In the summer of 2007, a small group of dachshund owners got together to plan an afternoon outing on Cape Cod, where we could celebrate our beloved breed with other dachshund owners and friends. We also wanted to do something to help those dogs not fortunate enough to have loving families of their own. One of our planning committee members had recently adopted Maggie Mae, a blind 14-year old mini dachshund, from Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue (CCDR), and suggested that any funds we raised from our event be given to that group. The rest, as they say, is history! From our humble beginnings on Chapin Beach in Dennis, where we battled everything from lack of parking to blowing sand and flying auction bid sheets, Cape Cod Doxie Day quickly grew to require a larger and easier-to-get-to venue for our event. After a year at Drummer Boy Park in Brewster, we decided to move to the Cape Cod Fairgrounds in East Falmouth. The Fairgrounds is easy to get to, has plenty of parking, and best of all – a large building that enables us to hold our event rain or shine. Although we’ve been very fortunate with the weather over the years, last year that building was worth its weight in gold when we held Doxie Day during a downpour!
This year we’re celebrating our 10th anniversary, or as we like to say, we’re now “10 Years Long!” That’s an entire decade of helping Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue find loving forever homes for dachshunds and dachshund mixes in need, regardless of age or health condition. We couldn’t help CCDR continue their lifesaving work without our volunteers and the generosity of the businesses and individuals that support us with sponsorships, donations of merchandise for our silent auction, and purchases of advertising space in our program books. Our guests join the mission to save dachshunds by attending Cape Cod Doxie Day, and participating in our contests, Doxie Dash fun run, and red carpet canine fashion show, or by picking up some of the great T-shirts and other items available for a donation.

Tiny miniature dachshund Maggie Mae, no longer wanted by her Ohio owners after she went blind at age 13, was picked up by her new forever family on a snowy evening in February 2007, and was soon on her way to living the good life on Cape Cod. Maggie Mae participated in three “Fashion For Compassion” fundraisers on Nantucket Island and also had cameo appearances on Plum TV, NECN, and Animal Planet. She was never seen in public without her trademark string of pearls. Tiny Maggie passed away peacefully in her mom’s loving arms in July of 2011. She was the perfect poster dog for senior/special-needs adoptions.Maggie’s Closet offers the perfect mix of “something old and something new” for everyone, all available for a donation. The Inspiration behind Maggie’s ClosetA CCDR Success Story
Bryar, sweet Bryar, a smooth red-coated miniature doxie came to our family by way of Missouri. He and his brother Thorn had been abandoned in the basement of a home when the local rescue organization found them, cared for them and found them homes. We adopted him from his foster family in Massachusetts.Bryar loved to run in the yard, chase squirrels, bark, bark, bark, ride in the car and roll in stink and of course sit in our laps. One day my husband found Bryar couldn’t move, the vet told us to take our sweet boy to the animal hospital immediately. he had ruptured a disc in his back. On that day Stephanie Kube, DVM, DACVIM worked her magic in the operating room and Jackie Levy, CVT, followed up with weeks of medical care and movement therapy with Bryar. His recovery took a long time but with the help of Dr. Kube and Ms. Levy, Bryar recovered. It was a joy to watch him run after a squirrel, roll in the grass on a sunny day and return to his mischievous ways. Miracles do happen!

Chester’sSuccess Story
Chester was brought to the shelter on Christmas Eve because the owners did not have time for him anymore. Chester failed Shelter 101, so they called Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue to help find him a (hopefully) forever home. We were looking for a companion to play with our dog Happy and found the c2cdr.org website. Chester's story seemed so sad so we piled in the car and drove up to meet him. Chester came out of the house barking his head off and he did not seem to be very happy that we are visiting. My first impression was to run. Fast. He needed work, but with patience and love he became part of our family. He continued to pull on his leash and bark. And bark. But he loved his red ball and he would play fetch as long as my arm held out throwing the ball!Chester is now 15 years old and has developed some health challenges, but still loves burrowing under the covers and going for short jaunts in his wheelchair and he has his own little buggy where he is rolled around like the little prince that he is. You might find Chester here at Doxie Day this year. He will probably bark at you and your dogs. Just listen and you'll find him. He is a very special boy though because he brought rescue into his Mom's life and now his Mom helps rescue dachshunds with Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue and helps out with Doxie Day every year.
