Welcome to the Devonshire magazine.

What a truly great summer we've had this year! I'm sure you'll agree that it's been outstanding, day after day of

sunshine - there really was no need to travel abroad for a dose of sunshine.

It's great to nip into town when the weather's good for a spot of shopping and perhaps lunch afterwards. Across the region's towns there have been many changes, some shops closing, others opening, hopefully though, the net effect is that our towns remain vibrant places, with interesting shops, great restaurants and pubs. Of course, we can all help by making a conscious effort to buy locally where possible. The money we spend circulates through the community, so ultimately we all benefit and the towns continue to thrive. To this end, we've launched a SHOP LOCAL campaign, a scheme we've devised to gently remind residents that it really helps their local community if they support their town through spending locally. Just a simple concept, but with the threat of the internet

and large retail chains, where your money forever goes out of the community and into hyperspace, it's important to remind people that if they love their town, it needs their support. You'll see these posters in shop windows - incidentally, if you're a business and would like a poster, please email [email protected]

This issue sees us feature Tavistock (p28). If you haven't visited or have, but not recently, it's a great town to spend time at, with many great shops, eateries and galleries - there's also an excellent museum and a walk along the Tavy with free fishing.

Here at the magazine, we're looking for additional display sales assistance - if you have experience in this field, particularly for the North Devon area, please call and ask for Nigel Jones.

If you use the HUB What's On websites, either as an event organiser, or a member of the public, please be aware of major improvements coming later in the year. These comprise of increased functionality, greater ease-of-use and an interface re-skin. We'll also have a content management widget available, so if you already enter events into the HUB for promotion, why not show these same events in your own website simultaneously, with no extra effort? The HUB currently has over 4,500 organisations registered, who use the HUB to promote their events. North Devon and West Devon HUBs are scheduled to be up and running by the end of the year. One of our missions with the HUB is to share data and to this end we provide data feeds to information portals. If you would like event data fed to your website, please call Nigel.

We welcome your letters and emails:[email protected]

Nigel Jones (Editor)

ANYONE FOR ZIDER!As autumn approaches, we all know apples need harvesting. They're such ornamental fruits, particularly at this time of year, as they glow red in the late afternoon sun. It's hard to believe they're not native, it's even harder to believe they're members of the rose family (Rosaceae). No matter, now your appetite's whetted, time for a pint at the Cider Bar at Newton Abbot.

YOUR NEWS TO THE EDITOR - [email protected]

Letterbox

Andre Daniels, the owner of Artisan Homes, has a fl air for creating unique pieces of work.

“At the end of July I was really pleased to launch my new moth collection. Over the many years of making furniture, my signature inlays have become even more life -like and eventually evolved into the

collection I have launched in the last few months. Andre tells me that the response has been overwhelming and in the few month they have been made available to the public they have fl own to every corner of the globe from Canada to Australia and London.

“Each moth is unique and can never be repeated and represents the beauty of nature in both the moth and of British timber used to make them. A full collection can be seen in my showroom in Modbury.”I always maintain that Devon has some of the most creative crafts people in the UK, this certainly goes to prove the point, beautiful and unique pieces of art - Editor.

Unfortunately, there are many unscrupulous publishing companies out there, claiming all sorts of circulation figures for their magazines. My opinion on this is that if the publishers donʼt print or sell what they quote, then itʼs fraudulent! To this end, staff at the Devonshire magazine decided a magazine count was in order, so the Mare & Foal Sanctuary was called in to independently verify our print fi gures. Amy (right) verifi ed 9,800 magazines for the South and West Devon issue, with Mary from the Blind Club at Sidmouth verifying 10,200 for our Exeter,

East and Mid Devon issue which are stored at Tipton St John. We also received over 200 South and West Devon magazines at the offi ce making 20,200 magazines in total. Donations were made to each charity involved in the audit. Incidentally, we also have a print certifi cate from the company that print the Devonshire magazine (formerly Coast & Country), stating that weʼve always printed in excess of 10,000 magazines for each version. No other magazine company provides this level of transparency!A couple of the Devonshire magazineʼs sister publications celebrate their 20th year in July next year - I suppose weʼve been around a long time! Too Long a Secret!New customers to Austins in Newton Abbot usually comment that it’s one of the best kept secrets in the South West.Family owned and run by David Austin, the Managing Director, who’s always available for a complaint or a compliment (thankfully, we don’t get many complaints!)As Store Director (Trevor Boobyer pictured above), my role is to ensure that all departments are a destination, well worth a visit and to ensure a warm welcome. Situated in Newton Abbot, right on the pedestrianised centre, our store has the following departments: Fashion store, Home Store , Furniture Store, Toy Store and Menswear Store, both of the latter now being refurbished to give a complete modern shopping experience, with courtesy a smile and a welcome.

Once you have been you will you will certainly want to return! You can relax in our Coff ee Shop and sample probably one of the best cheese scones you have ever tasted!BREAKING NEWS - Moss Bros has just joined us and Jones the Boot Makers are arriving mid September. When you visit us if you don’t agree with my words, ask for me or David we love to hear from our customers and we do listen. Trevor.Austins is something of an institution, if you haven’t visited, then you’re missing a great shopping experience! - EditorCommunity Spirit

in bucket loads!Since we launched the SHOP LOCAL scheme in mid September, the Devonshire magazine team have been bowled over by the uptake from businesses across the region. All the team at the Devonshire both live and work here in Devon, so we consider it vital to support local businesses, particularly the shopping/retail sector.

I’m sure that you, the reader, agree we don’t want our towns to die, we want vibrant, busy towns full of interesting shops, places to relax for lunch/dinner. If you want to participate in this scheme, contact Richard on 01395 513383. We have A5 posters you can display in the window, also we’re promoting heavily in all the magazines we produce as well as on the HUB What’s On websites.

Amanda PophamHer annual solo show at Steam Gallery

with over 60 new worksSaturday 1 November to Friday 14 November

Steam Gallery’s event of the year the greatly anticipated solo show by Amanda Popham. She remains endlessly inventive and this show can only serve to enhance her reputation as one of the world’s great sculptural potters. Get in early to avoid disappointment!

Charlie O’Sullivan is firmly established as one of Britain’s leading contemporary artists with an international following. This show of 30 new works simply reinforces the evolution of her style and the depth of her imagination. The title she has chosen is “Beyond the Terminus of Memory”.

“In his 1949 book, Beyond the Terminus of Stars,

the East End poet Hugo Manning asks, ‘In the oceans wastes, is the albatross alone happy?’ For him, I believe the answer lay between rumour and reality, truth and fiction, that place best occupied by storytelling. The point where memory overlaps with imagination forms an inspirational and creative frontier. This is the departure point for the body of over thirty

new works I have painted for this show. “Beyond the Terminus of Memory”, inspired by Manning’s title, seemed to fit what this group of paintings tries to achieve. My painting continues to explore new ways of working and new materials. My visual interpretation of the narrative or story line is the fundamental underpinning to my compositions.”

Nelson’s Column A point of view!

by JOHN FISHER

DOZENS OF STATUES in London and

Manchester were given voice this summer

in an imaginative new arts initiative that

allows a passer-by to swipe a smartphone

across a nearby tag and hear them talk.

Abraham Lincoln in Mancheter has been

voiced by Tom Conti, Sherlock Holmes

in London’s Baker Street has the voice of

Anthony Horowitz (and a script by Tom

Stoppard).

But don’t expect some polite recitation of

their life and works from these monoliths.

That would be as mundane as the captions on

their plinths. Take John Wilkes for example,

a notorious 18th century parliamentarian,

advocate of free speech and rakehell.

He confronts passers-by in Fetter Lane with

the voice of Jeremy Paxman, no less, who

snarls: “It’s the ugliest man in England

here but leave me alone with your wife or

daughter, and you would better be back within

20 minutes or I’ll have talked my face away

and we’ll be upstairs.” Wilkes’s rant lasts for

3 minutes and 42 seconds and ends with an

abrupt, “Now go away!”

The work of a small creative team called Sing

London, (tap in www.singlondon.org) their

initiative is breathing new life into weary

landmarks and encouraging listeners to visit

nearby museums and exhibitions.

A good idea for Devon? Not that Devon has any weary landmarks

of course but if we did want to introduce

a little zest into some of the county’s old

favourites (ready for the next holiday season

and without costing ratepayers a fortune) we

might start with some of the following run-of-

the-mill, ho-hum statues. All of them are so

familiar to Devonians that we probably pass

them by without a second thought or even a

second glance. And that, surely, was never

the intention. So let’s hear it for:-

Francis Drake, on Plymouth Hoe: sailor, explorer, beard-singeing privateer, to be voiced by Joss Ackland

General Redvers Buller, outside Exeter College: soldier, war hero. Voice suggestion

Charles Kingsley, Bideford quayside: priest, historian and author of The Water Babies. Voice suggestion - Nicholas Parsons.

William of Orange, Brixham sea front: King 1689 – 1702. Voice suggestion - Dutch film actor (remember the bad guy in Blade Runner?) Rutger Hauer.

Lady Georgina Mount-Temple (below), Babbacombe:humanitarian, involved in the RSPCA and the Anti-Vivisection Society.Voiced by local lass, Jennifer Saunders.

“On the left-hand of this road lies that part of

They tell us they send twenty thousand

MODBURY

Celebrating

A modern day success story - and the traders and townsfolk are not afraid to shout it from the rooftops.

There are few towns these days that can boast a high street full of independent shops. In Modbury not only is

every shop occupied - pretty unusual when so many high streets are full of empty stores, charity shops and chain

outlets – but each store offers something unique, from art and antique galleries and gift shops, to interior design

and homeware, from hair care and beauty to fine food and locally sourced produce.

is famed for being forward-thinking and innovative. Remember the plastic bag ban from six years ago? It's still a passion in the town. These days the spirit that pioneered the project is still alive and well, new ideas are springing up all the time to keep the town current and relevant. This summer saw the launch of the successful Wheelbarrow Market which drew in new crowds who were intrigued by this quirky initiative. Every Saturday morning visitors came to buy fresh produce and locally designed crafts from the imaginatively decorated wheelbarrows while being entertained by musicians of all ages including the Vicar's Ukelele Band – a sight not be missed! Next year's Summer Wheelbarrow Market will be even bigger and better than this years.

This winter, Modbury traders will be working together to encourage more people to visit this traditional Georgian town to do their Christmas shopping. Shops will be open late till 8pm every Thursday from the end of October right through to Christmas. With a fantastic range of gift ideas and unique, individual products on oer together with a glass of mulled wine and lots of seasonal treats, this will be the perfect place to do your Christmas shopping. You can browse at leisure in a relaxed atmosphere and then round o the evening with a glass of wine or a festive meal.

One of England's most famous sons, Sir Francis Drake,

was born here in Tavistock

This fine statue of Sir Francis is situated on the Plymouth Road approach to Tavistock

An Old Abbey TownTavistock's Abbey has been at the centre of the town since Saxon times

I should imagine that as long as man has inhabited England, Tavistock will have been occupied. In the early days, tribes foraging, hunting and fishing along the banks of the Tavy will have had all that was required to eke out a living. Major settlement occurred when the Saxon King Edgar's brother-in-law, Ordulf founded Tavistock Abbey in 974 AD, also giving the Abbey 20 properties with which to support the upkeep of this costly religious community.

The major worry in those days was Viking attack, and despite paying the danegeld, Tavistock Abbey was sacked and burnt by the Vikings in 997 AD, being subsequently rebuilt by Ordulf and Abbot Aclfmar.

After Domesday in 1086, Norman lords deprived the Tavistock Abbey of lands and the Abbey was also required to cover the fees of 15 knights.

Alice in Wonderland! - a golden cloaked hare blowing an heraldic trumpet on roof of the Bedford Hotel. Surely contrived by someone with very deep pockets and eccentric taste. The turret is particularly elegant. The Duke of Bedford appointed Jeffry Wyatt to carry out the design work of this building (he was also responsible for the transformation of Windor Castle in 1824)

The guys at Tavistock Museum. Whilst you're visiting, don't miss their interesting exhibitions, particularly the one for 29th Infantry Division of US army. They were the first group on Omaha Beach at the D-Day landings.

In 1105, a Royal Charter was granted by Henry I for a pannier market, which is still in existence today, with a large market building just back from the square.

For five centuries the Abbey was the centre of life at Tavistock until that great vandal and asset stripper, Henry VIII, laid waste to the religious institutions across the land and as a result, Tavistock Abbey was fairly comprehensively destroyed (although minor parts of the Abbey can still be seen).

Tavistock's major claim to fame is as the home town of Sir Francis Drake, although the exact spot of his birth hasn't been verified. In 1549, the Drake family suddenly departed to live in Kent, where Francis learnt to sail on the Medway. Drake carried out the second circumnavigation of the world and his exploits against the Spanish are the stuff of legend. King Philip II was said to have offered a reward of 20,000 ducats for his capture (about £4 million today).

shops providing an interesting and friendly shopping experience, with the main streets being West Street, Duke Street, continuing down to Brook Street.

Not to be missed is the walk up along the Tavy into the town from the main car park, which takes you along some of the remaining Abbey walls and past the Abbey Still House. Once you arrive in the main square, you can see Saint Eustachisus' church and within the grounds you can see the sole remaining arch from the Abbey cloisters (right).

Various traders and businesses were in the square when the team from The Devonshire magazine visited. Teign Valley Bakery put on a fine show of their baking skills.

The view south east from the viaduct which apparently is going to see the train return once more (don't miss the chance to enjoy the views currently)

Tavistock, like Ashburton to the East, has also been a stannary town for centuries, with mining activity on the moor bringing much prosperity to the town over the years. The Devon Great Consols mine at Blanchdown was one of the biggest copper mines in the world, reputedly earning the 7th Duke of Bedford £2 million alone in the mid nineteenth century. Incidentally, Endsleigh House which was home to the Bedfords is now run by Alex Polizzi as Endsleigh Hotel.

Today, Tavistock's a bustling town with many small independent

The sprawling Square, all built to order by the Duke of Bedford. The buildings have a Scottish 'look' to them.

Again, another of the Duke of Bedford's commissioned buildings, he had deep pockets, his mines were extremely profitable.

Hardly the most cheerful message, but in their day and age, when a mere fever could see you off, their pragmatic approach was understandable. It reads:

"reader behold, here in the grave we lie, convincing proof of mans mortality. In vain for age or youth or strength to boast. As every moment thou art doom'd to dust. Strive to improve thy moments as they fly. Thy soul's immortal tho thy body die."

The East Window of the chapel designed by Burne-Jones and the renowned William Morris which commemorates John Hornbrook-Gill whose son married Morris's sister.

Amazing effigies within the church, reserving a place inside the church with this sort of display was the most you could possibly wish for.

Constant reminders of mortality are ever present, use of a symbolic skull seems to be fairly common practice.

But here’s the thing...

NEXT MONTH (November) sees the release

of a new film called Effie Gray. It stars Emma

Thomson, with Dakota Fanning in the title

role and, we had hoped, would have been set,

in part at least, in Budleigh Salterton,

For Effie Gray may be better identified as

Euphemia Chalmers Millais, Lady Millais

née Gray, aka Effie Gray, Effie Ruskin or

Effie Millais (1828 – 23 December 1897) and

Budleigh Salterton was a favourite stomping

ground of Effie and her second husband, one

of the most famous of the pre-Raphaelite

painters, John Everett Millais.

The film centres on her doomed first marriage

to art critic John Ruskin, in the 1840s, a

marriage that was never consummated. She

was 19, he 29 and revealed during the divorce

Devon braced for ‘Stir-up Sunday’

THIS COLUMN ESTIMATES 214,625

Christmas puddings will be eaten across

Devon this year. The vast majority shop-

bought but about 5% - and that’s 10,731 - home-

made and a home made pudding needs a LOT

of stirring.

It’s why ‘Stir-up Sunday’ was invented and

why generations of Devon mothers have told

their offspring that if they stir they may

make a wish - a practice that is believed to

have been started in this country by Prince

Albert. It possibly explains why Victorians

went in for such large families. Victoria and

Albert had nine offspring.

Traditional pudding producers need to be

all mixed up and ready to get steaming on or

proceedings that ‘some aspect of her body’

had revolted him.

She wrote to her father: “He alleged various reasons, hatred to children, religious motives, a desire to preserve my beauty, and, finally this last year he told me his true reason... that he had imagined women were quite different to what he saw I was, and that the reason he did not make me his Wife was because he was disgusted with my person the first evening.”

Five years later poor Effie married Ruskin’s

protégé, painter John Everett Millais (most

famously he painted The Boyhood of Raleigh

at Budleigh) who clearly found nothing about

Effie to revolt him and together they had

eight children.

Emma Thompson, who also appears in the

film as Lady Eastlake, also wrote the script,

which is set in Venice and London but dear

old Budleigh Salterton, alas, fails to make

the frame.

before the last Sunday before Advent, which

this year is December 1st. But hold on. Before

you start corralling the kids for the big stir

you may care to know that one enterprising

woman in Devon has come up with a short-cut.

WI to the rescue!

Google “Devon recipe Christmas Pudding”

and up comes a recipe from Angela Horlock of

the Devon Federation of Women’s Institutes,

for (believe it or not) a home-made, micro-

waved Christmas pud that is mixed, zapped

and ready to eat in less than 30 minutes.

That’s even less time than it takes to get down

to your local Kwiki-Mart and back. Could this

be the beginning of the end of civilisation as

we know it or is the WI onto a winner here?

Our Christmas stir-up wish is that it should

be the latter. - JOHN FISHERVictoria and Albert with

A Careful EditAutumn is always a busy time of year in the interior design industry. Trade Shows and Design Weeks are taking place at home and abroad and any interior designer worth his or her salt is closely reviewing what the world has to offer, often with specific clients and projects in mind, taking away from the vast choice presented a carefully edited selection to add to their palette. Such an edit may include a particular texture, colour, fabric or wallpaper, a raw material to use within a design or as a component for a bespoke furniture piece, a particular chair or table or the merest hint of a certain shape or pattern that is appealing.

Each designer will notice different aspects of any given array of materials and products on offer, each will have a different perspective and resulting interpretations will be unique and tailored to a particular client and project. It is this creative aspect of the interior design industry that makes it such an exciting space. Here are some of the things currently in our studio's edit.

Devon based interior designer Susan Folwell of

Artisans and Artists talks about interior

design trends and the current fascination

the industry has with nature.

A GLAMOROUSNATURE

Nature Turns Up The GlamourNature has turned up the volume on glamour and is striking out in all of her glory. Wallpapers cleverly printed with metallic or opalescent mica finishes and fabrics incorporating reflective elements sit well alongside materials with a natural background.Perennially popular motifs such as exotic birds have come to the fore and colourful examples can be found fluttering across fabrics and wallpapers. Palms waving seductively, from the most delicate patterns on fabrics and wallpapers to full scale 10ft high utterly convincing faux trees - nothing adds quite such drama to a room than a 10ft palm.

Above - Marbleous Surround Wallpaper from Zinc offers an easy alternative to marble for walls, available in 5 colourways (Marbleous in Connemara ZW112 £650 for 15 sq metres)

Detail - Malachite patterned fabric from Jim Thompson, available in 4 colourways (Gemstone fabric 3325/04 £70 per metre)

Above - Quartz Crystal lighting by Australian lighting designer Christopher Boots - POA at Artisans and Artists

Rock ChicMarble, malachite, semi-precious stones and fossilised wood supply another dimension to nature's glamorous offering. Marble, in a glorious array of colours and patterns for walls, floors and counter tops, is offered alongside technically clever, man-made, lightweight options that provide striking and inexpensive alternatives.

Quartz crystal and other semi precious stones are being developed into the most engaging lighting, formed into sheet material for counter tops and walls, as well as being incorporated into decorative objects.

Above - Matthew Williamson has captured the essence of colourful exotic birds and palms in his Sunbird fabric available in 4 colourways plus matching

wallpapers (Sunbird F6533/01 £68 per metre from Osborne and Little)

Above -Bellisario Stripe wallpaper from Zinc, available in 6 colourways (shown in Gunmetal ZW107/01 £105 per roll)

Out of AfricaAlways exotic and glamorous - African safari chic makes a subtle turn and it's all about texture and pattern. Designs inspired by the animal kingdom - less precise and more ethereal than previously imagined - bring a seductive element to fabrics and wallpapers as well as carpets and decorative objects. Shagreen is working its way onto walls, curtains, cushions and furniture - subtle matt finishes can be found alongside shimmering creations.

Above - Embossed effect velvet from Black Edition, available in 5 colourways, adds a very tactile texture to this sofaDetail - Veta in Nougat 7652/01 £110 per metre from Black Edition

Patina - Nature's Hand of Time Patina speaks to us of time and experience, memories and romance. The

allure of a special antique piece, the faded glamour of patinated walls, aged fabrics and precious frescoes. Working with

patinated materials presents opportunities for unique and interesting interiors to be created.

Left - Venier from Rubelli presents 20 fabric colourways of this patinated

design (Venier fabric 30882 - left to right - Sabbia,

Acqua, Reseda - £143 per metre)

available in 5 colourways - wallpapers also available (fabric Z369/02 Morgan

Playing with re!THE SQUARE IS PACKED. It’s nearly midnight and the last barrel of the year is zig-zagging through the crush, everyone craning their necks, standing on tip-toe to know will it come their way. The next runner lifts it to his shoulders, blackened by soot, the potato-sacking wrapped round his hands already smouldering with the heat. Very soon now, with the iron hoops glowing red, he must heave the remains crashing to the ground. The men will throw their own gloves into the blaze, grinning at one another and shaking hands. They will sing Auld Lang Syne. The ritual is over for another year.

Ottery St Mary’s TAR BARRELS

This ancient Devon tradition needs treating with respect

So come and watch - but just stand well back!THE DAWN WILL COME UP LIKE THUNDER from the ring of a dozen ‘rock canons’ in one particular Devon town this November 5th as it has done since who knows when. The town is Ottery St. Mary and the year that began what is now known universally as Tar Barrel Night is lost in the smoke of a thousand bon res.The only certainty is that if someone tried to roll out those famous blazing barrels from scratch nowadays it would give a Health & Safety inspector a heart attack – which doesn’t mean that visitor safety is not of paramount importance to the people who run it each year.Their job is to oversee the running of seventeen blazing barrels as they pass

rapidly through the narrow streets of the town on the shoulders of the chosen ones – and that means Ottery-born and Ottery-bred – the only people empowered to carry this honour. Accompanied by warning shouts of

‘”Up’ards!” or “Down’ards!” they run pell-mell through the crowds who gather in this ancient town, sparks and ames spewing from the mouths of the barrels as they twist and turn, scattering the throng until things get too hot to handle and the next runner wrestles it onto his own shoulders. To drop a barrel is to bring about its premature demise and the old sweats amongst the runners

reckon to be able to keep a barrel blazing for 20 minutes or more. But unlike the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona this isn’t a display of mindless bravado played out for the bene t of a crowd, as Andy Wade, the event organiser told Devonshire magazine, “This town has an ancient history and for those of us who take part in Tar Barrel Night this is part of a way of life”.

“We are proud of an annual event that has been passed down through generations and we ask that people who come to celebrate the night with us treat those traditions with respect. And the best way to treat a aming tar barrel with respect is to stand well back and watch!

Echoes from the pastOTTERY WAKES EARLY every November 5th to the sounds of canon re. Not ship’s canons you understand but so-called

’rock canons’, hand-held lengths of pipe - looking as though they might once have belonged to Dick Turpin - stu ed with explosive powder and detonated by striking an explosive cap with a second piece of ironmongery. These are let o , sometimes singly, sometimes 12 at a time.If you live out of town these explosions come as deep reverberating thuds. Closer to they rattle windows, scatter pigeons and set unknown numbers of Ottregians turning over in their beds to check their alarm clocks and say things like, “Oh, joy! It’s Tar Barrel Day today!” It is 5am.

Ottery St Mary’sTAR BARRELS

Go to blazes!CAMERAS AT THE READY? Picture this. It’s 7.30 and a massive bon re, the size of a three-storey house and weeks in the building, is re ected in the River Otter. The heat is already intense as the blaze grows higher and Guy Fawkes’s dreams go up in smoke for the 408th year in succession to the cheers of the crowds and the neon-lit whiz and throb of the fair across the river. Down there is the Millennium Meadow and up here we are on St. Saviour’s bridge. It’s a great vantage point and where much of the crowd gathers as the rst of the Men’s barrels is lit. The coal tar catches, the ames lick round the rim and the crowd parts as this rst of “the big unz” starts down the slope towards the town, scattering the crowd as it goes. Look out, Ottery!

I t seems to me that vets today have

it easy when it comes to handling

difficult animals. Back in the 60’s we

did not have the rapid acting sedatives

and dart guns available today.

One day I had just finished morning

surgery at my Plymouth practice when

I received a call from the police. “A

leopard has escaped at Plymouth Zoo.

Can you attend?” Not having the

courage to say no, I said I would be

right there. Well I did all the police

work and the zoo was bang next door

to my surgery. Then it occurred to me

that the zoo had closed a year ago;

so I was intrigued. The problem of

what equipment to take was soon

solved as I had only a slow acting

narcotic, usually used to sedate

animals before an operation. It took

about 15 minutes to work; a lot can

happen in 15 minutes. But I took a

large syringe!

On arrival I found out what had

happened. A leopard was being

transported from abroad to Whipsnade

Zoo. The driver had received

permission from the owners of the

zoo, the Chipperfields of circus fame,

to rest overnight in their premises.

During the night the leopard had

broken the wire in the corner of the

trailer and escaped. The driver was

nowhere to be seen. The fact that the

red light district of Devonport was just

down the road was irrelevant. The

leopard was most probably still within

the zoo’s high fence, but to be safe the

police had cleared the whole of the

surrounding Central Park and police

cars were circling the park with bells

and sirens galore, an impressive sight,

but in the zoo itself there was an eerie

silence. The site was steeply sloping

and I began to walk up, quartering

the ground as I climbed.

A third of the way up I met two high

ranking police officers, a magnificent

sight in all their silver insignia. The

thought struck me that the leopard

might me attracted by all this

glinting bling, so having exchanged

pleasantries I rapidly put distance

between us and worked my way up

the slope. What I thoughts I was

going to do if I met the beast heaven

knows, but the ignorance of youth

drove me on.

At the top of the enclosed area was

a deserted ice cream kiosk and I was

heading for this when I heard a loud

voice behind me. “You’re mad you

lot. That leopard is a killer!” It was

Richard Chipperfield, a well known

member of the younger generation

of the family, rifle slung over his

shoulder. I told him I had covered

the lower slopes and he went straight,

up to the kiosk, shinned up the drain

pipe like a cat burglar and onto the

flat roof. I stayed where I was, for

want of anything better to do, not 20

yards from the kiosk. Two shots rang

out and Richard Chipperfield climbed

down from the roof. The leopard had

been resting on the lawn where, in

years gone by, customers had sat at

tables and licked their ice-creams

or consumed their drinks at rickety

little tables and chairs. Richard had

undoubtedly saved my life. I went

over to see her and his shooting was

immaculate. First a spinal neck shot

to immobilise her and then a heart

shot: but she was beautiful and I could

not resist stroking her still warm body.

Proudly flying the flag for Devon!

PartnershipsGive and Take

The horse’s behaviour is affected by two main factors - the environment and genetics - and the better we can understand and manage the influence of these factors, the more successful our partnership with a horse will be.We used to mainly ride and drive horses as a mode of transport, they were useful to us. Nowadays very few people take a carriage to work or ride a pony to school because other more practical solutions are available but we continue to ride because it brings us pleasure. In the process of gaining this pleasure we do many things that are completely senseless to the horse and if we can appreciate how they

think and behave then hopefully we can minimise the negative affects that our pleasure seeking can have on them. As with human relationships, horse-human partnerships require give and take to optimise success.Although it is an unpleasant thought, keeping horses stabled is the most obvious way in which we are selfish at the expense of the horse. Wild zebra (a close relative as there are very few truly wild horses) have a movement range of up to 80 square miles. New Forest ponies cover a 4 mile range. A stabled horse has 12 square feet. They all have the same innate need for movement.Other practices that we carry out can be with good intentions to look after the horse but are actually incomprehensible to them. We pick out their feet but horses are a flight animal and handing over one of their means of escape doesn’t come naturally. We lunge them round and round in circles, often in trot or canter for up to half an hour or more. Our reasoning is to ‘give her some exercise’ or ‘stretch his legs because of being stabled’, but a horse would

never exercise itself like this, it would amble for a few hours over large distances, with the occasional short trot or canter.Perhaps the most generous thing horses do for us is to let us ride them. For a creature that can be scared of a fluttering crisp packet, to let someone sit on their back shows how giving they can be. They are literally trusting us with their life, we know that we are not going to jump on their backs and eat them but they don’t know that; their instinct says otherwise and they have to learn this and trust us, a different species that talks a whole different language to them. How impossible people make this at times, when they inflict pain, discomfort and confusion by their riding. We should therefore try and consider that in keeping them for our pleasure, we need to give our horses something in return. If we learn to understand them, we can manage and ride them in such a way that enables their mental and physical needs to be met as much as possible. This can only be good for us too as after all, we are also trusting them with our safety.

In the Garden

Fallen leaves and twigs come hand in hand with autumn, but don't let them go to waste as you can use them for compost bins or a bonfire - don't forget to check your bonfire for hibernating hedgehogs!

October and November is also the time to start getting ready for Spring and protecting delicate plants against those crisp winter frosts; planting spring flowering bulbs/garlic/shallots, and trimming back perennial greenery are all a must to get ready for next year.
