CONGRATULATIONS CHICAGO CUBS!By: Fr. Tom HurleySunday, Nov. 6, 2016

Without knowing anything about educational theory, learning methods, or even how the brain works, I think it’s safe to say that we all have different ways of soaking in information. Some of us are visual learners; some are great readers; some benefit from being great listeners; while still others learn best when they are in a group setting. I guess one side of the brain does better with numbers and science, while the other side thrives off of poetry, language, and the world of art. With that being said, I love imagery. Though I’m not an artist, I think i must be a visual learner. One of the things I enjoy doing on this campus is walking the halls of our school, Frances Xavier Warde, and seeing the great works of art created by our students. On their lockers, taped to the walls, and splattered throughout the classrooms you see the expression of ideas captured in the images of people, places, and things.

I don’t know about you (and remember this is coming from a Sox fan), but I think there is no better image than seeing a team rush the pitcher’s mound at the conclusion of a 10 inning World Series of game 7. Capturing the faces of joy, disbelief, and unspeakable excitement is an image that needs to be tattooed on the hearts of every human being. While it is hard to believe, after a 108 year drought, that the Cubs are the World Series Champions, no matter your allegiance, this is great stuff and I think we as a city really needed it. One of the very fond memories I have in my mind from when “we” won the World Series back in 2005 was driving into Holy Sepulchre Cemetery on the south side and seeing countless (but I mean numerous) graves that were adorned with White Sox pennants, flags, and other celebratory memorabilia for their loved ones. I have a feeling that in the coming days and weeks, at cemeteries scattered around the Chicagoland area, the Cubbie blue and the now famous W will be waving at the graves of Eternal fans! It’s a wonderful and welcomed image.

In a big, complicated city like ours where violence and shootings have become an almost expected daily report on the nightly news, having a Cubs victory and ringing in the joy of a championship is a true blessing. The sad reality, however, is that the revelry will last for only a few days but the imagery of suffering will most likely continue. While many fans celebrated a victory at home and in taverns, other fans still were gathered under Lower Wacker. It took the Cubs 108 years to figure out how to win the World Series. May it take us much less time to figure out how we

can repair the broken lives in our city and find the root causes of the poverty, homelessness, and violence that plagues us.

Yes, it is a great day to rejoice for the Cubbies! I suspect today at Old St. Pat’s we’ll see lots of blue jerseys and smiling faces. Joy and celebration is the image of what I believe God intended for us. And when a prodigal son had been away for a long time and found his way back to the nest, a father went running with great excitement to welcome him home. And when a shepherd lost one sheep, goes and finds it, he comes back thrilled as can be! And when a poor lady loses one precious coin and sweeps diligently until she finds it, her only reaction is to call friends together to celebrate. When we find our way back to being fully alive, filled with spirit, and being most human as God wants us to be, there’s no other thing to do than to celebrate.

May the images of joy and celebration sustain us and motivate us to bring that joy to other parts of our life, our city, our world. This will be a big week for this country with Tuesday’s election. Let’s pray for each other and for the common good of the United States. It’s been a long, grueling election. Please join us Wednesday in Church as we pray for the nation.

Peace and Congratulations to All The Cubs fans among us!

Father Tom Hurley

MASS OF REMEMBRANCEBy: Bernadette Moore-GibsonSunday, Nov. 6, 2016

In this church today we will share in the Mass of Remembrance for those who have died.

Together we mourn the losses of some wonderful people. But I pray our masses today will be one of celebration of what awaits us, and a celebration of those who have gone before us and are already experiencing God’s peace. Today, we commemorate the threshold where God will wipe away all our tears and where there will be no more death. Each week in our Creed we pray together that we believe in the communion of saints, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. In doing so, we prove our hope that our loved ones have a place in the Kingdom of God. For so many of us facing losses, our lives will never be quite the same. And yet…some things are still the same. Traditions continue. Another day begins and hope endures. As a people of faith, we need to remember that. Life goes on. And, more importantly, by God’s grace, love goes on.

After His resurrection, Jesus showed Himself to His disciples at various times and in various ways. One of the most poignant manifestations of His Resurrection was His appearance to the two disciples making their way on the road to Emmaus. Only Luke records the story. Perhaps like us, these two disciples, walked 7 miles down a winding road of grief questioning their losses. And this is where the story takes an interesting turn.

“They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him.” Jesus began to walk with them and listen to them and love them. Mysteriously restrained from recognizing Jesus, the two disciples were confused that this “stranger” was unaware of the news making events of the past several days in Jerusalem. After all that Cleopas and the other disciples had witnessed, heard and lost, they were still totally confused and downhearted about Jesus’ death. It took Jesus’ own

explanation of the words of the scriptures to help them understand the significance of the resurrection and then for their hearts to burn with the newness of their understanding. Amazed by the wisdom and knowledge of Jesus, the disciples uttered a cry of the heart that still reverberates in the souls of believers everywhere: “Stay with us.” Only Christ - the Christ of the cross and the empty tomb - can make sense of the trials that confront a person as we face death. “Stay with us” gives God “permission” to remain in our lives through the invisible but nevertheless real principle of grace.

I love the Gospel of Emmaus because when Jesus came and talked to those two broken disciples, the meaning of life became clear, and the darkness became light. Perhaps we all walk the road to Emmaus. We all know what it’s like to try and walk just far enough to get away from the misery and confusion of our losses. The longer we live, the more times life asks us to say goodbye to someone who has died and for whom we have loved. Like so many of you, I have said goodbye to people I loved this past year. I have known both the depths of grief and the lingering sense of loss that causes me to question my faith. I have also learned that although their bodies live no more, in a very real way, these loves ones are with me still. Because even in the midst of “no longer” here on earth, there is a ray of hope that shines within me. A knowing. A promise that I will one day see my loved ones again. Even those disciples who had encountered the Risen Lord needed time to come to a full understanding of this new reality. That is the challenge of our Christian life.

It is my prayer that as we continue on this Emmaus Road together, that we will find our hearts burning within us as we come to recognize that Jesus walks with us in our grief. Together we trust in the God who loves to care for us and our loved ones in life and also in death. And so we pray, May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

“…He will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things

have passed away. Jesus said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’”

Please join us as Hughes Hall is transformed into an international market! More than thirty different vendors will display beautiful and unique products created by artisans from as far away as East Africa and Central America to as near as the West Side of Chicago.

While this “alternative market” offers us a chance to get an early start on holiday shopping, the Solidarity Market is so much more than a holiday craft fair. The Solidarity Market at Old St. Pat’s is another expression of our desire for kinship along with our desire to promote, whenever we are able, the economic equity of our sisters and brothers throughout the world.

Our Market vendors and exhibitors have been selected because of their commitment to: • fighting poverty and transforming lives through job training and worker justice • creating entrepreneurial opportunities for people often denied access to markets • being good stewards of the earth’s resources

Support of the Solidarity Market is another opportunity for us to live out our commitment to “Care for Our Common Home.”

In addition to the special items our vendors will have for sale, they will be delighted to share with you the stories of the people they work with, including their struggles and successes. Please stop by Hughes Hall and meet these remarkable people and learn about their efforts to create a better world! Refreshments, of course, will be served.

JOIN THE MORNING GREETERS AT NORTH LAWNDALE COLLEGE PREP

The school year at North Lawndale College Prep (NLCP) is officially off to a great start! This year members of Old St. Pat's plan to greet students and staff as they enter the building for the school day on Monday mornings at the Christiana Campus (16th and Christiana) and on Friday mornings at the Collins Campus (in Douglas Park- just south of the Roosevelt Road entrance). This is not a labor intensive volunteer activity, yet it makes a huge impact. We simply gather at the school around 7:50 am and greet those entering school until 8:30 am. We finish in plenty of time to get to work - the schools are located close to the loop.

To some, it may seem silly and frivolous - merely a "feel good" measure. But over the past four years, students, staff and parents have warmly received us and reciprocate by wishing us a good day. As we build relationships and encourage others, we indeed build "kinship."

This will be our fourth year with 2-3 greeters each day. Some have been regulars; some simply join us as their schedules permit. The Christiana Campus (Monday) has ample street parking. The Collins Campus (Fridays) has a parking lot. If you'd like to join us, please do. Just bring your open heart and smile.

If you'd like to join in, please email Peg Roth at [email protected] the day before because inclement weather and the school calendar may vary and we'd hate for you to trek over on a day when NLCP is not in session.

Thanks - Hope to see you "at high school" again.

Peg Roth is a long time and active member of Old St. Pat's Church. She has coordinated Morning Greeters at NLCP for the last three years.

OSPnext FellowshipCATHOLICISM 101: A COMMUNION OF SAINTSWednesday, Nov. 16 | 6:30 - 8 pm Hughes Hall

More people than you can see gather around the altar each time the Eucharist is celebrated. We are part of a people, a tribe, a clan that transcends not only racial, geo-political, and ethnic boundaries, but also time. And November is the month to celebrate this, the month of All Saints, All Souls, and the ultimate reign of Christ--when all the faithful (including you!) will be gathered into the “kin-dom” of God. At the head of our pack, the Great Mother of God, who is our Mother, too. Through art and story, come meet more of the relatives, especially those saints depicted in our beautiful church.

About the Speaker:

BOOK DRIVESunday, Nov. 20 | Before and After All Masses

In this season of gratitude, consider sharing the gift of books. OSP Next’s Faith in Action committee will be collecting books of all types on Sunday, November 20, at all Masses. The donations will benefit:

• Young Men’s Educational Network, a Lawndale Kinship partner providing academic support, leadership development activities, community service opportunities to young men in the North Lawndale community.

• Two books-to-prison organizations (Chicago Books to Women in Prison and Books to Prisoners)

• Chicago’s Open Books, supporting youth and adult literacy

We’re seeking any books in good condition, with particular need for books in the following categories: children’s books, young adult books, dictionaries, up-to-date computer guides, Bibles, and any books in Spanish. Volunteers will be posted outside after Mass – look for the sign!

Just the BeginningYou’re InvIted

We’d like to invite you to a weekend of beginnings. Whether you’re old or young (at heart), single or married, religious or skeptic, hurt or healing, laid back or caffeinated, you’ll fit right into our Beloved Retreat.

Founded in 1999, the Beloved Retreat offers you a community within Old St. Pat’s and our Catholic Church. Our hope is that, together, we can rediscover what often eludes us, but what God wants us to know: that you are Beloved.

We offer a safe, open inclusive environment in a quite, pastoral setting where you can explore your relationship with God and yourself.

Another BeginningThe Beloved Retreat doesn’t end with the weekend. After the retreat, you’ll find another beginning. Regular Sunday Legacy meetings extend the Beloved experience and deepen our roots as a community of believers.

In addition, you can join small prayer groups to spiritually grow and deepen your personal faith and companionship with others.

MEET KATIE KOREN | Submitted by: Vincent Guider

When it comes to ministry, Katie Koren, an active Old St. Pat’s member, truly exemplifies what it means. Her passion for life, respect for people and ability to get things done truly makes her a minister to emulate.

The term ministry is derived from the Greek word diakoneo, meaning “to serve” or douleuo, meaning “to serve as a slave.” In the New Testament, ministry is seen as service to God and to other people in His name. In fact, Jesus entire life and mission modeled ministry for us all.

Many have noticed and admired Katie’s contributions to the community, and here are a few samples of comments people have made about her impact on Old St. Pat’s Church and beyond:

“One word come to my mind when I think about what Katie Koren means to Old St. Pat’s Church and beyond - ubiquitous! Katie is at so many social justice / social action oriented events involving Old St Pat’s. We see her at the 7 Last Words of Christ during Lent, at the Blessed Sacrament Youth Center and doing community gardening in North Lawndale, at the Kinship Initiative Mardi Gras celebration in February and leading OSP Next outreach projects. She is everywhere radiating her warmth and amazing ability to get things done. Katie is a wonderful blessing.”

Jim Power, Member

Old St. Pat’s Church

“Her energy, her smile, easy laughter and the willingness to approach individuals from all walks of life make katie so special, She will walk up to anybody and give them a hug. There are so many positive things about her. I remember we were breaking down after the Continuing the Dream Weekend when we celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King in North Lawndale last summer. Katie went and brought over two little girls and a woman she’d just met to help us move a large wooden platform in from the street. The girls and woman were glad to help, largely due to Katie’s warmth and care for people.”

Larry Dixon, MLK Fair Housing Exhibit Director

North Lawndale

“Katie Koren continues to inspire me as a leader, a disciple, a woman of courage and faith. She has supported our efforts to secure a community-funded mental health center on the west side of Chicago. She works tirelessly in her personal and professional life to ensure physical, mental, and spiritual health of those she encounters. She also participated in an Old St. Pat’s small group this past summer about prison reform, and she continues to reflect on her own privilege and identity in order to combat systemic injustice. She brings an honest and genuine warmth to conversations and does not back away from difficult realities.”

Rachel Lyons, Social Action Ministries Director

Old St. Pat’s Church

He came, not to receive service, but to give it.

Matthew 20:28; Mark 10:45; John 13:1-17

Whether you meet her at mass, an OSPnext gathering or a special event at Old St. Pat’s, if you see her involved in North Lawndale through the Kinship Initiative, if she’s immersed in social justice work somewhere in Chicago-land or if just meet her on the street, she is a ready source of joy and inspiration. Katie, we commend and pray for you. May your incredible spirit continue to touch us.

“That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called out ‘Lord,’ the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac,

and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.” - Lk 20:37-38

Women and Men of FaithSt. Elizabeth of the TrinityNovember 8

Elizabeth Catez offers hope to any parent who struggles with a strong-willed child. A holy terror as a toddler, she once embarrassed her mother by shouting out at Mass, “Bad priest! Bad priest! That’s my doll!” The priest had secretly borrowed her doll to be used as the Christ Child in his creche..

Elizabeth’s first communion and confirmation at age 10 touched her deeply without quelling her rambunctiousness. But from that time she opened up to an interior prayer life that slowly matured into the infused contemplation of a mystic. At 14 she desired to become a Carmelite. Her mother was horrified at the thought. She did all she could do to prevent it. She sent Elizabeth to parties in hopes that these might distract her and arranged for suitors to pursue her. But she could not in the end resist her daughter’s strong will. She gave up and allowed Elizabeth to enter the Dijon Carmel in 1901.

Appropriately, she took the name Elizabeth of the Trinity, for the focus of her life became her immersion in the Godhead, or rather the Trinity’s immersion in her. This letter from Elizabeth to a friend typifies her spirituality:

“I love to penetrate beyond the veil of the soul to this inner sanctuary where we live alone with God... Listen to everything that is being sung . . . in his heart. It is Love, the infinite love that envelops us and desires to give us a share . . . in all his blessedness....All day long let us surrender ourselves to Love, by doing the will of God, under his gaze, with him, in him, for him alone. . . .”

Elizabeth delighted the other sisters in the cloister with her simple and joyful service. However, in 1903, she contracted Addison’s disease. She suffered intensely and joyfully until she died in 1906. St. Elizabeth of the Trinity was only 26-years-old.
