A CVCE thematic ePublication is an enhanced scholarly digital publication composed of a wide range of relevant and enriched source material on a particular theme.

It is geared towards research communities as well as teaching and lifelong learning communities.

The focal point is the source material in both qualitative and quantitative aspects.

The following committees are set up on an interdisciplinary basis by the CVCE’s Committee of Experts:

On 9 December 1955, Pierre Pescatore, Legal Adviser to the Luxembourg Foreign Ministry, receives a note from the British Embassy in Luxembourg outlining the reservations of the British Government about the proposal for the Common Market.

German diplomatic cable from the FRG Embassy in Paris on French reactions to the results of the Council of Ministers’ meeting on 14 and 15 December 1970 concerning economic and monetary union (Paris, 16 December 1970)

The cable highlights the fact that France, due to take over the Presidency of the EC Council of Ministers on 1 January 1971, is keen to secure an agreement on the specific measures to put economic and monetary union into motion.

On 6 January 1971, Gaston Thorn, Luxembourg Foreign Minister, sends an extract from a confidential report from the Netherlands Embassy in Paris to Pierre Werner, Luxembourg Prime Minister and Finance Minister, concerning France's position on the establishment of an economic and monetary union.

Cable from Jean Sauvagnargues on disagreements between France and Germany with regard to economic and monetary union (Bonn, 14 January 1971)

On 14 January 1971, in preparation for the French-German Summit on economic and monetary union due to be held on 25 and 26 January 1971, the French Ambassador to Bonn, Jean Sauvagnargues, sends a cable to his Foreign Ministry in which he outlines his discussions with German State Secretary von Braun. He highlights the German Federal Government’s concern to reduce the distance between the French and German positions, without wishing to go back over points on which agreement has already been reached.

On 24 March 1955, drawing the appropriate conclusions from the failure of the European Defence Community (EDC), Johan Willem Beyen, Netherlands Foreign Minister, submits a note to his government colleagues in which he advocates reviving European integration through a joint Benelux initiative for a wider common market.

On 26 November 1947, estate agent Ray Moseley shares his concerns with US President Harry Truman about the financial aid provided by the United States to European countries at the expense of American households. In his reply, dated 1 December 1947, Harry Truman points out that most European countries have been devastated by the war and urgently require US economic aid.

Telegram on the obstacles raised by France to some chapters of the enlargement negotiations (18 June 1982)

On 18 June 1982, Portugal’s Mission to the EEC sends a telegram to the Portuguese Foreign Ministry summarising the working meeting of the Council which took place the previous day. At that meeting, the French Delegation raised obstacles in some areas, thereby preventing the Community from adopting a joint position with regard to the accession of Portugal.
