Music Notes from Ann Coulter
The pipe organ is sometimes known as “the King of instruments.” Organists like that designation!
Because of the careful planning and generosity of St. Paul’s members in the past (starting with the design and
construction of our church building in 1895 and continuing through the years to the careful renovation of the
nave in 2000-2001), we have a nave and chancel that are not only beautiful and inspiring but that also
possess excellent acoustics. The reverberant space makes the music of the organ pipes ring and blend. The
singing of the choir and congregation is “alive” because of the acoustical qualities. In the mid-1960’s,
through the leadership of Helen and Sam Williams and Roger Cole, Organist/Choirmaster, funds were raised
and plans were made for the purchase of our large balcony pipe organ built by the Schantz Organ Company.
Our recital donor has always enjoyed organ music and is very proud of the beautiful instrument we are
fortunate to have. The donor wants the church and larger community to have the opportunity to hear recitals
played on our excellent instrument in our beautiful nave. We are very grateful.
This year, the St. Paul’s Organ Recital will be on Sunday, May 22nd, at 5:00 p.m. Our guest ar tist is Dr. John T.
Lowe, Jr., who cur rently serves as the Director of Music and Organist at Holy Tr inity Episcopal Church in Gainesville,
Florida. A native of Lynchburg, Dr. Lowe received the Bachelor of Science degree in Organ Performance from Liberty University
where he was a student of George Clark, Organist at Court Street United Methodist Church. After receiving his Master’s degree in
Organ Performance and Choral Conducting from the University of Alabama, he earned the Doctor of Music degree in Organ
Performance and Church Music from Indiana University. Dr. Lowe has been a prizewinner in local, regional, and national organ
playing competitions. He has performed recitals throughout the United States, and his accompanying engagements have taken him
to the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, New Zealand, and Australia.
I have known John since he was a beginning organist during his high school years. He is one of the finest organists I have
had the privilege to hear, and you will be inspired by his dazzling and sensitive playing. Please come and invite a friend to this
wonderful recital. The recital is free and open to the public, and a nursery is provided.

A Message from Diane and Todd
You may have heard someone remember with great fondness ‘The good old
days.’ Some seem to remember those ‘good old days’ as days when times were simpler,
less frenzied, where people got along and all just seemed to be right with the world.
Some seem to remember the ‘good old days’ of the Church as well, when “there
was no division, the church was full on Sunday mornings and people got along.” People
tend to especially remember the ‘good old days’ during times of transition and change.
We make this point as we enter into a new time at St. Paul's. Our beloved Organist and
Choir Master, Ann Coulter, is retiring after many years of superlative music ministry at
St. Paul's. And, we just sent on her way with our blessings, our dedicated and cherished Parish Administrator, Cindy Minton. Both
have discerned the time to move on to a new chapter in their lives: Cindy to go back to her position as Executive Assistant for a
CEO, and Ann to enter retirement. We will most certainly miss Ann and Cindy, as we have missed other staff and members of St.
Paul's who have also moved on in their lives.
We are in transition. We are also in an outstanding position as St. Paul's is growing in ministries, in membership, in
financial strength and in vitality and faith. St. Paul's will begin new days with a new Parish Administrator, Debbie Inge, who began
at St. Paul’s on May 9th. Debbie has many years of experience as an Executive Assistant and as a Parish Administrator. Please come
by the parish office and welcome Debbie. St. Paul’s will begin new days with a new organist/choir master as well. The search
committee has done excellent discernment work and, after reviewing many great candidates, we will bring two finalists to St. Paul's
for final interviews and discernment. Letters to the congregation with details of Ann’s retirement have been sent out and we
certainly hope you will join us as we celebrate the gift of Ann’s ministry after the 10:00 AM service on June 12 th 2016.
As we continue in this and all journeys of faith and ministry, we will continue to live into our mission statement: To Know
Christ, To Worship Christ, To Serve Christ, and To Make Him Known. This is our mission, this is our responsibility, and this is our
privilege. In his song, ‘Keeping the Faith’, Billy Joel sings, “Y ou know the good ole days weren’t always good, and tomorrow ain’t
as bad as it seems.” Good perspective. Who we will be, what we will do, how we will journey together is all in God’s hands. At least
the days before us have taught us that as long as we trust God, no matter what happens in the future, God will be with us and we will
be used for God’s greater purposes on earth. Much better perspective! Keep the faith brothers and sisters, and by God’s grace, we
will remember these days with great fondness, as we enter into new days with joy and gratitude for God’s never ending grace.
Peace and Blessings,
Diane+ and Todd+

SERVING OUR NEIGHBORS...
Thanks to all who helped with the Interfaith Outreach
Easter dinner and supplies. The family was very
appreciative. Your generosity was a true blessing to this
grandmother and her grandchildren! Many thanks for all

A MESSAGE TO THE PARISH … It is with a heavy heart that I
publish my final edition of The Epistle before leaving St. Paul’s. I want
to thank the Clergy, Staff, the various Vestries, and you, the congregation
for supporting me as your Parish Administrator for the past 7 years. I
know that my successor, Debbie Inge, is going to do a great job and I
feel very blessed that Gayle and Debbie will be in charge of the office.
You are in good hands! I want to thank Diane and Todd for the
privilege of working with an amazing clergy couple! Congratulations to
“Dr. Vie” who will officially receive her degree in a couple of weeks. A
special heartfelt thanks to Todd for believing in me and handing me the
reigns to run the office, but especially for being my rock both
professionally and personally for the past 7 years. I am ever indebted to
you for your love and support through it all. Ann Coulter, thanks for
your patience with the many bulletins we put together and your
friendship. Cathy Greene and Lin Vitale, I will never forget your many
acts of kindness when I really needed it —and there were so many! Tim
Shepherd and Linda Woody, the church buildings and grounds are
spotless because of your dedication and I have loved working with you
both. Cinda Hurt, I will miss our weekly bulletin productions...thank
you. Finally, to you the congregation, I will always be grateful for your
support and encouragement along this journey. There are way too
many of you to mention but you know who you are! I wish you
continued success as you work together to serve Christ in this beautiful
place. Warren and I look forward to worshipping with you soon.
— Cindy Minton

ST. PAUL’S PROVIDED OVER 26,000 MEALS & RAISED OVER $7500 FOR STOP HUNGER NOW!!!
I wanted to take this time to thank you as well as Grace Episcopal and
St. John's for an awesome packaging event
during the Bishop’s visitation on April 17,
2016. It was only a couple of months before
that day when we started making a big push to
fund raise for the $5,825.52 we needed to pay
for the 20,088 meals we had initially planned on
packing. We blew that figure out of the water a
week before the pack with over $7,579.44 which
was necessary to package the total 26,136 meals
we did pack together. I believe in the mission and goal of Stop Hunger
Now to end world hunger in our lifetime. Stop Hunger Now was
started and continues to be a great organization that provides a tool for
congregations and communities to gather together and to help those
who "are hungry and you gave me food, thirsty and you gave me
something to drink" for as Christ has said "Truly I tell you, just as you
did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you
did it to me." None of this is accomplished without the tremendous
generosity of both finances and time that was given by so many to
accomplish the pack of over 26,136 meals that will be headed to Haiti
shortly, where the Bishop had seen the food relief personally. Thanks
for everyone's dedication, and I look forward to the next pack we host.
