Initially the Trelystan History project was no more than a good idea, a vague intention mulled over on a wet dreary afternoon, until a chance meeting with the Vicar, Rev. Robert Leach, while the church was being renovated, provided a new focus and motivation. This was the appropriate time to update the church history leaflet written by Betty Mulroy some years ago, Robert suggested. ’Let‘s do it’ we thought and got cracking. But one train of investigation led to another and another until the whole project covered not just the church but the township of Trelystan as it was from the days of the Saxon Hundreds to the 19C.and beyond.Over at least three years there have been occasional treks to the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, visits to Llandrindod Archives and Shrewsbury Archives, many mornings spent in Powysland Library in Welshpool as well as hours spent searching the sources on the internet. Now at last it is nearly complete. There have been surprises. Trelystan township has a very different history to its neighbour Marton. For centuries Trelystan, Rhos Goch and Leighton were

“We are having a final push to complete the Trelystan history. There has to be an end to research at some point and we must get it into print before I become too doddery and senile. If I could make a final plea to the readers of the Leighton Newsletter for old photos relevant to Trelystan I would be very grateful. It is a scattered and thinly populated township so there are very few people who may have old photos or maps of the area or of functions like the church fete, harvest festivals hence the lack of materials but it’s worth trying again. We had a very interesting chat with Len Bennett from Brockton recently. He lived at Bank House, Trelystan and recalled some wonderful farming memories which I recorded. These are like gold dust and increasingly difficult to find. Thank you, Doreen Bowen”

The Leighton Home Farm Buildings will be open, by appointment, for public viewing on Saturday 30th September and Sunday 1st October as detailed below:The tours will take place 11am and 2pm on both days. Booking is essential. Please phone Steve Burgess on 01547 530 835.There is a maximum of 40 places on each tour. Please note that the site is a working Stud Farm and Health and Safety of people and animals is paramount.

The Landmark Trust will be opening the Poultry House on the same weekend between 10am and 4pm.

known as the Chapelry of Wolstanmind (and variations of this). The name Trelystan occurred infrequently until recently. There was a Holy Well in the township, now long forgotten and a Primitive Methodist church which flourished within living memory. There are several medieval documents describing leases and indentures naming people, farms and fields as well as details from Leighton Vestry book of the great renovation of the church in the 19C.which involved the whole community. We’ve reached the end of the research which inevitably is constrained by our own academic limitations leaving questions unsolved and documents unread, but 40,000 words are in the bag along with maps and memories recounted by well-known local personalities. But if there are any family photos pre 1950 you may wish to include, which are relevant to Trelystan do let us know. The plan is to do a ‘book’ through internet self-publication using the money we still have from the sales of the Marton Book and then sell the Trelystan book at a cost covering price. Current affairs, national and local politics feature in a few places in this issue. The cover story is a case of art

based on history and — and then life following art. The story is actually an account of one of the most famous films ever made but

so revolutionary in every aspect that hardly anyone has seen it as intended since its premiere in 1927. With themes of the overthrow of the established order, removal of monarchies and a movement towards unity of the countries of Europe it’s remarkably prescient about the arguments and debates going on in Brussels today The film was made at the mid-point between the Great War and World War 2 – the time when there were renewed fears about conflicts on the continent. What’s in your attic – apart from that hidden portrait? How many interesting objects are you storing that could do with a new home? Not got an attic – then what about your garage, garden shed, broom cupboard? We have got enough stuff surplus to requirements to fill several issues of the newsletter with classified ads. So don’t all rush at once but, space permitting, we will be offering occasional slots for items you want to sell off. As readers, we are all looking for bargains from owners hoping to save space – it’s how we bought four Ikea chairs from Allan Smith (illustrious previous editor of this newsletter) and a few years later sold a couple of these on to another lucky reader. What’s a fair price for your small advert? What happens if nobody wants to buy your elephant’s foot umbrella stand? If you sell your item the fee is a massive £2. But no charge at all if you don’t make a sale. We are kicking off with the fascinating object opposite that’s bound to be snapped up – maybe…

Hurray! Alannah Holloway finally gets her Green Card to go with her California Trainer’s Licence. Alannah can now stay in the US and keep riding in the sun for as long as she wants. What a relief — for the rest of the family!

Happy Birthday to David Williams who was 50 on September 10th

And to Henry Williams who will be 18 on 12th of October

Pat and Laura Poole would like to thank all those who helped them celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a Black-Tie event at Leighton Village Hall on Sat 2nd September.

In particular our vocalist Libby for singing to us throughout the evening. Rikki Lloyd for all his hard work in preparing food for nearly one hundred people. Also to Craig at The Angel for the loan of table and chairs, Michael the Guitarist who played to everyone on entry to the hall. The Sole Jets for the evening dancing and to Catherine Williams for her artistry in making such a fantastic cake. A very big 'thank you' to Carys Owen for her two vocal renditions, one with ukulele and the other without music, fantastic. Thanks to everyone who contributed in any way, especially Jane Walton for her inventive table numbers.

However the biggest 'thank you' has to go to Chris Walton who worked tirelessly in creating a fantastic arrangements of flowers, whether for the tables or throughout the hall. This was something to behold.

We particularly requested No Presents so thank you to all those who decided to do so anyway. We requested that anyone so inclined might like to make a donation to the Welsh Air Ambulance. Thank you to everyone who donated, we achieved the magnificent total of £1,000. Thank you all once again. WHAT A NIGHT.

Leighton School have recently experienced a lot of dumping of rubbish alongside their bins and more importantly a number of wine bottles dumped there. This not only made it very inconvenient as the school pay a great deal for the rubbish collection and need the capacity. It was also was unsightly for the village in general and of course the car park is used for games and any injury caused by the glass is to be avoided at all costs.

Two weddings in two weeks in September in Leighton Church! So much love and laughter we had to record it with a few pictures as both were very special occasions in their own individual ways. At both weddings beards were popular and both couples had taken such care and attention in planning their celebrations making both so personal and memorable - with both coincidentally having very unusual wedding cakes at their receptions!

TIBBOTT/BRIGHT

Firstly we had the wedding of Eluned Tibbott who married Lloyd Bright and they are seen here leaving the church under the traditional archways of pikels provided by Berriew Young Farmers Club followed by the walking through the customary avalanche of confetti. There is also a photo of the bridesmaids, best man and ushers and there was the surprise arrival of horsepower provided by Sian, Gaynor, Maggie and Kay who came along with their steeds to support them. Eluned is a Land Agent with Powys County Council and Lloyd farms in Berriew where they now live.

WADDINGTON/GRIES

Then we had the wedding on another sunny Saturday of Daniel Gries and Stefanie Waddington who put their own stamp on the wedding ceremony in Leighton Church. We have taken some photos of their day with their horsepower being mechanical rather than equine. Dan and Stef work in the Gries family plumbing business ‘Splash’ which is based here in the village.

MARIS TETERIS

Sometime towards the end of June we noticed that it was quite difficult to see out of our dining room window. It was then that we realised our windows had not been cleaned since October. It turned out that our elderly cleaner had fallen off his ladder and been invalided into retirement.

This was an opportunity to try one the long-term Trade Directory advertisers, Window Wipers. Run by Maris Teteris, the company uses distilled water made by trickling through a resin filter overnight. The van sets out with 350 gallons on board. On site, the water is pumped through very long hoses and very tall wiper poles all parts of large buildings are accessible —even skylights on a roof can be reached.Because there are no impurities in the water, after the windows are ‘wipered’they are left wet anddry with no smears, stay clean longer —that’s the theory and it works!

The EU evolved from a collaboration between European countries in the hope of preventing further wars between them. It has been said the French were afraid of the Germans, the Germans were afraid of themselves but the British were not afraid of anyone so were always lukewarm

about joining in.This is a story of British perseverance and French aspiration. The Napoleon of the title is about a lost silent cinematic masterpiece made in 1927. The film needed special equipment to be shown as intended so had a very limited release at the time. Enthusiasts knew of its existence but no one knew where all the parts were or where any copies could be found.

Fast forward to 1953 and a 15 year old Kevin Brownlow had been collecting old silent films for four years. He was particularly interested in French films of the era and had the luxury of a 9.5mm projector to show them on. But television was quickly becoming the standard for home entertainment so these films turned up cheaply in junk shops around London. Quite by chance he borrowed a film called Napoleon Bonaparte and the French Revolution. Expecting little more than a boring educational film, Kevin

phoned the British Film Institute (BFI) — they read out a review of a 1920s film by the French director Abel Gance. The review was quite dismissive so not expecting much he watched the first reel:He said: 'The first shot faded in to reveal

the leaders of the French Revolution- Marat, Danton, Robespierre. What struck me were the superbly chosen faces. I simply responded to the brilliant casting, and felt the film blaze into life, like a masterly newsreel of the eighteenth century. This was the start of a life-long campaign to search, find and restore the complete film. Kevin Brownlow wrote to and met with the director to find out how the original project had been planned and what missing parts were needed to assemble a complete copy.

Back in 1925 Abel Gance began working on an epic about his hero. This was to be no mere entertainment. The project was a serious patriotic commitment. To his enormous cast and crew he addressed a proclamation saying: ‘We are going to revive the Revolution and the Empire. [You will be] conjuring up the spirit of your ancestors to convey the formidable face of France between 1792 and 1815’ So what was so remarkable about this film? The enormous size of the undertaking involved countless thousands of real extras in the crowd scenes (years before CGI) — a labour of love rather than paid work.Actors, extras and the director stayed dressed in their 18th century costumes through-out the three years it took to make the film Quite a lot of the Napoleon story was romanticised but all of the leading characters were real enough. Gance himself played the villainous revolutionary, Saint-Just, who went to the guillotine with Robespierre. But what captured the interest of archivists were the amazing technical innovations — never been seen before and some never since. Spilt screen techniques, new camera movements, and creative dissolves are all part of film making today. However the astounding finale has never been repeated. Gance created huge panoramas wider than any Cinemascope movie — wider even than Cinerama. And this is one of the reasons the film disappeared from view. The main part of the Napoleon film was shown in the 4:3 shape of cinema screens from the 1920s - 40s the same shape as pre-flat screen TVs. But the panorama finale needed 3 projectors and 3 separate screens side by side.

Abel Gance intended this film to be the first part of a trilogy. The first cut ran for 9 hours but was reduced to only 6 hours for the initial performance at the Paris Opera. It was well received here but the technical requirements made wider distribution impossible.

By 1980 Kevin Brownlow had recreated the film in its original format. So Abel Gance (who died in 1981) lived to see his

Kevin Brownlow2010 honorary Oscar for film preservation

Abel Gance with Kevin

Abel Gance as Saint-Just

8

Standard 4:3 Screen

masterpiece performed with a live orchestra (another huge expense) playing specially commissioned music. This time there was international recognition even though these performances are still rare occasions. Gance realised that he would never be able to complete the trilogy so he finished the film with Napoleon’s triumphant conquest of Italy and his ideals in the caption:

The spectacular panoramas finished the film with the three screens blazing into colour with the blue white and red of the French tricolour. If completed the trilogy would have finished with the defeat at Waterloo even though Wellington said it was a close run thing — a bit like our referendum! In 2016 the BFI released the DVD after 50 years of renovation — but everything has to fit on a single screen…

BEETHOVEN & NAPOLEONBeethoven admired the ideals of the French Revolution, so he dedicated his 3rd Eroica symphony to Napoleon Bonaparte… until Napoleon declared himself emperor. Beethoven then sprung into a rage, ripped the front page from his manuscript and scrubbed out Napoleon’s name. The change of heart may also have been because Beethoven’s patron and pupil was a member of the ruling elite whose countries were under threat from the French. Having changed allegiances, he composed the Wellington’s

Victory piece — the tackiest of all his works — strains of ‘Rule Britannia’ and ‘God Save the King’ interspersed with rifle shots ricocheting across the music to represent the Waterloo battlefield.

A unified Europe under a single administration where citizens can travel and work freely between

countries without restriction…

A number of residents were concerned about Powys Planning Authority’s lack of control of the large farm development at Lower Leighton The applicant's plan, which is numbered, shows quite clearly the order in which the works should proceed. He has not kept to that plan. Russell George AM was consulted and he arranged a meeting which was attended by the following :-Russell George AM, with Gwyneth Bird, Director of Planning, Gwilym Davies,(GD),Gareth Jones, (GJ) Senior Manager for Education, Dale Boyington, (DB) Senior Highways Manager, and Cllr Martin Weale, (MW) Portfolio Holder for Planning to meet Fraser Jones, (FJ) and three representatives of the Community of Leighton on 4th August 2017.The following subjects were discussed:-1. The approved program of works was not as per the applicants plan and that there was no slurry tank installed. GD advised that the applicant has applied for changes to the landscaping aspects however FJ advised that due to issues with the Health and Safety Executive he has had to revise his work schedule. 2. Mention was made that the Village Hall field was wet due to storm water running from bund and that the works carried out had fractured a drain from the school Foul Treatment Works. GJ advised that CCTV has shown that the school/village hall drain is broken and FJ has agreed that he will repair this and all storm water from the Hall land will be piped into the ditch.

3 The lack of a slurry store and the construction of a bund and planting had not been carried out on the site of the slurry tanks as part of Phases 1 & 2 were made. FJ replied that he could not build the bund until he had excavated the ground for the two tanks. It was pointed out that by not constructing the bund around the slurry tank site FJ is in direct contravention of his Planning Conditions. It was agreed that is something that will need to be agreed with Tamsin Law Planning Officer at County Hall and FJ. FJ agreed and assured the meeting that the farm will not operate until the slurry tank is in situ.4. FJ agreed no building work will be done outside the permitted hours – without prior agreement. FJ assured the meeting that he would contact the neighbours via the agreed method prior to any works being carried out. Tamsin Law is now the point of contact for Planning in County Hall.5. Concern was raised about the mud on the road that was not only a breach of the planning approval, it was also an offence under the Highways Act. FJ stated that his vehicles coming on/off the site whilst getting the silage in did make a mess on the road, but he cleaned it. It was pointed out that spoil had been deposited on the road during the transportation of stone from the site, which has now been stopped. DB agreed that the Council will hire out a sweeper to FJ if and when FJ requests it. FJ agreed to this

6. MW recommended that FJ and the villagers talk to each other via a single contact, FJ agreed to the request that report be printed in the Leighton Village News, he was also happy to be contacted by either John Markwick. Ian Corke, or Sarah Jones on behalf of the village to discuss any concerns that are raised.7. The question of the transfer of the strip of land to the Village was discussed. GD advised the meeting that this is not a legal requirement, however FJ assured the meeting that he is ‘a man of his word’ and he will donate the land to the village as he originally agreed at the initial consultation meeting. He would like to see plans of what is proposed for the land. FJ was told that the village is

looking to raised funds to build a tennis court and this would be looked into with David Williams. A plan would be submitted to FJ ASAP.8. GJ raised concerns regarding the broken drain from the school – this will be investigated. FJ agreed that the Education Dept. can discharge their treated effluent into the ditch that now runs past the treatment works. It was raised that there is a potential problem that the outfall from the works is too deep to discharge into the ditch. It was suggested that FJ should dig a new pipe and connect this to the original outfall pipe. Again, this will be up to the Education Dept. and FJ to agree on a satisfactory course of action.

Another success for local democracy thanks to the survey organised by our Montgomery AM, Russell George. Following the crazy decision to close or reduce recycling centres to limited opening, Russell conducted an online poll with 1,000s of responses. There was overwhelming dissatisfaction with all aspects of Powys refuse arrangements. Thankfully from September the recyl-ing centre at Welshpool is now open 5 days a week — Wednesday to Sunday

At the bottom of the bank is a small lake, where the children of the family learned to swim. The garden was created by the late Barbara Joseph. It was planned to look good all year round and Autumn is breath-taking in its beauty. Shrubs and trees turn colour slowly and gently so that the very best hues are evident. Every corner, nook and cranny has its surprises, every season its particular joys. The famous adjoining nursery sells a vast range of plants for the garden, including many rare and specimen species. My hate for him is stern and strong,

I've hated him both loud and long.

Since first I met him in the spring

I've hated him like anything.

There was one Green Fly, I recall,

I hated him the most of all.

He sat upon my finest rose,
