Iwas recently invited to a groundbreaking ceremony. We would not be there to celebrate the opening of a multi-million dollar factory, a new government building or a program to re-distribute

the taxpayer’s money. We were, in fact, there to give a “hand up” to a local family who needed a place to live – a place to call “our home”. The Newnan-Coweta Habitat for Humanity, with the help and sup-port of Newnan Presbyterian, Central Baptist and St Paul’s Episcopal churches, will make the dream of home ownership come true for this woman and her children. And it will happen as a result of a lot of volunteer labor, donated materials and the hearts and minds of a caring community.

Newnan-Coweta Habitat, founded in 1994, has constructed more than 70 homes in our community through tax-deductible donations of money and materials. Providing a partner-ship with the future homeowner, Habitat pro-vides a hand up, not a hand out, requiring the family to engage in the building process and repaying the costs with no interest. Seeking to put God’s love into action, Habitat for Hu-manity brings people together to build homes, communities and hope.

I actually volunteered for a couple of days to help build such a home about 12 years ago. Even though I owned a home-building company, I couldn’t drive a nail straight. I could, however, counsel them on advertising, workers compensation requirements, operating costs, financing and customer relations – none of which raised even the smallest amount of interest for this group. So I carried lum-ber and concrete blocks, I swept sawdust and brought water to thirsty workers. But I left the real work and most of the thinking to workers who were much more skilled than I. A few of them had worked for me, but for those two days, I was taking orders from them!

Much of the funding for Habitat comes from the sale of donated items, which are sold by the Habitat’s Re-Store on Pine Road in Newnan. You’ll find great bargains on everything “including” the kitchen sink, as well as furniture, appliances, tools, cabinets, doors and windows, light fixtures and computer monitors and TV’s. They even had some church pews for sale last time I was there last week. Store hours are Wednesday through Saturday – 9 to 5. They accept and appreciate tax-deduct-ible donated items and will make an appointment to pick up larger pieces. You may even decide to become one of the store’s volunteers. They are a great group of folks.

As a Christian ministry, Habitat shares God’s love through their actions, working in partnership with God and His people to help develop Coweta County into a community where simple, decent houses are available to all. And now, as of this latest groundbreaking, one more family, a mother and her children, can finally say, “This is our Home”.

Its that time of year again. The bees are buzzing, the pollen is falling at the 15th of April is looming near! Let me start of by declaring that I am in no way a tax consultant and my advice is to check with your tax professional to verify the following information.

Very often I advise my clients to hang onto their staging invoice in the event that the consultation and other cost could be tax deductible. However, that is not true for all situations.

This is the way that I understand it …

The fees for staging services can be considered advertising cost accord-ing to the IRS guidelines, as long as the home stager has been hired for the sole purpose of preparing your house to sell. The IRS position is that staging costs are legitimate selling expense for both primary and secondary homes and are tax deductible.

If the stager advises you to paint, replace carpet, make repairs … basic maintenance and upkeep, those ex-penses are not deductible. The cost of the stagers’ services in preparing the home to sell are deductible.

www.southern-staging.com • [email protected]

If an owner purchases accessories and items for staging that they are go-ing to take with them once the house sells, those items are not deductible, but if the items are rented or part of the stagers services and included on the stagers invoices, that will be tax deductible as staging expense.

Clear as mud, right? Basically, the best way to know is to check with your tax professional. Be sure to ask, because you definitely won’t be able to deduct staging expenses if you don’t ask, right?

Norma Chapman Haynes of Newnan has just released “Home Is Where My Heart Is,” a compilation of her pop-ular newspaper columns from the past several years. Haynes takes readers back to a time when young people enjoyed Picture Show Parties on the Court Square in Newnan, when homemakers could ring up any downtown grocer and have the day’s food delivered right to their kitchen, and when the Georgia Bulldogs would stop in Newnan on their way down to play Auburn. Th ey will enjoy strolls through the downtown area and revisit many stores of the Newnan of yesteryear. She also writes of childhood aft ernoons spent in her father’s barber shop, the anx-ious times of the World War II years in Newnan and, more recently, of her own passion for honoring local public safety offi cials. Th e book’s cover features artwork by Newnan artist Martin Pate and includes the Coweta County Courthouse, the old sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Chapman’s Barber Shop, the Carnegie Library, the Municipal Building, Lee-King Drug Co. and John-son Hardware. Th e back cover features a drawing of the Central Baptist Church by her husband of more than fi ft y years, J.T. Haynes, Jr. Th e book retails for $20, which includes the sales tax, and copies are available at the Coweta County Convention & Visitors Bureau, 200 Court Square, Newnan; Grannie Fannie’s, 15 Greenville St., Newnan; and Lee-King Pharmacy, 18 Cavender St., Newnan. Copies are also available for order online from amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com.

Combining Experience, Location and

Talent!

Knox and PanoplyHave Merged

By Joe Williams

Two great Newnan business-es have recently joined forces. Mark Knox and Martha Ann Parks recently announced the merger of Knox Company and Panoply Interior Design which will be located at the current Knox building on Greenville St. Both are well established, successful businesses which have come together to com-bine their experience, talent and great customer service in one convenient location. The merger will provide the conve-nience of in-stock furnishings along with a tasteful design el-ement.

Knox Company is a rock solid, family owned business,

which has served our area for 60 years. The store is known for good quality home furnish-ings, great customer care, and fair prices. Panoply Interior Design, established 37 years ago, is well known in our area for creating interesting, taste-ful interiors for your home or business. “I’m excited about this new partnership”, says Mark Knox. “It will enable us to change with the times and tap into the world of interior design to better serve our customers.”

Martha Ann will help with the buying and merchandising, as well as introducing new lines in both furniture and accesso-

ries, such as art, rugs, lamps, etc. “Mark and I will combine the lines we both have carried, from low to high, which will give our customers and clients so many more choices. And I’ll be adding draperies and wall coverings along with, of course, the practice of interior design, in order to expand what is of-fered, giving more diversity to the showroom”, she said.

The Knox-Panoply merger will create a true “One Stop Shop” - the best of what both have to offer under one roof. A winning combination that will now offer their customers and clients much, much more!

Linda Montpetit, RN, a case manager at Piedmont Newnan Hospital, has been named the most recent winner of the presti-gious DAISY Award for Extraor-dinary Nurses. The recognition is part of a national program honoring nurses for their clinical skills and

compassion-ate care for patients and their families. Montp e t i t received the honor for go-ing above and beyond in car-ing for a stroke patient at the hos-pital. She not only helped coordi-

nate his care but she stepped in to become part of his rehabilitation by spending time in the patient’s room and working to improve his coordination. “Linda is a consistent high achiever when it comes to pa-tient care at our hospital. When a co-worker spotted her in the patient’s room, tossing a ball back and forth and encouraging this

patient’s progress, I was not sur-prised,” said Jason Smith, vice president and chief nursing offi-cer at Piedmont Newnan. “Nurses are everyday heroes here at Pied-mont Newnan and the DAISY Award is an important way to let our nurses know their work is highly valued.” Nurses can be nominated for the DAISY Award for Extraordi-

nary Nurses by colleagues, physi-cians, patients and visitors. Hon-orees are selected monthly by a selection committee. DAISY is an acronym for Dis-eases Attacking the Immune System. The DAISY Award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

BETH: Not only as we age – but at any age – there are certain legal documents which you should have in place should you become unable to speak for yourself.

There are 4 documents I recommend.

• A Power of Attorney which gives a designated agent the authority to make legal decisions on your behalf when you are no longer able to do so.

• A Power of Attorney for Healthcare (or Healthcare Proxy) – the same as the above but for healthcare.

• A Living Will or Advanced Directives – states your wishes for medical treatment.

• And a new document – P.O.L.S.T. – Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment.

If you do not have these documents I recommend you contact a lawyer, specifically an Elder Law Attorney, to help you get these in documents in order.

Baby Dimensions is Newnan’s ultimate place to see your baby while you are pregnant. We have an upscale, spa-like boutique that can accommodate very large parties. It is also cozy enough that if you and your husband want your ultrasound to be just the two of you, you can do that too. Baby Dimensions is able to show your baby to you in 2D, 3D, 4D and the new HD Live! We purchased a new machine recently, and we are only one of a handful of places in the state of Georgia that has this new technology. It is absolutely mind blowing at how detailed you can see the baby’s features. Stacey, our registered sonographer, will make you feel like the baby is actually interacting with you during the session. There will also be a web cam video of the entire session. It will record every-thing that goes on during the session as well as what the baby is doing on the ultrasound screen. It makes a great keepsake to put in your Baby book. If you are expecting or have friends or family that are, a Gift Certificate makes the perfect gift. You can purchase one in any amount. We also host Baby Showers if you need the perfect spot to have one. There is nothing like having all of your friends and family be there to watch the show. Over the next few months, our Owner/Operator Stacey Livingston RDMS, will be answering some frequently asked questions that we have heard over the years. Not only is she registered, but she has been doing ultrasounds for 25 years. She has answered will continue to answwer many questions regarding baby ultrasounds. Feel free to text, call or e-mail us at [email protected] if you have questions about your ultrasounds during your pregnancy. Stay tuned for our first question next month: “Why do I have to drink so much water for my ultrasound?”** PLEASE NOTE – The answers that Stacey gives are strictly her opinion as a sonographer. They should not be taken in place of your physicians instructions. She is not a physician and has never claimed to be one.

15th Annual Appreciation Lunch Thursday, April 30th

at Coweta Fairgrounds

is lunch honors every single man and woman who works in Coweta County in any phase of public safety. e Newnan Coweta Public Safety Founda-tion sponsors this lunch, and it is possible through the donations of our citizens who wish to show their gratitude to our public safety folks.

Donations can be made to the NCPS Foundation, P.O. Box 1113, Newnan, Ga. 30264 and any amount will be appreciated. Every donation is tax deductible. Money not used for the luncheon will be used to aid public safety personnel who have medical or nan-cial needs, and also we have established an annual scholarship to bene t a child of a public safety person who attends either col-lege or a technical school. None of the money goes to administrative costs, and every donation will be publicly ac-knowledged.

We are also asking that every home and business display a Loyal Blue Ribbon during the week of April 26th.

Desserts are very much appreciated and can be delivered to the Fairgrounds by 10:30 on the morn-ing of April 30th. We hope to ll tables full of de-licious homemade goodies for these deserving men and women.
