To say Louis Rogé, alias Brodinski, is a rising star in EDM is not only redundant,

but also belittling. Although Brodinski made his first waves in electronic music

as a Parisian teen during the heyday of French House music (circa 2007), the

25-year-old Frenchman is just now maturing into his potential. With forward

thinking and a knack for producing underground techno, Brodinski--like any

good visionary--was ahead of his time, spinning avant-garde techno tracks

that only a handful of club-goers could

really soak in. But in the past year, the

masses began to see and hear his vi-

sion. In 2012, Brodinski moved to LA,

launched his record label Bromance

with fellow techno wizard Gesaffel-

stein, released tracks on his musical

side project G. Vump, branched into

a clothing line with Paris based Unicity

Clothing, and will soon be a radio host

on BBC’s Radio 1 show In New DJs

We Trust starting this April. The year

2013 will see the rise of the young

EDM mogul, starting with Brodinski.

Inspired by hard-hitting, flagrant South-

ern Hip-Hop instrumental, Trapstyle

music took the EDM world by storm,

spawning a new breed of Hip-Hop influenced producers that quickly stole the

spotlight in 2012. At the forefront of the growing Trap movement is 23-year-

old bass specialist Harry Rodrigues, aka Baauer. Though the NYC producer

rose to stardom seemingly overnight in 2012, Baauer has already earned his

keep among the EDM elite with his unwavering production quality and consis-

tency. During 2012, Baauer released a slew of remixes including No Doubt’s

“Settle Down,” Flosstrada-

mus’ trap anthem “Rollup,”

and Nero’s “Won’t You.”

Baauer kicked off 2013 with

a two month U.S. tour with

Hip-Hop icon Just Blaze and

has a bevy of releases set to

release throughout the year.

Stay tuned to Baauer for all

of your Trap needs.

The year 2012 was the biggest year to date for EDM in the Unit-ed States and saw an expansion on the already booming elec-tronic music market, both musically and monetarily. 2012 was

a year that firmly established EDM as a major force to be reckoned within the global music industry and as an area with seemingly limit-less experimentation, innovation, and possibilities. As more and more people continue to seep through the cracks of (now) mainstream Elec-tronic music, enthusiast are beginning to embrace the outer leaves and branches of the flourishing tree that is EDM.

Here are four artists to keep an eye and ear on in 2013....

One of, if not The, most talked about EDM act of 2012 is the U.K. based duo Disclosure. Consisting of

brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence, age 21 and 18 respectively, Disclosure has quickly risen to the top

of the “go to” list for many critics and concert-goers alike through their revival of the seemingly deceased

genres of 90’s House and 2-Step. Combining a refreshing, melodic and bass-heavy interpretation of UK

Garage and House music, Disclosure has resurrected a bi-decade old sound and resurged it through

the underground clubs of Europe and the U.S. In 2012, the duo released the highly acclaimed The Face

EP in addition to their jaw dropping remix of Jessie Ware’s track “Running,” which is considered as one

of the best tracks of 2012. Coming off of their recently released single “Latch”, which reached No. 11 in

the UK Charts, Guy and Howard show no sign of slowing down as they plan to tour around the world

well into 2013.

Electronic Pop Music done right. The musical productions of Aluna Francis and George Reid are, in essence,

UK Pop music. You won’t find any epic drops, screeching synths, or overbearing bass in their lovestruck

catalogue. What you will find, though, is (1) an extremely seductive voice and (2) intricately produced beats

that elevate your heart rate just enough to bob your head and sway your hips. After starting their collabora-

tive effort in George’s bedroom, AlunaGeorge spread like wildfire throughout the UK and internet with their

first big track “You know You Like It.” Sequentially, the duo released a handful of well-received singles like

“Just A Touch” and most recently, “Your Drums, Your Love.” By the end of 2012, AlunaGeorge was ranked

the number one blogged about artist in the UK and came in second place in BBC’s Sound of 2013 Poll.

Their highly anticipated debut album Body Music is set to release in June 2013 and will most likely have an

accompanying live tour. Be sure to save the date if AlunaGeorge comes to a city near you.

Guitar solos stream the air, people are singing at the top of their lungs,

the night is majestic, and it is finally here in the city that never sleeps.

Las Vegas, it’s time to rock! The Venetian Las Vegas is now home to the

popular Broadway musical, ROCK OF AGES.

The show sets back to Los Angeles’ infamous Sunset Strip in the 80’s telling a

story of a young man and a small town girl whose hearts intertwine while they

chase their dreams of making it big. It’s a lighthearted, feel-good comedy that

ignites the room with laughter. The vibrant show attracts several generations

celebrating timeless rock songs that create a fun, energetic party where it be-

comes hard not to want to sing along. Popular songs include “Here I Go Again”,

“Wanted Dead or Alive”, “Don’t Stop Believin’”, and more.

The party doesn’t end here, but continues to rock in THE BOURBON ROOM, a

lounge located near the theater. Audiences of all ages can transform the pres-

ent into an unforgettable night of the 80’s where the music is loud and everyone

is jamming.

Salmon Mojo

Page 10: The Electronic Music Edition

Making its debut to Morongo Casino, Resort and Spa in Cabazon, CA, Tacos & Tequila (T&T),

embodies traditional Mexican cuisine infused with a modern twist of rock n’ roll edge. Offering

delicious lunch and dinner menus options as well as an exciting happy hour and entertaining

nightlife, T&T makes for a great addition to this highly sought-after Southern Californian destination.

The restaurant’s design flows openly into the casino, maintaining the energetic vibe while still providing a

comfortable and pleasant dining experience. Sounds of intermixed rock and dance music lifted my spir-

its as I entered the warm and inviting environment, making for a wonderful start to the evening. Soon after

being greeted by their delightfully personable staff members, I was escorted throughout the luscious red,

gold and earth-toned dining floor, which embraced a somewhat youthful and artistic flair. Colorful mosa-

ics of amber and burgundy intertwined with soft lights and rustic woodwork. All the while graciously sized

televisions lined the surroundings, adding just the right touch of social enjoyment and functional style.

I had the pleasure of sitting in the perfect viewing area of the venue; Taking in the excitement from the ca-

sino floor, the Lakers’ game from the bar and the smiling faces of my neighboring diners. Once settled, I

embarked on the highly difficult decision of which 100% de Agave Tequila drink was going to wash down

the tasty food ahead of me. The Blueberry Smash - Milagro Silver Tequila muddled with blueberries, lime,

mint and the perfect amount of spice from ginger beer – made for the most delicious Tequila beverage

to ever grace my lips. Alongside a plethora of other signature drinks such as the Pineapple Chipotle

Margarita and the Watermelon Cooler, Tacos & Tequila presents an extensive list of Tequilas available in

fun spiral-like flights, perfect for celebrations or spicing up the night.

For starters begin with the cheese lover’s Queso Fundido – a blended mix of melted Oaxaca and Gouda

cheese with chorizo, chile morita salsa and flour tortillas - before moving on to one of their mouth-water-

ing Taco, Enchilada, Burrito or Fajita platters. If you’re having a hard time deciding like I was, shift your

eyes over to their fabulous combo plates served with your choice of three different main course items.

#1 – Served with out-of-this-world-mouth-melting pork carnitas, a sweet chipotle chicken tamale and

creamy cheese enchilada, made for the perfect climax to the ever-so delightful dinner.

newly remodeled patio features a fireplace, outdoor heaters and wonder-

fully soothing fountains that help create a pleasingly private dining experi-

ence. This neighborhood gem boasts a full Italian staff headed by owner

and chef, Sal Maniaci, who has brought his firsthand knowledge of Italian

cuisine to Southern California.

Start with their delightfully light and crisp Calamari Fritti before moving on

to one of their tantalizingly tasty dishes including Farfalle Salmone, Scal-

loppine Gorgonzola or the chef’s signature, Penne Otero. Robust in flavor,

the Penne Otero will ignite taste buds with its bacon-infused, homemade

FRESH MANILLA CLAMSCHA CHA’S LATIN KITCHEN110 W. Birch Street, Brea, CA 92821

714.255.1040 | www.ChaChasLatinKitchen.com | By Justin Olsen

Spearheading the rebirth of Downtown Brea, Cha Cha’s Latin Kitchen

serves up a culinary blend of Mexican and Latin heritage in a fresh modern

style. Born out of love and passion for Latin cuisine, the California-adaptive

menu showcases the restaurant’s maturity, breaking away from its tradition-

ally advertised, “Tacos & Tequila.” Mouthwatering dishes and homemade

fire-roasted salsas are prepared to perfection with all-natural meats and

seasonal produce in the open kitchen, delivering a uniquely fresh quality

to every bite.

A variety of popular and boutique wineries from the Central Coast, Spain

and South America add a great complement to any meal, especially their

Fresh Manilla Clams. Sautéed in a savory broth of garlic, herbs, white wine

and butter, then finished with spicy chorizo sausage, these clams are a

must-have.

AMERICANOHAVEN GASTROPUBLocations in Orange & Pasadena

A hip new approach on classic offerings

seems to be a trend that Haven Gastro-

pub has grown accustomed to following.

With locations in both historic Old Towne

Orange and Old Pasadena, Haven is re-

igniting the Gastropub concept, a British

term blending gastronomy and pub-like

style. Combining old-world European fare

with a modern American twist, the dimly

lit establishment features an intimate yet

welcoming ambiance, home to phenom-

enal comfort food and traditional reborn

cocktails.

Boasting an expansive selection of beers

on draught, bottled craft beers and more

than 50 specialty single-malt whiskeys,

scotches and bourbons, the decisions on

libations are almost endless. In addition,

Haven Gastropub serves nearly 50 wines

by the glass, leaving nearly every dish

on the menu with a perfect beer or wine

pairing. Creating cocktails with a focus

on quality ingredients and craftsmanship

rather than trendy infusions, the drinks

here shine in the spotlight. Campari, Car-

pano Antica vermouth and soda water

come together to create the Americano,

embodying the pub’s classic renditions.

Monello, a well-suited Italian term that trans-

lates to “naughty little boy,” is a passionate

project that celebrates the extraordinary life-

style of Milan, constructed with a tidbit of re-

bellion. Located in downtown San Diego, the

restaurant indulges Little Italy with glamorous

street-inspired food and traditional aperitivo

culture. The Milanese eatery is adorned with

medieval decor and timeless design that

blends old world vibes with modern day

fashion chic.

Bringing along an engaging community-like

aspect, Monello provides an aperitivo dining

experience that, until recently, has been for-

eign to U.S. soil. Meant to open the palate

and give guests a chance to socialize and

mingle, expertly crafted cocktails are paired

with complimentary “tastes from the cook,”

delivering a unique alternative to the repeti-

tive happy hour offerings found elsewhere.

At the heart of the house is the handcrafted

Kristy Rumsey is quite the “Social” worker. As the

VIP Manager at San Diego’s trendy lounge Side

Bar, she prides herself on exceptional service

and raising the bar for San Diego nightlife. Kristy

loves creating a unique family vibe and spends

additional time with the VIPs by getting to know

each client on a personal basis. When she isn’t

prepping for the night or catering to VIPs, Kristy

likes to walk around the city --headphones in-- or

to spend time catching up with friends.

NiteGuide Magazine: How did you get into the

Nightlife Industry?

Kristy Rumsey: I started as a VIP cocktail wait-

ress as a second job. Once I got a taste of work-

ing in nightlife I was hooked. Also, I figure it’s a

loose application of my degree in Social Work.

NGM: What sets Side Bar apart from other clubs

and lounges?

KR: The crowd that fills it every night really sets

us apart. The bar itself is pretty special; it caters

to a wide audience and has everything you

could ask for. Side Bar has good music, great

bartenders, amazing dancers, and was just

named San Diego’s Favorite Lounge for 2012!

NGM: Describe a typical night as a VIP host at

Side Bar.

KR: By 5pm I’m attached to my cell phone field-

ing inquiries and reaching out to VIP clients. I hold

a brief meeting with the bottle service team and

spend the beginning of the night greeting guests

and escorting them to their tables. After all the

tables are seated I join the party and make sure

all VIPs are enjoying their experience.

NGM: What’s the most outrageous thing you’ve

seen happen at Side Bar?

KR: On major holidays (Halloween, Memorial

Day, New Year’s, etc) we throw a 6am/10am par-

ty, on New Year’s day we had a line around the

corner at 4:45am. Now that’s dedication.

NGM: Do you have any VIP pet peeves?

KR: A lot of people THINK they are VIPs and like

to let me know, but at the end of the day if you’re

really a VIP, I already know!

NGM: What’s the worst pickup line you’ve ever

heard?

KR: “I may not be the best looking guy here, but

I’m the only one talking to you.” OUCH!!

NGM:How does a guy get your undivided atten-

tion?

KR: I am a sucker for a well-dressed man. Too

many guys show up to the club looking like they

got dressed in the dark.

Maria V. Hernandez lives a very busy, and almost

dual, life. The San Francisco native fills her week-

days working as a full-time surgical technologist

in her current home base of Orange County.

Weekends, however, find the SoCal transplant

bartending at OC’s hottest nightclub, The Yost

Theater. NiteGuide managed to catch up with

this busy beauty to catch a glimpse into her

glamorous nightlife.

NiteGuide Magazine: What do you like to do

in your spare time?

Maria Hernandez: As much as I love OC it is

really nice to get out the OC bubble and travel a

little. I try to make it a point to travel out of OC

and Cali at least every other month. I want to be

able to say that I have visited every continent.

NGM: The Yost is one of Orange County’s most

popular venues. Do you get a lot of positive

feedback from customers?

MH: Yost is taking over OC, bringing you not

only the biggest DJ’s in the world, but the ex-

perience is also visually entertaining. From the

amazing lighting to the acrobats and go-go

dancers. It doesn’t feel like OC but our custom-

ers tell us how much they love getting away at

Yost right in their back yards.

NGM: What do you think makes the Yost so at-

tractive to nightlife lovers?

MH: The worlds renowned DJ’s right in your

back yard surrounded by beautiful people and

a beautiful staff. It’s an attractive place to play!

NGM: Who’s been your favorite DJ to play there

to date?

MH: Hardwell hands down.

NGM: Is there a drink request that immediately

warrants disdain and loathing from the

bartender?

MH: It’s not so much a drink I dislike coming

across serving, it’s more of the indecisive person

that takes 5 min to order a beer. It’s astonishing

how many times people will draw a blank once

they arrive at the bar, only to order another bud

light at the end of the 5 min thinking sessions.

NGM: Is there a drink you love to serve?

MH: Patron Shots, the reason being is because

of the person(s) ordering the shot usually will

take the shot right at the bar and there’s nothing

Winner of the “Fresh Meat -Battle of the DJ’s” competition hosted by Nytehype En-tertainment and sponsored by NiteGuide Magazine, Power Tools Mix Show, and Groove Radio. Johnny Lam AKA DJ DFiB locked in his spot for the March Feature DJ.

A competitive bowler in his spare time, DJ DFiB has lots of talents up his sleeve. Being introduced to music in 1995, he is making his way up producing and mixing music as his passion.

NiteGuide Magazine: How would you de-scribe your sound?Johnny Lam: Heavy influenced with that hip hop flavor and style plus some of that elec-tronic syle of precise programming, steady equilizations, and a who know’s what the f*** will happen next type of steez.

NGM: How did you become involved with the “Fresh Meat –Battle of the DJs” competition? Did you have a feeling you’d come out on top?TJ: Saw the event posted up on Vincent Do’s facebook page and submitted an entry packet.(As far as winning) Not at all. l had no idea who my opponents were so I just had to anticipate that they were probably gonna blow me away and prepare a set that would either blow them away or get me to the final round at least. That was my approach when I won the 2012 DUB-KING and Adams Motorsports Park DJ com-petitions as well.

NGM: Do you prefer digital, vinyl, or a mix of the two?JL: Definitely a mix of the two. I prefer vinyl when it comes to turntablism. There’s nothing that sounds better than that analog sound and

feel. For mixing I have been using digital con-trolled by vinyl (serato). I also get down on cdjs and controllers if need be. I stay ready for any setup that may present itself.

NGM: How does EDM work itself into your daily life?JL: It’s a part of everything I do and who I sur-round myself with. I have friends from all walks of life that listen to all sorts of different genres. My choices in friends relates to my choices in genres of music. I like ’em all different. I enjoy the different styles and flavors. Just like I enjoy mixing and cutting to dubstep, drum & bass, breaks, house, trap and hip hop. Being able to fluctuate and adapt to any genre of music allows me to get along with almost any type of respectful person.

NGM: If you could play any venue in America, what would it be?JL: Not sure if this counts as a venue but it would be pretty sweet to get down on a gig at The Coachella Music Festival main stage.

PR Director at the Narrative Group, Jamie

Krauss, is a natural. Growing up just outside

NYC, she has been planning parties since the

8th grade. Dealing with a diverse client base,

quite often internationally, NiteGuide got to get

the inside scoop on just how Jamie is living her

dream and helping to pursue others.

NiteGuide Magazine: Tell us about your work

with DJs?

Jamie Krauss: I am so fortunate to work with

so many amazing people at various stages

of their careers. DJs are my favorite people

to work with, because I get so personally in-

vested. I really “want it” for them. I work with

legendary DJ/producer, Tracy Young, who is

not only a club superstar, but was Madonna’s

DJ-of-choice for her wedding to Guy Ritchie.

Being on “Team TY” (as we all call it) is always

exciting, especially around her yearly “Genesis”

party at Mansion in Miami Beach, which has

drawn thousands of people to the dance floor

on New Year’s day for ten years now.

NGM: Considering EDM is prominently male-

driven, do you enjoy representing females in

the industry?

JK: The EDM scene is definitely a boys club,

BUT that also means that when a girl “breaks

through” she gets that much more respect.

Look at someone like Audrey Napolean - that

girl is unstoppable right now, and SUPER tal-

ented. I think it’s a delicate balance for EDM

chicks – you need to have a “persona” and a

thick skin, but you can’t be a bitch, because

then no one will want to work with you. A man

would never even have to think about that.

NGM: Are there any unexpected perks that

come along with your line of work?

JK: Sure! I go to every club in the world, and

every festival from the Winter Music Confer-

ence to Electric Daisy Carnival to Tomorrow-

land. I have met just about every DJ you could

imagine, and received a behind-the-scenes

glimpse of every part of the music making pro-

cess.

NGM: Where’s the most interesting place

your line of work has taken you?

JK: Wow, that’s a tough one! Probably my fa-

vorite event each year is the Winter Music Con-

ference, because to me, there is just something

magical about South Beach. I can’t put my fin-

ger on it, but it is like that city bleeds dance

music, and I love every minute of it.

Monte Carlo, Monaco

The French Riviera attracts some of the wealthiest people in the world, and the tiny peninsular country of Monaco offers glitzy clubs and bars as well as a host of nighttime entertainment. Palatial world-renowned casinos epitomize the glamour and lifestyle of Monte Carlo, where

“upscale” is an understatement. While the nightlife is diverse, one constant rule of thumb is to dress up, not down. While much of Monte Carlo caters to an elite wealthy crowd, the city is also welcom-ing to those simply looking to have a good time in style. High-brow travelers can visit The Monte Carlo Opera for authentic world-class performances or Cinema Le Sporting for the latest French films. High rollers can step out into Casino Square to admire the best of Monaco’s architecture.

Casino de Monte Carlo

Overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Casino de Monte Carlo, with its Bohemian glass chandeliers, rococo ceilings, and opera house feel is one of the most

elegant casinos in the world. You will instantly feel like you’re in a James Bond movie. You’ll need a jacket and passport to be admitted into the gaming

rooms. The gold-and-marble atrium outside of the opera house is an exquisite sight, characteristic of the glitz and glamour of the French Riviera.

Jimmy’zThe premier club of Monaco draws world-class DJs and offers breathtaking views of Monte Carlo. It has been the epicenter of all Monte Carlo nightlife for

over thirty years. The dance floor is always packed and energy is always abundant. Jimmy’z has major events going on throughout the year, but it reaches

its full potential in the warm summer nights, when many club-goers hang out in the garden. The club regularly hosts theme nights and the dress code is

among the most upscale on the scene. Leave the jeans and t-shirts in your suitcase, and don’t forget to put on your dancing shoes.

KarémentA starting point for budding Monaco nightlife aficionados, Karément is popular among a younger, trendy crowd compared to the seasoned partiers that

frequent Jimmy’z. House and R&B dominate the playlists each night and the venue is energized by a video-projected backdrop. Antiques are livened with

coats of silver and neon paint. Themed evenings are also popular here, with nights including “Fashion Night” and “Grease Night.” Tables are especially

scarce in the summer, so book ahead.

Buddha-Bar

In the heart of the city, Buddha-Bar is one of the world’s hippest chain restaurants. Housed in a former concert hall and adorned with a red and gold motif,

Buddha-Bar, as its name suggests, conveys a theme inspired by Eastern culture. The influence is also present in the menu’s offerings, which is mainly com-

prised of innovative and appetizing Asian fusion dishes. Lounge and world music with a touch of electro and tribal flavorings set the ambiance of Buddha-

Bar. Open every day but Monday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., Buddha Bar is one of the best settings in Monte Carlo to enjoy good food, music and company.

Black LegendA popular weekend spot for 20-somethings, Black Legend is a hip and contemporary nightclub headlined by resident DJ Zen-K. Live performers frequent

the stage at this Monaco hotspot, making it one of Monaco’s premier live music venues. Musically, the emphasis is usually on R&B, soul and rock. Open

from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., Black Legend offers a heavy dose of glamour. The best of the best-looking occupy booths past midnight, but if you’re game for a

good meal, come for lunch or dinner, and enjoy pasta, salmon, caviar, or other exquisite Mediterranean dishes on the menu.

What do you get when the rhythmic sound of blues

mingles with hard-hitting rock ’n’ roll, and smooth soul-

ful vocals? The answer emerges from a couple of fresh

dudes out of New York City called the London Souls.

Tash Neal, guitar and vocals, along with Chris St. Hi-

laire, drums and vocals, formed the band in 2008. With

roots deeply seeded in sounds from Led Zeppelin and

the Beatles, 60’s free flowing vibes run rampant in just

about every one of the Souls songs.

A mere six months after a nearly fatal car accident that

put front man Neal in a medically-induced coma, the

band is back on stage and in the midst of a tour pro-

moting their upcoming album. On January 19th, these

soulful gents played the Constellation Room to a crowd

that was more than happy to get down and vibe with

their music. Energy was high from the moment that

these guys hit the stage, performing their single “Steady

Are You Ready.” By the end of their set, even a few

security guards couldn’t help but groove to the music!

The group’s sophomore album Here Come The Girls is

set to release in early to mid-2013. Stay tuned at Face-

date, as well as tour info.

Director Lena Dunham put a lot of thought into how she want-

ed to display her scenes with music to captivate the moment.

“Dancing on My Own,” by Robyn, brings us back to the cel-

ebration Hannah has her “All Adventurous Women Do” moment.

From high energy tracks to Michael Penn’s purposely written

ballad for season one’s finale, this album is entertaining with an

endless and ample assortment of beautiful music.

The soundtrack also creates an opportunity to listen to new and

innovative artists. Morgan Kibby, from M83, has a solo project

in the mix. White Sea, and their song “Overdrawn,” is also a

prominent example of fresh new music. Harper Simon, Lia Ices,

Oh Land, and The Vaccines are additional artists with tracks that

emerge as hidden gems.

This album has a song for every mood and is a soundtrack you

cord label Fueled by Ramen is to thank for this compilation, fash-

Nico Vega has officially graduated to the major leagues. Their claim to fame will be their opening acts through a 24 major city North American tour

beginning on February 8th, 2013. Find a show near you: www.nicovega.com/shows

Check out their video “We Are The Art” on their YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/user/nicovega.

On February 5th 2013, Nico Vega released their much

awaited Fury Oh Fury EP. Combining the facets of a White

Stripes vibe with their own musical ingenious, Nico Vega

has already been an overnight success with the hit of their song

“Beast”. Screaming out to the American people, “Beast” conveys

sense of American pride with guitar riffs straight out of Black Sab-

bath’s playbook. The video game BioShock Infinite chose “Beast”

for the trailer and after two million plus views, Nico Vega has had an

unbelievable 4,000% increase in sales, thus drawing the attention

of Tom Cruise’s new movie Jack Reacher. Further down the playl-

ist, the song “Easier” simply makes you feel calm enough to have

an interval before the loud, sensuous, eighties vibe of “Lighting”.

Many of the solid listeners of XM36 have heard the catchy tone of

“We are the Art”. It encounters what it means to stick to your guns

and keep fighting for the rawness of art. Final song to the debut

EP, “Lead to Light” sounds exactly like a Blondie song with an extra

edgy connotation.

The entire EP takes you through a whirlwind of sounds, vibes,

tones, with not one song sounding alike. Song by song you expect

something, but every time you are always joyously wrong when

you press play.

A trio to be reckoned with has emerged onto the stage of LA pop music. Sister act Haim, comprised of Este, Danielle and Alana (Baby) Haim made

some serious waves last summer after debuting their Forever EP, and are continue to tsunami across the country as we head into the 2013 festival

season.

We got to chat with the eldest sister, Este, a quirky spitfire San Fernando Valley native who told us where their love of music started, how recent touring

success have been, and what the inspiration to there emotional jams.

These Jewish jammers formed a band with mum and dad in the early 90’s, known as Rockinhiam. “Our dad put us on the drums as soon as we could

hold our heads up. We would play together on the weekends for fun. We would play charity gigs in the community. It was a lot of fun.”

Growing up as “The Partridge Family of the Millennium”, as mother Donna Haim would say, really set the stage for a rockin’ musical career.

In the past year Haim has toured with A-list band Mumford and Sons and opened for top artists like Florence and the Machine. They continually draw in

heaps of new fans with their powerful percussions and smooth sexy vocals, like a fresh Fleetwood Mac with an R&B soul.

“This year has been CRAZY for us! We’ve been having the best time! I think things kind of changed for us after we played SXSW. It was the most fun I

think we’ve ever had as a band.”

Awards of all kinds have also been flying the girl’s way recently, some of which include the BBC Sound of 2013 award and Baby Haim (Alana) won the first

ever NME Best Twitter award, while the band was nominated for NME ‘Best Track’, ‘Best New Band’ and ‘Best Music Video’.

“It’s fu*king crazy! She does have the best twitter. It’s all her nail art and pictures of puppies. Alana promises

to make a video of her singing ignition remix.”

No doubt these girls are doing big thing and catching the eyes of millions, leaving them in anticipation for their

first album due in mid 2013. Bonnaroo is only one of the many festivals on the horizon for this stylish sister

group, including extensive touring oversees until early June when they hit the states for The Governors Ball

Music Festival in New York.

From her first attraction to the electronic music scene

in the early 90’s, Miss Kittin has become one of the

most inspiring and innovative DJs out there. Here,

the French native took a break from touring the world to

share with us some thoughts on her career and how she

became a leading lady.

NiteGuide Magazine: You’re no doubt one of the original

female electro DJs, how does that feel?

Miss Kittin: I’m totally honored, who wouldn’t be? I just

started to realize what I achieved and enjoy it. I never

looked back (…) I was always involved in the next proj-

ect, non-stop. Now preparing my first solo live show, I went

through all my discography and it’s weird to listen to my

whole history in music. All the memories come back, and

I’m like whoa, I really did this?!

NGM: Shortly after meeting Felix Da Housecat you two

composed “Sliver Screen Shower Scene,” which was a hit.

What was the connection with Felix and how was working

with him?

MK: I met Felix at a Swiss festival. He ignored me com-

pletely until my friend [Dave The Hustler] told him “this is

Miss Kittin, she’s a DJ too.” Felix went nuts, “THE Miss

Kittin?” He wanted to cancel his flight to Ibiza the next

day so we could go in the studio. I didn’t realize at the time

what was going on, I was just having fun in the studio with

2 boys.

NGM: What is it like to be an influential female in an industry

of mostly men?

MK: I never wanted to face the feminist side until lately; I

wanted to be like the boys. We doubt all the time, especially

as women. Now I don’t care. I do my thing, and I’m happy

to be around so many cool girls like Magda, Heidi, or Tini.

We went through the same thing.

NGM: You’ve been doing extensive world touring; what

have been your most memorable or favorite shows/venues

to play at?

MK: It’s hard to say, really. South America was truly amaz-

ing. Playing with Tobi Neumann in Ibiza (outdoor) was the

best back-to-back set I ever had.

NGM: “Calling from the Stars” is your next solo album, set

to release on April 22, 2013. What were your influences

on that?

MK: What you learn on the road… the changes of life, los-

ing someone I loved to death, the beauty of simple things,

the truth (…) I also wanted to go back to electronica, a

musical style always important to me and too much forgot-

ten. My dad often said, “When something’s wrong, look at

the stars. You feel so small, and everything goes back in its

right place.” That’s why I called it that.

NiteGuide Magazine: Rumor has it that your

whole EDM journey began at Avalon?

Audrey Napoleon: Well it’s definitely no rumor,

it’s a fact. I was living in Hollywood working as a

server at Geisha House and a girlfriend of mine

took me over to “the hot spot” Avalon as my friend

would call it. I went in one night with her and be-

came immediately infatuated with the entire scene.

NGM: What enticed you? Was it the music, the

people, all the above?

AN: It was everything... The lights, the people, the

colors, the costumes... The driving bass lines and

the grittiness of the sounds. I felt like I was at a

modern day Studio 54. I mean, I have always been

aware of electronic music. I grew up on it. My dad

has really impeccable taste in music so when I was

younger, I was listening to things like Bowie, De-

peche Mode and Kraftwerk... But, this night was

something different. It was a perfect pot of potion.

NGM: Do you feel Avalon has played a crucial role

in your career?

AN: Avalon was the starting point in my career.

They believed in me. I started out playing in their

side lounge before moving to the main stage. It

definitely played a major role into what I became

today. They lined me up with people I’ve always

dreamed of being on a bill with and they are al-

ways understanding when I need to go on tour

and when I was off tour and back in LA, I had a

home at Avalon to go back to.

NGM: You did Identity Festival last summer. Do

you feel that tour also played a role in where you

are at right now?

AN: Oh absolutely and I appreciate Identity Fest

so much in many ways but particularly in the way

that it challenged me, which helped me grow a lot

as an artist and a person.

Although Markus Schulz is about to embark on his SCREAM

bus tour of the U.S. and commemorating the success of

his weekly radio show (Global DJ Broadcast), the German

trance DJ took a break to chat with NiteGuide Magazine about his

recent award and what exactly he thinks is his key to success.

While most of us would gloat for a decade about the prestigious hon-

or of Being crowned America’s Best DJ by the readers of DJ Times

Magazine, Markus remains shocked, thankful, and more dedicated

than ever to work hard for his fans. His primary need upon waking

matches many of our own: find a good cup of joe and get to work on

time! The only difference? His office is the nightclub floor swimming

with a sea of souls entranced by his original sounds; and his idea of

getting to work on time is catching a daily flight to one of the many

nighttime hotspots, where he is in high demand, around the globe.

Winning accolades doesn’t sway Markus to rest on his laurels, but

instead drives Markus to bring the action harder night after night, city

after city, as he strives to stay atop the ever-changing scene.

When NiteGuide Magazine asked about the upcoming Winter Music

Conference in his hometown, he says he welcomes the different vibe

and buzz in Miami during the conference, saying “it’s really cool to

have something like WMC on your doorstep.” The conference lasts

for a week every March and is a special treat for Markus, as it gives

him a nice week-long respite from traveling.

Markus’ success is not due to the America’s Best DJ award either,

as his last Album “Scream” went #1 on iTunes in 24 hours. Markus

contributes his success to “my team, the label, and myself” and their

ability and efforts to get the word out about the album. He knows,

of course, that this would not be possible without all his “loyal, dedi-

cated fans out there.” Generally Markus gauges the success of his

album based on how the tour goes and how fans perceive the mu-

sic on the dance floor; connecting with the fans and “what you see

night in and night out on tour” allows an artist to feed off the energy

and know exactly what the fans are feeling. He is implementing the

concept of “capturing that live spirit of the night”, by including the

sounds of live crowds from his tour, one that spans eleven countries,

on his compilation album “World Tour-Best of 2012”. On this album

Markus manages to put his jigsaw puzzle together and compile what

he feels represents an “all around the world club feel,” whether its

“people going nuts in Ibiza” or the “Miami crowd flavor.” Essentially,

he understands as long as he continues to deliver memorable perfor-

mances nightly in global hot spots, the album sales will be there and

his artistry will continue to flourish.

Ultra 11

Ultra Music Festival (UMF) is one of the world’s largest and foremost music festivals. With its flagship event taking place in Miami, Florida, Ultra

was originally created in 1999 as a purely electronic music festival. In recent years, however, it has transcended into a festival powerhouse that

spans across four continents and garners the world’s premier musical talents. Ultra has won “Best Music Event” by the International Dance Music

Awards for six consecutive years, from 2005 to 2011, and aims to expand its reach even further in years to come.

Previously, UMF coincided with Miami’s Winter Music Conference as the closing festival, bringing the week long electronic music industry summit to a

spectacular close. Since 2011, however, UMF has worked with Miami Music Week. Ultra celebrates its 15th anniversary with an expansion — the flagship

Miami festival will take place over two weekends, in response to ever-increasing demands to attend the normally sold-out festival. Slated for March 15,

16, and 17 and March 22, 23, and 24, the festival now wedges Miami Music Week in the middle of the two Ultra weekends, creating a ten day experience

that won’t soon be forgotten.

Ultra Music Festival is best known for its extensive lineup of DJs, and this year is no exception. Both weekends boast seven stages with over two hundred

individual acts, including heavyweights such as Swedish House Mafia, Tiesto, and Deadmau5; and budding underground party starters like Disclosure,

Araabmuzik, and Claude Von Stroke.

In keeping with the growing thirst for underground club music, Ultra 2013 introduces a new stage to the festival dedicated to a deeper, more experimental

sound. The stage (appropriately named Surface) will showcase the biggest names in the underground club scene including Lee Foss, Art Department,

Maceo Plex, Danny Daze, and Wolf & Lamb. Judging by the Surface lineup, the stage plans to cater to the growing number of underground Deep House

fans who are beginning to usher in the exploding genre as the go-to dance music scene.

Although Ultra prides itself on acquiring the best and brightest artists within the electronic dance music genre, the world renowned festival has included

more and more artists outside of just DJ acts in recent years. In 2012, even Madonna made a surprise appearance during Avicii’s set! This year the lineup

includes mainstream acts such as The Weeknd, Snoop Dogg, Sleigh Bells and Azealia Banks. This more musically diverse lineup aims to provide a me-

dium between mainstream festivals like Coachella and heavily electronic festivals like Electric Daisy Carnival. In a recent interview with Huffington Post,

Ultra’s executive producer Adam Russakoff stated, “I think it’s very important to nurture the up-and-coming talent. Ultra is a festival unlike any other. It’s

not as mainstream as Coachella, and it’s not as underground as some of the electronic-only festivals. We have a very unique slant with the program that

we push out.”

Although dance music enthusiasts around the world are clearly the biggest beneficiaries of the Ultra Music Festival, the city of Miami is benefiting enor-

mously from the event as well. Ultra’s proposal to expand to two consecutive weekends was welcomed by Miami-Dade County with open arms. A recent

study on the economic impact of UMF showed that festival goers poured over $40 million directly into the economy with indirect spending totaling over

$79 million, in addition to the $11.5 million Ultra spent on operational costs.

Regardless of whether you live in Miami or are just visiting; whether you love electronic music or are just there for the weather — one thing is certain:

UMF is a win-win situation for everyone. The over arching musical mayhem that is Miami Music Week is undoubtedly one of world’s most entertaining

party meccas to date. If you can’t make it out the UMF, NiteGuide will be in attendance providing full coverage. And, of course, there’s always next year.

Music Festival EditionAs soon as the hands on your clock turn back for Daylight Savings, an adventure approaches on the horizon: mu-

sic festival season! One of the many great things about music in the past decade or so has been the availability of

new and exciting ways to celebrate all sorts of music. It seems like music fests are multiplying faster than you can

say, “TAKE ME THERE!” With venues all over the country, ranging from spring to fall (sometimes beyond!), it can

be tough to figure out how to prepare yourself for the madness. Websites and apps are readily available for fans to

figure out where to park, party, and pick up some food. But who out there is helping fans figure out what to wear?

NiteGuide is here for you, Festival Fans.

The first and most important thing to consider when packing up your clothes for a weekend-long affair is where

you’re headed. Are you heading out to party hard in the desert at Coachella? Are you getting ready to get wild at

Outside Lands in San Francisco? Put those high school geography classes to work: North means colder weather,

desert means hotter weather. Gear up accordingly.

The next thing to ask is what type of festival is it? A growing number of fests are primarily EDM, while others are

a combination of EDM and different types of Rock. The great thing about the variability is that it gives you lots of

options to play with. Anything with EDM means that you showing up in something that you might have worn when

you were 8 years old is probably going to be a complete home run. Think: bright colors, metallic, cartoon-ish gear,

etc. If you have something with a furry animal on it (backpack, Spirit Hood, best friend) …you’ve pretty much

struck gold. Fanny packs are an awesome alternative to a big heavy backpack, especially since maneuvering in a

port-a-potty isn’t going to be the most graceful dance you do that day. At any warmer outdoor fest- the Boho look

(think flowing dresses and floppy hats) works great. Sunglasses: don’t leave home without them. Feel free to wear

whatever shoes you feel comfortable in, but boots or other closed-toe shoes are recommended. Most festivals are

in fields with dirt and grass, which leads to some pretty grimy toes if you wear sandals. Definitely bring a jacket. It

seems annoying to tote it around all day, but you’ll thank us when that sun dips and you’re not dancing so much

as just shaking to stay warm.

The most important part of the festival season is to have fun. Stay safe, meet new people, and come home with

memories to tide you over until the next big Fest!

With the growing number of foodies and food-bloggers out

there (rumor is that some eateries are banning photography

of their food and menus!), restaurants really have to pull out

all the stops in order to be at the top of their game. There are the places

where all foods are only cooked at a particular low-degree of heat to pre-

serve nutrients, and even some restaurants where you eat in the dark to

emphasize taste over one’s visual perception. To stand out, you’ve really

got to STAND OUT. Or perhaps… recline? Enter: Supperclub at the his-

toric Hollywood Vogue Theater.

The LA hotspot is now home to Amsterdam’s very own Supperclub, show-

casing the culinary wonderworks of Executive Chef Guus Wickenhagen,

who isn’t the only specialty of the house! Supperclub entwines relaxation

with entertainment in a unique way with its seating arrangements; two

rows of continual lounge seats squaring the outer edges of the room and

surrounding a large dance/showcase floor. Think: all-white, Vegas cabana-

style lounge chairs, side-by-side and complete with plush throw pillows

and side tables for each guest.

The epicenter of Supperclub is a large dance floor and entertainment are-

na. Visually stunning entertainment groups- such as Zen Arts- perform for

guests of the restaurant, thrilling the crowd with various displays of danc-

ers, aerialists, and acrobats. A DJ booth heads the entertainment area,

encouraging guests to get down on the dance floor when music is the

main event of the night. This place really does have it all!

A typical evening at the Supperclub begins with the “first act” of the night,

Chef Wickenhagen and his tantalizing menu. Guests meet at 7:45 pm in

the Bar Noir for their complimentary welcome shots, followed by an open

and elevated kitchen showcase presentation in the under-ground kitch-

en area. After spending some time getting acquainted in Le Bar Rouge,

guests are escorted into the main dining and entertainment room. Once

settled, a rising screen reveals the culinary team prepping the fixed menu

in multiple courses, which go out in wave to the crowd. Each menu is dif-

ferent, ranging from Braised Beef Short Ribs with Chanterelle Mushrooms,

English Peas, Oven-Dried Tomatoes, and Red Wine Sauce- to Risotto of

Yellow Beets with Lobster, Parmesan Cheese and Celery Crunch. It truly is

an all-encompassing experience, promising to be enjoyed by all!

Supperclub Los Angeles is located at 6675 Hollywood Blvd.

Reservations can be made either online at

www.supperclub.la or by calling (323) 466-1900.

With the ever growing importance of eye-popping lighting at electronic

clubs and events, the competition to create the most spectacular setting

is getting incredibly stiff. Clubs and artists alike are continually trying to

outdo their peers with visual stimulus. Show-goers and club enthusiasts

have, by now, become accustomed to the swooning lasers and strobing

L.E.D. walls that are synonymous with electronic music. At this point, the

honeycomb of lights are nothing to gossip about. That being said, the

longtime dance music legend Joachim Garraud gave the crowd at Hard

Rock’s Wintervention something to talk about.

Garraud has made a name for himself in recent years by combining elec-

tronic music and stunning visuals. In his 2013 Invasion 3D tour, Garraud

took his show to the next level by adding a 3D aspect. The Frenchman

fused the video and audio aspects of his show together to create an

experience that is just as much much visual as it is audio. The result

was a Space-themed night that had party-goers dancing with their feet

AND eyes.

The crowd at Hard Rock’s Wintervention was teeming with energy in

anticipation for their first ever full 3D experience. Everyone was treated

with a Space Invader 3D mask to view the show, which made for a

sea of dancing space creatures jumping up and down as Garraud spun

tracks and rocked out on his keytar. By the end of the show, Garraud left

the ecstatic crowd breathing heavy and starry-eyed.

The weekend of February 7th, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Ve-

gas, Nevada was one of it’s busiest for music and DJs! Located just off

the strip, Hard Rock is well known for having some of the best events,

nightlife and afterhours at the well known, trend setting Body English

Afterhours Nightclub

Body English was open last week for its first ever BASSment Thursdays

with drum, bass, electro and house producer Kill the Noise. The artist

played a mix of many genres to a pumped up crowd including bass

heavy metal, techno and more.

Body English also had the sound blasting on Saturday night with house

and techno music pioneer 2000 and One and popular artist DJ Stellar.

The two played high-energy sets to an excited crowd as they partied the

night away during Afterhours.

On Sunday night, the hip hop duo Evitan consisting of Dres of Black-

sheep and Jarobi of A Tribe Called Quest came together to give a per-

formance for Body English’s Industry Night crowd.

With summer around the corner, stayed tuned with NiteGuide to find

out about all the upcoming DJ’s set to play at the world famous Rehab

Pool Party opening April 21st. To find out more info about the Hard Rock

Hotel & Casino log onto www.hardrockhotel.com.

Italian electro sensation Rocco Rampino, more famously known as Con-

gorock, brought Hollywood clubbers and EDM junkies flocking to Control

at the Avalon on January 18, dancing to his bombastic beats and eu-

phoric bass drops. Entrance into the club that night was in high demand,

validated by the winding line that endured until 3 a.m.

Congorock took the stage around midnight shortly after Black Boots fin-

ished their impressive set. Once Congorock had the spotlight, it was utter

chaos inside the venue. The opening song for the performance featured

a remixed version of Chuck Nash’s “Are You Ready (Make Some Noise)”

which gave Congorock a grand entrance. Fan favorites “Ivory” “Mono-

lith,” and “Babylon” gave the audience their music fix and then some.

Congorock also kept his word when he announced that he was going to

play plenty of new tracks. His new single “Bless Di Nation” further enticed

the crowd into a raging dance-trance. His nearly four-hour set kept the

dance floor packed with a twenty-somethings crowd surfing and shuffling

until nearly dawn.

The overall production of the show was remarkable, to say the least. The

cinematography of the video images playing on stage felt like a cross

between a contemporary art exhibit and a trippy David Lynch film. The

lighting effects were mesmerizing and the sound system, as always at

The Avalon, was amazing. Congorock is a must see DJ and, given the

venue, it’s no wonder the night was a perfect ten.

Club goers were dancing to bombastic beats while the drinks

kept flowing on a surprisingly warm night, Saturday Febru-

ary 16th, at the infamous Avalon in Hollywood. The enthusi-

asm of the crowd put good vibes at a high frequency as they waited

in excitement for Robbie Rivera to take the stage.

Between having his own record label, a syndicated radio show

broadcasted around the world, and headlining the annual Juicy

Beach Festival every year- it’s no wonder his rise to fame came at

a rapid pace. With Rivera back on tour, Niteguide had a chance to

catch up with him backstage right before his set to get the low down

on how he prepares for his shows, his favorite things about Califor-

nia, and this year’s Juicy Beach.

“Every year (at Juicy Beach) is always great. I always bring a lot of

new and upcoming talent as well as big names. I am looking forward

to seeing Cosmic Gate play this year. They always come to Juicy

Beach just to hang out and I was thinking to myself, I got to have

them play.”

When Rivera took the stage, audiences flocked to the dance floor to

get a glimpse of the notorious DJ. Kicking off his set was a new mix

of “Float Away” which got everyone in the club cheering at the top

of their lungs. He also played a remix of “Girlfriend” as well as his lat-

est single “A Thousand Miles”. Rivera, himself, revealed to Niteguide

backstage before the show that his sets are mostly improvised each

time he performs.

“I prepare only the first 6 songs of my sets and then afterwards I just

go with the flow.”

Rivera’s performance featured amazing video graphics on the screen

as well as the beautiful curvaceous go-go dancers and mind-blowing

lighting effects, which mixed well with the venue’s stunning décor

and top notch sound system. This perfectly unified combination is

one of the reasons Rivera keeps coming back to The Avalon.

“I have been coming to The Avalon for about 7 years now. I love

coming to LA and I love playing all over California. I love the weather

and driving up and down the coast. I will be coming back to LA in the

summer with a big party planned.”

A cold windy night in Los Angeles didn’t stop nightlife enthusi-

asts from flooding the streets of Hollywood to embark on yet

another crowded night at Avalon Nightclub’s Avaland Satur-

days. With Cosmic Gate scheduled to headline the night and perform

an aggressive 5 hour set, it’s no wonder the turn out for the event was

huge. Niteguide Magazine got a chance to sit down with Cosmic Gate

backstage right before their set to share their thoughts on being part

of the nightlife scene.

“We love the whole package of the nightlife scene, but we especially

love playing the music. We are both music lovers and we aren’t there

so much for the parties and drinks. We are there to lead the people

through the night with our music. Music comes first.”

Dedicated to their fans and passionate about the EDM music scene,

the German trance duo enjoys performing at various nightclubs glob-

ally, and they didn’t shy away from revealing some of their favorite

clubs to spin their tracks at from around the world.

“The Zouk Singapore club is one of our favorite clubs in the world. The

energy is amazing there from the beginning of the night ‘til the end.

Ministry of Sound in London is also fun and energetic, much like the

Avalon. There are just so many great clubs around the world.”

With a busy month ahead, Cosmic Gate will have limited down time to

check out the scenes of the various cities. Thankfully, since they are

able to travel the globe on a constant basis, it has given them a good

sense as to what they enjoy seeing at particular destinations. “We try

to go sightseeing in Australia but since we’ve been there, we spend

our time seeing what we like. In Miami we like to go out for music

week.” March won’t be the only busy month for the duo. Expect to

see their names on the roster of a few major festivals this year. “We

have already been confirmed to play a few big festivals; it’s going to

be an exciting year.”
