EXECUTIVE VICE CHAIRMAN

TAWFIC S. KHOURY

As the Year 2016 comes to a close, I wish all our readers, the CCC family and our community a Happy New Year.

CCC, as part of its continuous improvement drive, is putting emphasis on evaluating and improving its governance, knowledge sharing culture, productivity, systems and procedures. Profitability, reputation, clients’ strategies and requirements, and the geopolitical and world economic challenges are further critical topics that will be addressed. These are critical topics that with your support, and with the best management available, could be addressed so as to position the company to achieve our strategic goals.

The recent good news about the increase in oil and gas prices will hopefully usher in an improvement in market conditions and

reduce some of the challenges we have faced recently from tough competition and a decline in sales. Nevertheless, we need to persevere in enhancing CCC’s leadership position, improving our methods of execution, enhancing the tools available to project management, and maintaining a superior workforce to ensure our ability to emerge stronger and better positioned to shape the future. Project, Area, and Corporate teams need to continue to work hand-in-hand ensuring the sustainability of CCC leadership.

CCC’s large backlog, currently in excess of $8 billion, has placed us in an excellent position to ride the current down cycle. CCC is well positioned to participate in and capture a well identified healthy share of new project awards, as proven very recently in the major awards in Qatar and UAE, exceeding $2 billion. A carefully drawn diversification strategy has given CCC an enviable resilience, differentiating us from the adversely affected competition, and has paid off under demanding market conditions. With your support, CCC will maintain its focus on pursuing the following:

1. Improving execution and productivity.

2. Advancing the screening of new sales, satisfying our preferred customers with quality, safety, on schedule and least cost delivery.

3. Improving CCC’s processes of governance and accountability.

4. Identifying growth strategy and acting to increase CCC’s services and identifying new segments.

5. Enforcing the implementation of CCC’s systems and procedures.

6. Ensuring area management works towards becoming cash positive.

7. Strengthening the next generation of young leaders, preparing the organization for management succession, and supporting and empowering newly identified managers.

With CCC’s existing strong governance and management I am confident that CCC will continue to rise to the challenge.

2016, even with tough market conditions, ended up as another good year where CCC maintained the leadership role. CCC’s effective teamwork will continuously enhance our services and maintain our established position, and succeed in securing solid results.

Again, I wish you all a successful New Year full of accomplishments, health and happiness.

M. SOUFYAN

IntroductionThe function of field engineering is to provide drawing and document production services needed on site, process field change requests and site queries as well as to document the as-built status on construction drawings. The Field Engineering Department does not carry out design and development work.

The field engineering process is a complex nature that interfaces with the design authority, customer and project team. Field engineering is a major process that consists of the following minor processes:

1. Shop/site drawings preparation and issue.

2. Drawings for mechanical works.

3. Drawings for civil works.

4. Revision of drawings.

5. Technical queries.

6. Field changes.

7. As built preparation.

This article will cover items 1 to 4 and the next Bulletin article will cover items 5 to 7, as illustrated in Chart 01.

Input of Design Authority

Drawings received from home office engineering organisation “design authority” will be passed

to the Document Control Group (DCG) for registration in the project document control system (VBC). DCG will advise, by e-mail, all personnel listed as recipients on the Document Distribution Matrix (DDM) that contract drawings are available and provide a link to them. Where the DDM indicates a hard copy is required then hard copies will be printed and issued on a controlled basis.

In-House Detailing Software

In order to process isometrics through TALISO (In house detailing software), the following types of documents are required and should be provided by home office engineering:

• Isometric Drawing as hard copy (PDF file).

• Isometric Drawing as soft format (AutoCAD or micro-station).

• Isometric Data File (IDF) (extracted from model in table format).

Field Engineering Review

The appointed engineer / draughtsman will review contract drawings to determine whether

there are any discrepancies and to decide which drawings need to be subdivided or further detailed as shop drawings.

The appointed engineer will ensure that the drawings are fully detailed and adequate. All requirements should be complete, unambiguous and no conflicts should exist. Where there are any discrepancies

a technical query will be prepared and sent via DCG to the Home office Engineering Organisation for clarification.

Preparation of Shop Drawings

The draughtsman will arrange to have shop drawings created using the approved site drawing / compilation software package. Shop drawings will be prepared by the CADD/software operator and subjected to a self-check routine, followed by a complete check of all drawing variables by the engineer / draughtsman concerned. Following an internal check, the drawings may be submitted to the customer / consultant for approval.

Customer Approval

Drawings returned from the customer will first be registered with DCG and then passed on to the engineer concerned. For the purpose of shop drawings, all customer comments will be addressed either by inclusion of the comment or through discussion with the customer to annul the comment. All shop drawings will reach either approved status or accepted for information status before reaching the mechanical completion phase of the project.

Shop Drawings Issue

Drawings that have been classified as approved with comments, approved or accepted for information will be issued, approved for construction, to those persons designated to receive shop drawings on the Document Distribution Matrix (DDM). This distribution will be arranged by DCG.

Shop Drawings for Mechanical WorksFor mechanical projects the engineer / draughtsman will review drawings and confirm the existence of all field and shop joints included in the drawings (typically isometric drawings) wherever applicable. All mechanical shop drawings will be passed to the Project Welding Engineer (or a nominated person in the QA/QC Department) for inclusion of joint welding (both shop and field) and NDT information. This process is illustrated in Chart 02.

Customer Material Management System

Some customers require the use of their material management system. Where this is the case both Talisman and the customer systems will be deployed and will work in parallel. Talisman is necessary to ensure material traceability, material control and quality management requirements throughout the construction process and prepare documentation for handover.

Shop Drawings for Civil WorksFor civil projects the civil engineer will review the shop drawings and note whether there is any MEP content included in the drawing (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, plumbing and so on). Where MEP content is included in the drawing, the drawing will be passed to the MEP Department or MEP subcontractor for review and inclusion (by mark-up) of any specific MEP data.

Where applicable, the draughtsman will prepare all necessary shop drawings indicating Material Take Off (MTO) per shop drawing, for concrete foundations, rebar work, insert plates, anchor bolts and so on.

The marked up drawing will be returned to the appointed engineer / draughtsman or by agreement the project engineer who will arrange for the drawing to be updated and transmitted to the customer via DCG.

Shop Drawings Issue / DistributionDrawings returned from the customer will first be registered with DCG and then passed on to the engineer concerned. Usually (although not always) the customer will have a coding system along the lines of that shown in the table.

For the purpose of shop drawings, all customer comments will be addressed either by inclusion of the comment or through discussion with the customer to annul the comment. All shop drawings will reach either approved status or accepted for information status before reaching the mechanical completion phase of the project. Drawings that have been classified

as approved with comments, approved or accepted for information will be issued, approved for construction, to those persons delegated to receive shop drawings on the Document Distribution Matrix (DDM). This distribution will be arranged by DCG.

Revision of DrawingsWhere an issued drawing is to be reissued the existing drawing will be placed on hold by the engineer or senior draughtsman who will advise all existing holders of the drawing that the drawing is on hold.

The draughtsman will compare the currently issued drawing to the revised drawing and note any differences between the two drawings - in particular the draughtsman will note any material changes. The draughtsman will indicate (by means of clouding) the revised part of the drawing and update the Material Take-Off (MTO) as required (additions or subtractions).

The Talisman system will be updated and consulted to determine material availability. Field Warehouse Requisitions (FWR) will be prepared for the materials required.

The revised drawings will be issued, by DCG, to all persons delegated to receive drawings on the Document Distribution Matrix (DDM), together with instructions that the previous issue of the drawing is to either be marked “superseded” or disposed of.

The Dubai Opera HouseTHE OPERA HOUSE PROJECT TEAM

IntroductionDubai’s latest development will boost cultural life in the Gulf’s chief business hub. A dhow-shaped theatre nestled at the base of the world’s tallest tower, it is the cultural heart of a circuit of galas and galleries scattered across the Business Bay area.

Filling the dramaturgical void felt by theatregoers and aestheticians, the 2,000-seat auditorium, designed by Janus Rostock of Atkins, satisfies a range of artistic needs, and can be converted into a traditional theatre, concert and banquet hall, or exhibition space by using hydraulic technology to relocate 900 of the 2,000 seats.

An architectural and engineering marvel, Dubai Opera will shepherd the business-orientated emirate to new heights by consolidating its status as a pioneer of inimitable luxury and a connoisseur of culture.

Dubai Opera passionately embraces its role as the vibrant cultural heart of Dubai, and is committed to hosting the finest, authentic, creative and engaging performing arts experiences to inspire local artists and catalyze the creation of other culture spots in the region.

ConstructionWhat started on 27 November 2013 came to fruition on 31 August 2016. Designed to resemble a dhow (a nod to the traditional sailing vessel used by Emiratis), the ‘bow’ of

the structure houses the opera’s main stage, orchestra and seating, while the elongated ‘hull’ accommodates the waiting areas, taxi drop-off areas, and parking.

Who better to spearhead the construction of this project than EMAAR, who have already contributed so much of their internationally renowned expertise to the development of Downtown Dubai? The world’s most visited lifestyle destination, the 500-acre neighbourhood is home to the iconic Burj Khalifa, The Dubai Mall and The Dubai Fountain, which have also been brought to life by the company’s expert hands.

Project InformationBrought to life by EMAAR Properties, the immense 65,000m2 structure, whose dhow-like shape is inspired by Dubai’s maritime past, opened 31 August 2016 with a performance by legendary tenor, Plácido Domingo.

One of the most exciting construction projects to date, the grand auditorium, fitted with over 2,000 seats, has the unique capacity to transform to suit the needs of the Opera House. With move walls, ceilings and a floor that can be raised to theatre-high, the traditional theatre can be transformed into a concert and banquet hall, if needed.

Supported by over 70,000m3 of concrete, and 12,000 tonnes of steel, the colossal venue is both large and state-of-the-art, and will easily be able to accommodate a range of productions and shows.

The Dubai Opera House

InteriorThe delicate interwoven collection of dark wood and modern features is the foundation of Dubai Opera’s interior in what is a contemporary design and stylish tribute to Dubai’s maritime history.

The building’s exquisite design, by architect Janus Rostock, equips the venue with an exceptional ability to transform into three modes: from a theatre into a concert hall, and into a ‘flat floor’ mode suitable for banquet or event hall. This seamless flexibility enables Dubai Opera to host a wide variety of performances and events including theatre, opera, ballet, orchestras, concerts, fashion shows, live entertainment, conferences, galleries and art exhibitions.

In theatre mode, the space is suitable for large-scale drama productions, musicals, ballets, lectures, and conferences, seating up to 2,000 people. Fortified with state-of-the-art acoustic walls and fabric, a proscenium, lattice ceiling (that can be raised and lowered as per performance specifications) in addition to mobile VIP boxes elegantly curved to emulate the smooth curves of a ship, it is architectural perfection.

When transformed into a concert hall, a series of towers and reflectors on stage and overhead are designed to create an acoustic shell around the orchestra, enabling an impeccable acoustic environment for a perfect sound quality.

Beyond its incontrovertible beauty, it is a technological masterpiece that commands respect for its ingenuity and versatility.

ExteriorUpon arrival, guests are greeted by the venue’s wide-open landscape framed by futuristic skyscrapers and pristine waterways. Despite its aesthetic groundwork as an imitation of a traditional dhow’s shape, the structure’s wall-to-wall glass panes and metal inlays and frames convey a modern elegance that is synonymous with the area.

Beyond its central edifice, Dubai Opera boasts a number of spaces and venues for guests to visit and explore, including a stunning rooftop restaurant and sky garden with views of The Dubai Fountain and the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa.

BackstageThough most will never see it, the illusive magic of Dubai Opera’s backstage is clear. A throng of ballets, concerts, traditional dramas, musicals and events will be staged at this multifaceted arena over the coming months, and this uniquely versatile stage has the ability to satisfy them all. Equipped with a range of mobile stage lights, slips and hidden entrances for stage staff, and a ceiling and floor that shift to meet the specifications of a show, this new addition to Dubai’s culture scene will give dramaturgists the unique ability to compose a drama and direct its representation on a stage-wide scale.

TheatreA cavernous space fitted with reels of stage lights, adjustable walls and ceiling, the beating heart of the Dubai Opera’s colossal structure is its theatre. Equipped with the latest technology and built to accommodate the myriad of performances that will be hosted at this world-class venue, it is a dramaturgist’s dream and an engineering accomplishment. A multi-format arena, its structure and features morph to satisfy the needs of the theatre on a micro and macro level; changing to accommodate the nuances of a particular performance, and on a grander scale, the needs of the theatre itself. The walls, floor and ceiling can be leveled to host banquets, concerts, events, exhibitions as well as traditional shows.

Main HallDubai Opera’s entrance is a tempered grandeur. Its capacious hall, made bigger by its wall-to-wall windows, helps create an impressive space and sets the stage for what lies within the bow of the dhow-shaped structure. While the emirate’s seafaring heritage is clearly conveyed in the dark wooden panels of the theatre, and in the rolling arches of the ceiling and walls, the main hall emulates this theme through its modest, yet specific selection of materials. From the cascade of pearl-like chandeliers and undulating, white panels, reminiscent of frothy waves, the main hall echoes the maritime theme of the Dubai Opera house.

BathroomsThe developers spared no expensive when it came to Dubai Opera’s amenities. Perhaps the most visually eye-catching room, Dubai Opera’s bathrooms are extravagant, with its island of marble sinks accompanied by gigantic tendrils of lights hanging from the ceiling.

Changing RoomsTucked away in the underbelly of Dubai Opera is a network of changing rooms. Large enough to support dozens of staff members, performers, and store props and additional stage items, the lower level provides peace and privacy as well as easy access to the theatre when needed. The changing rooms are airy and minimalistic, akin to those on Broadway with their fluorescent, beaming lights and alabaster tables, with plenty of space for costume changes and fittings.

Curved Wall ConstructionE. SHAHEEN

Design BriefTo design a wall shutter system suitable for a double-sided curved wall 20m high using Superslim Soldiers and GTX beams. Due to the curvature of the wall, pivot cleats need to be provided along with some timber packing. If possible, to consider a climbing wall.

Design ChallengesUsing the 2D drawings, developing the shutters for the curved wall started by breaking it into semi circles.

The first design for the wall was done from floor to floor pour heights in five stages. While reviewing these drawings, lot of discrepancies were discovered, since the curvature of the wall was not constant, and the wall was curving in both directions, and there could not be any typical shutters which will be for re-use, and a lot of timber fabrication works were required for fitting into the geometry of the wall.

3D ModelWith the help of 3D model, the formwork 3D drawings were developed, which helped in better understanding of the “twisted shutters”. The curved walls at the back side and the front side were broken down into four stages, and the general arrangement of the shutter was laid out.

Upon getting an approval on the general arrangement, a site inspection was done with

the design team involved to check the accuracy of the location of the coordinates. A lot of issues were solved after this inspection, and it gave the design team a much better understanding of the movement of the curved wall horizontally, the pouring sequence and the locations on the base to keep the supports for the shutter. The final 3D model formed the basis for developing the general arrangement drawings for all four stages, and producing the fabrication drawings.

Each stage was divided into a certain number of shutters depending on the length and curvature of the wall. These shutters started with the series 100, 200, 300 and 400 for the four stages. Individual detailing of all these shutters with the timber packing was done for the fabrication of timber on site.

Timber Fabrication DrawingsWhen the levels, openings, base support and pouring sequence for a shutter were sorted, timber fabrication drawings were developed.

Curved Wall Construction

The details on these drawings had to be very precise and named clearly for the carpenters on site to understand them properly. Each shutter had more than 70 timber packing detail drawings showing the detail of the timber across the cross section. Since the shutters were twisted, the packing varied from one side to another.

Challenges in Fabrication and Erection of a ShutterAlthough the detailing of the timber was very clear, it was very challenging for the site carpenters and foremen to understand the orientation of the timber packing as per the drawing sheets. The direction of the GTX timber beams and the timber packing had to be done in one way in which the GTX beam had to always be at the bottom, and followed the same throughout. The dimensions mentioned on the sheet for each packing were kept at the start-centre-end, and the rest of the timber was done with planar.

There were close to six people working in one team that was only preparing the timber packers. Another team of ten people was fixing these packers on to the already prepared shutters of Superslim Soldier, GTX beam and Pivot Cleat set. To speed up the progress, more teams were added.

Involvement of JoineryAlthough the detailing of the timber was very clear, it still took a lot of time and manpower on site to fabricate these timbers. With approximately 20 people working on the fabrication of the timbers, only one shutter was able to be fabricated on site per day. The only way to get the fabrication quicker was to involve joinery.

After understanding the details of the timber, the joinery immediately started the work for the fabrication on its CNC machine. All the shutter fabrication drawings were sent to the joinery in AutoCAD format, which were fed directly to the CNC machine, and the whole process was quicker and smoother. These timbers were then individually named and delivered to site. The site personnel would then just fix these timbers on to the standard shutters that have already been made. The joinery was able to deliver more than two shutters per day.

Final ProductWith more than four months of a dedicated design team working solely on the curved wall design and fabrication drawings, along with constant site support and training for the erection of the shutters for the curved wall, and the careful and smooth execution of the work, the final product is a curved wall in two directions which is not just marvelous to look at, but something to be proud of for everyone who has been a part of it.

The Dubai Opera House is located at the edge of the Dubai Fountain; the theatre building can be used for a variety of functions. The changes in the form of the auditorium between theatre, concert and flat floor mode can be made quickly. All three modes can be achieved with a minimum of compromise to each of the functions. The auditorium and stage offer tremendous challenges and opportunities. Using technology and creative design techniques, the auditorium layout is very flexible, which is both practical and attractive.

Theatre / Opera ModeThe 2,000 seat theatre is designed primarily for touring musical productions, but would also be suitable for other live performance types, including opera, ballet and contemporary music. All seats are as close to the stage as possible maximizing sight lines. The room height allows show-lighting bridges and suspension grids disguised above floating ceiling elements. Large platform lifts in front of the proscenium arch provide flexibility of the orchestra pit providing combinations for both small musicals and a larger pit for opera and ballet. These lifts can be raised to stage level extending the stage into the auditorium for other entertainment shows.

• Banquets and weddings.

• Receptions and awards ceremonies.

• Conferences, exhibitions and corporate events.

• Popular amplified music.

• Dance and fashions shows.

• The largest events will accommodate 1,000 seated guests.

In addition to the larger scale events, there will be many other activities of differing sizes and capacities and a range of different configurations.

EWasit Gas Project

R. CHOUHAIBER / K. YACOUB

The Wasit Gas Program is aimed to develop the Arabiyah and Hasbah non-associated gas fields by processing around 2,500 MMSCFD of gas feed. The project is mainly divided into four packages, in addition to several other packages covering the project infrastructure, site preparation, fence, communication, pipelines and offshore works.

CCC’s scope of work is the construction of Wasit Gas Project, Package 1, Inlet facilities. Work involves piping fabrication and erection, equipment erection, civil works, steel structure erection, electrical and instrumentation, painting and insulation.

A Brief Description of the Work ChallengesIn the civil works the main challenge in the mechanical project was constructing over 130 oily water manholes some of which were over eight meters deep although the size did not exceed 1.2 x 1.2 meters with close proximity to buildings and structural steel pipe racks requiring also dewatering.

Yet the biggest challenge was building a lift station 23 x 24 meters 12 meters deep just three meters away from a 2,000 ton building. Eight dewatering pumps and multi-layers of sheet piling reinforced with 400 x 400mm beams and bracing were used to be able to complete the excavation.

In the piping works the biggest challenge was in heavy wall piping that represented an obstacle in welding and especially in erection. The scope of welding included 20’’ to 56” heavy wall spools of 37,000 Dia Inch divided as such 20,000 DI thicknesses between 25 and 39 mm and 17,000 DI between 40 and 71 mm with spools weighing over 40 tons to be erected in confined structural steel places. This led to installing many additional temporary huge supports; this not having been considered during engineering for erection.

These temporary supports were kept until after hydro-testing since the structural steel was not designed to take the load of the water used for testing. An example is a 12 meter of 56” straight piece of pipe weighing 20 tons would weigh 39

tons when filled with water. Hundreds of meters of pipe racks were loaded with straight runs and fabricated spools at different levels. RT was another challenge for such huge size heavy wall joints in a way that it had to be studied carefully in order to have access to inside the pipes for placing the radioactive source since placing it outside with such pipe size and thickness is not useful.

In addition, CCC was awarded the inlet area project at 0% progress after MMG’s withdrawal with 1.5 years behind the rest of Wasit Program other areas. When civil works started in the CCC inlet area other plant areas were already in the process of installing equipment and erecting piping. Starting from behind for such an essential area for plant start-up not mentioning the delays in piping material delivery was an uphill battle for all WGPP workers and management. Fortunately, with persistence, commitment and team spirit, CCC was able to meet all milestones set by Aramco after dividing the inlet area into useful priorities that led to gas introduction and finally successful completion.

Yet the biggest surprise of the project came when we were pushed into working in a totally new scope of Mono Ethyl Glycol (MEG) area which was a late Aramco introduced process requirement to prevent the hydration in the main offshore pipeline when the sea temperature drops below 5C. Due to this, the concentration shifted on completing Train 300 of MEG 4 trains with no proper QC and engineering records from the designer. The situation was more like trying to solve a puzzle before starting construction works. Yet again, with the full commitment of the CCC personnel, Aramco special efforts on inspection process, mobilizing in a short notice anther 250 piping skilled workers and working day and night, we were able to meet the milestone in completing MEG train 300 mechanical and piping works in a two month period.

Train 300 between welding and erection contained over 38,000 DI and 240 test-packs in addition to clearing over 2,000 exception items. Completing MEG train 300 put CCC’s capabilities on the line in front of Aramco and yet again CCC was able to meet this challenge.

SCCC’s Journey with Aramco

Saudi Arabia

M. QADDOURA

Saudi Aramco has been and will continue to be our best client in Saudi Arabia, giving us a constant stream of work that has not abated for more than five decades.

CCC has executed 115 projects in Saudi Arabia out of which 57 projects were for Saudi Aramco. The value of projects executed for Aramco is around $6 billion.

Our relation with Aramco spans a period of more than 60 years, starting in 1955 when we constructed a 20km 30 inch diameter pipeline at Uthmaniyah.

Since then, CCC has executed important projects for Aramco such as:

• East-West Pipeline in 1985.

• Uthmaniyah GOSPS 4 & 13 and UA4 Pipeline in 1990.

• Hawiyah GOSPS 2,3&4 in 1992.

• Ras Tanura Refinery in 1995.

• Shaybah Producing Facility and Infrastructure in 1996.

• Haradh Gas facilities in 2001.

• Qatif GOSP1 in 2002.

• Khursaniyah Gas Plant and Khursaniyah GOSP in 2005.

• Wasit Gas Plant Inlet Facility in 2013.

• Jizan Refinery Packages 4&5 in 2013.

• Jizan Integrated Gasification Sulfur Recovery & Ash Removal in 2015.

• Jizan Utility Package 13 in 2015.

In addition to the above, CCC has worked for Aramco where Aramco was in joint venture with other large companies, such as Rabigh Olefins Plant and Rabigh Water, Steam & Power Plant for PetrorRabigh in 2005 and the HYCO Ammonia and Hydrogen Peroxide Projects for Sadara in 2012 and 2013 respectively.

The relation with Aramco flourished in the nineties with the award of Shaybah (both the infrastructure and the central producing facilities) followed by Haradh Gas Plant which was selected by MCI Model Project of 2003 and then the Khursaniyah projects and the PMI Project of the Year in 2004.

After a lull in relations with Aramco for three years (after the completion of the Khursaniyah Project in 2008) CCC managed to return in strength in 2011 by helping Aramco build

King Abdullah Stadium in Jeddah which was appreciated by Aramco: this was followed by the award of the Wasit Gas Plant and the Jizan Refinery Projects.

Aramco still has in its 10 year plan many projects to be awarded and will invest $300 billion in oil and gas projects. In 2017 large projects such as Harad and Hawiyah Gas Compression and increment processing plants will be up for tender with a budget of around $7 billion.

One of the most important reasons for CCC’s success and the sustainability of work with Aramco has been CCC’s ability to deliver good quality projects with good relations established among their top executives including the ex-Presidents Abdullah Juma and ex-President Khaled Al Faleh and Aramco top managers such as their VP’s Majed Mugla and Fahad Helal, their GMs Abdul Rahman Al Wahab, Saad Dossari and Mutaz Al Mashouk, and their Project Directors Nazmi Naser, Abdullah Okab and recently Bader Al Dulimi and Ramez Habibal (also with Aramco Project Managers such as Qais Abdul Baki, Salman Al Ardi, Ali Abu Ali, Ahmad Sleim, Khalid Dossari and Nazih Kurae).

Our good relations with our EPC partners such as JGC, Technip, Bechtel, Saipem and Snamprogetti have also played a positive role in executing successful projects for Aramco.

Tribute goes to all CCC project managers and project directors who helped in executing successful projects for Aramco and for the good relations made with Aramco executives by CCC’s high level management.

EU Arab World Summit: Partners for Growth and Development

The owners of CCC felt the moral obligation to support Greece during the continuous economic crisis so as to boost markets and attract investments, thus promoting Greece’s significant role between European and Arab countries. Therefore, an entity was created in order to plan, organize and realize this promising vision and consisted of people who worked very hard for a period of more than eight months in order to accomplish this special project.

This timely summit succeeded in promoting dialogue between the European Union and Arab countries whilst showcasing the opportunities for enhancing collaboration and sustainable growth on business and economic levels. Regarding Greece, the main purpose was to emphasize and promote specific projects and investment opportunities for the country. Special presentations were made by the International Economic Relations Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Similar presentations were also made by Enterprise Greece, the official agency of the Greek State, the Ministry of Economy, Development and Tourism, TAIPED (Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund), the Ministry of Public Work and by various organizations. These agencies had their own promotional stands during the summit in order to exhibit their work and inform the participants.

CCC Executive Vice Chairman and Chairman of Al-Iktissad Wal-Aamal Group, Tawfic Khoury (who personally made great efforts in order for the summit to take place) opened the proceedings being followed by the Greek Prime Minister and other European and Arab officials.

The summit acted as an important platform for officials and representatives of the highest levels (both from the EU and the Arab countries) to advance shared projects, experiences and knowledge between the two regions. The agenda of the summit covered two big sectors: the economy (focusing on investments, energy, infrastructure and trade) and the political sector (where discussions about major issues, such as security, immigration and political stability took place).

The Prime Minister of Greece, Alexis Tsipras, delivered the opening speech of the summit while members of the Hellenic Government addressed the event, along with Arab government officials, presidents and ministers, the EU Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos; the Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides and many other officials.

The EU Arab World Summit was widely covered by local and international media including TV networks, print and web media. More than 100 articles have been published in print media while the event was announced in more than 1,800 web news items.

In conclusion, it was a highly successful summit which signified the need for these types of initiatives. Additionally, CCC achieved its goal in promoting Greece’s will for development and investment opportunities whilst highlighting the key role of the country as a connecting actor between the European and Arab world.

It should be mentioned that by the end of the EU Arab World Summit, everyone had a good word about the success of this event, focusing on the excellence of the organization, the high-level of participants and the fruitful results of this important summit, whilst looking forward to the next EU Arab World Summit.

Helping the Athens Hospice for the Disabled CSR COMMITTEE

Since 2014, the CSR Committee has been supporting the Hospice for the Disabled (Asilo Aniaton) in Athens, Greece. The hospice is a not-for-profit charitable organization that has been providing medical and nursing care to patients with chronic conditions for more than 120 years. The hospice accepts people who are suffering from an incurable illness, are left paraplegic, hemiplegic or tetraplegic by strokes, suffer from neurological disorders, or have had severe accidents and as a result, it is impossible for them to look after themselves. Functioning with no state support of any kind in the current bleak economic climate and taxation system, the hospice continues to serve the community despite the difficulties. Most recently, to support their cause, CCC coordinated a donation of food supplies.

Supporting the “Friends of the Child” NurseryCSR COMMITTEE

CSR Athens Office continued its efforts to sponsor theatre visits and other programmes for the children of the Friends of the Child nursery.

The Friends of the Child association is a charity organization that has been providing widespread support to hundreds of families for more than 25 years. Among the several programmes it carries out, it maintains a nursery for vulnerable children who come from families facing social and financial difficulties.

With the help of CCC, the children attended a variety of activities. An example of an educational programme was that of the olive tree where the children learned about the olive, its role in nutrition and its symbolic dimension in mythology and customs. Fun activities took place where the children focused on grapes; they discovered the harvest process, participated in grape stomping and prepared grape-must cookies. These activities took place among others such as theatrical plays, puppet shows and drama games.

Such experiences are an important mental stimulus for the children who would otherwise have little to no opportunity to participate is these programmes.

iFALCONA. BOUALWAN

ObjectiveEquipment is the bread and butter of a construction/contracting company’s work. Monitoring its operation and enhancing its productivity are key factors in keeping the work at hand on course and ensuring timely delivery. Equipment is stock-full of sensors: seatbelts, fuel gauges, speedometers, engine indicators and so on. In a sense, a piece of equipment can always convey some data about its well-being, status and performance. So how can one benefit from listening and ultimately responding?

Business Value iFALCON, Intelligent Fleet Analysis and Logistics Control, as its name implies, is all about fleet management. Since it was conceived to service CCC, its target from the start has been to manage the operations of a massive fleet, spanning several countries, continents and management provisions, going by the business mantra:

If you can MEASURE it, You can IMPROVE it.

It might have started off being motivated by requirements from a Health and Safety perspective, such as detecting equipment/driver location, optimizing driving behavior and monitoring driving hours, but it has expanded to provide key data crucial for optimizing various construction operations.

Naturally, PMV is another main consumer of the information iFALCON can generate, benefiting from monitoring utilization levels, countering excessive idling and administering the distribution and allocation of equipment within a single project and across multiple projects, to mention a few.

Moreover, users of iFALCON are not restricted to personnel or departments, but also embrace company-wide systems. MAXIMO Armada, CCC’s implementation of IBM’s Enterprise Asset Management software solution,

represents the perfect use-case for the advantages iFALCON provides. Allowing the custom integration of data across these two systems, both solutions are significantly enhanced. iFALCON retrieves its equipment reference data from the Asset lists, while MAXIMO is automatically fed telematics data, such as location, odometer and engine hour values, which assist in scheduling maintenance operations, issuing work orders, improving on preventive maintenance and minimizing downtime.

The latest entry into iFALCON’s consumer group is the internal earthworks simulation system. It makes use of the actual values accumulated during the fleet’s operations to amend its assumed simulation parameters and arrive at more accurate estimate calculations that better serve their goal of improving the productivity of earthworks activities.

All of the above is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of the avenues where iFALCON can be utilized to deliver value, reduce expenditure and be incorporated into the organization’s mode of operation.

TelematicsIn the simplest terms, telematics is the mechanism that collects data available from the equipment and transmits it to a remote receiver. The receiver then is tasked with interpreting the data, storing it, maintaining it and providing the tools to analyze and report it. However, implementing telematics is no easy task. The variety of the sources of data and the difficulty in interpreting them is the main source for the lack of usage of telematics in fleet management[1]. CCC has a mega fleet of equipment and undoubtedly a mixed one. A mixed fleet immediately translates to a mix of telematics tools.

GYiFALCON

Let’s take a simple scenario over a single site: the fleet of equipment ranges from construction equipment from Caterpillar and Volvo, to heavy-duty vehicles like Mercedes and IVECO, to light transportation vehicles such as Nissan and HYNO and even more. That is not to mention any non-mobile assets like generators and compressors down to lamp posts, which should also be monitored.

Then the task falls to the project or PMV manager who would need to either track a single piece of equipment’s location or generate a report over the entire project’s fleet. The procedure to accomplish this task would involve the following: mixed sources of data, multiple software logins, different user interfaces, varying reports generated.

This is only the scope for a single project; expanding it to cover all projects under CCC’s umbrella becomes a mega-job requiring a department on its own. This is where iFALCON shines.

With iFALCON, the hassle is removed and abstracted into a single solution that allows the user to manage equipment of different manufacturers using a variety of telematics devices simultaneously without being tied to a single hardware vendor or model:

• Making all equipment data speak one language.

• Monitoring the entire mixed fleet in one place.

• Managing equipment as a fleet and no longer as independent brands.

In addition, iFALCON transforms the seemingly disjointed data, from all these sources, into understandable unified measures and actionable work items to service multiple departments across the organization.

System OverviewiFALCON provides a single solution that caters for fleet management in the construction sector. It supports the ability to capture and process the positional, operational and diagnostic data of vehicles or equipment and to trigger a response when needed. Its user friendly role-based web interface makes iFALCON the ideal system for different stakeholders from site supervisors all the way to senior executives. Moreover, the set of reports and business intelligence tools this system exposes can be used to analyze the received data for balancing equipment workloads, optimizing performance and for assistance in preventive maintenance and decision support in fleet-related strategies.

ConclusionWith the assistance and support of various departments across the organization, the aim for iFALCON is to cover as much of CCC’s extensive fleet as possible, integrating with more telematics providers when available and offering its own subsidized telematics device as an alternative to compete with the other providers in the market. The main focus going forward remains building on its synergy with other company systems, enriching the web of collaboration and expanding on its user base to culminate in more and more profit across CCC.

CCC’s Sustainability Report 2016 (Covering 2014-2015 Activities) has been officially certified by the GRI for aligning report content with the G4 GRI Standards and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

CCC is the first construction company in the Gulf to undergo this successful audit.

The GRI is an international independent organization, with a vision to foster a truly sustainable world economy by making sustainability reporting standard practice. It has developed the most trusted and referenced sustainability reporting framework to guide organizations in communicating their economic, environmental and social performance. Currently, more than 80% of the world’s major corporations use the GRI guidelines to report their sustainability efforts.

In 2015, when the era of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) came to conclusion, the SDGs (see the table) were introduced as the action plan of the transformative 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 17 universal goals address urgent global challenges such as poverty, education, gender equality, water and energy use, climate change and sustainable economic growth. Recognizing that the private sector will determine the success of the SDGs, the UN has explicitly invited corporate actors to tackle these challenges with innovation and creativity.

CCC’s report was developed based on internationally established standards and values, such as the GRI-G4 Guidelines, the ten principles of the UN Global Compact and the SDG Compass (a tool to help businesses take action on the SDGs put together by the GRI, the UN Global Compact and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD)).

Our sustainability report has undergone and successfully completed the GRI assessment procedure for aligning published content with the GRI framework and the SDGs as well as communicating our impact and contributions towards these goals. The “GRI SDG Mapping Service” organizational mark (inserted in the report’s GRI Index) is the formal confirmation of this achievement. The GRI Index specifies the linkage between the GRI disclosures and SDGs and their page location. The G4 GRI disclosure

labels/icons within the report indicate that the particular section elaborates on how CCC is addressing the relevant SDG.

The global commitment towards the SDGs and the Paris Climate Change Agreement as well as the dramatic increase of companies reporting their sustainability efforts confirm that the sustainability agenda is maturing. As greater responsibility from companies is expected, with this endorsement CCC showcases advanced corporate sustainability reporting and commitment to global goals.

ESMy Journey with CCC

Don’t say ‘Adieu’ but rather say ‘Au revoir’

A. RASHIDI

Like the blink of an eye, faster than the DOS blinker compiler that I am still using to this day for our Legacy Payroll Program, more than 34 years have passed since I joined CCC.

It all started back in October 1982 when I was called on demand by Fawzi Germanus, Area General Manager Saudia, with an urgent task to develop the Payment Certificates application which was requested by the Riyadh Project RSS Client. I was in Beirut at the time and we were still facing the weight of the Israeli invasion in Lebanon. Thus, I joined CCC immediately.

Within a short period of time, I completed the application using COBOL and it was complemented afterwards with an Arabic version. I still recall the wording of our late RSS Project Manager, Ibrahim Shammas: “Despite some obstacles at the beginning, the application is now running smooth like water in a river.”

Following that, and during Jamal Nakhleh’s visit to Riyadh, Germanus recommended that we automate the financial reports produced by projects and area offices for Athens Office: the RP1 and AR1 Reports.

I did this by linking data from our running Ledger and Projmon applications and submitting the reports in a professional and better-looking format than the manual ones. This paved the way for our core and financial applications to be re-developed and implemented.

Although I was still based in Riyadh, my duties extended to service all CCC areas and I

started reporting functionally to ISD at the Athens Office. At that time, the era of personal computers and servers was already underway and ISD management advocated moving from the centralized mini-computers-based architecture to the new flexible model. Existing and critical financial and non-financial data had to be shifted and converted with minimal risk. I started the exercise in Riyadh and used integrated hardware-software tools for linking our centralized NCR mini-computers to new PCs. The task was a success.

I did the same in Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, and Oman area offices. As a result, all our existing NCRs were phased-out and an immediate and extremely important advantage surged-out: we began installing PCs directly on projects’ sites and running local automation.

In terms of software, the Dbase revolution began and we pioneered its use for redeveloping our

core applications. The delivery of newly-born applications developed in Dbase was inspiring and had numerous uses in sectors such as:

• Accounting

• Payroll

• Projmon

• Plants Fixed Assets, Other Assets and Plant Billing

• RP1 and AR1 Reports

• Cashflow

Without a doubt, my favourite area (and where I left a great footprint), was the Accounting Package. Taking advantage of each visit and each business trip to projects, listening to the requests and needs of our accountants, and in permanent coordination with Group Accounts, the application kept growing and included the most important features available in the best accounting packages.

Multi-currency, dual-based, multi-chart, multi-trial balance, printing in Arabic and other local languages were all incorporated.

In the mid-1990s, the application was taken over by another colleague in ISD, Athens Office, and was upgraded to a new architecture and is now one of CCC’s big achievements: well-known under the name of Midas, as adopted by Zuhair Haddad. I recall a meeting in which Zuhair Haddad mentioned that ISD should take on the role of salespeople; listening to our users and discussing our products and applications in the hope that they will use them. This concept resonated with me and I have kept that approach when dealing with our users and clients.

Towards the end of the 1990s, CCC was awarded its first mega project called KMWC, in Kazakhstan. Salim Layyous, a non-conservative and truly bold visionary, encouraged us to use the best and fastest automated methods in transferring salaries to home countries for more than 4,000 employees working on KMWC. He had already established contacts with some big international banks and after several meetings with one of the lead banks, we reached an unprecedented agreement for using their fully-automated online solution for international transfer of salaries.

The bank was in search for an international company that had a large number of online monthly transactions and CCC was an ideal fit. During the negotiations, an idea came to me that I proposed to the bank and as a result we got the agreement at an unbeatable price.

We undertook an exercise in 2006 at the request of Zuhair Haddad, to estimate how much we saved by using the Citidirect system: the figure exceeded one million dollars! Fortunately, the same pricing agreement is still valid and is still being used, although at a lower scale for divers at CCC-Underwater Eng. Since then, automating the transfer of salaries, whether locally for each Area or for offshore transfers, became a standard in CCC.

After some time, in the UAE and later in Saudi, the government decided to automate the salary payments of all UAE employees through a system controlled by a central bank and the Ministry of Labour. The new law was called WPS (Wages Protection System). However, the implementation decision was hasty and consequently, mistakes were made by all banks but CCC was able to implement it with a minimal number of failures.

In CCC, one important directive that is always desired by our top executives is to share resources for cost saving purposes. I am proud to have contributed greatly in the creation and support of the Payroll Processing Unit (PPU) that belongs to Group Accounts. PPU staff maintain an advanced level of expertise in coordinating with banks for automating the transfer of salaries to any country.

Last but not least, I have to mention that I was called on by Nafez Husseini a few years ago to work on a financial claim related to a change in law affecting Payroll and pertaining to WoodGroup-CCC in Muscat. There had been little progress achieved and the situation had reached a stalemate. I have to admit that it was a very challenging endeavour, but with hard work and dedication, I am proud that my efforts contributed to a multi-million dollar compensation rewarded to WoodGroup-CCC.

There is no way that I can summarize my 34 years with CCC in a few pages; over the years there were experiences and lessons that have impacted me and helped shape my personality. My visits to projects and my business trips provided me with an opportunity to grow as a professional and allowed me to establish and foster many friendships along the way.

One of the core values of CCC is its family-like environment and it is probably the main reason for its historical and continued success. As I open up the next chapter in my life journey, I hope others will cherish those values because if all individuals strive to grow and succeed, CCC as a whole will be guaranteed a bright future.

An immense thank you to all, and best of luck.
