Professor Chris Husbands Professor Paul Harrison Vice-Chancellor PVC Research and Innovation
Who should attend? The half-day session is aimed at established researchers, early career researchers, doctoral researchers, and those academics engaging with research for the first time or returning after an absence.
The event’s programme is outlined overleaf
Researchers can always learn from each other and especially from experienced successful researchers. This conference provides the opportunity to gain insights from the research career of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chris Husbands and from Professor Paul Harrison our PVC Research and Innovation. Professor Harrison will provide an update on research and innovation at the University. This event will highlight some of the CPD opportunities available at Sheffield Hallam to support and develop your career as a researcher.

Intentions and unintentions building research careers Professor Chris Husbands Vice Chancellor March 2016
'A man who gives a good account of himself is probably lying, since any life when viewed from the inside is simply a series of defeats.’ George Orwell, All Art is Propaganda
a research career is a mixture of planning, lucky breaks, disappointment and unintended consequences. time is always the most precious resource team work, collaboration and large scale thinking matter almost any research career is driven by a curiosity about some things which enthuse and engage
four ideas
first degree in history doctorate in geography an early career teaching in urban comprehensive schools a second career researching and teaching in schools of education a third career in university leadership
bare outline
fifteen books 400 papers, presentations and reports 25 research projects Overall research income of ca £5m....but one project of £3m one project of £600,000 most projects small in scale
the outside story
….is not the whole story
…why do some things work and others don’t work: in similar and different settings…and what can we do about it?
…what is the question which really drives and puzzles and enthuses you?
…be willing to unpack your interests in ways which fit funder priorities
…time is the most precious resource….
…teams matter…
…methods matter…
…systematic inquiry made public…
…research for public good…
Paul Harrison, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research & Innovation

RDF Planner
• An online system for managing development – skills audits,
development plans, accessing development and then recording
CPD (ePortfolio) - SHU has institutional subscription
• Compulsory for all doctoral researchers and available to staff on
request
• Guidance Document (for doctoral researchers and supervisors):

Research CPD Pathways
Annual appraisal should be equally weighted between performance
review and development planning - career focus as much as on current
role/project
Appraisal participation rate - SHU 88.1%, UK HE - 59.5%
Found it useful - SHU 56.6%, UK HE - 44.1%
Mentoring informally - approach someone senior, outside of line
management chain, who you respect and admire. Or your line
manager can help find one - a peer of theirs from a cognate
section/department
Mentoring formally - schemes may be organised locally (e.g. PSP,
DLC, ADRC) or sometimes centrally by HR (usually an E&D
intervention e.g. )
