chaiROur National Chemistry Week efforts went over very well. I want to thank Linda Youmans-McDonald for her efforts in organizing events as well as all of the volunteers who helped out. We had over 2500 visit the booth during SEED (Science Education Enrichment Day) and were named in several media outlets.

This will be our last newsletter for 2010. I would like to thank all of the people who have helped make this a successful year. I would also like to congratulate the winners from the election.

Second, ACS determined that it could no longer legally main-tain investment accounts for its local sections. Thus, the ACS Invest-ment Pool was closed at the end of August, and our Section’s money in the amount of $40,879.84 has been transferred to our Wells Fargo busi-ness savings account.

R l o c A l n e w sACS Project SEEDProject SEED is the ACS program that places economically disadvan-taged high school students in aca-demic, industrial, and governmental research laboratories for eight-to-ten weeks during the summer. For 43 years, Project SEED has helped high school students expand their educa-tion and career outlooks and pro-vide opportunities for students who historicallylackexposuretoscientificcareers.

Project SEED offers two research op-portunities:

•TheSummerIprogramwillprovidefirst-timeparticipants(risingjuniorsand seniors) a fellowship award of $2,500.

•Thesecond-yearprogram,Sum-mer II, provides Project SEED Summer I students with an additional summerofscientificresearch, andthese students will receive a fellow-ship award of $3,000. Additionally, Summer II students will be eligible for a travel grant of up to $100 to pres-ent their research at an ACS or other scientificmeeting, contingentontheavailability of funds.

Eachstudentdoesascientificre-search project in chemistry or related fieldunderthedirectsupervisionofascientist/mentor. The students must be economically

disadvantaged, must be enrolled in high school and must have taken one year of high school chemistry.

Although the researchers/mentors receivenofinancialremunerationfrom the ACS, chemists and chemis-try departments are willing to par-ticipate in the Project SEED experi-ence. Their willingness is derived from SEED’s positive aspects in terms of developing an understand-ing in young people from diverse cul-tural backgrounds, the enthusiasm a young student brings to the research group, and the opportunity to serve the community in which their institu-tion is located.

If anyone in ACS-SR is interested in sponsoring a student, or growing this program, please contact Tad White-side ([email protected]) for further information.

childRen leaRn ScaRy halloween chemiStRy foR national chemiStRy weekChildren of any age look forward to Halloween as a night of scary costumes and masks. What better time is there to sponsor this year’s theme of “Behind the Scenes with Chemistry” - Celebrating the chemistry in movies, movie set design, makeup artistry, and common special effects?

And what’s better at Halloween than learning how to make and apply “fake skin” and “fake blood”.

Trey Shaffer, with the help of his mom Amy Shaffer, applies a mixture of Vaseline, cornstarch and cocoa (fake skin) to his forearm. Then they dribbled a solution of light corn syrup and red food coloring (fake blood) into grooves in the fake skin. “This is really cool,” said Trey. “All you have to do now is fall on the ground, start to yell and hold your arm, and you can really gross people out.” Amy stood back and shook her head in semi-approval.

Hands-on science “makeup” experiments continued throughout the day for area children during this year’s celebration of National Chemistry Week, Oct. 23. The

event, held at the Western Carolina State Fair, the Georgia-Carolina State Fair, and at SEED at USC-Aiken, is an outreach program hosted by the Savannah River section of the American Chemical Society, theworld’slargestscientificsociety. Using common household “chemicals”, children experienced the look and feel of real make-up that has the appearance of lumps of skin with bleeding scars, stitches, and an occasional worm. The activities were planned to demonstrate concepts in chemistry, which can explain the mystery behind the “magic” that is showninfilms.

National Chemistry Week is designed to diminish the term “magic” associated with the “unexplainable” and direct attention to the chemistry that makes special effects work.

StudentS win 2010 national chemiStRy week poSteR con-teSt Midland Valley High School stu-dents used their creative talents and designed over 57 posters for the National Chemistry Week poster contest. The theme for 2010 was “Behind the Scenes with Chemistry” - Celebrating the chemistry in movies, movie set design, makeup artistry, and common special effects. The three winning entries explored chem-istry in movies, set design, makeup and special effects.

So just how is chemistry used in the movie industry?

Lauren Rainwater, 11th grade, won firstplacebycapturingthe2010NCW theme in her poster that cre-atively uses elements from the pe-riodic table to spell out “Chemistry”, and showing how other elements are usedinlightfixturesandmakeup.Avery Morgan Sheehan, 12th grade, won second place by showing a chemical equation used to make synthetic fog for a movie set. Amber Bates, 11th grade, won third place by describing the chemistry of camera filminpictures,wordsandachemi-cal equation,.

The Georgia-Carolina State Fair provided prize money of $10, $7 and $5 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. In ad-dition,LaurenRainwater’sfirstplaceposterautomaticallyqualifiesfortheACS National poster contest.

National Chemistry Week is designed to educate the public about the con-tributions of Chemistry to everyday life and through this effort diminish the term “magic” associated with the “unexplainable” and direct attention to the chemistry that makes special effects work. The activities reached over 3000 students, parents, and teachers this year with our poster contest, SEED, and the Aiken and Augusta Fairs. The Savannah River Section of the American Chemical Society sponsored the event, and the Georgia-Carolina State Fair in Augusta graciously agreed to host the poster contest.
