In the specialist literature, different information can be found regarding the recording date of the song My Love.

The book PAUL McCARTNEY: RECORDING SESSIONS (1969 - 2013) by Luca Perasi mentions ‘October 1972’ as the date of the recording and ‘Abbey Road Studios, London, UK’ as the location of the recording. In the standard work Eight Arms To Hold You - The Solo Beatles Compendium by Chip Madinger and Mark Easter the recording date is stated as ‘March to December 1972’ and the recording location as ‘Morgan Studios’, ‘Olympic Studios’, ‘Trident Studios’, ‘Island Studios’ and ‘EMI Studios’ during the RED ROSE SPEEDWAY sessions.

The source who should know it best is Paul McCartney himself or his production company. In the book enclosed in the Deluxe Edition of the 2018 re-released album RED ROSE SPEEDWAY, issued as part of the ‘Archive Collection’, the recording date is given as January 26, 1972 on page 124. Since details published in the books of the ‘Archive Collection’ were not always accurate in the past this date can only be mentioned here, but can not confirmed.

The Mess (Paul McCartney)

The further processing and adding of additional overdubs to the basic track of the song The Mess, originally recorded live on August 21, 1972 at the Congresgebouw, The Hague, Netherlands was most likely also done during the RED ROSE SPEEDWAY sessions from ‘March to December 1972’ at the ‘Morgan Studios’, ‘Olympic Studios’, ‘Trident Studios’, ‘Island Studios’ and ‘EMI Studios’.

Hard to find sheet music published in Spain by ‘EGO Musical S.A.’. It com-prises one single gatefold page with a page size of 28.2 x 22.0 cm. The photo shown at the first page was taken during Paul´s appearance on the German TV show ‘Wetten, dass..?’ on December 20th 1987. The origin release date of this sheet music isn´t known.

COMMENT:Regular issue from Portugal. The record is available with a couple of slightly different label- and sleeve variations. The catalogue number on the back of the sleeve of this pressing starts with ‘8E’ and ends with ‘MF’, a printers logo is located on the bottom right of the rear. The paper of the sleeve is slightly tex-tured on all variations and the name ‘McCartney’ is written incorrectly as ‘MAcCARTNEY’; Copyright informa-tion variation 1 on the back.

This is the first McCartney/Wings single without the ‘(I)’ prefix in the catalogue number, big ‘℗’ on both labels and additional spacing between ‘An’ and ‘E.M.I.’. Very interestingly this record has the number ‘7XCE’ on the label, which should indicate a mono release. However, the matrix number is “7YCE” and is actually a stereo pressing!

KOMMENTAR:Sehr schwer zu findende Veröffent-lichung aus Irland mit Apple-Labeln und mit schwarzem Apple-Lochcover. Zum ersten Mal ist die Katalognummer ohne den „(I)“-Prefix, Labelaufdruck mit großem „℗” auf beiden Labeln sowie einem zusätzlichen Zwischenraum zwi-schen „An“ und „E.M.I.“. COMMENT:Very hard to find demo record. It seems that EMI had some quality problems with the demo record and also the early regular pressings [1973-3/01e] which show some flaking of the label around the centre hole. You can find this demo record from time to time on ebay; several copies sold in the last years, with prices varying very much between 50 to 470 Euros!

KOMMENTAR:Sehr schwer zu findende Demo-Pressung. Sowohl bei der Demo- als auch der regulären Pressung [1973-3/01e] scheint es anfäng-lich Qualitätsprobleme mit sich teils ablösenden Labeln rund um das Mittelloch gegeben zu haben. Von Zeit zu Zeit kann man diese Demo-Pressung durchaus bei ebay finden; die Preise variieren hierbei teilweise jedoch sehr stark zwischen 50 bis zu 470 Euro!
