The Descendants of Robert Shawhan

(1764-1833)by Ronald T. Shawhan

The Robert Shawhan lineage traces itself back to DARBY SHAWHAN a Scotch-Irish immigrant who arrived in Kent

County, Maryland in about 1698 — he may have come by way of Barbados. We know that he was an illiterate but

industrious farmer, growing tobacco, on land known as “Darby’s Desire”, which was/is located a short distance north-

west of the city of Kennedyville, in Kent County, MD; he and his wife, Sarah Meeks, lie buried on these grounds.

Darby and Sarah were married in the still existing St. Paul’s Church, on November 20, 1707 — that union produced

eight children, including Daniel (1709-177?), the direct ancestor of Robert.

DANIEL SHAWHAN was a farmer and a tanner — i.e. one skilled in such leatherwork as shoe-making. He married

Jennet (last name unknown) and had several children, including Daniel (1738-1791). Daniel, b. 1709, migrated from

Kent County to Frederick County, MD in about 1740, and subsequently to Hampshire County, VA/WV in about 1759.

Along the way he fought in the militia during the French and Indian War and provided ferry service to the defeated

troops of General Braddock as they returned to Maryland, bloodied from the mauling they received at the hands of the

French and their Indian allies when the British tried to capture Ft. Duquesne (Pittsburgh); Braddock himself had been

killed during the action and the surviving troops were saved from total destruction primarily through the efforts of

Colonel George Washington.

DANIEL SHAWHAN(1738-1791) was born in Kent County and migrated with his father westward thru Frederick

County into Hampshire County, VA where he married Margaret Bell in about 1762, near Romney, VA/WV; Margaret,

the daughter of Robert and Agnes (Fleming) Bell, has been described as having “hair like the sunsets, filled with gold

and red.” They had eight children, one of whom was Robert, b. 1764. Daniel, Margaret, and their family, together with

the Bells, migrated, in about 1771, to Allegheny County, PA, in present-day Chartiers Valley, near Carnegie, PA. where

they prospered as farmers and as distillers of fine whiskey. Daniel also served in the Pennsylvania Militia during the

Revolutionary War, as did his son Robert. During the period known as the Whiskey Rebellion, when western Pennsyl-

vania farmers/distillers refused to pay taxes on their spirits, Daniel pulled up stakes and traveled down the Ohio River

to what was then western Virginia, present-day Kentucky. He resumed distilling whiskey, in Bourbon County, KY,

where his secret formula for “bourbon” became known far and wide for its smooth taste; the Shawhan brand of whis-

key continued to be sold through the 1970s. The little town of Shawhan, KY, a still-existing hamlet near Paris, KY, was

established before the Civil War by one of the descendants of this Daniel as a railroad shipping point for the produce,

including whiskey, of the area.

A detailed summary of ROBERT SHAWHAN and his descendants follows.

First Generation

1. Robert SHAWHAN,1 son of Daniel SHAWHAN and Margaret Fry BELL, was born in Hampshire Co., VA/WVA

March 5, 1764. Robert died February 25, 1833 in Allegheny Co., PA, at 68 years of age. He married Mary WILL-

IAMS in Allegheny Co., PA, about 1788. Mary was born July 12, 1766. Mary died 15 Apr 1826 in Allegheny Co., PA.

Robert served during the Rev. War as a Private, Pa. Militia, in Capt. Zadock Wright’s Co., under Lt. John Cannon and

Ensign George Brice. When the rest of the family migrated to the Kentucky District of VA, Robert elected to remain in

Pennsylvania, taking over his father Daniel’s farm. Like many others in western PA, he farmed staples such as rye and

corn, primarily for the eastern markets. Transportation over the mountains, however, was quite difficult and expensive

- - a horse could carry only four bushels of grain. So Robert joined hundreds of others in the area in the distillation of

whiskey — the equivalent of 24 bushels of grain could be converted into two large wooden kegs and loaded across a

horse’s back. A gallon of rye whiskey became a standard bartering medium, as there were few hard pieces of shilling

available. The 1790 Census lists Robert as being in Allegheny Co., PA. In March 1791, the young American Federal

government was desperate for funds and the Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton, pushed thru an excise tax

upon distilled spirits, to be paid in hard money. The resultant uproar among the farmers of western Pa. erupted into

what history calls “The Whiskey Rebellion”. The unrest was finally calmed in 1794, when President Washington

dispatched 13,000 troops under “Light Horse Harry” Lee to western Pa. to quell the rebels. In the interim, however,

federal revenue agents were tarred and feathered or worse, and regular skirmishes occurred in confrontations between

the “Whiskey Boys” and those who were trying to enforce or pay the hated tax; friends became enemies as some

farmers elected to pay the tax while the majority refused to do so. “Pennsylvania Historical Collections”, by Sherman

Day, pub. 1843, in its summary of the “Whiskey Insurrection”, records, “In January 1794, further violence com-

menced. Robert Strawhan (Shawhan), a complying distiller, had his barn burnt”. Robert’s will left his farm to his eldest

son, Daniel, and describes the property as being near Chartiers Creek, adjacent to the lands of John Bell — John Bell

was a member of the same Bell family from which came Margaret Bell, the spouse of Daniel Shawhan, 1738-1791. The

Bells and the Shawhans both migrated to the Chartiers area, from Hampshire Co, VA/WV, probably in the late 1770s.

Many of the critical dates re Robert’s family were taken directly from his Bible which, in 1938, was in the hands of

Margaret Barclay, one of his descendents.

was born in Newburyport, Essex Co., MA October 6, 1788.3 Nathaniel 4 was the son of Jesse Samuel PEARSON and

Mehetable PLUMMER. Nathaniel died September 19, 1869 in Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY, at 80 years of age.

Nathaniel served during the War of 1812 as an Ensign in the “Hunting Shirt Company”, under Captain James Turbett,

1st Regt., PA Militia, Allegheny County. After the War he managed his father’s flour mill in Allegheny County. Key

sources are his 1851 request for bounty land and his widow’s 1873 pension application based on his service during the

War of 1812. The Pittsburgh Gazette of Nov. 8, 1814 listed Nathaniel as the administrator of his father Jesse’s will.

From file of Merry Anne Pierson: “ Still living with Hehetable on 1820 Census. Shows up on 1830 census as Nathaniel

Piercon. Children listed are those enumerated with him on the 1830 census. No wife listed. These could be siblings.

From his pension documents and Samuel Walker Pearson’s letter included with the documents. Lived in Birmingham,

near Pittsburgh until spring of 1869, went to Louisville, KY to be near eldest daughter and a son in glass business; died

there but was returned to Allegheny Co. for burial.” Jane and Nathaniel were married at the home of her father, Robert

Shawhan.

at 54 years of age. Mary may have died during the cholera epidemic which scourged the western part of Pa. in 1849.

The particulars of Oliver’s birth and why he retained the Shawhan name are unknown. Proof of his being the son of

Mary is based on a Record of Deeds in which heirs of Mary convey property to “her son Oliver Shawhan”. (see Boro

of Birmingham, Allegheny Co., PA, Deeds, Vol. 88, pg. 21, Sept. 7, 1849).

Mary SHAWHAN had the following family:

age. During the 1898-1905 time frame, Daniel’s heirs obtained detailed lot maps showing the location of the property

to which they were entitled. The property, encompassing several lots, was located in Scott Twp., Allegheny Co, Pa.;

one set of lots was situated between Bell Avenue and Bent Alley, adjacent to the Pittsburgh, Chartiers, & Youghiogheny

RR. Other lots were off of Shawhan Avenue, near Ridge and Northside Avenues. These were in the vicinity of East

Carnegie, Pa. Daniel and other Shawhans are buried in this same area, in Chartiers Cemetery. Many other Shawhans,

also descendents of Robert, are buried in South Side Cemetery, a short distance east of Carnegie. “The History of

Allegheny County” (1889) states that Daniel owned the property left to him by Robert who in turn received it from his

father, Daniel (1738-1791); it described the property as being near Mount Lebanon Church. The same article identifies

Daniel as being both a farmer and also one engaged in the coal business, having had coal discovered on his land.

served during the atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. One way or another he managed to visit his sister

the fun of hunting frogs and turtles. He lived with his sister Pearl for many years, and is remembered by her grandchil-

dren for the stories he used to tell and the wood toys he made for them. Peach also did a little moonshining on the side,

using old, shut-down mines for his still locations. A family story tells of Peach being approached, in Hepizibah, by a

revenue agent who was trying to trap Peach into selling him some moonshine. As it turned out, Peach was holding a

shoe box with four pints in it; he told the agent that he probably could find four pints for him, and asked for the money

so that he could go off and find some — he asked the revenue agent to hold his “shoes” until he returned — of course

Peach never returned. Eventually Peach was sent to jail for six months in Moundsville, WV, for bootlegging; he worked

in the mines owned by the jail to make the time go faster. He and his nephew Carl used to work in the mines at Zeising

and in the Newman mines at Little Rock Camp.

profit. He also built a little church for his sister Pearl in Little Rock Camp, WV.

41. Marcey Pearl SHAWHAN (William Woodward 74)6 3 was born in Marietta, OH March 16, 1899. Marcey died

January 13, 1996 in Wallace, WV, at 96 years of age. She married John Hager EARNEST in Hepzibah, WV, May 20,

1920. John was born in Becky’s Creek, WV February 2, 1900. John 6 4 was the son of Gorton Christopher EARNEST

and Mary Ellen WORECK. John died November 24, 1950 in Wallace, WV, at 50 years of age. John is remembered by

his children as being a jack-of-all-trades, who would try anything to put food on the table when the coal mines would

close down. He raised a few cattle, chickens, and hogs and operated a saw mill for a time. Though there were nine

children in the family, and occasionally a couple more “strays”, they never went hungry. He died of a heart attack,

during the Thanksgiving, 1950 snow storm, after his car broke down and he had to walk almost 10 miles through the

snow to get home, dying that same night. The name “Earnest” was originally “Ernst” when the family first immigrated

to the US from Germany, probably in the 1700s.

Pearl was the family historian and much of what you see in this lineage was due to her maintenance of the family

Bible and related records. She raised nine children when times were very hard in this coal mining region of West

Virginia and was noted for her firm religious beliefs and for her generosity to one and all. Her children recall her superb

cooking, in all situations, especially the “white gravy, cooked with butter, milk, and occasionally ham leavings, with

homemade bread, cornbread, or biscuits”. For a time, in the 1930s, the family lived in a log house, with three rooms —

“a big room where we kids slept, usually four to a bed, a dining room where Mom and Dad slept, and a long kitchen”.

Sometimes, when guests were present, some of the kids would sleep up in an attic loft, and they remember waking up

to find snow on their bed because it had blown thru the chinks in the logs during the night. They had a “three holer

(outhouse) — two normal size and a smaller one for the babies”. The family had many moves, resulting in Pearl’s

comment that “the chickens got so used to moving that they would roll over and lift their legs to be tied.” Another of her

bits of advice was “As you travel down life’s pathway, no matter what your goal, keep your eye on the doughnut and

not on the hole.” She enjoyed poetry and found great pleasure in the fact that her kin, James Martin Shawhan, of

Marietta, Ohio, had published a book on poems, titled “Unpolished Pebbles”. Her son, Thomas Lowell, built a new

home for her, but she didn’t feel comfortable in it. A busy, active, compassionate person, Pearl cared for the little

cemetery at the top of Trouser Leg Hill; she also made favors to take with her on her once-a-month visits to a local

nursing home, and made a quilt for each new family baby. In addition, she always made an early Sunday morning visit

to light the fires and make sure that everything at her church, the Little Rock Camp Baptist Church, was ready for

services. On top of all of that, Pearl also cooked at the local school, which was attended by many of her children and

grandchildren. It was Pearl who was behind the annual July 4th Shawhan/Earnest reunion, attended by relatives near

and far. Pearl’s home was in the same hollow in which lived many of her children and other kin folk, such as the Powers

family; the house was just below the Baptist Church, which was located at the fork in the road. It wasn’t unusual for

“Mammaw” to have one or more grandkids staying overnight with her. When Pearl passed away in 1996, she left

behind many fond memories and 101 gr-gr-gr-children.

Navy, and subsequently was employed at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard until he retired to a wilderness home he built

at the time the Japs attacked on December 7, 1941 — he happened to be in the base hospital as a result of a barroom

fight that injured his jaw; the Marblehead immediately left the Philippines after the attack, leaving William behind —

the cruiser was subsequently sunk by the Japanese in action off of Indonesia. William was captured by the Japanese

outside the mess hall when the Japanese planes appeared and began strafing the Barracks and the adjoining Wheeler

Air Base. As their weapons were locked in the Armory, there was little defense to be offered. Robert subsequently

served on Guadacanal, where his 155mm howitzer unit, in January 1943, relieved the Marines, who had initially landed

in August of 1942; there he contracted malaria, from which he still suffers. After duty in New Zealand and New

Caledonia, he was returned to the USA to recuperate from his malaria, and was discharged in late 1945. He eventually

Tom briefly worked in civilian life before reenlisting in the Air Force; it was while he was in the Air Force that he

met Bertha, who was giving out uniforms. It was Tom who built a new house for his mother, Pearl, furnishing it with

years. Prior to that he served for four years in the US Navy, as an engineman on an AKA cargo/troop ship, including

transporting USMC forces at the invasion of Inchon, Korea, where there were 40ft tides. John’s wife, Marlene, is

actively involved in Bible studies and became enthused about the use of a PC to assist her in her religious work. The

result was that John initially bought a PC several years ago and since then has himself built seven PCs from kits — for

he and Marlene, for his sister, June, and his grandkids. John shared many stories about his mother and father and the life

they had in the hills and hollows of West Virginia.

Phyllis has been extremely helpful in putting together the dates, names, etc of the Shawhan/Earnest family relation-

ships and in calling to mind many stories involving her Mother, Pearl. One such story, sworn to by the family, is the tale

of the “Angel’s Visit”. This occurred while the family was living in a little cabin in the Laurel Lee mining camp. It was

pouring rain outside, towards dusk, when they heard a knock on the door and Pearl answered it to find outside a little

old man, with white hair, in a blue shirt, and with bright blue eyes — she was surprised to see him completely dry even

though it was raining extremely hard. He explained that he was looking for a place to stay for a short while, had

knocked on several other doors, but had been told that he should come to Pearl’s house to find shelter. He and Pearl

talked about many things while she fixed him some food, discovering that he had been everywhere she had been. He

accepted her offer for him to stay the night, and when she arose early the next morning she called to him to stay in bed

until she got the stove going and fixed some breakfast — he responded affirmatively. There were two doors in the little

cabin, the front door and straight ahead a back door — both doors were easily visible. After she had fixed some

breakfast, Pearl called for the little gentleman to join her, only to discover that he had disappeared — neither she nor the

children had seen him go. In checking with the neighbors, Pearl could find noone who recalled seeing him the night

before. In her mind he was an angel who had decided to visit them, in keeping with her religious faith that you should

never turn away someone at your door because it could be an angel. Phyllis also recalled her Mother’s great cooking,

including the eggs and mushrooms cooked for breakfast, with cornbread — mushrooms picked fresh by her Mother

and carried into the house in her apron. She likewise remembered the yellow cake made with duck eggs. Phyllis is

employed as a florist and her husband, John, is amaintenance man with the Levittsburg, Ohio school system. They are

strong Baptists, true to the roots established during their childhood.

busy developing ways to encourage their grandchildren to learn about family history — through reading books and

other material which relates to family background. In like vein, he has developed a “Grandpa’s Book Report Program”,

featuring a list of more than 2800 books that he uses in contests to prompt the children to become readers and develop

their knowledge of culture and history — e.g. bios, biblical readings, best sellers, youth books, etc; their book reports

result in small financial incentives from grandpa to read further. There have been six grandchildren who participate in

the program — Kelly, Meghan, Leigh Anne, Kerry, Matthew, and Courtney. Also, every year, Wilbur distributes “Pages

of Time”, a kind of “You Are There” approach recapturing births, marriages, local/national news, tornadoes, songs,

temperatures, and other items of interest to the family that occurred during that particular year. “Pages of Time” also

includes a look at a past year in the family’s history — e.g.1852 and what happened to their ancestors at that time —

where they lived, their ages, life styles, etc. Mary has been a telephone operator and a homemaker in Canton, OH. She

and her husband, Wilbur Sanders, have been extremely helpful in researching Shawhan Family history, dating back to
