Intro to Isaiah

• Isaiah prophesied from the end of the reign of Uzziah through Hezekiah’s reign in Judah

• Isaiah lived and worked in Judah• He worked beyond the fall of Samaria• Isaiah outlived Hezekiah (Is. 37:38)

Page 6: The Divided Kingdom II

Overview of Isaiah• Isaiah neatly divides into two sections

– Chapters 1-39– Chapters 40-66

• Some have said that Isaiah is like a “miniature Bible”– They point out that there are 66 books, 39 in the OT and 27 in

the NT matching Isaiah’s division– They point out that the message of the first 39 chapters is

judgment and the message of the last 27 chapters is hope• While there is some validity to it, I would use caution with

such a comparison– Specifically, we don’t want to send the message that the OT is

only about judgment or give credence to the idea that God is more harsh in the OT

Overview of Isaiah

• Chapters 1-39 – Several proclamations of judgment mixed with

calls to repentance– Several Messianic images– Prophecies against Judah (1-12)– Prophecies against the nations (13-23)– Judgment – The Day of the Lord (24-27)– Rebukes and Promises for Israel (28-35)– Historical Parenthesis (36-39)
