We meet them all in these chapters of Luke’s gospel; and through these chapters is heard the recurrent quesoning, “how shall we inherit eternal life?” Or - as in today’s gospel – “will there be only a few saved?” As the crisis of faith deepens, these are crical quesons both for the individual and the society. There’s an urgency about it, because, “many will try to enter and will not succeed.” Jesus has made up his mind to go through the narrow door. It is the only way we have of knowing and believing in our love.” We’re back with the poor, the maimed, the blind and many others, at the margins, in the company God has chosen, seeing whether our love is for real. The narrow door, the locked-up inn, it can seem a lile unjust, too cut and dry. But, at this point, when many are turning away from Jesus, the emphasis is on geng in and quickly. Jesus impresses on us the need for decisiveness: make up your mind, as he has. Having set his face like flint towards Jerusalem, he finds his way to the margins, knowing that, in the end, his decision to confront the powers that bring us undone, will open the door to the kingdom. We can hear this in the last part of today’s gospel: opposion to him will open the way for others to come from far and wide to join with Abraham and the prophets and take their place at “the feast in the kingdom of God” and behold we see something like this in our local churches – that, “there are those now last who will be first and those now first who will be last.” It’s a generous, inside out world that Jesus urges us to enter. Follow Truth

We’re in the midst of Jesus’ journeying to Jerusalem, but, at this point, it’s not so much a journey to the centre, as a journey to the margins. Everything is happening at the margins, though, often, we like to think that nothing really happens there. The poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind, a man with dropsy and a woman bent over, ten lepers, tax collectors and the outcasts of society. We meet them all in these chapters of Luke’s gospel; and through these chapters is heard the recurrent questioning, “how shall we inherit eternal life?” Or - as in today’s gospel – “will there be only a few saved?” As the crisis of faith deepens, these are critical questions both for the individual and the society. Jesus doesn’t respond with numbers, instead, he warns us not to miss this moment. There’s an urgency about it, because, “many will try to enter and will not succeed.” Jesus has made up his mind to go through the narrow door. Dorothy Day once reminded us: “The mystery of the poor is this: that they are Jesus, and what you do for them you do for Him. It is the only way we have of knowing and believing in our love.” We’re back with the poor, the maimed, the blind and many others, at the margins, in the company God has chosen, seeing whether our love is for real. Go through the narrow door then, with them, don’t put it off till you feel up to it, do it today. In the second image from the gospel, the door having been locked, that’s it, there’s no second chance, even though we cry, “come on, please – hey, remember us.” Despite our entreaties he’ll say, “I don’t know you …” and the door will stay shut. The narrow door, the locked-up inn, it can seem a little unjust, too cut and dry. But, at this point, when many are turning away from Jesus, the emphasis is on getting in and quickly. Jesus impresses on us the need for decisiveness: make up your mind, as he has. Having set his face like flint towards Jerusalem, he finds his way to the margins, knowing that, in the end, his decision to confront the powers that bring us undone, will open the door to the kingdom. We can hear this in the last part of today’s gospel: opposition to him will open the way for others to come from far and wide to join with Abraham and the prophets and take their place at “the feast in the kingdom of God” and behold we see something like this in our local churches – that, “there are those now last who will be first and those now first who will be last.” It’s a generous, inside out world that Jesus urges us to enter.
