Welcome to the armed Forces edinburgh Proms ConcertI am delighted that we are able to bring the bands, pipes and drums of all 3 services together this evening, in what promises to be a musical extravaganza. Music has been a feature of military life for centuries, whether as a welcome distraction from daily life or as a stirring accompaniment to battle. Sailors have run guns out to the beat of a marine’s drum, soldiers have marched to the sound of the pipes and the stirring strains of the “Dambusters’ March” of course need little introduction.

Tonight’s performance brings you the premier Scottish bands of each Service, in order to raise much needed funds for maritime and military charities. Please do take a moment to read through this programme, which includes information on the 3 charities. Whilst seldom eye-catching, the work of the charities can be little short of life-changing to those helped. Please do help us to help those who give so much for this country.

Thank you so much for your support and I do hope you enjoy the show.

Nick DaviesCaptain Nick Davies, Royal Navy, Seafarers UK.

The Band of Hm royal marines ScotlandDirector of Music - Captain Andy Gregory RM

Although there have been Royal Marines Bands in Scotland since the

late 1930s they were classed as ‘ship bands’ and after the Second World

War were disbanded. In 1960 a Band was formed at HMS CONDOR in

Arbroath. Now based in Rosyth, The Band of HM Royal Marines Scotland

is the only Royal Marines Band stationed north of London. The Band’s

secondary role sees musicians undertaking a variety of duties by sea and

land, including in all the recent major operational deployments. The band

has recently completed Casualty Decontamination training to fulfil their

capability as casualty handlers in operational theatre.

In their distinguishing white helmets, Royal Marines Bands are celebrated

for the quality of their music, visual grandeur and precision drill. On the

concert platform they enjoy a similar reputation ensuring their continuing

popularity with audiences. The Band’s repertoire includes popular

classics, big band, stimulating contemporary works and entertaining solo

features. The Corps of Drums bring movement, colour and the tradition

of ceremonial occasions. Most members of the Band play at least two

instruments; the Band is therefore able to produce a wide variety of band

and ensemble formats.

The Band travels extensively throughout Scotland, Northern Ireland and

northern England. Recent travel abroad has been to the Falkland Islands,

Washington D.C. and Algiers. The Band’s ceremonial duties include the

Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, beating retreat on Horseguards Parade,

ship launches, homecoming parades and remembrance services.

The Band of The royal regiment of ScotlandDirector of Music – Captain Tony Williams

The Royal Regiment of Scotland can boast a musical legacy stretching back

to the days of Mozart. Although the Scottish soldier is inextricably linked

with the imagery of pipes and drums, he has a long tradition of marching

with the military band; as early as 1763 there is mention of a band of music

in the 1st or Royal Regiment of Foot.

In 2006 the Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland was established

to supersede the Lowland and Highland Bands of The Scottish Division.

The role of the band, part of The Corps of Army Music, is to support the

Army and the State and all Ceremonial occasions that occur in Scotland’s

capital city and beyond. These engagements include Garden Parties for the

Royal Family, State Banquets and Guard of Honours at Holyrood Palace,

Edinburgh and Stirling Castles and Balmoral. The Band and its antecedents

have undertaken high profile engagements within the UK and travelled

extensively to Europe, United States of America, China, Cyprus, Malaysia,

Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Kenya.

The band has swiftly established a name for diversity and is one of the

Corps of Army Music’s main proponents of Soul, Folk and Scottish Country

Dance as well as boasting Edinburgh’s premier Dance Band, an excellent

and much requested cover band as well as hard working Fanfare Trumpets

and various chamber ensembles. All members of the band are full-time

musicians but are also trained as soldiers: In 2011 the band deployed twice

to Afghanistan in support of operations.

The RAF Leuchars Pipes and Drums is one of the oldest pipe bands in the

RAF and dates back to 1947. The pipers and drummers are not regular

bandsmen, but volunteers from all ranks and trades, comprising of Squadron

personnel, Support and civilian personnel from the local area. The band

preserves and encourages the piping and drumming traditions of the Royal

Air Force, which can be traced back to the 1920’s.

The RAF Leuchars Pipes and Drums perform at numerous engagements

throughout the year both at home and abroad. Pipers and Drummers

have appeared at venues around the world, including Russia, Africa,

Europe and Australia. The band performs regularly at the Royal Edinburgh

Military Tattoo, and in recent years has also appeared at a range of other

international tattoos (Basel Tattoo, Sydney Tattoo, and the Kremlin Zoria

Tattoo on Red Square in Moscow). It also performs in many other tattoos

in Holland, Belgium and Germany. The band has also had success in

numerous competitions, being placed fifth in the European Championships

in 2009.

The RAF Leuchars Pipes and Drums wear the “Royal Airforce Tartan” and

the distinctive Highland feather bonnets. The band is kindly sponsored by

defence electronics firm SELEX ES.

Formerly in the Royal Navy, Bill is a disabled Falklands veteran and lives in a Veterans house. He said recently: “I have been there for over 10 years now and love the stability and tranquillity it seems to provide for me, after living on

an emotional roller coaster following Active Service in the Falklands War 30 years ago, this year. My grand-daughter also loves running about in the garden ‘helping’ with my tomatoes and strawberries in the summertime!”

Seafarers uKSeafarers UK helps people in the maritime community, making a real

difference to people’s lives across the Merchant Navy, Fishing Fleets, Royal

Navy and Royal Marines. As an ‘island nation’ we depend on our seafarers

to defend our shores, trade with other countries and import essential fuel

and food. The job of a seafarer is therefore vital, but also demanding and

hazardous. A large number of those serving will be facing problems of very

different kinds; long periods of separation from friends and family, extended

periods of duty, fatigue, and working heavy machinery whilst being exposed

to harsh weather.

Such dangers and difficulties can lead to disability, depression, debt,

relationship breakdown, homelessness or even death. Our funding enables

seafarers to access advice and information, adapt to life on shore, re-train

and find new employment. It also improves their quality of life by helping to

provide the essentials of daily living that a small pension (or none) cannot

cover. Often it may be the family of a seafarer who has been injured, held

hostage or who has subsequently passed-away that require assistance.

Seafarers UK receives no government funding and relies on donations and

fundraising to be able to carry on providing long-term aid. Without this,

there simply wouldn’t be the level of support we are able to provide today

and that last year gave hope and help to over 100,000 seafarers when they

needed it most.

aBF The Soldiers’ CharityThe Soldiers’ Charity began as the Army Benevolent Fund in 1944, to look

after the middle aged veterans of World War One and the young soldiers

of WW2. Today, the conflicts may be different, but the pressures on our

soldiers remain. As we are all too aware from the news, the Army is bearing

the strain of the current conflicts. Hundreds of soldiers have been killed in

Afghanistan and Iraq with many more injured both mentally and physically.

ABF The Soldiers’ Charity is the Army’s national charity – we are for

soldiers, for life. We provide financial assistance to all soldiers and their

families when in need. Even when a soldier leaves the Army they are still

part of our family and eligible for our help. The scope of our work is huge.

Half of our money is given direct to individuals to help in areas such as

debt relief, mobility assistance, education bursaries, carehome fees and

respite breaks. The other half is given as grants to other charities providing

bespoke support to veterans (e.g. residential care).

As an independent charity we receive no government funding. We therefore

rely entirely on donations from the public.

Ken Lukowiak served in the British Army with 2 Parachute Regiment in both Northern Ireland

and the Falkland Islands. After he left the Army, Ken struggled with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder resulting in the breakdown of his relationship and living situation. With nothing in the way of furniture, carpets and kitchenware, we gave Ken a grant to cover the purchase of essential items to help him

get back on his feet. ‘It was The Soldiers’ Charity that stepped in and gave me some help when I needed it the most, I don’t know what I would’ve done without them’.

The raF Benevolent FundThe RAF Benevolent Fund is the RAF’s leading welfare charity. Since our

foundation in 1919, we have been there, through thick and thin, supporting

the RAF family. We are there for all serving and former members of the

RAF as well as their partners and dependent children.

We provide a spectrum of care, supporting everyone from children growing

up on RAF stations, to those serving today to keep our skies safe, to the

veterans who fought for our freedom. We provide a broad range of welfare

initiatives, from childcare centres to housing for those injured in conflict,

and from debt relief counseling to mobility aids, such as wheelchairs.

It could be supporting a Second World War pilot in later life, supporting

the widow and children of an RAF reservist killed in action, or providing

practical help to a young RAF Regiment gunner injured in Afghanistan.

We are an independent charity and we receive no government funding.

We rely entirely on your support to continue our work.

In 2011 RAF Police dog handler Corporal Mick McConnell was on patrol in Afghanistan searching for IED’s when his dog Memphis momentarily left his side and Mick stepped on a mine. Even though the IED only partially exploded, it caused irreversible damage.

Mick’s left foot was shattered in the explosion and back in England he spent a month recovering in hospital with five-inch pins keeping his foot together.

Despite almost two years of rehabilitation, he is still on medication and took the decision to have his foot amputated.

It was during this time he contacted the RAF Benevolent Fund for a loan which has enabled Mick and his wife Lorna, a former Flight Sergeant, to buy a more suitable home in Elgin, close to family.

Mick said: “The fact that the Benevolent Fund has helped us to move from a house where it took me 10 minutes to get up and down the stairs to a home that’s easily accessible and close to family where we can get support, has made a huge difference to our lives. They’ve lifted this unbelievable weight from my shoulders.

“I didn’t know a lot about them until I was injured, but now I realise that they’re not a small cog in the wheel – they’re making a huge difference to people like me.”
