Since the 2016 Olympics, no other event has made more waves in
Hamburg than the G20 Summit. But there is a remarkable in-congruence between the
heated pro tests and the lack of debate on substantive issues. These are as plentiful as they are vital for the well-being of our world: international finance, terrorism, climate change, jobs lost to both globalization and digitalization.
As industrial value chains span the globe, trade and foreign investment have unleashed tre-mendous growth since the 1970s. Yet opposition and hostility to globalization have been growing, as well. Trade agreements are being threatened or dismantled. Protectionism is soaring – against imports as well as immigrants. Evidently, no country can solve these problems by itself.
Our conference “The Dawning of a New World Order? Germany’s G20 Presidency – Partnership in Times of Change” addresses all these issues – from energy to
climate change, from financial reform to global trade. Do we need new trade regimes? How much internationalism can we afford, and how can we tame the forces of nationalism? We need to stem the causes of flight – war and hunger – while minimizing the human toll on refugees.
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the discussions, lectures and one-on-ones dealing with this vast agenda. The audience will en-compass 300 invited guests here in Hamburg, plus many, many more via DIE ZEIT’s online channels. We look forward to lively debates among prominent experts from politics, economics, science and the wider culture. We hope that our esteemed guests will participate just as enthusiastically.
A warm welcome to all!
