HORMONES• They move into the blood stream to be carried

throughout the body.• Each chemical is deigned to affect and react with certain

body tissues or organs and simulate change.• Adrenaline is the most familiar one, when released from

the adrenal glands, causes the body to prepare for a “flight or fight” condition. Heart beats faster, lungs work harder, muscles start to tense longer and quicker and blood pressure rises.

• The Nervous system senses the danger which triggers the adrenal glands to respond. The two work together to prepare the body for emergency situations.

• Some hormones trigger changes in the physical appearance of the body.

Names of the 8 glands of the ES:

• Hypothalamus,• pituitary,• Thyroid• Thymus• Adrenal• Pancreas• Parathyroid's• Gonads (testes & Ovaries)

NEGATIVE FEEDBACK MECHANISM

• It’s how the ES regulates itself.

• If a certain hormone level is too low or too high, then the glands release chemicals that stimulate or shut-off production of the hormone.

• The hypothalamus – regulates activities of the other Endocrine glands.

The Exocrine Glands

• Another set of glands –DO NOT PRODUCE HORMONES!

• Tears, sweat or digestive juices, these glands are located near the organs that they affect.

Hormones are responsible for 3 kinds of control:

• 1. Speed up body processes.

• 2.Slow down or stop certain processes.

• 3. Change body structures by stimulating growth.

Homeostasis

• The Endocrine system and the nervous system work closely together to maintain a proper internal environment for humans.
