives listening carefully?) Inasmuch as no self-respecting “Ford Man” can own only two old cars, they continued in search of just “one more”. After “debating” about the price for about a month, Allyn purchased a beautiful green 1940 pick-up truck he found in London, Kentucky. “It’s a favorite of my grand children”, he says. “They really like riding in the back”. ( I think it’s my favorite, too!)

You would think he would hard-ly have time for anything else but maintaining these cars, but Allyn seems to have unlimited energy and a contageous “Zest for Life”. He’s an avid gardener and enjoys sharing his home grown veggies with friends and neighbors. He has served on the Moreland coun-cil several times and was Mayor in 2000.

As this article is being written, Allen and some friends are par-

ticipating in the Bicycle Ride across Georgia (BRAG), this time from Atlanta to Savannah. Four hundred miles on a bike may just be a “walk in the park” for Allyn. In 2000, he and his friend, the late Bob Lore, “peddled” from California to Georgia! (Makes me want to sit down just think-ing about it.) Also, Brenda and Allyn enjoy traveling and have made over 20 trips to Europe and about ten to Hawaii.

Having made a career in the Coweta education system, “Mr. Bell” has been a teacher, guidance counselor, Pupil Services Director and principal. He and Brenda have lived in Moreland for 45 years and have been a asset to Coweta County through church and community service.

Allyn Bell - educator, adventurer, car guy, traveler, community leader. But he’s also a good husband and father and a friend to many.

Carla Cook Smith offers her 7th book, “Perspec-tives”, as a fundraiser to the Senoia Area Historical Society (SAHS) ~ until June 30 a portion of the sales of the book will go to the historical society. The 3rd in a series about life in Senoia, Smith’s book features lo-cal history, human interest stories and lots of laughs. Smith’s most recent book highlights Starr’s Mill and its community as well as Morgan’s Mill, the life of Bill Tinsley, whose grandfather “Doc” Tinsley is legend-

ary as “The Character of Senoia.” Farmers Ronnie and Susan Whatley, Pas-chal Company employee and longtime Senoia resi-dent Martha Gill Clark, prankster James Bar-nette, and Senoia’s good ole boy Bobby Hatchett are also featured. Mary Ann Reese, Beverly Hicks and Martha Gill Clark tell tales from horse and bug-gy days. The accomplish-ments of Senoia’s female mayors are noted. Senoia residents share culinary secrets via recipes that are interspersed throughout the 150 page book along with vintage photos from Senoia’s rich history.

The author notes, “Al-though my previous books have been around 100 pages, I had to in-crease the page length to 150 pages for this fi-nal book about Senoia which has a wealth of history in its treasure trove of heartwarming and laugh-out-loud sto-ries from small town life. Cover girls on the front of Historical Perspectives in Senoia have worked faithfully to protect Se-noia’s history for many years. Janet Baggarly has operated the Senoia Buggy Shop Museum in Senoia since her husband Walter passed away. The buggy shop museum was the only museum in town until the Senoia Area His-torical Society opened a museum in their meeting house on Couch Street a few months ago. Nan-cy Roy and Joanne Utt worked diligently to en-sure that the Senoia his-toric district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Re-tired school teacher Mary Ann Reese was a voice coach for ‘A Christmas Memory’ and gave tips to actors based on her recollections of Senoia’s history. Totsie McKnight

worked to help grow the Senoia Library and shares stories from her childhood at Lake Raymond for the book. Martha Gill Clark wrote the history of Senoia Baptist Church where she was a member for over 50 years.”

The book details the life of beloved school teacher Coral Moses Hand, depicts residents on bicycles when they were “one size fits all,” shares the portrait of Starr’s Mill owner Allen Jones as well as publisher of Senoia’s

newspaper, The Enterprise Gazette and describes life with photos of Atlanta Cracker and New York Yankee professional ballplayer Marvin Duke of Senoia.

Books are $15.00 each and benefit the SAHS through June 30th and are available at Scott’s Book Store in Newnan, Gail’s Antiques and The Welcome Center in Senoia, outlying independent bookstores and addition-al places of business in Senoia.

Can I Afford To

Professionally Stage My Property?

The question should be: Can You Afford Not To Stage?

Let’s talk about the home buyer of today.

Studies show that there are more first time home buyers under • the age of 30 and more baby boomers than any other time in history. Let’s face it, they are the ones that have the jobs and income to qualify for the mortgage.

According to the Maritz survey, 63% of buyers are willing to • pay MORE for move- in ready properties. They want to move in right away and begin entertaining immediately. They are fam-ily oriented, smart, shop around for the best deals, want more value for their investment and are willing to wait for that value.

Over 92% of buyers research online before they contact a real • estate professional. They start making their list of “must see” houses from the photos they see online. Photos of profession-ally staged listings look better online and are key to driving the buyer traffic to that listing.

A prospective buyer will view a property that has been profes-• sionally prepared and showcased as “well maintained”.

A buyer’s agent will recognize that a staged listing is • “move-in” ready and are more inclined to show that property.

Professionally prepared and showcased listings STAND OUT in • a prospective buyers mind.

RESA (Real Estate Staging Association) released an annual report in Feb-ruary of 2010 and the results showed that 126 vacant and occupied homes that had not been staged prior to going on the market, stayed on the market, on average for 263 days.

Those same frustrated home sellers had their properties professionally staged and were sold on average within 60 days.

That’s 9 months versus 2 months! WOW!

If you are a seller and you’re wondering if you can afford to stage or not ... use that formula to determine how much money you will continue to spend while your house is on the market, un-staged!

For more information on facts and statistics about staging a property to sell, contact

Southtowne General Motors Superstore and ChevyGive Away a Car for Exceptional Attendance

“Thank you so much Chevrolet and Southtowne of Newnan, GA!!! I am shocked and amazed and cannot wait to get my new 2011 Cruze!!!” These are the words that Kegan Isaac, winner of a 2011 Chevy Cruze, posted on the “Chevy Drive for Perfec-tion” Facebook fanpage. It doesn’t take very much imagination to understand what young Kegan from The Heritage School is feeling after winning a new Chevrolet Cruze from the Southtowne General Motors Superstore in Newnan. However, it’s Kegan who should be thanking himself for his dedication towards achieving a very difficult goal.

The Chevy Drive for Perfection is a program developed by Chevrolet and funded by local Chevrolet Dealerships which rewards high school seniors at the partici-pating schools who achieve a 98% attendance or better in their senior year. Prizes included Wiis, flat screen TVs, iPods and gift certificates … and, of course, a 2011 Chevy Cruze for one lucky winner.

In addition to the prizes, Southtowne General Motors Superstore and other local dealers raised and donated over $35,000 in cash to local area high schools. $7,500 went to 4 Coweta High Schools who snared over 20% of the money out of the 60 High Schools participating in the program. This extra money will go a long way in procuring additional textbooks, supplies and equipment for the schools.

However, this was more than just free gifts and prizes for these dedicated young adults. Don’t think for a moment that any of the participants involved took the event for granted. Sure they had the chance to walk away with some really great prizes and prize money, but the true meaning of the event was clearly not lost on one winner who also posted to the “Chevy Drive for Perfection” fan page saying: “Chevy Drive for Perfection isn’t about giving away cars and fancy prizes, it’s about helping

kids achieve their future goals by keeping them in school and helping them strive

for high attendance. Chevy, thank you again for what you are doing for educa-

tion and the futures of children all across America. This program has truly been a

blessing and impacted my life in ways you could never imagine!”

NOTICE: ROAD CLOSURES• Martin Mill Road will be closed beginning June 15, 2011 through mid August for a culvert replacement project. The detour route will be US 27, Bexton Road, SR 54, Moore Road and Gordon Road. Our hope is to have the project complete and the road open by the beginning of school on August 8, 2011. • Luther Bailey Road will be closed through early November 2011 for demolition and removal of the existing bridge and the construction of a new bridge over Double Branch Creek. The traveling public will be detoured along Luther Bailey Road, Gor-don Road, Eastside School Road and Old Highway 85.• The bridge replacement on Moore Road over White Oak Creek Tribu-tary requires that the road be closed for removal and replacement of the bridge. The road will be reopened by August 7, 2011. Gregory Bridge Company is complet-ing this project and it is funded through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST.) The recommended detour is Gordon Road to Martin Mill Road to Scoggin Road.

More Cat Condos for CowetaMore cat condos are coming to Coweta County Ani-

mal Control. Thanks to the generosity of the Holland Ware Charitable Foundation another set of cat condos will be added to the facility at Selt Road.

Cat condos sound a little luxurious, but they are more functional than fluff. The condos allow the cats to be separated with walls instead of open wire and to have individual ventilation of their cages (condos.) This significantly reduces the transmission of disease in the cat population at Animal Control.

The Holland Ware Charitable Foundation has do-nated more than $140,000 to Coweta County Animal Control in the last year for various projects, including cat condos and the construction of a new intake facil-ity, which is in the planning phase now.

They have probably mea-sured and recorded at least 80 percent of the land boundaries around here. And anything they may have missed was certainly surveyed by their grand-father, Mr. T.Y. Mattox, many years before they came along in the business.

Diane Christopher has had a love of animals all her life, but not just dogs. She and John have trav-eled around the country competing in Cutting horse competition for several years. They now live on the family farm near Sharpsburg which has been in the Christopher family since the civil War. Their ad-

dress is, of course, Christopher Rd.

Diane decided there may be an opportunity to make a business of her love for dogs and still stay near home. In early 2010, she and John converted a barn on their prop-erty into an overnight boarding home for dogs, and on Labor Day 2010, The Dog Barn was open for business! A few weeks ago, I visit-ed their business to get information about an article I wanted to pub-lish, which I thought would be of interest to our readers. I was im-pressed, to say the least. Both the “overnight guest” areas and the office area were absolutely clean, fresh and bright. Each dog has its own locker to hold special food, toys, needed medications and other items. There are eighteen 5x18 indoor/outdoor type “suites” connected to full size outdoor enclosures. There is also central heat-ing and A/C which is a must for any “Discriminating Canine”. Dogs are housed separately, unless they are from the same home.

Diane is especially proud of their good facility and the extra care they offer. “John and I live just a few hundred feet away”, says Diane, “allowing us to provide a safe, loving and caring atmosphere 24 hours a day”.

So, if you are looking for a first class, family owned and operated boarding facility for your dog, visit John and Diane Christopher at The Dog Barn. Their “guest” really love them, and I think you will, too.

Drying PlantsMost of us who love gardening would say that there is no good

substitute for fresh plants and flowers. However, the time, work and cost of fresh flower arrangements can be burdensome. Long lasting dried arrangements can be the perfect solution. Growers can profit from the need of busy people to have more long lasting decorations for their homes. Seasonal changes offer variety as well as special holiday themes.

There are a number of methods of drying flowers and foliages, pods, cones and seed heads and branches. Air drying, water drying, sand, borax, cat liter, silica gel, alum, glycerine, or using a microwave or pressing can be used for different types of plant materials.

Air drying is done by hanging small branches of plants upside down until thoroughly dried. A dark, warm, dry place, free of humidity, with good air circulation is needed ~ such as an attic, closet, basement, barn, loft or garage. Pick the plants on a dry day around mid-day. One method is to attach bunches to coat hangers with rubber bands. Drying should take one to two weeks. Store dried materi-als in a dry, dark place.

Some plants good for air drying are: Baby’s Breath, Bells of Ireland, Cockscomb, Hydrangea, Larkspur, Statice, Blue Salvia, Strawflower, Tansy, Yarrow, Pampas Grass Plumes, Wheat, Cat Tails, Dock, Chi-nese Lantern, Honesty, Mullein, Peony, Goldenrod. Leaves such as “Silver King” Artemisia, Aspidistra, magnolia or iris foliage dry well. Okra pods, bean pods, garlic heads, lavendar, rosemary, lotus pods, sweetgum balls, wisteria pods, trumpet vine seed pods, cottonwood tree bolls, and nandina berries or china tree berries all dry easily. Pine cones and corn husks are excellent to dry this way as is sumac and Queen Anne’s lace. Some of these plant materials benefit from a spray of lacquer, hair spray, or commercial plant sealers to help preserve them longer.

Corn husks can be made into various types of flower forms. Pine cones can be cut in half to make rosette forms. Small magnolia leaves can be combined with a cone to form ‘flowers’. Artichokes can be dried and used as flower forms. Dried materials may be left natural; brushed with pastels and sealed; spray painted; or dyed with fabric dyes to achieve a softer appearance.

Dried plant materials can be com-bined in arrangements using sahara (similar to oasis) or chicken wire to hold in position. They can be used to make seasonal wreaths or wreaths and swags of herbs for the kitchen. Topiar-ies may be made using a container of choice (with plaster of paris) to hold a branch topped by a styrofoam or chick-en wire ball.
