The Birth of Helicopter Rescue

• Pioneered during the Korean 

War to support MASH units. 

“MEDEVAC” and “DUSTOFF” 

became common during the 

Vietnam conflict.

– PAO determinations are made on a flight‐by‐flight basis, almost always after the fact
