COVER STAR Michelle ReaderBased at the Barbican Arts Group Trust Blackhorse Lane Studios, Michelle Reader reuses waste materials to create unique figurative recycled sculptures. Her creations sometimes have mechanical elements, using the working parts of old toys, clocks or other objects.

This summer she has run a project called ‘Wildlife REworked’ working with local familes to create sculptures inspired by local wildlife. The resulting beasties have already been exhibited at The Mill and can now be seen at the Vestry House Museum until 8 September.

Michelle Reader is one of the 26 professional artists based in the Barbican Arts Group Trust Blackhorse Lane Studios. She will be showing new work next month as part of the Behind Closed Doors exhibition.

The exhibition will feature eclectic pieces by Barbican Arts Group Trust artists, selected to explore notions of privacy, intimacy and exclusion – privacy of space, intimacy of scale, feelings of voyeurism.

AUGUST seemed to be the month when many people I know, admittedly mainly with families,

escaped on their holidays. As a consequence the organisers of many of our regular events took a well deserved break too. Now September’s here, pretty much everyone’s back, refreshed, and now I’ve been inundated with the most listings I’ve ever received, hopefully meaning there’s something for everyone in this issue. Unfortunately with the exception of fitness classes it would take a whole other magazine to feature all the regular team sports that go around Walthamstow. But as the E List likes to celebrate all things community, I must mention that Walthamstow’s very own football club, Waltham Forest F.C., is returning to the town after 6 years exile in Ilford (due to a lack of a ground). It’s a real community club who are looking to involve local youngsters by fielding an Under 21s team next season in a Reserve League. The adult team play in the Ryman League Division 1 North and this month will take up residence at Wadham Lodge in Kitchener Road. Sometimes like me, you might find yourself occasionally straying to the pages of Facebook for a much deserved distraction from work. Its pages are full of Walthamstow themed groups focusing on various aspects of the town both good and bad. One of my favourites this year has been Spotted Walthamstow which with some canny editing has managed to give voice to what irks, gladdens or merely perplexes Walthamstow residents in equal measure. The editing means it doesn’t get taken over by any one agenda and also ensures the topics are constantly fast moving and entertaining. Already a fan I’m delighted Spotted has agreed to produce a column of their greatest bits each month for the E List. So this month if you’re interested in what became of the giant inflatable banana that went AWOL on Hoe Street turn to page 11.

Finally there has been much often heated discussion recently about the positive and negative aspects of gentrification. At least some comfort can be found in the fact that London’s Evening Standard is remaining steadfastly immune to Walthamstow’s charms. This week in a spread on how to get on to the property ladder it said that once all other areas had been explored then one might consider Walthamstow as ‘bargains’ [sic] could be had if you were prepared to “look for a place where no one else wants to live”. With press like this London’s best kept secret, where so many people actually love living, will hopefully remain secret a while longer.

Where are you originally from, and briefly describe your journey to E17? I’m a Scot, born in Glasgow. I spent my early childhood in Derbyshire and Cheshire, moving back to Glasgow to go to grammar school. Later I could have gone to art school but instead went to drama college, the RSAMD (a decision I occasionally regret!). Then south to Richmond in the mid 60’s, then Dalston in 1986 before settling in Walthamstow in 2007.

I’m bi-lingual and have used a Scots accent in many roles. Yes, I was nurse on a bike (Morse). Yes, I was Mrs McReedy (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe), Yes, I was one of many barmaids at The Rovers Return and Yes - I am The Great One, the Biggest Spider in The Universe (Dr Who). My kids were mortified... “our mum is going to KILL the Doctor!” Well not quite - I just changed him from Jon Pertwee to Tom Baker. I did tons of radio but my first love was theatre - I toured with many small scale, left wing companies. Hull Truck and Monstrous Regiment, as well as lots of rep. I worked with some terrific people, it was hard but loads of fun. I fell out of love in the late 90’s, and when I was offered a 3 month temp job with an antique restoring business, I stayed 12 years! I don’t believe in saying never - so if some ancient, almost silent part turns up who knows?

Once I had a normal job I started a creative writing course and began writing poetry. I now belong to the very lively and supportive Forest Poets and I’m able to indulge myself as a “performer” doing readings with them.

You have been part of several local community groups. Do you think the sense of community is strong? I think a common cause often brings people together. I joined the William Morris Gallery campaign and the Save St James St Library Campaign straightaway because I was very committed - but it was also a way of integrating and meeting like minded people. I think there is a very strong sense of community here - look at the success of Stella’s 7days4Stow and all the amazing things that have come out of that.

You have been involved in The Mill since it opened in 2011. Tell us about it. We are an independent community space, proud of being welcoming and inclusive. We rely on the time, experience and passion of local people - to make things happen! There are numerous activities and opportunities - or start your own. Drop in for a cuppa, or bring your knitting; use the children’s room - or borrow a book from the honesty library. People say they now feel more connected to the neighbourhood. I’m the Arts organiser and encourage people to take part in exhibitions and creative activities generally.

How is the Mill funded and how can local people support it? We rent out the top floor rooms to local social interest businesses and we get room rent from some activities downstairs. People make small but regular donations. We are developing a consultancy arm - to promote the ideals of The Mill and support other community groups. Later this year we will be launching a Friends scheme and the council will match the first 100/150 friends. As we need to be constantly on the look out for longterm funding streams we would welcome any one with expertise in this field ! We have 3 paid staff and everyone else, myself included, is a volunteer.

We have just been awarded a certificate “To all the Volunteers for achieving the Impossible!” - this is for every single person who has given time and skill since April 2011. Big thanks to all of you - without you the Mill wouldn’t be the vibrant place it is today.

Last month I wrote about a chance meeting with a young man from Sri Lanka, he was in E17 to visit his brother and I helped him out with some directions. Not long after the E list was printed, I received an email from someone who told me “You are off your head mate, he was probably illegal. You lot that spout about how great it is here should take your blinkers off and see Walthamstow for the hole it really is”. OK, I confess, this isn’t exactly what the email said, but if I quoted it word for word I don’t think this article would get published.

A few days after I got the message I was out in the garden drinking a cup of tea, it was fi rst thing on a Sunday morning and I was listening to the bells of St Saviours ring. There was a very gentle heat in the morning sun and I was feeling pretty relaxed. I was so relaxed that when a car fl ew down Markhouse Road with its stereo booming so loud that the car was shaking; I nearly jumped out of my skin. As the sound of the church bells and music from the car started to fi ght for airspace, I said to myself “This is Walthamstow” a place that can be quiet and peaceful, and loud and urban all at the same time, and I love it because of this variety.

So am I wearing blinkers? I don’t think so. Walthamstow, like everywhere, has its problems, and if you live in E17 those problems are plain to see. Sometimes terrible things happen here, and sometimes amazing things happen here.

Feeling passionate about the place you live doesn’t mean you are wearing blinkers, it just means you celebrate the good, and do what you can to fi x the not so good. I for one will

continue to spout about how much I like Walthamsow because at the end of the day, if those of us that live here don’t care about E17, who will?

‘When did it become acceptable for nice pubs in Walthamstow to turn into middle class crèches at the weekend for the Guardian reading population?!’

Claire: There are plenty of pubs that aren’t child-friendly; you could always go there :-)

Carolyn: Pubs are for adults, not children, in my opinion. If parents want to go somewhere with their children/toddlers, they should go to a cafe.

Siouxie: Kids should not be allowed in pubs - end of.

Christopher: I don’t personally hate kids but don’t appreciate parents who seem to be oblivious to the fact that other people are not as fond of their offspring as they are, and don’t seem to care that their children might be annoying other people.

Grace: What are people who have kids supposed to do? Live on another planet? Move to Muswell Hill? We need to drink too.

‘Every so often something happens that reminds you, if needed, how basically good most people are. Walking past the coffee stall at my local station (Walthamstow Central) the guy who works there chased after me and said that I dropped a tenner some weeks ago and he just saw me so wanted to give it back. How good is that? It almost brought a tear to my eye.’

Ric: To all those moaning about this, go and live on Broadway f**king Market. This is one of the few surviving real working class bits of London still on the tube map, that’s why I moved here. If I want posh grub I’ll get on a train to Liverpool Street or the tube into town. Jesus! If all your gonna do is moan about the shops why the f**k did you move here?
