I know, sometimes commence- ment addresses can be too long. And if there is a big class it takes awhile until all the graduates walk across the stage to receive a diploma. Yet they are joyous occasions. I regularly attended the graduation of Meharry Medical College when I was the chaplain/vicar at St. Anselm’s. In a way it spoiled me. I was pastor to some of the graduates. It was fun to watch the graduate’s families excited and arriving in hoards. The speakers were outstanding. One year the speaker was Bill Cosby. He also helped hand out the diplomas. He was having more fun than anyone else. Since the graduation was outside there was a lot of hugs and handshakes. This year we have members of St. Ann's who graduated. One earned his Doctorate, another her Master’s degree and three graduated from high school. We are proud of their accomplishments. The high school graduates grew up among us and now they are at this special time in life. I was able to attend the ceremony for the students that completed 8 th grade at Kipp Academy in East Nashville. The founder and president- Randy Dowell- is a member of our parish. The ceremony was in the historic Fisk Chapel that has no air conditioning. It was short but inspirational. All of the students had been accepted to either magnate or private high schools. They worked hard, attending school in the summer and on Saturdays. Many had little reason to succeed and plenty of excuses to fail. But they did succeed. The ceremony was not called a graduation. Randy and others told them repeatedly they were just getting started. High school graduation was next on their educational journey to college. They were referred to as the Class of 2014. I am a fan of hope. You have to admit when you see our youth fulfilling their potential or living up to expectations born from natural talents and abilities, it gives a special lift to the soul. A Big Thank You From Harry Gibson

After the flood, a group of St. Ann’s parishioners gathered at Harry’s house to help with the clean up. All of the damaged duct work and insulation was pulled out One group took everything out of the garage, cleaned it, bleached it and then put everything back. Another group tackled the house and cleaned it from top to bottom. The HVAC unit has now been replaced and Harry is enjoying the cool air. He is very grateful for all of the help he received and thanks the great bunch from St. Ann’s.

CHILDREN & YOUTH

Batter Up!

It's time for the annual St. Ann's/Eastwood Christian

Church

Join us for games, learning about the Bible, good food and lots of fun at Eastwood Christian Church, 1601 Eastwood Ave. If you haven’t registered your child yet, you can still take him/her to Eastwood on Sunday and register. The schedule is: Sunday June 6 3:45-6 p.m. Monday June 7 5:45 to 8 p.m. Tuesday June 8 5:45 to 8 p.m. Wednesday June 9 5:45 to 8 p.m.

EYC and EKC Happenings

The EYC and EKC have ended our official time together until the Fall. We had a lovely end of the year party hosted by Roberta Thomas and Jane Thompson at their home. The kids, parents, and adult friends of the groups enjoyed a cookout and pool time. A fun time was had by all! Silent Sunday was...well, rather silent and quite a success. Eight of our youth from the EYC managed to be silent for 4 hours! Pledges were made to our youth in the amount of $1133. If you did not get a chance to pledge and still wish to donate to the youth, it's not too late! Please contact Kristin Wells or one of our youth. If you made a pledge and need to pay, you may grab one of our youths directly, drop a check in the collection plate or send it to the church office with "Silent Sunday" written in the memo field so that the youth fund will be properly credited. Thank you to all who donated! Our mission trip and further success of the EYC couldn't happen without you! The EYC is also preparing for their summer mission trip to Panama City Beach, FL, the week of July 4. We will be working with a local organization, Noah's Ark. Fr. Rick and Bill Ralston will be joining the youth on their trip, along with Kristin Wells
