The East Highland Way

Description: Walk from the West border of the

Highlands to the East on this future classic of

Long Distance Walking. Revel in the beauty and

solitude that the trail brings and lose yourself in

the history of this less travelled part of Scotland.

Walking Days: 6

Nights: 7

Average Daily Distance: 13 miles

Grade: Moderate

The East Highland Way stretches from Fort

William to Aviemore, traversing the Highlands.

To make this trip accessible to accommodation

we have arranged a few transfers in order to

open up this beautiful area to our customers.

Arrive in Fort William

Your first night’s accommodation will be in Fort

William, the outdoor capital of the Highlands.

Famous for its proximity to Ben Nevis there are a

multitude of activities and sights in the area. Fort

William is easily accessible by bus or train from

Glasgow which takes approximately 3-4 hours.

Fort William to Spean Bridge—11

Miles

A relatively flat, easy start to the walk means that

you have a little time to explore Fort William

before heading off to Spean Bridge. You will find

the paths well made and solid on this first day.

Spean Bridge to Inverlair—11 Miles

Starting off on the same forest paths you will

soon get into the walking, following the River

Spean. A great quiet day of forest walking will

eventually lead you to Inverlair where we have

arranged for you to be collected and taken back

to Spean Bridge for your overnight stop.

Inverlair to Feagour—20 Miles

You will be dropped back off at Inverlair this

morning to begin the longest days walking.

Though the distance is long, the walking is pretty

easy after a bit of uphill walking in the morning.

You will skirt the edge of Loch Moy before

walking along the banks of the stunning Loch

Laggan. Ending up in Feagour, we have again

arranged for you to be collected and transferred

to your overnight accommodation in nearby

Laggan.

Feagour to Newtonmore—15 Miles

After your transfer back down to Feagor, you

start the walking day with an ascent up to the

Pictish Fort of Dun da lamh. The amazing views

here provide a stunning start to the day. From

there the walk levels off until Cluny Castle when

it starts to ascend again. Another great feeling of

wilderness today as you walk along the banks of

the River Calder before descending into the town

of Newtonmore for the night.

Newtonmore to Kincraig—12 Miles

Level walking for most of today makes for a

lovely walk. You will take in the Ruthven

Barracks and cross over the powerful River

Tromie today as well as spending a bit of time in

the RSPB reserve on the Insh Marshes. Joining

up with the shorter Badenoch Way will eventually

lead you back down to Kincraig for your

penultimate evening.

Kincraig to Aviemore—11 Miles

The final section of the East Highland Way is one

of the most spectacular. You start off by walking

up to the Frank Bruce Sculpture Park which is

well worth spending some time at. From there

you climb up through the Cairngorm National

park through ancient bog forest. Your decent

towards Aviemore is broken by the eerie beauty

of the Castle of Loch an Eilein, where you should

try shouting to the ghost of the Wolf of Badenoch

who still haunts the ruin. Listen carefully for the

strange echo that comes back. Aviemore is a

delightful wee town to finish in and toast a

wonderful trip.

Onward Travel

Aviemore is well connected to all major Scottish

cities by rail and bus.

Accommodation

One of the highlights of this tour is the high

standard of the accommodation. We specifically

choose the hotels, inns, guesthouses and B&B’s

to ensure that you enjoy every minute of your

stay. They all offer a warm welcome to walkers,

traditional hospitality and delicious local food.

Single Rooms

This independent walking holiday is not available

to solo walkers due to the high costs of baggage

transfer. Single rooms are available for parties of

three or more that require them and a single

supplement will be required to cover the

additional costs incurred when booking single

rooms.

Meals

A hearty breakfast is included each morning.

Lunch and dinner are not included so you are

free to choose from the available options. Most of

your accommodations will more than happy to

provide a packed lunch on request and this can

be booked on arrival. Dinner is available either at

your accommodation or nearby pubs.

Baggage Transfer

Your bags will be transferred from your

accommodation as per your itinerary and moved

onto your next overnight accommodation. We

ask you to limit your luggage to one bag of up to

20kg per person.

Navigation

The East Highland Way is NOT waymarked and

some degree of navigational skill is required. We

provide a detailed guidebook with route notes,

however should you wish to back this up then we

would recommend purchasing OS Landranger

maps 35, 36, 41 and 42.

Grade

This route is graded moderate as it passes

through some remote country is not waymarked.

Though a good guidebook is provided, navigation

skills may be helpful.

Equipment

Your information pack has a detailed equipment

list which includes standard walking gear such as

good walking boots or shoes, warm and

waterproof clothes and a day pack.

Dogs

Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate

walkers with dogs as many of the

accommodation providers do not accept pets.

Recommended Reading

We provide you with a detailed guidebook and

map but there is a wealth of other information on

the walk.

The East Highland Way website has lots of

information and keeps you up to date with any

path diversions.

Getting to Fort William

Fort William is well serviced by public transport.

The train from Glasgow takes approximately 4

hours and takes in the West Highland Way and a

small part of the East Highland Way. The bus

from Glasgow takes approximately 3 hours.

You can book these respectively on the Scotrail

or Citylink websites.

Returning from Aviemore

Again Aviemore is well service by public

transport being on the main train and bus route

from Glasgow/Edinburgh to Inverness. The bus

and train take approximately 3-4 hours.
