Dear Parish Family, As is our annual tradition at St. Vincent’s Cathedral, we will be having our Family Festival and Chili Cook-Off on Saturday, October 26, 2019. Over the Years, the name of the event has been Family Festival, Fall Festival, and Family Festival and Chili Cook-Off. But no matter what the name or the theme, it has always been a great time for our parish family, friends, and neighbors to gather for fun, food, and fellowship. Many of you have participated in the chili cook-off for years; many have been chili judges, St. Arnold’s beer con- testants and judges; many have played roles in the background with the planning and execution of Family Festival. For many years, Charles Dowden has been the point person for the event. It is now time for Charles to take a break and turn the coordination over to someone else. Thank you to Cady Thomas for volunteering to be our coordinator for the 2019 Family Festival. However, there is still the need for additional support. We certainly want to be able to continue our annual tradition, but it takes people to help out in any way they can. While we appreciate the many volunteers who have helped out over the years, it’s time to add (not replace) new faces to help out. Without your help, we cannot have a successful Family Festival. So, I’m asking for at least 12 “new Disciples” to step up and help Cady plan and execute our festival. Please contact the Cathedral Office or Cady Thomas at [email protected] to volunteer. David P. UPDATE: SEARCH FOR OUR NEXT DEAN

Dear St. Vincent’s family,

As Senior Warden, I would like to take this opportunity to provide you with a high level update on the state of the Parish, specifically related to the opportunity we face today: the search for and calling of our next Dean. As you know, August 25th will be Dean Reed’s last Sunday at St. Vincent’s in his capacity as Dean. Beginning September 1st, he will be at the Diocesan office as part of his upcoming consecration and transition to his new role as Bishop Coadjutor. There have been many questions about the search process and when it begins and when we will have an interim dean. Bishop Iker will inform me of who that person is; the entire Parish will then be notified, then the Diocese at large. Until that happens, any names being mentioned should just be taken as speculation only.

Once the Cathedral officially has a vacancy (September 1st), we will notify Bishop Iker, according to Canonical proce-dure. At this point, Bishop Iker will begin working with the vestry to determine a feasible timeline to begin the develop-ment of a Parish profile and begin the search process.

Please let me emphasize that the calling of the next Dean of St. Vincent’s will have a defining impact on the life and fu-ture of the Cathedral. As the Cathedral for the Diocese of Ft. Worth, we are in the spotlight, not only in our own Diocese, but in GAFCON, ACNA, and other Anglican provinces throughout the world. It is important that the process of searching for and calling a new Dean take its natural course, and not be rushed. Most importantly, the process must be guided by prayer and by the Holy Spirit. Through this, we are all participants in the process.

At the recommendation of Dean Reed, we have reached out to Fr. Ron McCrary, a Ministry Coach, who specializes in assisting parishes, including some in our own Diocese, in maximizing the effectiveness of the search process. A proposal has been provided by Fr. McCrary to the Vestry. The proposal includes interactions with Vestry, Search Committee, and the Parish as a whole. The Vestry is actively reviewing the proposal and anticipates that it will be approved.

I want each and every one to know that life at St. Vincent’s hasn’t and will not stop. We are not facing a crisis, nor are we in despair. We are St. Vincent’s Cathedral, and we are continuing to renew our faith in Jesus each and every day. We do this by Making Jesus Christ Known In All That We Do! Our Parish family is a wonderful family. We’ve seen many recent ex-amples of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, from an increase in Sunday attendance and generosity for various parish needs, to successful youth mission trips and continued support for our many ministries. We are truly a blessed family!

Most importantly, I ask each of you to pray. Pray for spiritual strength, unity, wisdom, and endurance for those who will be involved in the process. Pray for the Church to wholeheartedly trust in the Lord while searching for a new Dean.

Peace be with you!

David Johnson, Sr. Warden

Looking for Weekday Mass Servers

One of the most important things we do as the Church is gathering together for the worship of Christ in the Holy Eucharist. The Mass is at the center of the Christian life, drawing us near to Jesus and to each other, wherein we offer prayers on behalf of the whole People of God. Because the Mass is so important, St. Vincent's Cathedral celebrates the Eucharist not only on Sundays, but at various times during the week. It is the pious custom of the faithful to take advantage of these additional opportunities for worship as much as possible. Are you interested in becoming a server, to assist at one of these intimate weekday Masses in St. Mary's Chapel? Please fill out the Google Form attached in the link below, or get in touch with Fr. Francis at [email protected] https://forms.gle/YNhdUs2S3jmiecmk7

What Happened to the Kneelers? The kneelers have been returned to the original finishers to be redone. They should be back this fall in time for the Season of Advent. When they return, they will be back at the Altar railing for daily use.

MISSION IN MEXICO

LA GRAN FAMILIA, JULY 2019

The team that went to Cuauhtémoc in July was comprised of three different parishes, one even from another dio-cese! Craig and Julia Lundquist are from Christ the King/All Saints. Katie Hodges, Dean and Barbara Hautanen and Fr. Kalimi are from St. Vincent’s. Debbie Scott, Leandro Valles, and Glenn Polhemus are from Good Shep-herd in San Angelo which is in the Diocese of the South West. This team was a great example of part of Paul’s let-ter in 1 Corinthians 12:12-26 (our 1st daily reading). We were a unit with several parts! Even though the body of Christ encompasses many members with great diversity, every member is equally a part. Two of the members from San Angelo and the six members from Ft. Worth met for the first time the day we left for Cuauhtémoc, yet every-one fulfilled their part in every way. God is good! He picked the team members and prepared the way as He always does.

We spent two days driving and getting to know one another. We arrived at LGF (the casa) Friday afternoon and were met with hugs and kisses from children and LGF employees! Our goal was to paint the inside of the big building between the girls’ house and the boys’ house, of course with the help of youth that live there. Friday after-noon, we Frog Taped the windows, doors, stairs, and computer stations. Saturday, we painted the whole thing! Later, we went to dinner at Pedro’s house. Some of us first met Pedro when he was in high school. He used to help at LGF and was always there to translate when our teams came. He is now a lawyer, married to an interior designer. The just had their 1st baby boy! How time flies!

Sunday, Fr. Kalimi celebrated Eucharist. Then, we removed Frog Tape and drop cloths and cleaned the floor. It looked brand new! That afternoon, we played soccer and basketball with the kids. Later, we took 40 kids and adults to eat pizza and ice cream! Everyone had a wonderful time!

One thing I forgot to mention was about our accommodations! We actually stayed at the casa and ate with the kids. The men had great facilities with plumbing that worked! The women were not so lucky. We improvised by using the men’s and women’s restrooms downstairs! The food was great! God is good always!

The one who offers thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I will show the salvation of God!” Psalm 50:23

Glorifying God through Giving

Our chief purpose in life is to glorify God. We glorify God in how we live our lives, and we also glorify God by giving him our thank offerings or gifts. Gifts given in faith and thankfulness hon-or and please God. Although our giving does not earn anything, it yields the blessings of forgiveness and salvation that have been promised to those who be-lieve and trust in the Lord. It is through faith that we as believers give our gifts of gratitude, and it is by grace that God gives his gracious gifts to us.

In Psalm 50:9-12 we read, “I will not accept a bull from your house or goats from your folds. For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine.” The world and everything in it belongs to God so he has no need of our gifts. However, he has chosen to use us as his channels to others. We are God’s hands, feet, and mouth. Through us, he feeds the hungry, gives water to the thirsty, clothes to the naked, gives shelter to the homeless, and care for the handicapped.

God invites us to join in the work of missions, not because he needs us but because he wants to give us the privilege of working with him. If we choose to ignore God’s invitation, we are the poorer for it. Either with or without us, God’s kingdom will move forward.

When we give our offerings to God through our churches, we need to remember that the only gifts that are pleasing to him are those gifts that are given out of faith and love.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

SUNDAY SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN AND YOUTH WILL BEGIN SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 29TH

We have an excellent Sunday School curriculum taught by St. Vincent's most caring and knowledgeable teachers. If you have children from 4 yrs. old through High School, bring them following the principle service down to the H.Q. for assembly and circle prayer. From there, your children will be taught God's Word through creative and interactive lessons! See you on September 29th!

ST. VINCENT’S YOUTH VISIT PINE RIDGE INDIAN RESERVATION, SOUTH DAKOTA

The youth of St. Vincent’s had the opportunity to visit and help the needs of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. The Pine Ridge Indian Reservation is an Oglala Lakota Native American Reservation, created in 1889. After their time at the reservation, they were able to visit Mount Rushmore National Monument. St. Vincent’s is blessed to have the ability to bring the message of God’s love to those located far from our lives in the suburbs of DFW.

FROM THE VERGER

WHAT DOES THE + MEAN?

So, you’re reading something churchy and all of a sudden there’s a plus (+) sign on the page. What does that mean? Typically, it’s one of three things.

#1 Make the sign of the cross on yourself.

In Roman Catholic, Eastern Or-thodox, and high-church Anglican tradition, making the sign of the cross is a common gesture in the course of prayer and worship. Most often, one crosses oneself when the priest is pronouncing a blessing or absolution, or when the person praying says the triune name of God: “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” The opening acclamation of the modern communion service is typically said with the sign of the cross, as is the beginning of the Gospel Canticles (the Benedictus, the Magnificat, and the Nunc dimittis). If you’re a regular worshiper in a high-church context, you may be able to identify more points in the litur-gy where people do this.

In certain liturgical texts, though not any official Prayer Books, a plus sign (+) or cross is placed alongside or amidst the words to indicate when the

worshiper should cross him-or herself.

#2 The celebrant makes the sign of the cross over something.

During the celebration of a sacrament or sacramen-tal rite, it is traditional for the priest or bishop to make the sign of the cross over the object being blessed or consecrated. When holy water or oils are being blessed, it is customary for the celebrant to make the sign of the cross over those elements also. I’ve seen occasions, wherein people cross them-selves while the celebrant makes the sign of the cross over the object(s) being blessed, and it’s frank-ly a bit comical. There the bishop is, consecrating oil to be used in the anointing of the sick and whatnot, and there’s half the congregation crossing them-selves at the same time! The reader has to be aware of whether the + is meant for the congregation or for just the celebrant. Usually, context is perfectly clear. If nothing else, this is a reminder that one

must always keep one’s brain engaged in the liturgy. “What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also;” (1 Cor. 14:15).

#3 The priest or bishop is conveying a blessing in writing.

When writing a letter (or email, today) a priest or bishop may sign off with a blessing to his recipients by marking a + or † after his name if he’s a priest or before his name if he’s a bishop. As deacons do not pronounce blessings, they do not sign their name in this manner.

This is by far the most misunderstood use of the sign today. It’s frequently used as a name marker in internet communication:

Dear Fred+,

I was talking with +William and James\ about the conduct of a member of our ves-try, and would like your input.

Thanks, Lionel+

The only correct use of the sign is in the signature. Father Fred and Bishop William should just be spelled out; the plus sign is not supposed to be a shorthand for ordination status. Occasionally, peo-ple have even used the \ to denote a Deacon, such as Deacon James in this fictitious example. Yeah, it’s kind of cute, imitating the slant of a deacon’s stole, but it’s also incorrect style. The plus sign or cross with someone’s name in correspondence is meant to be a conferral or wish of blessing on the part of the bishop or priest writing the correspondence. Hence, Father Lionel’s name is the only correct appearance of the + in the example above.

St. Vincent’s Cathedral Financial Summary — June 2019

Keeping Your Commitment

‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’

Matthew 25:21

Please remain faithful to the financial pledge you’ve made to God and this Parish family.

We’re all in this together, and we need your help!

We don’t ask equal giving, but equal sacrifice!

June operating revenue was $13,000 under budget due to below budget pledge payments ($14,000) and below budget mortgage contributions $2,000. Weekly pledge payments went from $5,826 per Sunday to $4,208 per Sunday in June. Pledge payments using on-line giving remained steady for June. Operating revenue was $52,000 over budget due to contributions and unbudgeted fundraising.

What better way to remember a loved one or a special event than to be an Altar flower donor!

Multiple donors are needed each Sunday to meet the expense of the flowers. The calendar is located in the office or you may call the office to be listed on the calendar. Donations are $50 per week, and it takes two donations to cover the weekly cost.

If you were unable to sign up to sponsor weekly Altar flowers at the annual parish meeting, it is not too late. Please contact the Cathedral office to have your name put on the altar flowers schedule.
