The David Jackson Trophy In 1978, Lindsay Dettman, of Australia, was a speaker at the annual convention. Col. Dettman returned his $65 registration fee from the Columbus Convention and asked that an award be offered at National shows in honor of Alister Clark. Originally called the Australian Award, the name was changed in the fall of 2015 to The David Jackson Trophy. The Board accepted his offer with thanks, and agreed that the award would go to a collection of five cultivars bred in Australia. The original award, a Revere bowl, has been retired and replaced with a carved wooden bowl which was presented to the ADS by David Jackson in 1998. Alister Clark was a prominent Australian hybridizer in the first half of the 20th century, as was Col. Dettman. David Jackson is the third generation of his family to breed daffodils in Australia. Grant and Amy Mitsch Trophy

In 1978, the Board of Directors approved adistinguished award for the best three-stem exhibit ofan unnamed seedling standard daffodil shown by theraiser in the National show. This award isdistinguished by honoring America’s greatest daffodilhybridizer. Mr. Mitsch believed that a “maiden”bloom of a seedling might not show the true worth ofthe seedling. An exhibit of three stems would givemore convincing evidence of what the cultivar hasdone over a period of several years. Dr. and Mrs. TomThrockmorton asked for the privilege of giving theaward, which Mrs. Marie Bozievich created. Shechose the silver chalice design because of the devoutapproach to life of both Grant and Amy Mitsch.

Little England - Larry Mains Trophy

At the 1971 Fall Board Meeting, the Board ofDirectors accepted the gift of a Cartier silvertray from Mrs. Theodore Pratt, of LittleEngland Daffodil Farm in Virginia, in memoryof Larry P. Mains. The Award is for acollection of three stems each of nine cultivarsof standard daffodils from Division 3.

Larry Mains served as chairman of thePhotography Committee for many years, andhis slides are still in the ADS Slide Archives.Although he did not enter flowers incompetition, he often lent a hand at local

shows, and staged educational exhibits. His beautiful displays, neatly labeled, of thefinest varieties, must have inspired many to try newer and better daffodils. Hisphotographic records continue to educate us.

While still in his teen years, Harry exhibited and won awards in the GardenClub of Virginia daffodil shows.

From 1959 until 1969 Harry collected and tabulated the findings and opinions of othergrowers in the form of an annual symposium. This, and his annual “Accent on Novelties,” waspublished in The Daffodil Journal, and read by many novice daffodil growers.

He was the recipient of the ADS Silver Medal in 1968, and though he had stoppedexhibiting years earlier, he was the first winner of the Carey Quinn Gold Medal in 1969 shortlybefore his untimely death at age 39 of heart failure.
