Dear Friends

Giving thanks for the sun and the rain

Writing in mid-August, it is all too obvious thatthe season has turned. Sunrise is considerablylater than in the height of summer, and theevenings definitely drawing in. The sun is lowerin the sky in the mornings and there’s arefreshing, but definite autumnal nip in the air even on bright sunny mornings.Riding recently both on Wenlock Edge and around the lanes of Acton, it hasbeen clear that the season has turned. Signs of nature’s harvest were much inevidence. Blackberries were beginning to ripen; albeit bright green, but acornsare visible on the oak trees; sweet chestnuts on the sweet chestnut trees. Therowan trees have been thick with ripe berries for weeks. So what about the harvest we rely on for food. As we might expect given thedecidedly mixed weather over the summer months, harvest too is mixed. In Lincolnshire, a wet spring followed by a dry spell means the brassica harvestis poor. We can expect to pay a premium for cauliflower roasts and Christmasdinner sprouts may be scarce. Oilseed rape yields are down, affected bychangeable weather, pigeons and flea beetle, but the winter feed barley yield isexceptional, with a much higher yield than expected. In Cambridgeshire, NFUDeputy President, Guy Smith reports wheat yields at a 10-year high, while inDevon the same crop is yielding 20% less than expected, although the barleyharvest is above average. In Northumbria barley and oilseed rape yields aregood. And we must not forget the agricultural community in the YorkshireDales where severe flooding has washed away miles of dry-stone walling, livestock has been drowned and winter forage carefully stored for the winter hasbeen washed away and ruined. In other words, what kind of harvest it is,depends on where you are.The rain has been extreme. The heat has occasionally been extreme. Largelyin the pleasant climate of South Cheshire we have escaped the worst of theextremes. Nonetheless, we have had enough of rain and heat to remind usboth that we need both and that God sends both, not always in the rightamounts or at the right time. For a good harvest, whether of cultivated crops, or of nature, or even of ourlives, for the harvest to be good we need both the sun and the rain. Harvesttime is as good a time as any to give thanks to God who sends us both.

Amen

Revd Anne

Courage to ChangeThis is the title of a little book published by Al-Anon, and to quote from the preface , 'Al-Anon has but one purpose: to help the families and friends of alcoholics.'Help comes through meetings of people who are all affected in some way by alcoholabuse. There are no subs; you can remain anonymous; and you do not have to speak atthe meeting. If you do speak then only Christian names are used, and what you say isconfidential within the group. You do not have to attend every week but just when you feel the need.Every meeting ends with the Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept thethings I cannot change, courage to change the things I can,and the wisdom to know thedifference. There are meetings in Sandbach during the day and evening meetings at Middlewich andAlsager. If you think that Al-Anon might help you then ask the vicar who will pass on details ofwhere we meet and any other information you may need.

Shoe Boxes (all Parishes)Please start to collect items to fill a shoe box with goodies, in time to be sent to a child inneed at Christmas. Many of you are old hands at this and need no prompting. More boxesare always welcome of course. We are not quite sure yet who will collect our contributions this year but it seems likely thatwe will join up with Nantwich Parish church.Watch this space!

Be AwareIn April of this year we published an article on these pages, warning about the “TVLicensing Scam” Just to remind you that the scam is still going on with a recent high profilevictim, TV presenter Helen Skelton received the email warning her that the TV license hadexpired, distracted by looking after her children she clicked on the link and paid theoutstanding amount with her debit card. A few days later she received a phone callpurporting to be from her bank, saying there had been suspicious activity on her account, she checked her account while on the phone with the “bank” and saw that there had beenwithdrawals and purchases she knew nothing about, unwisely she gave the caller securityinformation she was asked for and this enabled the thieves to wipe out her savingsaccount completely, A figure of around £70,000. She went in to the bank and reported it assoon as she realised what had happened. At first the bank wouldn't refund the moneybecause she had facilitated the theft by handing over her details they later relented andrefunded the money stolen (the benefit of being a TV presenter). So be warned it canhappen to anyone!!REMEMBER● Don’t click on the links or attachments in suspicious emails and never respond

to messages that ask for your personal or financial details.● Don’t assume a phone call or email is authentic, even if someone knows your

basic details (such as your name or address). Remember, criminals can spoofphone numbers and email addresses to appear as companies you know andtrust, such as TV Licensing.

● Your bank will never call and ask you for your PIN, full banking password, orask you to transfer money out of your account.
