Sanctus Choir Harold Darke

Presider We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you havemade known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in yourword spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh,Jesus your Son.For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary,to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered usfrom evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”Therefore, Father, according to his command,

All we remember his death,we proclaim his resurrection,we await his coming in glory;

Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable inhim, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, andbring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters;through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of theChurch, and the author of our salvation; by whom, and with whom, and inwhom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever.

Prayer and Laying-on of Hands for HealingWe invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else, or to share in

a prayer of thanksgiving for blessings received, to come to the front of the line to receive the bread andwine. Immediately after receiving, go to the prayer station. Give your first name and in a low voice brieflystate your prayer need. The prayer team will lay hands gently on your shoulders and after a short silence, they will pray quietly for you. While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence — this is a timefor quiet prayer and meditation.

Share the GiftsIf you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without, then you have par-ticipated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If youdesire to know the love of God that overcomes indifference and despair, if you desire the reconcil-

iation that overcomes estrangement and alien ation then you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant. The bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the commoncup. If you wish to dip bread in the wine, extend one hand for a wafer. Both wine and unfermented grapejuice are served, grape juice is administered from the pottery chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available uponrequest in the East alcove.

Sending Out of the DisciplesPrayer after CommunionPresider Loving God,All may we who have received this eucharist

live in the unity of your Holy Spirit, that we may show forth your gifts to all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

DoxologyPresider Glory to God,All whose power, working in us,

can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine.Glory to God from generation to generation,in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

“Ultimately we are hoping and praying that this firstinitiative will be part of advocacy and education andpartnership across our country, leading to real, empowering, and hope-filled transformation in ourrelationship with First Nations’ communities – somany of which are living in Third World conditions.”

In Pikangikum, 430 of the 450 (or 95% of ) homesdo not have clean running water or wastewaterservice. The town has a population of about 2,400people, about half of whom are youth. Severalyears ago, this community made internationalheadlines when a wave of youth suicides gave itwith the highest known per capita suicide rate inthe world.

The Cathedral is joining with individuals andparishes across the country to contribute to anoverall project goal of raising $200,000, to equip10 homes with clean water.

My Spiritual Home

Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver is a place ofspiritual refuge I engage as often as I can. From thefirst time I entered the main body of the church Iknew I was standing on holy ground. When Ilooked up to behold the Christ the King window Iknew I had landed on a safe shore after a journeythrough the wilderness. This is a place where God’sgifts of word, music and sacrament overflow andnurture spirit. It is a place where I have the oppor-tunity to meet and behold God in the faces of oth-ers. It is also a place where I am challenged to goout to the world beyond its doors to love, to liveand to learn.

The Rev. Lois Boxill

I am a Franciscan. This means that I have ninevows that I use to direct my life and actions. Thesenine vows are not easy to obey, or if they were theywould be useless to me. I have found in manychurches that I can satisfy seven or eight of myvows but then I must seek outside of the church tocomplete my task. When I first came into theCathedral and started to examine it I was able tosatisfy my vows in this one place. That is when Iknew that the Cathedral was my home and I wasfree to be a Franciscan.

THE INTRINSIC LINK BETWEEN IMMANENCE AND TRANSCENDENCEChrist Church Cathedral Celtic Cross Artist’s Statement

SAMUEL BATES

Celtic art often draws us in by capturing the deepessence of its subject rather than by directly repre-senting its surface appearance. While I cannot easi-ly describe this mystical quality myself, I can pass onthe words of C.S. Lewis at the end of his novel,Perelandra: in writing of a vast cosmology, he alsowrote one of the best descriptions of the dynamic ofCeltic art that I know.

“Set your eye on one movement and it will lead youthrough all the patterns and it will seem to you the mas-ter movement. But the seeming will be true...There seemsno plan because it is all plan: there seems no centrebecause it is all centre.

The circle is not less round than the sphere, and the sphereis the home and fatherland of circles. Infinite multitudesof circles lie enclosed in every sphere.

In the plan of the Great Dance plans without numberinterlock, and each movement becomes in its season thebreaking into flower of the whole design to which all elsehas been directed. All the patterns link and loop together ...”

I feel privileged to create new work within thisancient and beautiful tradition. Again, the words ofC.S. Lewis best describe what I hoped to embody inthis carving:

“He dwells within the seed of the smallest flower and isnot cramped. Deep Heaven is inside Him who is insidethe seed...Of many points one line; of many lines oneshape; of many senses and thoughts one person: of threepersons, Himself. Blessed be He!”

The central triskel, or three armed spiral, here refersto the Trinity. As the three lines move outward, form ing the rest of the design, it becomes an analo-gy for the Creator’s generation of everything from acontinuous act of sharing His own existence. All

lines begin in the center; all lines lead back to thecenter.

As this continuum of interlocking participatorybeing unfolds, other windows of light are framedand infused with illumination that is a reflection ofthe light (represented by gold leaf ) in the originat-ing core of the design. For these five mirrors or win-dows I first chose the Signs of the Four Evangelists. In Celtic Christian Britain and Ireland, various ren-ditions of these four winged creatures, often calledthe Tetramorph, meaning “the 4 shapes”, a man, alion, an ox, and an eagle, (representing Matthew,Mark, Luke, and John) found their way into manyof the masterpieces of classic Celtic art. I have beenwanting to add my own vision of them to the tradi-tion, and the illuminated mirror roundels of thisnew Celtic Cross presented themselves as their nat-ural habitat.

This combination of imagery is as native to theCeltic tradition (as exemplified by the Book ofKells, where it shows up repeatedly) as a Pieta orCalvary scene would later become to WesternEuropean art in general during the Renaissance. Myinterpretation of this ancient theme is as unique asthe Cross that it completes, with echoes of the shapelanguages used in Gothic stained glass, as well asearly pre-Christian Pictish petroglyphs from theWest Highlands of Scotland. Wings are a constantfeature of the Tetramorph, providing a thread ofcontinuity between the diverse shapes and symbol-izing their collective transcendence.

And I have added another image to the usual four-some: the fifth roundel is the most like a window, since it is presenting a view of the place where thisCeltic cross is actually standing; that is, outside thetransept of Christ Church Cathedral. It is an icon-

like representation of the specific place where thisstone will rest (hopefully for many centuries) andwhere countless people's life journeys will continueto be blessed by the presence of Christ ChurchCathedral.

The seed idea for this uncustomary addition to theusual four signs of the evangelists comes from anoften repeated saying of a venerable priest, Fr.Armand Nigro, SJ, a family friend and one of themost inspired teachers whom I have ever known. He says that "The Land is the fifth Gospel”, refer-ring to the times that he spent in the Holy Land, retracing the steps of Christ, letting the place itselfspeak to him. But I have chosen here to interprethis original aphorism in the broadest sense possible:the transcendent making itself felt and known(immanent) in this specific place. The FourEvangelists would have literally no voice if it were not for places in space and time such as this cathe-dral where the Gospel is proclaimed.

Notice that this new cross is itself represented in itsniche beneath the large transept window. The arch

of the niche is formed by a line that dives into therepresentation of the cathedral out of the surround-ing context of abstraction, an analogy for the linkbetween the visible and invisible aspects of theworld. Within the context of the design, the ideacomes across that the Cross is framed in direct ref-erence to the cosmic and unseen realities that sur-round and uphold the everyday world, but whichonly become immanent and visible with, in, andthrough the Cross. In visual poetry, a Celtic Crosscan itself be seen as the simplest and most vivid linesof a man with a halo.

It has been an honor to make this original artwork, and to be here for its dedication on the hundred andtwenty fifth Pentecost celebrated here in your cathe-dral. Thank you!

We are pleased to make a gift to Christ Church Cathedral ofthis beautifully carved Celtic Cross, created by artist SamBates. We make this gift to the Glory of God, in celebrationof the ministry of Christ Church Cathedral and our mar-riage in the Cathedral more than 53 years ago. It is also tohonour our friend Charles Hillman, whose generosityallowed for the creation of the Hillman Garden, on the westside of the Cathedral where now the Celtic Cross stands.Charles generously gave the Cathedral the funds to createthis space in memory of his wife Winnifred. In giving thisstone we want to express gratitude to Charles for his visionand gift and create, within the Hillman Garden, a space forreflection, meditation and inspiration. On this occasion ourthoughts also go to our shared friends, the extended O’Brienfamily.

The Day of Pentecost | June 8, 201422

Notes from the Priest AssociateJUNE 8, 2014

This Sunday morning is the celebration ofPentecost and we will also be celebrating nine bap-tisms! It really is a celebration! Each of the candi-dates will be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit – what does it mean for us to bebaptized in the Holy Spirit? If this truly happens,do we then all have the power to speak in tongues? Can we suddenly, with the rush of wind have ourtongues loosed so that we can speak?

In baptism we are welcomed into the communityof Christ, full members. I wonder if we mightthink about being baptized by the Spirit as havingthe power within us to speak about out faith, open-ly and unafraid.

Sometimes as members of a mainline, liberal tradi-tion, we worry that if we speak about what webelieve and who we believe in, we might offendsomeone or maybe we worry that we might bejudged or maybe we just think that our own faithis a private matter.

I think that speaking about our faith and how itinforms the decisions we make and where we findnew life through our relationship with JesusChrist, is something that we should be doing. Thatmy faith informs my politics, my belief in environ-mental sustainability, justice for all and that we areall beloved children of God regardless of gender, ethnicity, age or whatever other barriers wehumans might put in place, is something I actual-ly want people to know about me.

This is an important day also in the Jewish tradi-tion: 50 days after the passover is called Shavuotand celebrates the spring harvest and the law givento Moses at Sinai.

Both traditions hold this time as a time to celebratea connection from God to us that should informhow we are in and through our faith.

It’s exciting to celebrate baptisms, to welcome newpeople into this beautiful tradition of ours and it’sexciting to think that part of what we are doingthis Sunday is welcoming the Holy Spirit to comeand hover over us and empower us to have tonguesto speak about what we believe and why.

Come Holy Spirit, Come.
