The “Tastee Freez”! Do you remember it? It was the summer
of 1964. I was about to turn 16 and would start the eleventh
grade that fall. My family had just purchased a little ham-
burger/ ice cream place on Greenville street, just south of the
square at the location now used as a city park. With a humble
start, it turned out to be one of the most popular eating places
in our community. A combination of great tasting food at low
prices, combined with friendly service, made it so.
The little place, which would seat about 40, was either a de-
lightful experience or a dreadful chore, depending on which
side of the counter you were on. I was the oldest of five and
the ones who could work, did work. In fact, we worked so hard, I’m getting tired
just writing about it! After proving myself, I made fifty cents per hour working after
school and on weekends, but the summer after my first year in collage, I was raised
to a dollar! My brother, Hal “Spud” Williams, who was a few years behind me, served
his time, too, as did my sisters.
We made a living, although I don’t know how. We served a good tasting hamburg-
er, fries and a coke starting at only forty nine cents! Some of our wealthier patrons
opted for the “Deluxe” burger meal or our popular hamburger steak at $1.19. And,
they kept coming back. We treated our regular customers like family and they loved
it. We would occasionally be so busy we would ask the “seasoned” customers to help
serve the others when they finished their meal. I would sometimes be “let out for
good behavior” on a weekend night and would go out on a date. The girl would want
go to the Tastee Freez to join our friends, but upon arrival, I would be called into
action once again if they were busy. I soon learned to avoid that place at every op-
portunity.
Many of our customers would come in most every day
– if just to have a cup of coffee and chat. David Boyd
was just across the street at the old Chamber building
and stopped in regularly. Mr. Jim Beavers was one of
my favorites as he would come in each day for a burg-
er and coffee. He always wore a suit and tie and drove
a new black Cadillac. I liked hearing his colorful and
adventurous stories and looked forward to seeing him
each time. Tommy Glover lived close and came in a least
three times a day for coffee. Tommy was like family, too.
You might say the Tastee Freez was one of the last “Greasy Spoons” – the true
“Hamburger Joint”. My parents are deceased and my sisters have relocated. It’s just
me and Spud now, and we often laugh about old times there and how hard we all
worked. We also built friendships that have lasted us a life-
time (so far). Never a week passes that someone reminds me
of that old restaurant and how much they enjoyed it. That
experience taught me that friendly service and genuine con-
cern for your customers can go a long way in running a suc-
cessful business.
As always, I invite your comments and suggestions to help
us make The Coweta Shopper an interesting and effective advertising medium.
PS: By the way, I’m now making a little more than a dollar an hour. (Some
weeks!)

Is A Toenail Fungus Infectionpreventing you
from wearing sandals?Toenail fungus infection (“onychomycosis”) is an extremely common infection of the nails by fungus. The infection is stubborn, difficult to treat, and re-sults in unsightly and often painful toenails. Treat-ments are often slow, time-consuming, and far from 100% effective.
If you have this difficult to treat condition and are be-tween the ages of 18-70 you may be eligible to par-ticipate in a research study conducted by Dr. Mark Ling, testing a topical investigational medication for the treatment of toenail fungus infection. All study visits and study medication are provided at no cost to you and qualified participants may be eligible for compensation for time and travel. Now that annuals and perenni-
als have finished for the year, it’s
time to think of container garden-
ing. Whether you are gardening
in a very small place or in a larger
area, the use of containers can add
interest, color and variety. Many
vines, annuals, perennials, shrubs
and even trees can be grown in
containers.
There are several important
choices to consider when planning
a container garden. Compatibility
of the plants’ needs such as: water, amount of light, fertilizer needs,
drainage, type of soil, and mature size must be considered. Choosing
pots that will be suitable to not only the plants but also to the site is
important to achieving a successful plan. Color, texture, proportion,
scale and harmony will each influence your choices. All of these help
to establish a theme, interpret a mood, and echo the sites architectural
elements. Multiple pots of similar type in varying heights placed to-
gether give a pleasing effect.
Will you choose warm or cool or contrasting colors? Should the pot
be wooden, stone, clay or fiberglass? Are the pots the best shapes and
sizes for the site and for the plants? Generally, plants should be no
more than two times the height of the pot and not more than one and
one half the width of the pot. Vary the heights of plants in a pot to
add interest. An often used formula is tall, round, and trailing plants
together. Delicate and small plants are good when viewed up close.
Bold or large leaves, flowers, and plant sizes look best at a distance
or in a larger area. Repetition - of color, pot styles, shapes, etc. - aids
in achieving harmony and rhythm. The principles of design: balance,
dominance, contrast, rhythm, proportion and scale are used to create
beauty, harmony and distinction just as they would be in a floral de-
sign.
Some plants for winter containers might be: viburnums, leucothoe,
boxwood, euonymus, juniper, camellia, sasanqua, pyracantha, osman-
thus, eleagnus, yucca, Autumn fern, English ivy, cabbage, kale, pan-
sies, or Lamb’s ears or bulbs.
Choose protected locations for winter containers because they are
more exposed to the winter elements. Remember to water as needed
when it doesn’t rain. Cover temporarily when severe conditions occur.
Don’t leave coverings on the plants in warm sunshine. Be sure to have
good drainage.
It’s great that we can continue to garden on cold, wet winter days!

by Nan Johnston of Southern Staging
& Redesign
“How am I going to get rid of all this stuff?” This is the question that I most often hear when I meet with staging clients and help them prepare their house to be in showing condition. Unless you are a minimalist, and most of us are not, we accumulate furniture, accessories, grandma’s old antique clock, and children’s out grown items. You name it, I’ve seen it in someone’s, garage, closet or basement.
We hate to get rid of these possessions, but we don’t use them any longer, and you hate to just throw them out. A yard sale is not an op-tion due to time, energy or enthusiasm and you really hate to donate some thing’s, when you know that you may be able to sell these things and put a little bit of “green” in your pocket.
One solution to this particular problem is to contact a consignment shop. Located in Historical Newnan, GA, next to Scott’s Bookstore, you will find one of the most charming shops on the square. Owner Janet Elliott Cantrell will make it easy and take the drudgery out of selling your unneeded items in her shop, Encore Decor.
I sat down with Janet to ask her a few questions about how all of this works;
Who is your buyer or seller? My seller is someone needing to down-size or either they are remodeling or moving. The buyers are usually new home buyers, newlyweds, anyone furnishing 2nd homes at the beach, lake or mountains.
What are your best selling items? The best selling items, without question are the accessories and home decor. We sell a great many items as gifts for birthdays and weddings. Furniture usually involves return visits for measurements, etc. We offer gift registry for brides and also keep individual gift cards for our regular customer to include in the gift.
“How am I going to get rid of all this stuff?”Where do you find your merchandise? 90% of our merchandise
comes from consignors. I can either go see what they want to sell or they bring items to me at the shop. The shop was full when we first opened with consigner items. People would stop in when they were walking buy and ask what we were doing and they started bringing their treasures in for us to sell.
How does it work? commissions? etc. If someone has enough to warrant a personal visit to their home, I’ll go and choose the higher quality items or they can bring things to the shop. It’s helpful if the seller knows how much they want to net off of a piece. If I think that I can bring it back and sell it, we offer a 50/50 split between us and the consigner.
Give us a good example of comparing consignment shop purchases to regular retail. With consignment shop purchase you’ll find unique items not found at retail stores, or the prices will be greatly reduced from anywhere to 1/3 to 1/2 of retail. And with consignment shop items, there’s always a story behind every piece. In Newnan, people will make purchase on items just because it used to belong to someone special that they knew in the community.
How is this different than say, a flea market or yard sale? The main difference is the setting of the store, the way everything is displayed in an appealing manner, we’re located in Historic Downtown Newnan and a lot of my customers are walking around our beautiful town and stop in to see us … I wouldn’t get near the traffic if I were on Bullsboro or a busy road somewhere.
What are you looking for when you take on a consignment piece? Unique items that can either be updated with a fresh coat of paint or stain, one-of-a- kind pieces that you won’t find in retail stores. We also have great local artist work in the shop. We are the exclusive shop in Newnan that offer one artist unique pencil renderings of Historical Newnan or Atlanta landmarks.
So the next time you either want to unload unwanted furniture or find that special piece at a fraction of what something would cost new, go see Janet at Encore Decor.
To see how you can furnish an entire room using consignment fur-niture and accessories, be sure to visit the:

Newnan Community Theatre Company is proud to present Dog Sees God:
Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead by Bert V. Royal.
When CB’s dog dies, CB begins to question the existence of an afterlife. His friends are not very helpful. His best friend is too burnt out to provide any coherent speculation. His ex-girlfriend has recently been institutional-ized. His formerly dirty friend is a violent and angry thug. His younger sister is trying to find an identity. A chance meeting with a pianist from his past offers CB a chance to change. Dog Sees God pushes the limits while pre-senting a harsh look at teen topics such as sex, drug use, suicide, eating disorders, peer vio-lence, rebellion, and gay identity issues. This show is recommended for mature audiences.
Dog Sees God features the talents of Levi Gen-try, Justin Thompson, Embree Battles, Lori Jacobs, Mandy Mitchell, Samantha Johnson, Ryan Bermingham and Drew Murray. Paul Conroy, NCTC’s Artistic Director, directs.
Performances run November 11 through 21, with performances Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 2:30. Tick-ets range in price from $8 to $12.
Tickets for either show can be reserved at http://www.facebook.com/l/f7e3e8ofYX-WRnq8LFlZixulkM0g; www.newnantheatre.org or by calling 770-683-6282.
NCTC is located at 24 1st Avenue, Newnan, GA 30263.

Bob Spruck, a 32 year resident of Sharpsburg, has been a British sports car enthusiast since the ‘60s. Most of the grunts in Vietnam dreamed of buying their dream car upon their re-turn to the world. Bob did, too, except rather than dreaming of the muscle cars that were so popular at the time, like Mustangs, Camaros, and GTOs, he dreamed of Austin Healey Sprites and MGs. When he did safely return, he bought a used Sunbeam Alpine. He followed that with a few Bugeye Sprites and MG Midgets. To experience the unique and sporty characteristics of British sports cars, he participated in autocrosses and gymknanas at local airports and shopping center parking lots.
Career, grad school, his first house, two children, and a move to Georgia all contributed to a twenty year hiatus during which he had no sports car but still retained his interest and enthusiasm. In 1989, while at a vintage sports car race at Road Atlanta, near Gainesville, GA and hearing the names and home towns of the entrants in the next race announced on the PA system, he heard the name of a racer from Newnan. He found him in the paddock later, introduced himself and explained his latent desire to get re-involved with sports cars and racing. His enthusiasm got him an invitation to the guy’s home shop to see his race car close up and then a request to be his crewman, supporting him at races and working on the car between races. Bob even bought a tired 1972 MG Midget that he restored to use on the street and to exhibit in car shows. After a while, he thought he’d like to build a race car for himself, so he and his race partner built one from an abandoned restoration project. Bob has vintage raced that 1967 Midget since 1991 and has almost 50 races on it.
Vintage racing is defined as road racing a sports car or sedan manu-factured before about 1974. There are about thirty organizations all over the country that sponsor races. Cars can be prepared only as they would have been able to be prepared in their year of manufacture and raced according-ly. Bob has raced his car two to four times a year at such tracks as Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen (NY), Virginia International Raceway, Barber Mo-torsports Park in Birmingham, Roe-bling Road Raceway near Savannah, Carolina Motorsports Park, and even
the old road course layout at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
So, Bob’s garage contains the 1972 MG Midget (currently undergoing an engine rebuild) and the 1967 MG Midget vintage race car. He also has six parts cars hidden away in his woods and other places in the county.

FunnyBone
Giving ThanksA man in Phoenix calls
his son in New York the day before Thanksgiving
and says,“I hate to ruin your day,
but I have to tell you that your mother and I
are divorcing; forty-five years of misery
is enough.”
“Pop, what are you talking about?” the son screams.
“We can’t stand the sight of each other any longer,” the father says. “We’re sick of each other, and I’m sick of talking about this,
so you call your sister in Chicago and tell her.”
Frantic, the son calls his sister, who explodes on the phone. “Like heck they’re getting divorced,” she shouts, “I’ll take care of this.”
She calls Phoenix immediately, and screams at her father, “You are NOT getting divorced. Don’t do a single thing until I get there.
I’m calling my brother back, and we’ll both be there tomorrow. Until then, don’t do a thing, DO YOU HEAR ME?” and hangs up.
The old man hangs up his phone and turns to his wife. “Okay,” he says, “they’re coming for Thanksgiving and paying their own way.”
