Today’s assistant is empowered to make decisions, lead teams, facilitate peer training, be a catalyst for change, and truly be a strategic business partner to management. What skills and attitudes does it take to operate at this higher level and meet the demands of the ever-changing workplace? How do you embrace these new responsibilities with confidence? How can you successfully work around barriers and road-blocks?

Confidence is a vital component of empowerment. How do you build your confidence? By taking on more challenging assignments; setting stretch goals; doing things that are uncomfortable like speaking in front of a group; tackling tough assignments; leaning into conflict or differences of opinion vs. hiding behind them through email; gaining knowledge; by being open to feedback and self-correcting; surrounding yourself with an inner circle who will support you and call you on the carpet when necessary; experiencing wins even if they are small ones.

Courage is the bridge from fear to freedom. You are going to have to be courageous and break through the barriers that are preventing you from being more successful in the workplace. Fear can prevent you from progressing in your career. It prevents you from being open to experiences which could be rewarding. It hampers you receptivity as an individual. It has a way of becoming a “monster” if you let it fester because the more you think about the thing you fear doing, the worse it seems. When fear stands in the way of you becoming all you can be, learn to make it work for you, not against you.

Competence is the third ingredient to the formula for empowerment. A person can have courage and confidence and not be competent. Competence is proficiency or ability in a specific skill area. What are the skill sets assistants need to develop to project empowerment and to feel empowered?

At Office Dynamics, we know that assistants are always coming up with great ideas, creating new systems or templates, or taking the lead. Oftentimes assistants do not have the opportunity to showcase their talents or what they have created, nor do they always get recognized for their work.

Office Dynamics is excited to announce this first-time session whereby 5 – 7 conference participants will be able to “show” what they have done that would represent being innovative. As trailblazers in the administrative training industry, Office Dynamics wants to celebrate outstanding ideas birthed by administrative and executive assistants.

Joan Burge and her team will determine who will present on the main stage. • Ideally, presenters should demonstrate their idea or use visual props to showcase their idea or best practice. • We recommend not using PowerPoint slides unless absolutely necessary. • A creative approach is much more interesting, engaging, and empowering. • Presenters will have 5 minutes to present. • Joan Burge and Office Dynamics team will determine the winner of the Innovation Award during this session.

Staring Down Your GoliathWe all have a Goliath. Your Goliath could be the fear of going back to school; excelling in your career; having an uncomfortable but necessary conversation with your leader. Your Goliath could be juggling work and home life; taking on a massive, new project at work. Maybe your Goliath is introducing yourself to conference participants and getting to know them. What is your Goliath? Or who is your Goliath? In this session, you will learn strategies to use when feeling powerless and how to prepare your parachute before jumping in.

LISA OLSEN4 Habits of the Empowered Assistant Empowerment is a process; a path and a journey. It is a multi-dimensional process that

fosters influential impact when we understand it. Being empowered presupposes some level of common sense and emotional maturity. Have you ever considered how you feel about your

own personal power? What is empowerment and what habits can be developed that build confidence in own empowerment? This session will focus on four habits that often are uncomfortable and challenging for assistants: Negotiation, Risk, Conflict and Competition.

PEGGY VASQUEZDevelop a Healthy Dose of ConfidenceDo you feel insecure when an amazing assistant or manager walks into the room? When you

lack confidence, you communicate doubt and insecurity. Another word for confidence is self-esteem, it’s one of the most basic human needs. At the deepest level it’s about your belief

system. When you know your value, you know your worth and that alone will speak volumes to yourself and others. The question is, how do you develop a healthy dose of confidence and not become arrogant. During this session, Peggy will share the Rudy Principal, the Pygmalion effect and take a deep dive into Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale.
