A New Mystery

March 18th

A diffi cult case

This new case is very diffi cult. I really enjoy* solving* mysteries but this time I just don’t know what to do. I can’t ask my best friend Lisa for help or my brother Stephen. Lisa is at her grandmother’s house and Stephen … well, he thinks that the* case is closed, but I don’t!

I’m going to write about everything that has happened and then maybe I’ll understand it all!

Reading

1 Read the summary and fi nd six mistakes.

Sally and her mum went to the Majestic Hotel in the

afternoon. They used the bag of tools that was in the

criminals’ room to open the pipe in the kitchen. They found

the beetle and then Sally and her mum went to the police

station. The British and Egyptian police worked all night to

solve the mystery and the next day, there was a photo of

Sally’s mum in the newspaper. Sally received a postcard from

the National Museum in Cairo and they invited her and a

friend to visit them.

The British Museum

The British Museum in London has a collection of more than seven million objects that represent the history of many different cultures. You can learn about the Aztecs, Ancient Greeks, Ancient Romans and many others as well as the Ancient Egyptians. You can see many valuable objects from Ancient Egyptian civilization, which started in about 3000 BC. The Ancient Egypt gallery contains mummies, coffi ns, poems that were written on papyrus, pottery, tools and wall paintings with writing in hieroglyphics.

The tomb of Nebamun has been recreated at the museum to give visitors a clear idea of what an Ancient Egyptian tomb-chapel looked like. Nebamun was a rich offi cial who died in about 1350 BC and his tomb contained lots of different wall paintings. If you want to see all of these things then you can visit the museum, which is open every day, and take a look around. It’s easy to get to on the underground and admission is free. If you want to book an audio tour though then you have to pay but it is cheaper if you’re under 12. If you go with your family then you can book a family tour (2 adults and 2 children under 12).

As well as the displays in the galleries, the museum also organises special exhibitions about important events or people in history all year round. In 2001 they organised a big exhibition on Cleopatra of Egypt. Cleopatra has become one of the most famous pharaohs in history mainly because she was a woman but also because she was very intelligent. She used her charms to exert power over the Roman Empire fi rstly as Julius Caesar’s girlfriend and then as Mark Antony’s wife. This exhibition is still available on the museum’s website and you can do an online tour which tells you all about the Queen’s rule and shows you photos of the artefacts that were on display. Just go to www.britishmuseum.org and search for Cleopatra of Egypt.

If you’re really interested in this period in history then you can read more about it in some of the books available to buy at the museum bookshop. The bookshop is on the North Side of the Great Court or you can order online. Why not buy some souvenirs too? The Souvenir Shop is on the West side of the Great Court and sells museum guides, postcards, stationary and other inexpensive gifts. Again, you can order all of these things from the website if you prefer. To make sure you always know what’s happening at the museum and what exhibitions they’re planning then you could become a member. Young people aged between 8 and 15 can become a Young Friend whereas people aged 16-26 can receive a reduction on the full membership price.
