The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) Early warning and monitoring of wildfires in Europe and globally

Expansion of EFFIS to the global scale –

the Global Wildfire Information System (GWIS)

In order to monitor fire regimes and assess the impact of wildfires at the global scale,

the JRC is working closely with European and international space agencies and

research institutions to develop a Global Wildfire Information System. A prototype of

this system, which follows the information scheme presented above fore EFFIS, is

already available

Wildfires are a recurrent hazard in Europe and at the global level. They cause a large economic and environmental damages and often result in the loss

of human lives. It is thus essential to provide early warning and to increase preparedness to prevent wildfires and, when this is not possible, to minimize

the damages caused by them. Losses by wildfires in Europe are conservatively estimated in about 2.700.000 Million Euro every year.

In support of EU forestry and civil protection policies, the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission,, has developed a system to enhance

wildfire prevention, to provide early warning and increase fire fighting preparedness and efficiency, and to monitor the impact of damages caused by

wildfires. This system, which is component of the Copernicus Emergency Management Services, is referred to as the European Forest Fire

Information System – EFFIS (http://effis.jrc.ec.europa.eu).
