The Douglas Legacy From the Pastor’s Desk: “What About God?”

In all the media coverage over the recent violence in Baltimore and around the

country, the surreal mass shootings, substance abuse crises, and the consuming

debates about politics; I wonder if anyone has asked the question, “What about

God?” This is a critical question that must be considered if we are really going to

lead lives that rise above the malaise of mediocrity and the hum-drum.

Today, we live in a world so technologically advanced that we don’t have to con-

tend with some of the challenges the generations before us had to deal with. We

can send messages around the world in less than a second, travel from one of

the planet to the other in less than a day, take pictures with phones, make phone

calls with cameras, etc. But, what about God? Certainly, life is more simple (or

us what His mission was “I have come that you may have life and have it more

abundantly (to the fullest)”. This is indeed our challenge—to lead abundant and

    full lives.

In answering the question, “What about God?” consider this: are you living life

to the fullest, the way God wanted you to? Or are you so caught up in the ease

and comfort of technology and creature comforts that God has become a name

that you have to think hard to remember, as if He were an acquaintance? These

are indeed challenging times, but we serve a God who specializes in challenges.

Celebrate this fact as you reflect on the meaning of resurrection today.

    Men’s Month—October 2019

    DMCC Celebrates 12 Months of

    Commitment to Healthy Living

Project HEAL will return to DMCC on Sunday,

November 3, 2019 from 12:30—2 pm following the

    worship service.

The purpose of the 12-month observance is to

share with the congregation, and receive feedback

on our healthy living and commitment to preventive

awareness. The Project HEAL (Health through

Early Awareness and Learning) 12-month session is

a refresher and report back workshop focusing on

    breast, prostate, colorectal cancer.

Persons who participated in the first workshop and

completed surveys will be invited to complete a

follow-up survey. As with the first survey, they will

receive $15 for the effort. See Rev. Lottie Sneed

and Bro. Tim Rice for details.

This year’s theme for Men's Month is "A Few Good

Men". The premise for this theme is that if Jesus

could save the entire world with twelve, the men

of Douglas can bring positive change to our

community. The scriptural reference for the theme

is Genesis 18:26, where God promises to spare the

city if the prophet can find fifty righteous.

During Men's Month we will re-launch the once-

monthly Saturday morning men's gathering. We are

rebranding it "The Barbershop" so come ready for a

    shape-up.

Men’s Day 2019 will be observed on Sunday,

    October 20, 2019.

    DOUGLAS M E N – t a l i t y Did you know that?

Black men live 7.1 years less than other racial

    groups.

They have higher death rates than women for

    all leading causes of death.

    Black men experience disproportionately higher

death rates in all the leading causes of death in

    the United States.

40% of black men die prematurely from cardio-

vascular disease as compared to 21% of white

    men.

They experience a higher incidence and a higher

rate of death from oral cancer.

Black men are 5 times more likely to die of HIV/

    AIDS.

44% of black men are considered overweight.

24% of black men are obese.

Black men have a higher incidence of diabetes

    and prostate cancer.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death in 15

to 24 year- old black men.

    Project HEAL Follow-Up Session

Black men in the United States demonstrate worse

health outcomes than any other racial group in

America. For example, as a group, black men have

the lowest life expectancy, and the highest death

rate, compared to both men and women of other

    racial and ethnic groups.

As a continuation of our Men’s Month celebration,

the Men of Douglas will address these and other

issues facing African American men on Sunday,

November 3, 2019, during the Project HEAL

follow-up health forum. This review of appropriate

lifestyle choices, best practices, and preventive

measures is vitally important. Please plan to

    participate.

    Mark Alston, Eagle Scout

The Alstons are so proud of Mark, Jr. who recently

achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of

America. Mark is the grandson of Barbara Alston, neph-

ew of Audrey and John Gibson, cousin of Dayna Gibson

and son of very proud parents, Mark, Sr. and Loretta

    Alston.

He was recognized by his church, Mt. Peace Baptist

Church in Raleigh, NC, the Mayor of Raleigh, the Wake

County Board of Education, the Governor and Office of

North Carolina, Boy Scouts of America Occoneechee

Council and the United States Congress.

This exciting achievement deserves recognition, so I am

very proud to share Mark’s accomplishment with my

church family. By Barbara (Babs) Alston

As part of our 2019 Men’s

    Month observance, we are

    spotlighting individual men of

    Douglas affording the Douglas

    Family the opportunity to learn

more about these men of God,

and their activities both in and outside of Douglas. In this

article we shine the spotlight on Micah Smith, the

newest addition to the Music Ministry of Douglas.

Micah is a very gifted musician, singer, songwriter, and

composer of contemporary gospel and sacred Christian

music. Having recognized a need for change, he

considers his mission to be the transformation of the

heart of man through both the personal conviction and

passion that he brings to song. “My music can help them

see the light and direction of a higher power.”

Consistent with this missional view of, and approach to

music, Micah uses his gifts to create powerful vibrations

that can lift spirits and reach the hearts of those in his

listening audience. He seeks to create music that will

both inspire positive evolution, and encourage

triumphant lives. He believes that for every life situation

there is a song that speaks to any given experience.

Micah brings this missional sensibility with him to

Douglas. His smooth, warm, and welcoming voice has a

unique way of changing the atmosphere of a room. As

those of us who have experienced his witness here at

Douglas can readily attest, his music has been known to

touch the hearts of many and inspire their lives. This

approach to ministry is most consistent with the

Douglas credo, “Changing Lives, Building Legacies.”

Micah’s musicality is not at all one-dimensional, as his

repertoire cuts across numerous genres and modalities.

His innovative style is influenced by the artists and great

musical melodies of his youth, which together serve as

his inspiration. Micah has been dubbed today’s “velvet

voice” by super producer Dontae Winslow. He has

Introducing Micah Smith By Min. Earl M. Andrews

shared the stage with such renowned songwriters and

musicians as Frank McComb, Lonnie Liston Smith,

Kenny Latimore, Jason Nelson, The Bad Boy Family and

Puff Daddy, Marvin Sapp, Roberta Flack, and many other

acclaimed artists in today’s industry. He recently

participated in the DC Jazz Festival having performed on

the Millennium Stage of the Kennedy Center.

Micah’s current projects include arranging vocal

production and/or songwriting for other artists.

Additional activities include working as a private vocal

coach, Baltimore City teacher, and traveling musician.

He is also intimately involved in the much celebrated

Soulful Symphony Organization under the direction of

Darin Atwater, who is indeed no stranger to Douglas.

Please join me in extending a very warm welcome to

this latest addition to the Music Ministry of DMCC.

A Word About Giving We are a tithing church because the Word teaches

tithing. Our experience gives witness to tithing, and our

obedience to God requires tithing. Our response is to

bring our tithes and offerings to the Lord as he has

prospered us, for the “tenth shall be holy unto the

    Lord.”

    Determining the Amount to Give

Pray sincerely to God, asking for His guidance and

direction as to what your financial gift will be.

You may choose to give on a weekly, bi-weekly, monthly

    or other basis.

    Methods of Giving

Using the Offering Envelope Make checks

payable to DMCC and supply the requested

information. We want to have complete and accurate

information for the preparation of year-end contribu-

    tion statements.

    Electronic Giving

or android or log on to www.givelify.com or

Credit or Debit Card—See Rev. Vivian Ferebee

Contributions for Special Projects should be separate

and made payable only to DMCC MECU.

Please remember that even when you are not present,

the financial responsibilities of the church go on, just as

they do in our homes. When you are unable to attend

church, please use the options listed above or mail in
