RECONCILIATION SPECIAL FFERING

October 23 and October 30Envelopes will be in your bulletins those Sundays.

This Special Offering is used to fund our Church’s mission imperative to become a pro-reconciling and anti-racist church utilizing experiential education, inclusive worship and intentional dialogue. Recent events have reignited the conversation about human brokenness evidenced in the sin of racism and perpetuated in our institutional structures and systems. Your generous giving to Reconciliation Ministry is transforming lives and strengthening Christ’s witness in the world showing that we love one another, even as Christ continues to love us!

NEXT BOOK CLUB + EVENTOur next selection is Black Angel by local writer, Martin Litvin.

This is a short, fictional re-telling of the Sukey Richardson. She was a run-away slave, who ended up in Knox County. We will discuss this book over a bring-your-own-sack supper on Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m. at the church, in the Library. We will complete our discussion, and, for those interested, attend a live production of Three Remarkable Women. This is a play about 1860 Knox County women: Susan Van Allen Richardson (aka Sukey), Mary Allen West and Mary Ann Bickerdyke. This event begins at 7:00 p.m. at Central Congregational Church; there is no cost but free will donations will be accepted.

Deadline for book orders is Sunday, October 16 th . We are ordering the books on Monday morning, October 17th!!!

Please get your orders in A.S.A.P.Have you ever asked yourself, “What can I do?” You look

around at our world that is so much in need and you think, “I’m just one person. What on earth could I do to help?” I think we can do so much more than we think. One person CAN make a difference!

Here are a few examples:1) Our nation – PRAY, REGISTER AND VOTE! We are just weeks away from our national elections! You truly can make a

difference by praying – and voting. We received a letter from Pamela Davidson, from Knox County Board, that said, in part: “There are thousands of followers of Jesus Christ who are not registered to vote in our community. Likewise, there are thousands of Christians who are registered to vote and they don’t vote. It’s time to change the narrative on both sides. We are commanded to pray for our country and our leaders. But having prayed, God expects us to act. … Don’t wait until the election time is upon us before you start seeking God for whom to vote. Begin to pray now about the coming elections. Whether it’s the county elections or the presidential election, make them a part of every prayer you pray…. Thank God for giving you His wisdom about what to say or when to say it to others about voting. We do have registration forms in the church office, if you need to register.2) Hurricane Matthew – It is so incredible to think of 1,000 lives lost in Haiti due to Hurricane Matthew – not to mention the loss and devastation to Cuba, the Bahamas and to parts of the United States. The need is overwhelming. What can we do? Week of Compassion is the relief and refugee mission fund of our denomination. On their website, they shared these words: Already, solidarity grants are on their way to partners in the region providing immediate needs, including food, shelter, and safety. The UCC and Disciples are also poised to respond with other churches to provide water, containers, roofs, mattresses, hygiene kits, and psychosocial support. Within the United States, both denominations are active in local and national disaster response networks.Your generosity to this disaster appeal will enable our churches to expand these responses and to walk closely with our neighbors now, in the immediate crisis, and through the long-term recovery process that will follow. The health kits we have been collecting this month will be mailed this week and will definitely help those in crisis. You can also help by giving to Week of Compassion at www.weekofcompassion.org or by mailing a check, designated for Hurricane Matthew, to: P.O. Box P.O. Box 1986 Indianapolis, IN 46206.

There are so many more things we can do. God, open our eyes to opportunities!Pastor MJ
