Almighty God our Father, your generous goodness comes to us new every day. By the work of your Spirit lead us to acknowledge your goodness, give thanks for your benefits, and serve you in willing obedience; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Celebration of God’s Word and Song Welcome to worship. We gather this day for our Day of Pentecost worship service with each other of other denominations. It is hoped that our time together will provide us opportunity to join in common prayer and with familiar song. As we pray together, proclaim God’s Word, and join our voices in song, we are one in worship. In the name of Christ, we gather in celebration and thanks for the abundance of God’s blessings. About this Service Our celebration today commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, fifty days after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In the year of our Lord’s crucifixion and resurrection that date was also fifty days after Passover and therefore coincided with the Jewish feast of Pentecost (literally “Five Weeks” after—Exodus 34:22; Deuteronomy 16:10) called the Feast of Weeks or Shavuot. Shavuot was originally an agricultural festival giving thanks for the “first fruits” of the early spring harvest (Lev 23; Exodus 23, 34). By the early New Testament period, the Feast of Weeks had lost its agricultural association for the Jewish people. It had become a celebration of God’s creation of God’s people and the festival of their unique religious history. After the destruction of Jerusalem in AD 70, the festival focused exclusively on God’s gracious gift of the Torah, the Law, on Mount Sinai. As the Christian Feast of Pentecost was celebrated in Apostolic times, it soon became, along with the Great Vigil of Easter a preferred time for the celebration of Holy Baptism. Pentecost represents God’s gracious, enabling presence actively at work among God’s people, calling and enabling us to live out in dynamic ways what we are called to be and do in Jesus Christ. It is a celebration of the history of our salvation and our empowerment to partner with God in it. So it is that the Day of Pentecost is celebrated as the birthday of the Church and with the whole Body of Christ we make a renewed commitment to go where the Spirit blows, to burn with the fire of the Holy Spirit and to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit for ministry at this time and in Christ’s name. Almighty God our Father, your generous goodness comes to us new every day. By the work of your Spirit lead us to acknowledge your goodness, give thanks for your benefits, and serve you

in willing obedience; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Celebration of God’s Word and Song

Welcome to worship. We gather this day for our Day of Pentecost worship service with each

other of other denominations. It is hoped that our time together will provide us opportunity to

join in common prayer and with familiar song. As we pray together, proclaim God’s Word, and

join our voices in song, we are one in worship. In the name of Christ, we gather in celebration

and thanks for the abundance of God’s blessings.

About this Service

Our celebration today commemorates the descent of the Holy

Spirit upon the Apostles, fifty days after the Resurrection of

Jesus Christ. In the year of our Lord’s crucifixion and

resurrection that date was also fifty days after Passover and

therefore coincided with the Jewish feast of Pentecost (literally

“Five Weeks” after—Exodus 34:22; Deuteronomy 16:10)

called the Feast of Weeks or Shavuot. Shavuot was originally

an agricultural festival giving thanks for the “first fruits” of the

early spring harvest (Lev 23; Exodus 23, 34). By the early

New Testament period, the Feast of Weeks had lost its

agricultural association for the Jewish people. It had become

a celebration of God’s creation of God’s people and the festival

of their unique religious history. After the destruction of

Jerusalem in AD 70, the festival focused exclusively on God’s

gracious gift of the Torah, the Law, on Mount Sinai. As the

Christian Feast of Pentecost was celebrated in Apostolic times,

it soon became, along with the Great Vigil of Easter a preferred

time for the celebration of Holy Baptism.

Pentecost represents God’s gracious, enabling presence

actively at work among God’s people, calling and enabling us

to live out in dynamic ways what we are called to be and do in Jesus Christ. It is a celebration of

the history of our salvation and our empowerment to partner with God in it. So it is that the Day

of Pentecost is celebrated as the birthday of the Church and with the whole Body of Christ we

make a renewed commitment to go where the Spirit blows, to burn with the fire of the Holy Spirit

and to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit for ministry at this time and in Christ’s name.

SHORT SCRIPTURE READINGS AND THE RESPONSORIES

In the Beginning Genesis 1:1-3, 5

Leader: In the beginning: Hear the Word of God….In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind

from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. The word of Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God! Bless the Holy One, O my

soul; O God, how excellent is your greatness: All: You are clothed with majesty and splendor. (Psalm 104:1)

The Spirit Guides and Nurtures Nehemiah 9:19-20

Leader: The Spirit guides and nurtures: Hear the Word of God…In your great mercies did not forsake

your people in the wilderness; the pillar of cloud that led them in the way did not leave them by day,

nor the pillar of fire by night that gave them light on the way by which they should go. You gave your

good Spirit to instruct them, and did not withhold your manna from their mouths, and gave them water

for their thirst. All your creatures look to you:

All: And you give them their food in due season. (Psalm 104:28)

A New Heart and a New Spirit Ezekiel 36:26-27

Leader: A new heart and a new spirit: Hear the Word of God…A new heart I will give you, and a

new spirit I will put within you; and I will remove from your body the heart of stone and give you

a heart of flesh. I will put my Spirit within you, and make you follow my statutes and be careful

to observe my ordinances. You send forth your Spirit, and we are created:

All: And so you renew the face of the earth. (Psalm 104:31)

Song “O Day Full of Grace” (VIDEO INSERT)

THE READING ACTS 2:1-21

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from

heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where

they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each

of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the

Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in

Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard

them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all

these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native

language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia,

Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and

visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear

them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one

another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all

who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not

drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken

through the prophet Joel: “‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit

upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see

visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in

those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the

heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be

turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day.

Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’”

L: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people. All: Thanks be to God.

Song “O Breath of Life”

THE PENTECOST READING

Song “Holy Spirit”

There's nothing worth more That could ever come close;

No thing can compare; You're our living hope; Your presence, Lord

I've tasted and seen; Of the sweetest of loves;

Where my heart becomes free; And my shame is undone; Your presence, Lord

Refrain: Holy Spirit, You are welcome here; Come flood this place and fill the atmosphere

Your glory, God, is what our hearts long for; To be overcome by Your presence, Lord

Your presence, Lord

There's nothing worth more; That could ever come close;

No thing can compare; You're our living hope; Your presence, Lord

I've tasted and seen; Of the sweetest of loves;

Where my heart becomes free; And my shame is undone; Your presence, Lord

Refrain

Let us become more aware of Your presence;

Let us experience the glory of Your goodness (Repeat x4)

THE RENEWAL OF BAPTISMAL VOWS

Leader: In our baptism we died with Christ and were buried with him, so that we might rise with him

to a new life within the family of his Church. On this festival day of Pentecost we now renew the

promises made at our baptism, to affirm our allegiance to Christ, our rejection of all that is evil, and

our eager expectation of the gift of the Holy Spirit. So, we use our common confession of faith, our

Apostles’ Creed.

L: Do you believe in God the Father?

All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

L: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

All: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the

Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified,

died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended

into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the

living and the dead.

L: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

All: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the

forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

L: Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the

prayers?

All: I will, with God’s help.

L: Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?

All: I will, with God’s help.

L: Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ?

All: I will, with God’s help.

L: Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself?

All: I will, with God’s help.

L: Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?

All: I will, with God’s help.

L: May Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given us a new birth by water and

the Holy Spirit, and bestowed upon us the forgiveness of sins, keep us in eternal life by his grace, in

Christ Jesus our Lord.

L: My brothers and sisters in Christ: Today we give thankful witness to the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of these who are gathered for worship today…By water and the Spirit, all of you have been

made new creatures in Christ. In the Spirit and within the body of Christ gathered in our separate homes, we still can discover our gifts for ministry, connected with the passion for service that God has placed in each of our hearts.

The Spirit moves in us, and Christ’s living water is ready to flow in your ministries God has called and equipped us to do in our families, community and world. Truly, the Spirit of the Lord is in this place. So, lift up your hearts and hands and voices!

All: We lift them to you, Lord! L: Give thanks to our Triune God! All: Thanks and praise are yours forever!

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One, you have poured out your mercy upon us. You have opened eyes that were blind to the harvest around us. You have opened ears that were deaf to the cries of people who are sick, or poor, or imprisoned. You have opened minds that perceived only what

others were missing to realize the deep giftedness of all people. You have opened hearts that were hardened to your compassion for all your creatures. You have opened hands that are now ready to serve you, laborers into your fields.

All: Blessing and honor and glory are yours, now and forever! L: Come, Holy Spirit! All: Come, Holy Spirit!

Page 6: The Dawson Boyd Ministerial May 31, 2020 · Unlock our minds to embrace all possibility Unleash our hearts so Your justice flows freely. All: O for a thousand tongues to sing sweet

6

L: Fill your servants with grace and truth, with wisdom and strength, with every spiritual gift to engage this ministry in Christ’s name and your power. Come, Holy Spirit!

All: Come, Holy Spirit! Fill us with your love for all people, that we may support all in this ministry you have called us with our prayers, counsel, encouragement, and all things needed that your will be done in all of us and through us. Let your living waters flow! Amen!

SPECIAL MUSIC “COME TO JESUS” THE AGAPE SINGERS SENIOR GIRLS

THE LORD’S PRAYER L: As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray,

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be

done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as

we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us

from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.

Amen.

PENTECOST SENDING “SPIRIT OF GENTLENESS” NO 396 L: Come, Holy Spirit, renew the creation. Send the wind and flame of your transforming life in lift the church in this day. Give wisdom and faith that we may know the great hope to which we are

called. C: Spirit of truth, set us free to emerge as children of God. Open our ears that we may hear the weeping of the world. Open our mouths that we may be a voice for the voiceless,

Open our eyes that we may see your vision of peace and justice. Make us alive with the courage and faith of your prophetic truth.

Congregation sings response: Refrain: Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness calling and free; Spirit,

Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.

You moved on the waters, you called to the deep, Then you coaxed up the mountains from the valleys of sleep;

And over the eons you called to each thing:

Awake from your slumbers and rise on your wings. (Refrain)

L: Spirit of unity, reconcile your people. Give us the wisdom to hold to what we need to be your

church. Give us a vision of your breadth and length and height which challenges our smallness of heart and bring us humbly together. C: Holy Spirit, transform and sanctify us as we take up this task in your name. Give us

the gifts we need to be your church in spirit and in truth.

Congregation sings:

You swept through the desert; you stung with the sand, And you goaded your people with a law and a land;

And when they were blinded with idols and lies,

then you spoke through your prophets to open their eyes. (Refrain) Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness calling and free;

Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.

L: With the sound of the mighty rushing wind, the Spirit of God descends. C: Come from the four winds, O Breath of God, breathe on these dry bones that they may

live! L: Sent from the Father, the Spirit of truth will speak on behalf of Christ.: “I will pour out my Spirit", says the Lord

C: And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. L: You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

Page 7: The Dawson Boyd Ministerial May 31, 2020 · Unlock our minds to embrace all possibility Unleash our hearts so Your justice flows freely. All: O for a thousand tongues to sing sweet

7

Congregation sings: You sang in a stable, you cried from a hill,

Then you whispered in silence when the whole world was still; And down in the city You called once again,

When you blew through your people on the rush of the wind.

(Refrain) Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness calling and free; Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.

L: Today we ask God’s Spirit to fill us, that we may prophesy and dream dreams, and see visions. Touch us with your Holy fire, O God. C: Even now the flames dance above our heads, igniting our spirits so that they blaze

into commitment. Even now the flames are burning into our hearts, animating us, leaving us no peace as individuals until God’s justice and peace fill the earth as the waters fill the seas.

L: Prophets, visionaries, dreamers! We are the Church! God gives us hearts to awaken to God’s wonders and faith to welcome God’s signs of hope around us.

Congregation sings: You call from tomorrow; you break ancient schemes.

From the bondage of sorrow all the captives dream dreams.

Our women see visions, our men clear their eyes. With bold new decisions Your people arise.

(Refrain) Spirit, Spirit of gentleness, blow through the wilderness calling and free; Spirit, Spirit of restlessness, stir me from placidness, wind, wind on the sea.

L: Now send us forth a people, forgiven, healed, renewed; that we may proclaim your love to the world

and continue in the risen life of Christ our Savior. May the Spirit of truth lead you into all truth, giving

you grace to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and to proclaim the wonderful works of God; and the

blessing of the Blessed and Holy Trinity One God, Loving Creator, Living Word and Life-giving Spirit be

among you and remain with you always.

All Amen.

L: Let us bless our God.

All: Praise and Thanks to you!

L: May God, Creator bless us and keep us, may Christ be ever light for our lives, may the Spirit of

Love be our guide and path for all of our days.

All: Amen!

L: Go in peace to love and serve! Praise the Lord from whom all blessings flow! Praise the Lord who sends forth his Spirit! Praise the Lord who renews the face of the earth. Praise the Lord! Praise the

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. All: Amen!
