“A CALLOW youth” who, at the tender age of 12 years, had allowed himself to be “persuaded by Launcelot John Goody to come and help him found St Charles’ Provincial Seminary,” is how Archbishop Timothy described Fr Pat Cunningham’s jour-ney towards priesthood in the homily at this beloved priest’s Requiem Mass.

“How grateful we should be,” said Archbishop Costelloe, “for Archbishop Goody’s powers of persua-sion!”

Archbishop Costelloe opened his homily with impromptu words speaking of the importance of this particular week in the life of the priestly ministry in the Archdiocese of Perth.

“It all began” he stated, “with Fr Pat’s death on the Friday morning, which was later followed by the ordina-tion of six fine young men to the diaconate that same evening.

“Then,” he said, “The cler-gy engaged in a memorable evening at Aquinas where we were able to celebrate the gift of priesthood.”

The thrust of the Archbishop’s words revolved around the “simple words from the Preface of the Dead,” reminding the vast throng of priests and con-gregation present in St Mary’s Cathedral that “for

your faithful, Lord, life is changed not ended, and when this earthly dwelling turns to dust, an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in heaven”.

Those present were reminded that “as a priest, as a man of faith, Fr Pat

In recent years, he had been welcomed to make his residence at Clontarf along-side the Christian Brothers,

with whom he had a “life-long connection” and among whom he found both “great support and great friend-ship”.

Archbishop Costelloe praised Fr Pat’s service as editor of The Record, his role as “chaplain at what is now St John of God Hospital in Mt Lawley,” and his involvement with the Sisters of Mercy at Wembley.

THE NEW Archbishop, Anthony Fisher, was met by an honour guard last night as he entered St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, took prayer before the Blessed Sacrament then took his seat in a three-part ceremo-ny confirming his appoint-ment, reports The SMH.

St Mary’s Cathedral bells rang and the majestic voices of the scholars and choir of the Cathedral sang in celebration as it over-flowed with leaders and believers of all congrega-tions, religious and civic, coming together to rejoice and show their support for Cardinal George Pell’s suc-cessor. The Archbishop of Sydney is one of the most powerful jobs in Australian Catholicism, with the past four archbishops promoted to Cardinal after receiv-ing the post. Archbishop Fisher, 54, has admitted to being “excited, daunted and intimidated” by the role but has significant support from his peers

and superiors, having been chosen personally by Pope Francis and being Cardinal Pell’s choice. Former Prime Minister John Howard, Lord Mayor of Sydney Clover Moore and NSW Premier Mike Baird were all in attendance while

representatives were sent for Prime Minister Tony Abbott and opposition leader Bill Shorten.

The Mass was open to the public, who packed the vast building and spilt into the crypt beneath to watch on television. The title Our

Lady Help of Christians, Archbishop Fisher said, marked “the intersection and sometimes collision of three great ideas that shape the human soul in our age: Christianity, Islam and secularism.”

THE HOLY Father has sent a message to Tony Abbott, Prime Minister of Australia, who will chair the Summit of Heads of State and Government of the 20 Countries (G-20) scheduled to take place this week on the 15 and 16 November in Brisbane.

The meeting will focus on efforts to relaunch sustained and sustainable growth of the world econ-omy and the fundamental imperative, which emerged from the preparatory work, of creating dignified and stable employment for all.

Extensive extracts from the text are published below:

“I would ask the G20 Heads of State and Government not to forget that many lives are at stake behind these political and technical discussions, and it would indeed be regret-table if such discussions were to remain purely on the level of declarations of principle. Throughout the world, the G20 countries included, there are far too many women and men suf-fering from severe malnu-trition, a rise in the num-ber of the unemployed, an

extremely high percentage of young people without work and an increase in social exclusion which can lead to criminal activity and even the recruitment of terrorists. In addition, there are constant assaults on the natural environ-ment, the result of unbri-dled consumerism, and this will have serious con-sequences for the world economy.

“It is my hope that a substantial and productive consensus can be achieved regarding the agenda items. I likewise hope that the

assessment of the results of this consensus will not be restricted to global indices.

A NEW St Vincent de Paul Society store in Applecross opened its doors for trading on 20 October 2014.

The store offers great op-shopping opportunities for the community as well as giving enthusiastic vol-unteers an opportunity to work for a Catholic charity that assists people in need.

St Vincent de Paul shops benefit greatly from vol-unteer work and often welcome passionate help-ers who are willing to sup-port the dedicated staff of the society. Linda Rigney, St Vincent de Paul’s Area Manager, stated that the organisation is “looking for volunteers to work at the front counter, ringing up sales through the register and generally helping out with customer service in the shop.”

“Our volunteers have a great time and enjoy the community spirit and opportunity to give back

to the community by giv-ing some of their time,” she said. “We are also keen to receive donations from the public and readily accept second-hand clothing and

household items that are still in good, usable condi-tion,” Linda said.

Up to 30 per cent of the store has recently been stocked with great

European labels, giving shoppers the chance to both purchase quality items at very reasonable prices and simultaneously support St Vincent de Paul’s. The St Vincent de Paul Society is a lay Catholic organisation offering people a complete range of services that pro-vide specific assistance, and focuses on ensuring that the social, economic, and polit-ical pressures placed on the disadvantage are reduced.

The Society aspires to live the Gospel message by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice, hope and joy, and by work-ing to shape a more just and compassionate society.

An official blessing of the shop will take place on 19 November 2014 with proceedings commencing at 9am. Father Fry of St Benedict’s Applecross will be in attendance to provide the blessing of the shop and all of those who work there.

THE BICENTENARY Mass celebrating the birth of Perth’s second Bishop, Martin Griver, was held on Tuesday, 11 November 2014 at St Mary’s Cathedral in Perth. Mgr Brian O’Loughlin, C h a i r m an of t h e Archdiocesan Historical Commission, celebrated the Mass alongside concele-brants Fr Robert Cross from the diocese of Geraldton and Fr David Barry OSB, from New Norcia.

In his homily for the occasion, Mgr O’Loughlin

referred to Bishop Griver’s great achievements within the Perth Archdiocese, not least the completion of St Mary’s Cathedral in 1865, most of which can still be admired from the Murray

Street side of the building. Mgr O’Loughlin also

reminded the assembly that the feast of St Martin of Tours coincided with Bishop Griver’s birthday.

Mgr O’Loughlin laid

emphasis on the similarities between St Martin’s devo-tion to the poor, recount-ing a story of St Martin cutting his cloak in half to share with a beggar, and the bond which Bishop Griver

formed with the poor of Western Australia with whom he worked.

Bishop Griver’s history and achievements were further highlighted by postgraduate student and

author of a Master’s thesis on Martin Griver, Odhran O’Brien, who addressed the congregation at the conclu-sion of the Mass.

According to Mr O’Brien, soon after his ordination in 1847, Bishop Griver was sent to Western Australia by Bishop Jose Maria Serra.

He arrived in Fremantle in 1849 and spent his early years undertaking chap-laincy work in prisons and hospitals in the districts of Perth and Fremantle.

PARISH PRIESTS and their representatives, agency directors and gen-erous contributors attend-ed a Liturgical Service of Thanksgiving at St Mary’s Cathedral last week on Tuesday, 4 November, where they were thanked by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe for their support of the work of LifeLink across the Archdiocese of Perth.

LifeLink agencies col-lectively touch the lives of more than 31,000 people in need each year through the provision of accom-modation, food, cloth-ing, financial assistance with electricity and gas

accounts, and the protec-tion of women and children escaping domestic violence and abuse. In this year’s Christmas Appeal, the Archbishop is setting a tar-get of $650,000 so as to help fund agencies in being able to meet the needs of those who knock on the doors of archdiocesan agencies.

“We are not independ-ent self-sufficient individ-uals,” stated Archbishop Costelloe. “On the contra-ry, we are children of God,” he said.

“It is God who gives us our life in the first place, together with whatever skills and talents we might have which enable us to live our lives fully and achieve sometimes great things.”

“Maintain a fixed gaze on Jesus Christ. Pause in contemplation and in adoration of His face. Let Christ be your light.”

This is the mandate given to six newly ordained men by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe at their diaco-nate ordination in St Mary’s Cathedral last Friday, 7 November.

In the presence of 66 priests, Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton and Archbishop Costelloe, along with a cathedral wall-to-wall with members of the congregation, the deacons made a number of promises.

Among them, they resolved to “proclaim the

mystery of faith in word and deed according to the Gospel and the Church’s tradition”, “to embrace the celibate state… as a sign of [their] dedication to Christ the Lord for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven,

in the service of God and man”, and “to conform [their] way of life always to the example of Christ, of whose Body and blood [they] are ministers at the altar”.

The men, formed and

educated at St Charles’ Seminary in Guildford and the University of Notre Dame, Australia, come from Australia, the Philippines and Myanmar (Burma).

After turning to the saints in Heaven, inviting them to intercede with all those present, the laying on of hands and the prayer of ordination was undertaken by Archbishop Costelloe after which family mem-bers and friends vested the six newly ordained deacons with stole and dalmatic vestments, proper to the Order of the Diaconate.

A great celebration fol-lowed the Ordination which was attended by several hundred religious, clergy and worshippers.
