The evaluation of the questionnaire to determine how young people perceives unemployed in our regions.

May 2012

This project has been funded with support from the European Commission. This document reflects the views only of the author, and the Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein

1.The  sampleThe project activities of “Integrate4job” have 3 major fields of tasks:

Research and investigation on the reasons for unemployment Define measures for training in acquiring employability skills of jobless peopleOnline course for using electronic resources, messaging, CV writing and job applications submitting

The survey aims to investigate jobless people fitness for future employment, policies for training, measures to facilitate the access to the labour market. The questionnaire has led to a population of 201 individuals. Has been developed in 3 countries, Spain, Turkey and Germany. From a quantitative point of view, the Partners have contributed with the same number of individuals.

From a qualitative point of view, we do try to discover something. We may be seeking to uncover: the reasons why people may or may not have a job; the job attributes that may be important to people; possible people perceptions of situation current; the various problems that people may experience with their future or other kinds of insights. (For lack of a better term, I will use the word “perception” to refer to a reason, need, attribute, problem, or whatever the qualitative project is intended to uncover.) It would be up to a subsequent quantitative study to estimate, with statistical precision, how important or prevalent each perception actually is.

The key point is this: Our qualitative sample must be big enough to assure that we are likely to hear most or all of the perceptions that might be important. Within a target group, different people may have diverse perceptions. Therefore, the smaller the sample size, the narrower the range of perceptions we may hear. On the positive side, the larger the sample size, the less likely it is that we would fail to discover a perception that we would have wanted to know. In other words, our objective in designing qualitative research is to reduce the chances of discovery failure, as opposed to reducing (quantitative) estimation error.

2.  Preliminary  conclusionsThe aims to develop an in-depth work on the current situation in three countries: Germany, Spain and Turkey. This is a rigorous process that requires the review and contrast to improve processes. From this perspective, the conclusions:

Social-labour climate study Creation of courses that promote accessibility to labour market

We will gain awareness of young peoples ́ sight on unemployment and job opportunities and then we will get together unemployed people and employers by organising some activities as a career day and the web page.We will give professional support to the target groups in getting rid of their psychological problems with giving them seminars by expert persons.

3. MAIN RESULTS "Data Aggregates"

The results from the research carried out in the 3 partner countries: Spain, Turkey and Germany, among 210 people show:

Relationship between education and employabilityPsychological reasons for unemployment Insufficient information for the low educated for finding a jobLack of skills for looking for a job, CV writing and job applications submission

3.1. General

The questionnaire was completed by young adult people, the most vulnerable group in danger of social exclusion due to the lack of knowledge and adaptability to the labour market requirements:

Age: 16-17: 19,6%; 18-19: 80,4%

Gender: Male: 70,7%; Female: 23,5%

We addressed men as the information from the Spanish employment agencies states that it’s much difficult for men to change jobs and master new vocations.

The results for the motivation to study and follow a certain career are quite optimistic. Only 2,2% are school drop-outs. The regular students were 6,5%.Most have decided to get a final school degree: 100,0%, less have been after getting a Certificate of chamber of commerce: and very few are ready to continue their education in universities and get a degree. That needs to be taken into consideration when revising the educational policies in EU countries, aiming at transforming EU into the most educative population in the world. In reality it seems as there exists a

Here is a food for thought. Although the percentage of those whose ambitions end up in 10th class and who haven’t taken any decisions about their future life might seem small, a greater attention should be paid to integrate them in the educational system, to demonstrate the benefit of further training in order to answer the requirements of the labour market and businesses. As our project aims to integrate disadvantaged people, we have prepared the online course for jobless people irrespective to background, nationality and economic conditions. The level of the Spanish language is not sophisticated, so that anybody with basic education can benefit.

3.2. Your vocational future

Spanish young people usually make plans for their vocational education quite early in life – 90,2% have already planned their vacational future. But although only 9.8% say that their decisions for the future are not connected with studying, this is a big figure – these are people whose parents have also neglected education, who do not value learning and consider personal improvement less important.

What are the aspirations of the young Spaniards? 90,2% have already taken plans for their future vocational training: in the hospitality industry – waiters, some pursuing higher degree in management, bachelors and public administration. Only 9,8% have not decided what to do after graduating from the secondary school and the education of some ends up in 10th class of the high school.

It’s no wonder why 65,2 % have answered that they’ve chosen the job because they think it is fun. This is a cultural feature, the positive attitude towards the future job makes youths more motivated, striving to achieve success. Some go even further pointing that the chosen job is just right for them 5,4% and 9,85% believe that they can meet the skills needed for the selected job. The possibilities for a carrier are important for 3,3% of the surveyed group. Nearly nobody showed signs of satisfaction from the future salaries they’ll get for their work – 2,2 Spanish youths answered that the money they’ll be paid for their job will be OK, the rest – 97,8% think that they won’t get salaries, relevant to their work.

Further on, the survey relates to the Lifelong learning and continuing education and refers to formal and informal education. In order to achieve their goals 50% will be aiming at higher degrees, 20,7% find it suitable to get qualifications by involving in an apprenticeship programme in a company, 5,4% will be looking for further vocational training. But again we have a disadvantaged group, looking for a job without clearly defined education and without any plans for future up-grading qualifications and its number is quite frightening ´- 22%. This is the greater part of our target group whom our online courses were prepared for.

Next comes the answer that justifies the needs for this project and the fields of intervention for planning our future projects. The selected 3 most important things that should be done for getting a job clearly demonstrate that the online course on CV composition was the right choice – 47,8% believe this is crutial for finding a job. The importance of propper degree is selected by 77,2%, a good sign for the development of higher schools and universities. And although career development is important, 44,6% will accept any job at first for gaining experience and becoming independent. But there is something that is not well understood as a way to answer the labour market requirements – the knowledge of interview technics – only 10,9% admit that the first impression at the interview can play a role in getting the desired job. The following are not preferential: buying good clothes – 8,7%; knowing the employer – 18,5%; giving a good aspect – 17,4%; having a car – 5,4%; having a GSM – 2,2%; having a driving license – 7,6%. And something that should be noted and taken into consideration for the future life-long training of our target group - 59,8% consider learning a foreign language is the most important for them.

The answer to the next questions defines the duration of the unemployment period:

46,3% have been jobless for mare than a year; 22,5% from 6 to 12 months and 31,3% have been unemployed for a month up to 6 months.

The permanently unemployed people, for more than a year in Spain are 46,3% and they have already perhaps lost motivation for training.

Still, this is a considerable part of the population and in comparison with Turkey, demonstrates the economic problems of the European Union.

Altogether the figures for measuring the influence of the economic crises on the psychological status of the population of Spain might seem optimistic, 35,9% see that their future will be good. The people are not so desparate – only 16,3% are having the opinion that their future will be bad.

So, living in an environment where nearly all are affected by the great unemployment rate can lead to negative psychological consequences and 57,6% fear to be unemployed. The low income has made people insecure and although 35,9% are optimists about their future, the future prospects are unspecified for nearly have of the investigated group: 25% don’t know and 22,8% can’t predict a bright prospects for their future life.

Having defined the group of unemployed, its attitudes towards training and its capacities and needs for adaptation to the requirements of the labour market, we wanted to investigate the influence the economic crisis exert on young people. The figures are striking - 87% know someone who is unemployed and 60% answered that this person is a member of their family, for 28,8% the jobless are their friends, 5,5% - their colleagues.

Can an affected person find a way out of the claws of unemployment. The survey demonstrates that only 17,4% become very ambitious in their job/career and only 18,5% are motivated to be good in school or in their job.
