    @like facts.

But its a sentiment a lot ofothers dont seem to share,

especially those who attendedlast weeks Southern Republican

    Leadership Conference.Headlining the event was

Sarah Palin, in all her maver-icky glory. There had been someconcern that the former gov-ernor would have to cancel herappearance because the humidair of New Orleans threatenedto smudge the talking points shehad scribbled on her hands, ren-dering her practically mute.

But a permanent markersaved the day. Armed with herusual retinue of trite sayingsand fortune cookie wisdom, Pal-in managed to deliver a dazzling and remarkably fact-free cri-tique of the Obama presidencythus far. The crowd loved everyminute of it, but I couldnt getpast how Palin casually set asidelarge chunks of recent politicalhistory, or else modified them tosuit her own purposes.

I found myself jotting down not on my hand, mind you, buton a spare bit of paper all thethings she said that were just

plain wrong. And there wereplenty of them.

About half-way through herspeech, Palin called the con-flict between Israel and Pales-tine a minor zoning issue, onethat Obama had escalated into amajor incident. But this absurdsimplification makes it soundlike peace in the West Bankcould be achieved withnothing more than a

handful of Centu-ry 21 agents. Thefact is that Israelsplan to expandsettlements intothe occupied ter-ritory of EastJerusalem under-mines ongoingpeace talksand makesany hopeof a two-state solu-tion seemeven more distant.

    Hardly a minor zon-ing issue.

Palin then spent a lot oftime criticizing Obamas energypolicy. She repeated her folksyslogan of Drill, baby, drill! butthis time expanded it to include,Not stall, baby, stall! To build

credibility, she flashed her cre-dentials as the Chairwoman ofthe Alaska Oil and Gas Con-servation Commission anoth-

er position she quit halfwaythrough. She then went on to saythat Obama wasnt doing enoughwhen it came to securing domes-tic sources of energy like oil andnuclear power.

I assume shes just being dis-honest at this point, because any-body who has paid any attention

to the news over thepast several weeksknows this is not

true. In Febru-ary, Obamacommitted $8.3billion in feder-al loans for theconstructionof the first newnuclear reac-tor in more thanthree decades. He recently

    overturned the20-year moratori-

um on offshore drill-ing. And thats notto mention the $70

billion or so in tax andspending provisions set

aside for energy-related pro-grams in the stimulus package.

Its dishonest, or at the veryleast woefully ignorant, to saythat President Obama has beenneglecting the issue of energy

reform. The cynical part of me says

none of this should come as asurprise. Palin has never let

reality or facts get in the way ofher political ambitions before. In fact, part of her charm andmuch of her meteoric rise ontothe national stage has comefrom the irony she wraps her-self in.

Think about it.This is a woman who has

spent two years complainingabout the establishment, afterlosing her bid to become sec-

ond-in-command of the largestestablishment in the world. Sheconstantly lashes out against themainstream media, but is nowa correspondent for Americaslargest cable news network. Andshe mocks President Obamafor being a part-time Sena-tor, even though she did notcomplete her last term in officeeither.

I suppose the only differenceis that Obama got promoted, while she quit.

If Palins speech at the South-ern Republican Leadership Con-ference is any indication of whatlies ahead, then were in for afrustrating lead-up to the mid-term elections, full of spin andlies. The best way to combat thisis to have an informed populacethat values facts over sound-bites, reality over spin, and truth

    over lies.Because facts matter.

The best way to learnthe ins-and-outs of fit-ness and nutrition is

to speak with people thatwork in the field.I know this seems kind of

obvious, but Ive learned 10times more from speakingwith nutritionists, food sci-entists, trainers and formerbodybuilders than I picked upfrom eight years of readingpopular magazines like Mus-cle & Fitness and Flex.

Last week, I was fortu-nate enough to meet Dar-nell Coxe, the owner ofiPower/Nutrition at work inChampaign.

The store is located inRoosevelt Plaza on the cor-ner of Neil and Healeystreets in Champaign.

Coxe was raised in Cham-paign and took an inter-est in fitness after graduat-ing from Centennial High

    School.He majored in architec-

tural engineering in col-lege, but eventually decid-ed to obtain both personaltraining and nutritionistlicenses.

Coxe eventually openedup his own business in2001.

He and I sat down for abrief interview, where I gotto learn more about one ofthe C-Us best-kept fitnesssecrets.

    six batters. The right-hander

shut the Redbirds down andfaced a mere 13 batters in four

innings of duty. The sophomorepicked up six strikeouts and thewin, moving her to 15-4 on theseason.

    Monica came in and gave

her best relief performance,Sullivan said. Weve been

wanting our pitchers to focuson being able to do that notjust being aggressive whentheyre the starter but also inrelief and she had her best

    performance.Though the Illini faced a

mini-scare at the hands of theRedbirds, Sullivan said she wasimpressed with the way theteam closed the interstate show-down: We just took control of

the second half of the game a ndwe feel happy about that.

Two pitches later, he blasted atwo-run home run to left field.

In the end, it all added up toa 10-1 win for the Illini (14-13)over the Panthers (9-22) at Illi-nois Field.

After giving up first-inningruns in each of their threegames at Iowa last weekend, the Illini knew they needed toget off to a better start.

They did just that behindManson and Argo.

Manson shut down the Pan-thers offense, allowing one hitand facing the minimum num-

ber of batters before leavingprior to the fourth.

    Although he went just three

innings and not the typical fiverequired of a starter to pick upa win, Manson earned the victo-ry, as official scorekeepers areallowed to awardsuch wins in collegebaseball if the orig-inal plan is for thestarter to only go afew innings.

I kind of sur-prised myselfthere, Manson saidof throwing just oneball. I tried to workahead and throwstrikes ... just exe-cute my pitch.

Argo ignited theIllini offense, singling to lead

off the game and immediatelystealing second before scoringon an RBI groundout.

With his second-inning RBIdouble, Argo gave the Illini a4-0 lead and collected his 100thcareer hit. He finished 2-for-3

    with three runs.Its pretty cool,

its a great honor,Argo said of tyingthe school record.A lot of good play-ers have comethrough here.

Josh Parr was 2-for-3 with two runson the night, andMike Giller scoredtwice.

    Johnson hadthree RBIs, with

    his homer highlighting a three-

run fifth, and the Illini addedthree tallies in the sixth.

    But the early offense would

be all the Illini pitching staffwould need.

After Manson left, fourrelievers combined to finish theeight-hitter.

EIUs only run came in thefifth, when Alex Gee doubled tolead off the inning and scoredon a Cam Strang single.

Head coach Dan Hartleb waspleased not only with Mansonbut his entire pitching staff.

I was impressed with Kev-in, Hartleb said. Hes capableof doing that.

I thought we were ahead inthe count a lot. Even when theyhad base runners we found away to get some ground ballsand shut them down. We were

down in the zone a lot tonightand ahead in the count a lot,Hartleb added.
