speaking.

“Speechcraft eventsare designed tointroduce guestsand the generalpublic to the Toast-master’s organiza-tion in a non-traditional setting,”said Hardwick, VicePresident, PublicRelations. “We

pick a venue outside of our club envi-ronment, include a few componentsof a club meeting like our Jokemasterand a humorous speech, and top it offwith refreshments or a light meal andjust generally make the evening lots of

fun,” continued Hardwick.

The next installment in theWeatherford Toastmasters Speech-craft Series, “Taste of Toastmasters”

series will be held summer of 2009.

Hodson’s speech, “Faith and Begor-rah, the Luck of the Irish” gave hu-mor to the problem of calling uponthe wrong “saint” when one’s life ishanging on the balance. Freeman’spresentation titled, “The Answer tothe Question,” painted a visual pic-ture of her life in Hawaii and howthe tradition of the Hawaiian lepre-

chaun has evolved.

The celebration was lead by Toast-master Pam Hardwick, who sprin-kled the evening with Leprechaunvisits and a game of “ TRUTH ORBLARNEY.” Club member, Jim Au-det, an audience participant selectedby Hardwick, kept things movingwith probing questions and lively

banter.

John Payne, Club Treasurer and a 21-year Toastmasters member, keptthe St. Patrick’s Day theme in fullswing as Table Topics Master. Hisquestions on “What is Blarney?” and“Have You Ever Seen a Leprechaun?”were posed to members and guests

alike.

Public Relations Skills, Parts 5 and 6: Value, adaptability

Tom Merrit, DTM, is the VP Pub-lic Relations for Wichita FallsToastmasters. His article on pub-lic relations offers an in-depthlook at some “must-have” skillsthat could benefit us all. This is

the final installment.

Vision and passion are vitalskills in the arena of publicrelations. The third skill, effec-tive communication, is equallycrucial, as is a solid mentoring

process.

Fifth is the desire and talent forendearing your organization tothose you come in contact withthe most often. By this I mean

creating value.

What is the first thing thatcomes to mind when yourorganizations name is men-

tioned in public? It is importantthat each club member knowwhat the others bring to thetable in terms of talent andresources. Many organizationsdo not have a clue as to thevast quantity of resources thatmany of their individual mem-bers can tap into when the

opportunity arises.

Some clubs provide for spaceon a program agenda for sea-soned members to tell some-thing about themselves so thatthe membership can get toknow the individual membersand create a more homoge-nous club atmosphere insteadof social cliques that seem to

permeate many clubs.

Too often the individual andtheir contribution is over-

looked. When each member ismade aware of the assets thatthey bring to the table and itsvalue is recognized and appreci-ated, it builds long lastingfriendships and adds immensevalue to the work of the or-

ganization.

This keeps the reason for beingconstantly in the mind of thepublic and lets them know

“why you do what you do”.

Sixth is adaptability…goodpublic relations often involvesadapting to new and differentsituations in the spur of themoment. This is especially truewhen a new anchor person ishired by the television stationand debuts when you are thespecial guest on the 6 p.m.

news.

Bell Helicopter Toastmasters Club 6810 started the year with 10 members. Knowing we need to grow to becomeDistinguished, we put on an “Open House” with refreshments and name tags. We invited everyone at Bell in theFort Worth area, reaching thousands of employees. Nine took the challenge and attended our meeting. They weregiven an information package that included a Toastmasters magazine, flyers about Toastmasters, list of duties androles of the club officers, and of course a membership form.

Oliver Cozby, the club’s President, opened the meeting on time, led the Pledge of Allegiance, welcomed the visitors andhad the members introduce themselves. He gave an overview of the communication and leadership program, and thenpassed the gavel to Britt Morgan, VP Education to talk about how a meeting is run and how one learns to become a bettercommunicator through the program. He ended his session by having the visitors introduce themselves and asking themwhat motivated them to attend our Open House. All those in attendance pledged to return next week to attend a regular meeting. One signed the dotted line and has al-ready joined. We are confident that at least 5 will join. That is our goal, and what we need to become Distinguished thisyear. If you are a member of a company club, consider putting on an Open House to invite other employee to meet you andlearn more about our wonderful Toastmasters program. Call Oliver Cozby at 817-280-3459 for more information.

April showers bring May flowers, as well as the conclusion of the spring contest season. This has truly been awonderful season and I applaud you for your efforts in making it a huge success! The D25 Spring Conference isupon us on May 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Remember to discuss the Conference at any opportunity and encourage your

members to attend. It is an amazing experience with a lifetime of memories.

As I criss-crossed the District this contest season, I met many new and enthusiastic Toastmasters with tales ofhow modern technology brings loads of visitors to clubs. With the incorporation of more websites and distribu-tion of club newsletters, members are joining our district like never before. I strongly encourage you to update

your websites regularly with the correct meeting time, location, and contact information.

This month’s PR tip is very easy to do. Get your club’s meeting information into the community calendar ofyour local newspaper. Whether distributed in hard copy or on the Internet, this is an easy way to spread theword to your community. If you are a corporate club, get into your company’s newsletter or intranet publica-tions. Newspapers love special interest stories, so a special meeting or anniversary celebration may get pub-

lished. Should you need assistance finding contacts for your local paper please feel free to ask me.

Remember that District 25 will host a booth at the FW Entrepreneurial Fair from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at theFW Convention Center on Wednesday April 22. If you have an hour or two to volunteer to staff the booth, please contact me to reserve your time slot. Your help in spreading the word about Toastmasters will be greatly

appreciated.

those that provided facility for AreaContests. We couldn’t do this with-

out you.

I could write a book about the con-testants, Area Governors, contestchairs, judges, helpers and guests. Iknow that each person involved in thecontest process truly unlocked their

potential and grew as Toastmasters.

Even though numbers definitely don’ttell the entire story, here are a few ofthe statistics: 161 contestants, 84clubs participating in at least one con-test, 5 areas had all their clubs com-peting in at least one contest (Areas11, 14, 31, 32, 54) with Area 54 hav-ing someone from each club in both

contests.

I wish each and every contestant thebest as they move to Division compe-tition and those winners to District atour District 25 Conference on May 1-

2. Hope to see each of you there.

A Quarter-Century of Excellence: Denton Toastmasters Celebrates 25 Years

On December 8, 2008, Denton Toast-masters Club # 3055 celebrated its 25th

anniversary. The Wise County Toast-masters Club, Decatur, Texas, charteredDenton Toastmasters in 1983. Bill Haas,DTM, Past District 25 Governor (1987-1988) was instrumental in formingDenton Toastmasters and served as aclub mentor while a member of WiseCounty Toastmasters. Calvin and Lori

Williamson were the two club sponsors.During its twenty-five year term, DentonToastmasters has met at a variety of lo-cations. First at the Wyatt’s cafeteria(1983-1990), Denton Water departmenton Mingo Road (1990-1992), ChuckWagon barbecue (1992-1993), and finallylocated at the Lake Forest Good Samari-tan Retirement Village beginning in 1993.We continue to meet at this retirement

village.Lists of Club Presidents are as follows:Robert Lee, Terry Brantley, VinceBaugher, Maria Dycha, Ron Clark, DTM;Bill Kincaid, Robin Barnhart, Abe Birn-baum, DTM; Scott Lebsack, and Jeff Mon-schke. Some served more than once, butall served the club in an outstanding man-

ner.A total of six Denton members served asan Area governor. They were RobertLee, Alexis Sutterfield, DTM; Abe Birn-baum, DTM; Cheryl Spooner, Jeanie Chil-

ton, DTM, and Gary Samuelson, DTM.Our club has earned seven straight Presi-dent’s Distinguished Club awards, andlacks two goals to achieve its eighth

President’s Distinguished Club award.Kim Lee, DTM was a Club Specialist from

1994-2001. In addition, Kim Lee earned

the best Vice President Officer award for

District 25 (July – December, 2003).

Denton reached 20 members in 2001,received 10 new members in two weeks

and has never been below 20 since. In 2004, Ron Clark, DTM was selected asthe club president. He worked effec-tively with his officers to create 15 majorclub goals. The club created a visionstatement to create a climate that al-lows each member to experience allthey can from Toastmasters by havingfun, sharing experience with others, andcompleting their personal goals. Specific

goals included the following:

Denton Toastmasters had up to 8DTMs at the same time; today they have6 as follows: Kim Lee, Ron Clark,George Wheeler, Alexis Sutterfield,

Gary Samuelson, and Rex Davenport. The club has created five straight YouthLeadership Programs. Feedback fromClydette Hanes, head of the Denton’sCounty 4-H group, indicates thatDenton has developed a “bad” reputa-tion. Their Youth Leadership studentsalways win Denton County speech con-tests. An article by Ron Clark was pub-lished in the May 2007 Toastmastersmagazine for Teaching PresentationSkills to Kids. Denton is working toestablish a Gavel Club for its youth lead-

ership students. Not bragging, but this is a positive ex-ample of what a club can do if theywork together. The club meets everyMonday night from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. atthe Lake Forest Good Samaritan Village.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Through weekly meetings and participation in Toastmasters, I am continuallyreminded that the sharing of stories and experiences serves to bring us all notonly closer to each other, but to our common goal of personal develop-ment. While I am still a true novice at speaking in front of others, I have seen

that perseverance pays big rewards.

One of my favorite resources, 'God's Little Devotional Book for Men', says it best:

Perseverance is a great element of success; if you only knock long enough and loud enough atthe gate you are sure to wake up somebody.

I have witnessed that already through the thoughtful and many times passionate stories shared in the weeklyclub meetings. There are many "outstanding" individuals in our group who through perseverance have blos-somed into shining examples of success!
