“It is not as important to begin as it is to learn to begin again.”

Theologian Karl Barth

Dear Friends,

The days of summer are waning away. The leaves are even now beginning to lace the rectory yard. The nights

are growing cooler. Families are taking those last few days of relaxation and vacation before September arrives.

And here at Christ Church, as with every year at this time, we invite everyone “Back to Church!”

This year we really mean it. “Back to Church!”

On Sunday, September 8th, we return to our much-loved church building after a summer of exile in the Parish

Hall during the extended work on the ceiling. As much as I love our church building, I must say I really enjoyed

our weeks in the Parish House. Worship spaces dictate the way we worship, and indeed it was a different

experience with folding chairs, a portable keyboard, and much relaxed liturgy. Preaching feels different.

Praying feels different. Passing the Peace is different. Even the way we engage the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist

has a different feel. And how great it is to have Coffee brewing away within a few footsteps! I don’t know about

you, but it allowed me to take a step back and think about how we do “church” in a whole different way.

But now I am ready to be back: “Back to Church!” September quickens our spirits and calls us back from our

summer “break”. It calls us to begin again and to renew the rhythm of our lives together. I think we are all ready

to get back to the heart of our community and all that our community holds dear. September 8th not only will

mark our return to the church with special prayers and blessings, it marks the Kick-Off of our Program Year.

Our own Sue Napoletano will be addressing the congregation on this Sunday; she is not to be missed! The

Church School will be registering children for the coming year – including a whole new class for our youngest

learners with three new teachers ready to go. In the afternoon, our Youth and their parents will be gathering at

the home of Susan and Bob Van Valkenburgh for a pool party. EFM (Education, Formation, Ministry) begins

its weekly seminar at the rectory on Monday, September 9th. Peak of the Week begins Wednesday, September

11th, and GFS (Girls Friendly Society) is hosting a Mother/Daughter Tea on Sunday, September 15th. We will

truly be “Back to Church!”

Not only are our Christian Formation programs beginning again, but everything else as well. Before you know

it, you will be getting details on our 2020 Stewardship Campaign Kick-Off. P.J. Reyes will be signing you up

for our Fall Outreach Project, Crop Walk. And of course, you will begin hearing more and more about our

biggest parish event of the year, The Christmas Bazaar and Lantern Tour.

But for one more moment, I want to get back to the church. After all, this is the 250th anniversary year for the

church – don’t you think it is fitting that we chose this year to tackle the ceiling? For the work never, ever ends

– and as Barth reminds us, “It is not as important to begin as it is to learn to begin again” and that is exactly

what we do. We will be looking back on our long history with the special Event. A lecture and reception on

Saturday, September 14th at 5:00pm in the church building. We will be remembering our roots and those who

made it possible for us to be here - even as we look forward to where God is leading us. For we are indeed back.

Ready to begin again, ready to be God’s holy people in our own day and time.

Peace,

Mother Lisa+

we were not contacted to keep on the list. Please know

To George Edwards for taking the time to share

updated photos of our Church Ceiling progress with

the congregation! (see page 14 for more of Georges

photos)

To Jim O’Connor and Connie Goddard who

hosted Covenant House Day at the Beach, and to all

who contributed items.

To Lynn Marengo for donating our annual Norton

anti-virus software and thanks to Steve Craven for

all his IT work on our office computers.

his leadership that has not only made it possible, but

has enabled us to move smoothly through the

process.

To Gen Hansen…..we heard Gen Hansen had a

way of making table linens look like new! Thank

you so much, Gen, for the wonderful job you did in

tackling several pasta-stained table linens from the

Bishops Reception. They surely sparkle now.

A special note from CHRIS PSOLKA:

As many of you know, Jamie and I are dealing with

the loss of our daughter, Annie, who died last

December. In order to move forward, I need to take

time for myself to reflect on my loss and release

myself from some of the responsibilities of daily

life. Toward that end, I have requested a sabbatical

from my position as Music Director here at Christ

Church. The vestry has generously granted a leave

of absence beginning on September 8 and returning

on December 1. During my absence, Jim Palmer, a

cradle Episcopalian and accomplished

organist/choir director, will play the 10:00 am

Sunday service and lead the choir, which will

remain active during my leave.

A little bit about Jim Palmer: Jim Palmer is a native of Peekskill, New York,

where he was involved in music from an early age

at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, his home parish.

After deciding that a career in computer science was

not for him, in 1987 he relocated to Princeton, New

Jersey to attend Westminster Choir College, where

he studied organ and voice. Jim has held a number

of significant church appointments in New

York and New Jersey, and since 2017 he has been

active as a supply/interim church musician in

Middlesex and Monmouth Counties. As a supporter

of the Organ Historical Society, he is particularly

delighted to play Christ Church’s historic

instrument. Jim currently lives in North

Brunswick with his three rescue kitties, and is

looking forward to his time at Christ Church.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS…..

Sunday, September 8th

8:00AM & 10:00AM Services resume

We return to our regular service schedule

AND to our Church Building.

Please mark your calendars!

Morning Prayer and Peak of the Week

returns on Wednesday, September 11th

Parish House Library

9:30 – 10:00 Morning Prayer

10:15 – 11:15 Peak of the Week

Peak of the Week We're almost at our Peak! Come on and join us--

Pax by Sara Pennypacker is our book for the month

for September. Pax is a deceptively simple story of

a fox and his boy. But don’t let the simple

presentation fool you. There is much to be found

beneath the surface of this little book.

Morning Prayer at 9:30, snacks at 10:15, book talk

and more snacks--what a way to start a

Wednesday!

September 11-- be there or miss a good thing.

Second Saturday Workday

A vital part of church activities is the monthly

Second Saturday "Project" Day. True it is work, but

it really takes willing hands to get things done.

After our summer of storms and growth there is

yard work and trimming to be done. A major project

that we can make a starting attempt is to tighten up

loose parts of the fence that rusted nails and screws

need to be replaced. So do set aside an hour or two

on Saturday September 14th between 10:00 AM

and 4:00 PM to lend a hand. A simple and warm

lunch will be provided.

Backpacks for a Smooth

Start to School

Once again this year, we are helping children here

in Monmouth County begin the school year with

needed materials and supplies. There are children

who begin school without the needed supplies such

as pencils and notebooks, delaying or impeding

their fresh start to the new school year. We hope to

make a difference for some of these children.

Please consider providing a child with some needed

supplies such as:

Sturdy backpack, pencils, pens, crayons,

markers, colored pencils, highlighters, zippered

pencil case, spiral notebooks (no binders),

homework notebooks, child scissors, glue sticks,

marble notebooks, erasers, and other young

child specific supplies.

Please bring the backpacks or supplies to church by

Sunday, September 8th.

Please help us help some children again this year.

Your generosity is appreciated.

*We have had a number of backpacks donated.

If you see an empty one take one home, fill it

with supplies, and return it!

Blessing of the Backpacks

Sunday, September 8th will be held

in the Parish House.

FUNDRAISER IS BACK!

Boscov’s Friends Helping Friends promotion is

coming back to Monmouth Mall in October! Every

year, Boscov’s offers Monmouth area, non-profit,

charitable organizations a unique fund-raising

opportunity. This year’s promotion will take place

at Boscov’s Monmouth Mall on October 16, 2019.

In order to partake of the 25% off promotion, you

must present an admission ticket. The cost of each

admission ticket is $5.00 - reasonable enough!

This is the best part, for each ticket sold the Church

will receive $5.00. Yes, the full amount!! Once

again we are participating in this novel and

relatively effortless fundraiser. A new feature of

the promotion this year is that prior to the sale, we

can set up a table in Boscov’s to sell these tickets

for our benefit.

I will have the coupons in hand shortly and they

will be available for purchase starting this Sunday,

September 1. Coupons will also be available in the

Parish House beginning next week. Besides raising

much-needed funds, our Church may even get some

free PR through the Boscov’s newspaper ads as all

participating organizations will be listed.

It’s a win-win situation all around.

Beach Report!

Christ Church sponsored eight Covenant House

young adults and staff to a day at Sandy Hook

Beach on Monday August 6th. Thanks to Connie

Goddard a potentially disappointing day turned into

a magical day! The ocean was too rough to go in

but thanks to Connie bringing her kayak the group

learned to kayak in the Sandy Hook Bay! We rented

additional kayaks and paddle boards for the day

with Connie being a great teacher! Another

beautiful part of the story is when the owner of the

kayak rentals heard about what we were doing he

immediately gave us a discount on the cost! The

same spontaneous kind gesture occurred at the deli

in the morning when the lunches were purchased for

the day.

Thank you to everyone who so generously donated

money, flip flops, sunblock and other beach

necessities to make this a great day for these

homeless young adults.

God Bless!

Community Garden Update

Massive cucumbers!!! Harvest time is in full swing

at the Christ Church Garden. We have had great

results with the cherry tomatoes this year but not so

much with the larger tomatoes. If anyone has

growing suggestions they are welcome!

If you would like to get involved in this worthwhile

ministry or would just like to tour the garden

COFFEE HOUR Hosts Needed:

We Episcopalians love our Coffee Hour! Some

have even called it the “eighth sacrament” of the

Church. Well, this eighth sacrament needs some

ministers! Please sign up for a week as Host for the

Coffee Hour. Sign-up sheet is on the Parish Life

Bulletin Board. It is easy and fun – and you’ll be

glad you did. If you need instructions, direction, let

US know and we will be happy to assist you.

“Those Who Serve” Help Wanted!!

We are always looking for additional lay ministers

to serve at our worship! Have you ever considered

it? Acolytes, Greeters, Ushers, Lectors, and Chalice

Bearers, ALL play very important roles in our

services. The more lay ministers we have, the less

often one individual has to serve! We would like to

have enough volunteers so that each lay minister

would only have to serve once a month! If you

have any questions or would like to join any one of

our teams, please talk to Mother Lisa or call the

office. Looking forward to talking to you!

“Those Who Serve” SCHEDULES

We have started preparing the October/November

schedule!! Please let us know if you have any dates

you are not available. A reminder that once the

schedule has been distributed YOU are responsible

for finding a replacement or someone to

switch/trade dates with. Please notify the office of

any arrangements/changes you have made. If you

have trouble finding a replacement/trade, you may

also (as soon as possible) Email the church office

for additional help. We will circulate an Email to

help you to find a replacement and advise you of

our findings. Thanks so much.

Checking in With Queeni*

We continue to support Queeni Caay, our college

student in the Philippines. Due to her serious health

issues this past year, Queeni was unable to secure

any scholarship money for this next year, but she is

now on the list for next year! She is working as she

can to not only help put herself through college but

to assist her family as she is able. For this reason,

we have increased our scholarship to her from $250

per month to $350. This scholarship is provided by

the private and designated generosity of

parishioners. Please continue to keep Queeni in

your prayers as she keeps us in hers.

*Queeni Caay is a Philippine student Christ Church supplied a scholarship for college.

Did You Know? Stories of Christ Church History

by: Robert M. Kelly, Jr.

Parish Historian

“Did You Know … ?”

Did You Know About the Reverend Benjamin

Franklin?

The Reverend Benjamin F. Franklin was Rector of

Christ Church in Shrewsbury from 1875 to 1898.

He died while he was our Rector and is buried in

the graveyard.

This past week I received an inquiry from Great

Britain about Reverend Franklin from a woman

who was reading one of his books. She had sorted

out his connection to us. This prompted me to write

about him in this month’s issue of the Crown.

Reverend Franklin was born in Providence, RI in

1819. He was educated at Brown University and the

General Theological Seminary. Prior to coming to

Christ Church, he held positions in Maryland,

Philadelphia, Delaware, Trenton and Indianapolis.

Reverend Franklin was married twice. His first

wife, Emma, died in 1884. Two years later he

married Lucy Shiff of New York. He and his first

wife had four daughters. One, Emma Windsor,

married Dr. Frederick Van Vliet and settled in

Shrewsbury. They are also both buried in the

graveyard.

The Reverend Benjamin Franklin

12

During his tenure the church was redecorated with

the exterior painted a dark putty color. On the

interior installations of a new carved altar of

butternut wood, bronze communion railings, the

eagle lectern, and the marble baptismal font were

realized. Some of these changes appear to have

been consistent with Reverend Franklin’s sympathy

with high-church traditions.

Reverend Franklin seems to have been a person

who led a life of spiritual and intellectual dignity

supported by his eloquence. He was not always in

good health taking a five-year sabbatical from the

ministry in the 1860s. The strong outpouring of

sentiment upon his death demonstrated the deep

affection for this priest. In a newspaper article

describing the funeral service, the following was

written.

“After the service in church, the white robed

procession wended its way to the grave in the

churchyard, where after the committal had been

said, the hymns “Hark! Hark! My Soul” and the

“Nunc Dimittis” were sung at the open grave. No

sermon, address, or eulogy were spoken, and the

very solemn simplicity of the service over one, who

in intellectual ability, was easily the first clergyman

in the Diocese, was one of its eloquent charms, and

most comforting to all present who had known and

revered the departed.”

This may be a photo of that procession.

Note the cantilevered stained-glass window

The year after Reverend Franklin’s death a new

parish house was constructed on the same site as the

present building. This building was dedicated to

Reverend Franklin and included a time capsule in

the cornerstone with much information about the

Reverend Franklin. Sadly, this time capsule has not

been found. In addition, stained glass windows

reflecting that dedication were installed. These were

re-installed in the present parish house on the east

wall.

One natural question is if there is any genealogical

connection of Reverend Franklin with the Founding

Father of the same name. The answer is yes! Both

are descended from Thomas and Jane Franklin of

Ecton, England. Founding Father Franklin is their

grandchild and they are Reverend Franklin’s fourth

great grandparents.

His gravemarker is a roughhewn stone cross

without inscription, possibly reflecting Reverend

Franklin’s strength of faith and humility.

Robert M. Kelly, Jr.

Parish Historian

A special Did you Know….. (from Mother Lisa+)

….that members of the clergy are particularly

targeted for use in scams? Because pastors and

priests are deemed as honest and their parishioners

trust them, they are often used in fraudulent

schemes. Scammers assume you will “buy”

anything they ask for and send them your hard-

earned dollars. Anyone can go to church websites,

pick up the names, and then send out emails using

our names. Several of my colleagues have

experienced this.

SO: if you by chance get anything that says it is

from me, first check the email address. Is it from

[email protected]? That is the

only email address I use to contact parishioners, so

if it is anything else, delete it! Second, if you ever

get a request from me to send money or gift cards,

know that it is not me! I do not request anything

like that in an email. Third, pay attention to the

language used: does it sound like me? If I am

calling you “beloved”, using strange grammar, etc.,

then it is most likely not me! You know me and my

“voice” well enough to be skeptical. And you can

always email, call, or text me to be sure.

CHURCH CEILING ASSESSMENT As this edition of the Crown goes to press, the final

contractor work on the church ceiling has been

completed. Following the removal of all the paint,

the ceiling has been completely repainted three

times after repairs and removal of corrosion.

Stephanie Hoagland, our consultant has approved

the work and the construction materials in the nave

have been removed. Next week the organ is being

put back into working order. The church is in the

same state as the contractors found it but with a

newly stripped and painted ceiling that should last

many decades at the least. Further, the decorations

on the metal ceiling that have been hidden for years

by many layers of paint are now much more visible

and they are quite detailed and beautiful.

The test to ensure the paint will adhere is to take a

piece of industrial strength duct tape and place it

securely on the ceiling. This is then ripped off to see

if any paint came with it. There was none.

The workers led by Luis, a highly experienced

historic site painter, have been superb in their high

standards of quality and thoughtfulness in dealing

with any special conditions that arose.

Due to the ceiling height and the lead paint removal

process, this restoration was quite expensive.

However, we chose to take the long view and to

make this newly painted ceiling one that will last

and not burden future congregations with frequent

repairs or living with chronic peeling. This decision

was eased by the generosity and thoughtfulness of

Robert Manson who bequeathed a significant sum

to the parish to be used solely for the maintenance

of our historic church building. The achievement of

this signature restoration in the church’s 250th

anniversary has had special feeling and

significance.

There remains some work to be done on our part to

be ready to once again worship in the church on

September 8th

, for the first time since the Bishop’s

visit on June 30th

. This means returning many items

that were removed from the nave to allow the

contractors to work.

But when we enter the church on September 8th

, I

expect a lot of ceiling gazing as we all admire this

beautifully repainted 114 year-old metal ceiling and

the new element it adds to our worship experience.

Narthex in the near future.

Some of the opportunities are . . . . .

dollar amount of goods in the Bazaar. Nice! Ad Journal packages will soon be available now in the Parish

Hall.

This is a WONDERFUL, big seller. Visitors and parishioners alike love the wide variety of tasteful goodies,

both for snacking on the spot or taking home or bringing to your friends’ home. If you love to bake, this one is

for you, or, come and help with sales in this very busy shop! Again, sign-up sheets will be available in the

Parish House and in the Church Narthex.

CALENDAR GAME – Such a fun and meaningful game. Perhaps you would like to be the person to run this

simple game? All the work is already done. We just need that special person, or, persons to run it!

COMMUNICATIONS – Vital. Do you enjoy Face Book, Instagram? Perhaps you know how to get print

media exposure, or, billboards, or, radio ads. Maybe you know folks in local government or municipal services.

We urgently need those people who will be able to give the Bazaar and Lantern Tours the public exposure that

will make our events present and desirable in the minds of the surrounding area.

DECORATING – The Bazaar always looks fantastic, but, it doesn’t happen by “elfin magic” alone.

Volunteers of all ages will find this a fun experience, and, it will be sure to put you in the Christmas spirit, too!

GIFT BASKETS – Donations are being accepted all during the Fall in preparation for the Bazaar. A

suggestion list to help you decide what type of theme basket you may consider creating will be available in the

Parish Hall before the end of September.

KITCHEN – We are looking for that special person or persons to help in the Kitchen during the Bazaar and

Lantern Tour.

KNITTING PEARLS – This talented group produces and sells beautiful, handmade items throughout the year,

and, is under the leadership of Perky Cameron. Please see Perky as soon as possible for directions to make this

year’s Bazaar project.

LANTERN TOUR CHARACTERS – If you have ever been on our highly popular Lantern Tour, you know

what brings history to life…..our actors! You also know that folks come from far and wide to attend. We are

looking for actors to portray our various historic personalities as we guide our guests back into the unique

history that makes up our “Historic Four Corners”!

MORAVIAN PIE – Headed up by Mother Lisa, this holiday season favorite is so mouth-watering, you’ll want

to buy several! Order yours before they are sold out!

SET UP/TAKE DOWN/CLEAN UP – We definitely need help and volunteers for this one. It is at the core of

what makes the Bazaar and Lantern Tours successful year after year. Here is a valuable, appreciated venue

where your help is needed. Multiple people are needed! Please consider giving us a hand with this. The best

part is: Our Set Up/Take Down/Clean Up Team gets to enjoy and experience the Bazaar along with their family

and friends!

TRINKETS & TREASURES – Held downstairs in the Parish House, Trinkets & Treasures has something for

everyone . . . even the children can find a treasure to capture their imagination! It is the first stop for many

Bazaar goers.

YE OLDE CURIOSITY SHOPPE – Vintage and used items in excellent condition are needed and will be

sold by our Shop Keepers. Find that something special right here!

Our goal this year is to make this one of the best, most memorable and most profitable Christmas Bazaars yet!

We are looking forward to your help in achieving this goal for our beloved, historic Christ Church. Don’t wait .

. . Join us now!

All the best,

Colleen & Mark Roth
