DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENING
Purpose of Developmental Screening
■ Our purpose is to ensure early identification of developmental delays/concerns in
young children.
■ Connecting at risk children to early intervention services
– Early Steps (birth-3)
– Child Find (3-5)
– Community Resources
■ Provide parental support through case management services
– Home visits
– Provide developmental activities
How do we do that?
■ Phone Screening/Triage
– Ages and Stage Questionnaire
– Parent Interview
– Outside diagnostic reports
■ Site-Based Screening
– 12 yearly site-based screenings throughout Hillsborough County
– Vision, Hearing, Height/Weight, Overall Development, Social Emotion, Speech, and Language
■ Case Management Follow-Up Services
– Follow-up support through phone calls and home visits.

Our Goal & Target Population
■ To build capacity in Hillsborough County’s early childcare community of inclusive
practices for children with special needs to experience high quality care.
■ Childcare providers serving children birth to 5 years of age and/or school age
children up to 8 years old in after school care with an IEP in Hillsborough County
■ Children in childcare in Hillsborough County.

What Is Infant Mental Health?
Importance of the First 1000 Days
• A pivotal time in a child’s development
• Physical / Social / Emotional
• First experiences of how the world works
• Optimal time for early intervention
• Auditory, visual, language areas and frontal lobe are most active in synapse development
• Most vulnerable time for child maltreatment
• Approximately 50% of children in the dependency system are birth – 5yrs.
• A time of the most opportunity and vulnerability of the developing brain
• Emotional experiences become embedded in the developing brain’s architecture
• Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study links the relationship between adverse early childhood experiences and physical & emotional health problems in adulthood
